BSc (Hons) Clinical and Community Psychology

BSc (Hons) Child Psychology

Clinical and Community Psychology is all about learning from, and initiating positive change with vulnerable and marginalised people and groups. The focus is not just on the individuals themselves but on how factors in society have an impact on lives.

Your degree in Child Psychology will develop your knowledge and understanding of children from a psychological, cultural, educational and counselling perspective.

If you want to be out there in the real world, learning and researching and making a difference, this is the course for you.

You will practise what you are learning through partnerships or voluntary schemes within local community groups or the NHS.

You will widen your experience and learn new skills, such as evidence-based evaluations, report writing and making recommendations for practice.

In at least one of your modules you have the opportunity to undertake a professional piece of evidence-based research for a community partner – a service that the organisation would perhaps not otherwise have been able to afford.

8

You will be focusing on why babies, children and adolescents behave the way they do. You will also design and carry out studies to explore the factors that go on to influence adult behaviour.

The aim is to learn how psychologists can use their knowledge to understand individuals and help them to make a positive difference to their life’s development.

You will be developing a wider range of skills than most other Child Psychology students, as your degree will involve studying three complementary academic subjects: developmental psychology, counselling and early childhood studies.

You will back up your theoretical knowledge with work placements and outside projects.

You’ll be studying at one of the largest and most successful psychology schools in the country, with sky-high student satisfaction scores, world-leading research and huge demand for places on our courses.

BSc (Hons) Forensic Psychology

BSc (Hons) Psychology with Sociology

Our exciting and highly stimulating Forensic Psychology course will equip you for a future career in the courts or the wider criminal justice system. Your arena will be crime in all its forms as you bring your wide knowledge of psychological theory to bear upon the behaviour of offenders.

Psychology is the study of the mind and human behaviour. Sociology is the study of social worlds.

You will specialise in analysing the relationship between psychological and social factors and criminal or deviant behaviour.

You will also investigate how the criminal courts approach their dealings with suspects and defendants, victims and witnesses.

A degree in forensic psychology will help you build a career in organisations such as the police, the probation and prison services, youth offending teams, and drug referral and treatment agencies.

It will also put you in a good position to apply for the specialised postgraduate training needed to become a practising forensic psychologist.

9

In combining the two on this course, you will be addressing the underlying factors that influence people’s behaviour. For example, in questioning why someone is ill, you will look beyond the person to their broader circumstances, taking in factors such as housing, poverty, politics and history.

You will gain an understanding of the complex relationship between an individual and their society, with all its social and political institutions.

We’ll give you a thorough grounding in the core areas of psychology while encouraging you to ‘think sociologically’ about everything you encounter, bringing a critical focus to your studies and evaluating what you learn in terms of social theory.

“Although the straight psychology course here at UEL touches on the theories of social psychology, I wanted a deeper and broader understanding of the influences on the behaviour of humankind. The sociology module on the mixed course offers just that, even going beyond what I had expected. We delve into the influences of religion and the very history of sociology as a science, following its journey through modernity, to the present day – into arguably the most rapidly developing and most socially diverse period in history. UEL is a great place to study and this is definitely the best course.”

Careers and employability Employers value psychology students because they believe they have a better understanding of human behaviour. Your understanding of how people work within organisations will be a real selling point when you’re applying for a managerial job. Many of our graduates now work in social welfare, sport and leisure, education, human resource management, consumer research and advertising, media, market research and community work. The training we’ll give you in data collection and analysis, report writing and IT skills will also be useful in a range of work not directly related to psychology. If you choose to continue your studies, your degree in psychology will be the first step towards becoming a professional psychologist, whether it is in the field of clinical, educational, occupational, counselling, health or forensic psychology. The gateway to these jobs will be further study at master’s or doctorate level.

“The support from the staff at UEL has been so amazing. There has always been someone to help me along the way whether it be to help with course work, finance questions or creating a CV for employment. In my third year I would have been lost without my project supervisor. He was so supportive and helpful while I was completing my finalyear project.” Aime Leahy BSc (Hons) Psychology
