Careers Built on Excellence and Pride

“You wake up early, you go to the site and start building things. You can see how proud people are of the things they build” Alfred has always had a passion for engineering. That’s why he chose to study Civil Engineering at UEL for his first degree. “UEL Civil Engineering was ranked Top 10 in The Times and that motivated me to study at my local university.”

working you have to learn a lot and quickly, but UEL gave me a head start there.” Studying at UEL was also a plus when it came to finding work with leading design, engineering and project management company Atkins; “they knew that studying at UEL meant I had practical experience. My supervisory experience was particularly valuable to them.”

Like many of our students, Alfred gained vital experience through a series of placements on engineering projects taking place in east London with companies such as Laing Rourke with whom he spent 12 weeks. “I was involved with the design team for two of the big footbridges at the Olympic Park, making sure they were suitable for disabled access and for bicycles.”

These days Alfred is on the Atkins structural engineering team, designing bridges for London Underground and Network Rail. Atkins supported him for his MSc in Structural Engineering because they knew Alfred’s advanced skills would enable them to continue to win major projects in one of the engineering capitals of the world, East London.

Applying the theory and practice he’d learned, Alfred gained a First Class Honours degree in Civil Engineering. “When you first start

History being made every day

MA Communicating Global Development

“Nothing happens in the world that doesn’t happen in the East End.”

MA Contemporary Performance MA Filmmaking

This well-known quotation from east London-based artists and international icons, Gilbert and George, sums up why east London is such a fascinating and enriching place in which to develop your own art and creative profession.

MA Fine Art Prof Doc Fine Art (DFA) MA Heritage Studies MA Theatre Directing MA Writing: Imaginative Practice (Distance Learning)

Walking through the East End you can feel the history enveloping you – histories of immigration: Huguenots, Jews, and Bangladeshi communities and the influences that were brought to London in the shapes of culture, food, fashion, literature, opinions, commerce. A history of ideas: suffragettes, socialism, communism. A history of survival and transformation: slum clearance, the Blitz, tube disasters, gentrification. And a history of creativity: David Garrick’s performances, White Cube, Banksy, Young British Artists, Roa. You can feel the history of tomorrow being made here right now. Our teaching and research directly taps into these themes, still very much alive and thriving in the East End: film, fine art, writing, heritage, directing, acting and performance making. Your tutors and teachers are practitioners themselves, still discovering new ideas, still sharing their energy and experience – giving you the room to develop your own direction in a freedom informed by historical context and technical mastery. Explore your passions: break through to the next level and take your own place in one of the most creative and exciting places in the world. UEL’s School of Arts & Digital Industries, like the East End itself, undoubtedly provides the perfect environment in which to develop your own art and creative profession.

Academic Support and Freedom to Develop My Vision

When I was studying for my undergraduate degree I formed my own company – Pregnant Fish Theatre – with some other students. We wanted to promote the idea of intimate, stripped back performances for ‘pocket money prices’ to make theatre more accessible.

When I was looking round for somewhere to do a Master’s, UEL and East London was the obvious choice. There’s so much talent and activity moving eastwards in London – like Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop and the Theatre Royal, Stratford. There’s a real energy in the area.

In 2012 I wrote and directed a new adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Gray which premiered in London and then toured in Exeter and the Edinburgh Fringe. So I’d had some success before I decided to study for an MA. I wanted to make sure that my experience was being underpinned by learning and I was looking for an environment in which I could nurture my ideas.

Dominic Hingorani, the course leader, and his team really got my pared-back approach to productions so I felt I’d found a natural home. They are so immersed in theatre and academic work, and they’ve got great networks with different organisations and companies, which is helpful in getting work. I studied while I was working on my piece ‘Twentysomething’ and got lots of support. We got great reviews and were a ‘top pick’ at the Exeter Ignite Festival in 2014, something I’m really proud of. I am currently workshopping for new shows, and have started my PhD on my theatre methodology.

Business and Law for the local and global community Business is a fascinating subject with endless permutations. From the market stall to the giant global corporation, basic principles are the same; applying them in different contexts provides a rich complexity that rewards close study and research. Similarly in law: on the one hand it is very simple, on the other, it is open to endless interpretation. At UEL we understand this duality and we operate successfully in both worlds. If you are an emerging entrepreneur or looking for a service based career, we can help. If you are looking to deepen your legal knowledge so that you can make a difference in your community, we can help. If you’re operating on a much bigger scale, we have the knowledge and thought leadership to match. One of our law graduates, Imran Khan, was part of the team that successfully prosecuted the Stephen Lawrence case: a local case, though with national and global repercussions. This is the story of east London – the idea that starts small but goes on to make a global impact. For that reason we reflect both points of view in all our teaching and research. From our base in Stratford, we can observe it all. At UEL we are connected to it all. Boosting careers We’ll give you the chance to learn from the best academic minds and industry experts, in an environment that encourages you to think beyond the boundaries of traditional disciplines. Employability is of course part of our DNA, along with a sense of community responsibility. Our postgraduate education enhances your employability and brings value to society. Research ambition Our research centres reflect east London’s long history of international trade between diverse communities, banking, and innovation and include: — Our new Centre on Counter Terrorism Studies which has close links with the UK Government Home Office and Foreign and Commonwealth Office and provides a forum for our world-class academic reputation in research in counter terrorism, paramilitary vigilantism and security. — Our Centre for the Study of States, Markets & People (STAMP) which is a major inter-disciplinary initiative focusing on the global and European political economy and the forms of governance and regulation needed to address socio-economic/financial issues and geo-political crises. UEL is a great place to boost your business knowledge: we are genuinely connected to global business networks on our doorstep, and to the local and global communities they serve.

Broader Business Knowledge and Big Ideas

I was working in a marketing role at Transport for London (TfL) – I was there for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games - and I felt that to be more effective and get a sharper edge, I needed to do an MBA. I wanted to expand my knowledge and expertise in the marketing sphere, and develop a broader commercial awareness. UEL was so convenient for me – very close to where I work and with classes in the evening. And it’s such a rich experience too with so many different aspects to studying business. We visited Canary Wharf and the Bloomberg offices to see business at that level. And we worked with a small sustainable worktop company to explore their business model. Derek Brewer from Lord’s and Marshall Wolf from the FT came to spend time with us so we got a really broad view of business issues.

Shaherah Jordan MBA

Personally I was really stretched. I studied economics for the first time which was a bit scary but my tutor made it very easy to grasp. She pushed us out of our comfort zone professionally, which was great. Like Jummy says, I returned to TfL with more confidence and knowledge. You look at yourself differently and I’ve had good feedback from my colleagues. I took advantage of UEL’s Innovation Centre to develop my own business idea based on technology and disruption. I had a big idea and they helped me take it further. My goals are now bigger. I always thought of myself as ambitious, but now I’ve set the bar even higher for myself.

Teachers, Learners, Partners

“I go into schools like Kulvarn’s and work with Teaching Assistants (TAs), teachers and leadership teams so they can make sure they’re using all their resources effectively. TAs are a huge untapped resource and, over the years, I’ve trained over 500 of them” says Paula. “It’s about helping teachers plan to ensure, for example, that their TAs don’t always work with the same children, as well as helping the TAs themselves boost children’s independence”. Because of our huge practical experience, UEL is able to influence national policy by working with bodies like the Institute of Education (IoE), the Education Endowment Foundation, and unions to develop guidelines. Paula has co-authored research papers with the IoE, and has published a book, ‘A Teaching Assistant’s Guide to Effective Interaction’. She adds: “I also supervise a lot of MA students’ dissertations, students such as Kulvarn’s staff”.

Wayne has trained teachers in hundreds of schools on guided reading techniques, such as questioning skills and understanding how children make inferences, which are the most important aspect of text comprehension. “Teaching children how to do this crucial, and this is what makes the programme I run unique. It’s a flexible approach, and teachers can adapt their strategies to different age groups, as I explain in my book, ‘Understanding Reading Comprehension’ says Wayne. “We’ve already seen reading scores go up in schools we work with – and local authorities from Somerset to Hull have expressed interest. I’m also working with publishers Pearson on their new guided reading programme.” As Kulvarn says, it is these types of active partnerships – with staff and researchers exchanging and trialling new ideas – that makes UEL’s approach so responsive, relevant and successful. It is the ideal postgraduate partner for today’s engaged teaching professional.

Cutting Edge, Globally Relevant Research Culture

I did a year as an undergraduate at an Italian university before transferring to UEL to complete my BSc degree in Pharmacology and Medical Microbiology. I transferred because I wanted to do research, and there wasn’t much of that going on where I was. As a UEL undergraduate, I had the chance to do practical workshops and get hands-on experience. In my third year, I also did a Research Internship, funded by a bursary from the Graduate School. This involved spending ten weeks in the summer working with David Guiliano on what became the pilot study for my PhD. At the time, I didn’t know exactly what fields I wanted to research – you develop that over time – but one of my modules focused on infection and immunology, and I got really interested in those areas. I moved away from UEL for a while because I wanted to get experience of other laboratories. I did an MSc on drug discovery skills at King’s College London with six months at a pharmaceutical company. My PhD research application was accepted at three institutions – including Public Health England and pharmaceutical company GSK – but I chose to return to UEL because I’d enjoyed the research I’d done there.

Alessia Taccogna PhD Student

My research focuses on oral vaccine delivery using a probiotic yeast called Saccharomyces boulardii – the same sort you can buy in Holland & Barrett as a healthy gut drink. The idea is to deliver vaccines using a pill, rather than by injection. For developing countries, this could cut shipping costs and make vaccination programmes much cheaper. Injectables have a much shorter shelf life, for one, and you also need nurses and doctors to deliver them, whereas you don’t with a simple pill. The model we’re using contains a vaccine targeting a common parasite called Trichinella spiralis, but it could potentially be adapted in future to deliver other vaccines, treat stomach infections or administer cancer therapeutics. Vaccines can take decades to develop, and this is just the first step, but we could be onto something important. I’ve seen the research culture at UEL increase hugely in the past few years. There are many more PhD students – a lot of them working in biosciences. Doing a PhD can sometimes be a lonely business so we all sit in the same office and help each other. There’s always someone you can go to for help. We’re basically one big research family.

Our Global Reputation Attracts Global Achievers

I’d been working in executive coaching and positive psychology for many years before I did a diploma in it at the University of Mexico in 2008. After that, I wanted to formalise my training further and get my Master’s degree as I knew that’s where my long term professional future lay. I could have taken my pick of any course, I guess, but I narrowed it down to one in the US and UEL’s MSc Applied Positive Psychology; my practice runs across both Mexico and the UK, but I thought that the UEL course was more applied, so I chose to go there and base myself in London. For me, the course highlights were the modules where we learned more about the practice of positive psychology – including how it developed historically – as well as the latest developments in the field, which the research staff of course shared. There was a lot of material to cover, so everyone had to be an independent learner.

Oriana Tickell MSc Applied Positive Psychology

It makes a real difference that you’re taught by staff who are research-active. My tutors — particularly Itai Ivtzan, Kate Heffron and Tim Lomas – all worked very hard to ensure their teaching was relevant to the real world, which was important to me, and their research seems to be moving the subject forward in a wider context too. The MSc has helped me to completely redefine my practice. I now work as an organisational consultant, change expert, team and executive coach. It takes time and effort to master the disciplines of coaching and positive psychology, and I feel the course helped me do that successfully – enabling me to grow my business and take it in interesting new directions.

Professional development or academic interest? If you want to develop your professional or academic interest in the Social Sciences, there can be few more culturally diverse, historically rich and intellectually stimulating settings than east London. And, we believe, there is no other School of Social Sciences that is better connected to this world, or more actively engaged in the most pressing issues of our global world, its shifting boundaries and its transient populations. Whether you’re considering a Master’s or PhD, you will want to be certain that you’re being taught by people who are right up-to-date with the emerging issues of your subject, people who are actively researching and contributing new knowledge to these areas. You’ll be reassured, then, that our Sociology submission to the 2014 Research Excellence Framework was the highest-rated of any modern university, and one of the largest in the country with 75% of its work judged of international significance and 10% rated as world class. 75% of our Social Policy and Social Work research was judged as of international quality. Career development or career change The issues with which we deal benefit from multiple viewpoints and that is why we welcome students from such diverse backgrounds. If you have been working with immigrant or refugee communities, volunteering or involved in the charity sector, our postgraduate courses can help you to make the next step in your career or to build a completely new one. Research that is current and impactful Our research centres are genuinely unique and use their east London location — with its long history of diaspora and immigration — to tap into global issues in a way that is authoritative and has real impact. Our centres include: — The Centre for East London Studies (CELS) which is stimulating debates about the changing nature of east London and the impact of initiatives such as urban regeneration. — Our Centre for Narrative Research is the leading international voice for this area. Interdisciplinary in approach, it recently started working with residents at the Jungle refugee camp in Calais on a Life Stories project. — The Centre for Research on Migration, Refugees and Belonging (CMRB) has internationally recognised expertise in this very current area. Its location in east London is ideal as one of the best established hubs of international settlement, historically and to the present day. CMRB oversees the Refugee Council Archive and other valuable collections. More postgraduate research opportunities The School has a growing number of PhD research students and we are keen to expand. We have always seen research students as an integral part of our research strategy and would be delighted to welcome you to our community.

Underpinning Professional Experience with Academic Knowledge

I’m originally from Zambia and have lived in the UK since 2004. For the last few years I’ve been balancing a career in health and social care locally with my passion for change on a global scale, working with people of the African Diaspora. So my day to day role is supporting people with learning disabilities in Westminster. My ‘other life’ is as the Founder and CEO of Diaspora for African Development (DfAD) which I started in 2012. Experiences in my own life, including a research trip to Japan, made me ask myself, ‘what have I done for my country?’ So I formed the Zambian Diaspora Development Network which later became DfAD. As part of my work I’ve met and worked with organisations like Comic Relief, DFID and the UN; I’ve even been to Downing Street. I believe there is room for a different model in international development, one which empowers and utilises the skills of diaspora communities around the world. .

Around 2014 I started to feel that although I had a huge amount of experience, I still had gaps in my knowledge. As a selftaught practitioner, I didn’t know everything I needed to know. So I looked for a course that would specifically help me underpin my knowledge, teach me about programme management and develop my critical thinking and confidence to undertake analysis. The UEL course was exactly what I needed. Meera took me on and guided me throughout my Master’s. I loved that I was able to study in the evening and the library being open 24/7 was a real bonus. I made some good friends and also became a civic engagement manager for UEL, encouraging active citizenship in Stratford. The course at UEL is unique and so important to me. Without doing the MSc, I’d not have the legitimacy to carry on doing what I’m doing or apply for policy roles in Zambia. Without UEL my vision would not come to pass but now I know I can achieve it.

I’m the Head of Global Studies in UEL’s School of Social Sciences. I’m also a Reader and Senior Lecturer, teaching on the MSc NGO and Development Management course that Chibwe took. I specialise in multidimensional poverty, the capability approach and sustainable human development. My research interests include exploring social and economic poverties in the developing world, as well as deprivation in both the North and South, and how globalisation can be made to work for the most vulnerable communities. I’ve published widely on these topics. We aim to make our students more informed as cultural development practitioners by giving them a sound theoretical and intellectual grounding for their work. We train them in practical skills such as lobbying, project management, programme development, writing briefing papers, research and critical thinking. These are the

kind of skills that Chibwe has been putting into practice in his work. It is so rewarding to see our research and teaching inspiring this type of positive change. Our academic team are very research-active in NGO and development issues. We have team members who are specialists in countries such as South Asia, Africa and Latin America, or in issues such as faith-based development, humanitarian work and impact evaluation. Many of our students already hold senior roles in the Third Sector or similar organisations; Alison Shutt is Collaborative Director with the Royal Free Hospital. Several of our graduates like Marsha Jones and Chibwe Henry have set up their own NGOs, using their learning to make a real difference in the world.

“ My PhD research application was accepted at three institutions – including Public Health England and pharmaceutical company GSK – but I chose to return to UEL because I’d enjoyed the research I’d done there. My research focuses on oral vaccine delivery using a probiotic yeast. This is just the first step, but we could be on to something important.” Alessia Taccogna PhD student
