in the UK for the impact of our Psychology research, beating Oxford and Cambridge (latest REF, 2014).

I have been taught by professors, active researchers and OBE lecturers with a long history in the industry and academia. That’s what you call first-class teaching. The diversity of great minds under one roof is a big bonus, and there's a tremendously friendly community. Bringing the real world into the class made my study more interactive, and I fell in love even more with my subject. Aurica Auras Aurica studied BSc (Hons) Economics for her undergraduate degree and is now studying on our MSc Finance and Risk programme.

Many of our teaching staff are world leaders in their field, with rich professional experience. You could be taught by a Turner Prizewinning sculptor, a former business leader, a terrorism advisor to national governments, or an award-winning British filmmaker.

Whoever you are taught by, you can be sure that you will receive a huge amount of personal support during your studies. And you’ll be enriched by the amazing variety of backgrounds and cultures represented in our vibrant university. When you leave UEL, you’ll be a workready individual with the confidence to tackle any challenge.

Our academics bring their research into the classroom, too, ensuring that what you learn represents the very latest thinking in your subject.

students were nominated by community partners for an Outstanding Contribution to Volunteering Award.

10,657 volunteering hours clocked up in the last two years.

As a student, this means giving you the opportunity for personal development by working on pioneering research and real-life projects that benefit communities locally and around the world. Legal Advice Centre Our acclaimed Legal Advice Centre is just one example of how we engage with local people. Staffed by volunteer tutors and students, the centre provides free legal services and public lectures to the east London community. And, of course, it’s fantastic work experience for our student lawyers. University for All: Teaching in the Jungle At UEL we believe that education is an important human right. Staff and students put this principle into practice, delivering the accredited course ‘Life Stories’ to residents of the ‘Jungle’ refugee camp in Calais. The course was such a success that it won the Guardian Award for Widening Participation in Higher Education, and is now being extended to improve access to higher education elsewhere. Step Up to Stop Hate When a crime takes place, why do some people run away, others reach for their camera phone while others intervene? Step Up to Stop Hate was designed to answer these questions. Students ran peer-to-peer workshops for young people (aged 16+) in local schools and colleges to raise awareness and understanding of hate speech and hate crime, also giving practical guidance on how to act and seek support as a victim or bystander. ... and many more projects Our students have composed gospel music with local schoolchildren, set up a dairy farm in Ghana, run projects in financial literacy, promoted lung cancer awareness, and lots more.

Flexible study options

Mature students

Part-time study is offered on many courses, enabling you to work while you learn. Courses take place in the evening or weekend, helping you to complete a qualification that will open doors to a promotion or a career change.

As an inclusive university, we’re proud to welcome students of all backgrounds and all ages. Mature students (over the age of 21) make up almost half of our undergraduate population. If you have life or work experience that is relevant to your course, and can demonstrate your commitment to study, we can equip you to succeed.

Our online and distance learning courses are perfect if you want to complete a degree from the comfort of your own home. You can also choose to complete some modules online and some in the classroom at our campuses in east London. We also offer pre-entry courses and foundation years. These allow you to start an undergraduate degree if you don’t quite meet the entry requirements. UEL is proud to be one of a limited number of institutions that offer this route into higher education.

Degree Apprenticeships If you’re looking to begin an exciting new career or develop your skills with the support of your employer, we offer a growing range of degree apprenticeships, including:

If you have been away from education for some time, New Beginnings is a short part-time course that will help you to utilise the skills you have gained from your work and life experiences to prepare for studying in higher education. Upon completion you can progress to many of our undergraduate courses.

Childcare Being a parent is no bar to studying with us. We’ve got fantastic facilities at our Docklands campus, so your children can be cared for while you’re attending lectures. We can also help you with applications for childcare funding – including Parents’ Learning Allowance and childcare grants.

I was worried about fitting in and going back to education after six years. I found many others on my course who were in the same boat but eager to learn and succeed. By applying our knowledge from the working world we have all exceeded our own expectations, and I have UEL to thank for the opportunity. Jake Herridge Jake is studying BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering. 12

U LEARN ‘Learning by doing’ is central to the way we teach. Whatever subject you choose to study, our courses are designed to apply your developing expertise to real-life projects – so you’ll be prepared for the world of work. The way we teach is tailored to you. ——

At UEL, assessments reflect the real world of work. Your grades will often be based on reports and presentations, helping to prepare you for the tasks you’ll encounter in the workplace.

——

Interactive rather than passive learning. Our course modules are designed around debate, exploration, research, critical thinking and practical work.

——

Individual learning. When it comes to learning, we don’t believe education should be about cramming hundreds of students into a lecture theatre. At UEL you’ll benefit from an emphasis on individual ways of teaching, and tailored feedback.

——

In addition to your degree, you can complete our unique Professional Development Certificate, choosing from modules such as global citizenship, volunteering, mentoring, social media and communications, entrepreneurship, dispute resolution and coaching. You’ll gain essential skills that will help you to stand out to prospective employers.

WHERE WO EXPERIENCE MATTERS 14

ORK E

My course involves me working in the University’s law clinic on real cases. This experience makes UEL stand out from other universities as there's a big emphasis on practical work. Gabriel Osamor Gabriel is a final year LLB (Hons) Law student, and was chosen for the prestigious 2017 London Mayor entrepreneurship internship.

We’ve made sure that every course builds in employability skills and work experience opportunities. Whatever course you’re studying, we’ll help you to gain the skills you need to succeed. Our internship, placement and volunteering activities are embedded within many of our courses. They’re designed to complement the curriculum and put the theory you learn into action in the real world. Our unique location in the financial and creative heart of London provides fantastic opportunities to gain hands-on experience in your chosen profession before you graduate. For example, our fashion students have designed clothing for Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie and uniforms for the NHS, our architecture students have worked on real design briefs, and our sports therapy students have treated marathon runners in Berlin and footballers at West Ham and Millwall. The University has close links for placements and internships with: ——

Household names like Atkins, AstraZeneca, BBC, Endemol, Hitachi, Microsoft, River Island and Vivienne Westwood.

——

Voluntary and political organisations, such as the British Red Cross, Amnesty International, Médecins Sans Frontieres, Unison and Citizens UK Movement for Change.

——

Government departments and international bodies, from the Home Office to the US Department of Justice, FBI and United Nations.

Our students have made study trips to over 30 countries, travelling as far afield as Ghana, Vietnam, Iran, Jamaica and India. Students have coached underprivileged children in Malaysia, trained in martial arts in China and provided sports therapy to runners in the Berlin Marathon. At UEL, you can choose to travel abroad for a week, a month or even a year, enabling you to fit overseas study around your life and work commitments.

WHERE PROJECTS TAKE YOU PLACES 16

It was a truly fantastic trip and I would love to do it again. The experience really helped to enhance what I’d learned in class. Tannaz Arang, BSc (Hons) Health Services Management. Tannaz went on a study trip to Buffalo, New York, to examine drug policy in the US.

Study abroad for a week, a month or even a year: —— Global Scholars, take a short visit abroad to enhance your studies and add a global dimension to your UEL experience. ——

International exchange, study for a term or a year in an overseas university, across a choice of five continents.

Erasmus+, spend a term or a year at a partner university in Europe.

The Erasmus+ programme is the reason I wanted to come to UEL. It meant I could study in the UK and Germany – one of the best places for engineering and product design. Sam Hughes, BSc (Hons) Product Design. Sam studied in Germany for three months as part of the Erasmus+ programme.

Why us?

Our courses have an immediate and real practical impact on people’s lives and wellbeing. They demand special people who want to improve society and who want to make a difference in their community. One of our students from Uganda told us, “I want to go back afterwards to apply what I’ve learned — and I want my children to be proud of the work I do.” UEL has an internationally renowned Institute for Health and Human Development (IHHD), which regularly carries out research across the UK and overseas. One of our Health Services Management students, on secondment from the London Ambulance Service, produced an acclaimed thesis on improving the service’s call-out efficiency. Some of his recommendations were later implemented by the service.

Our work placement, volunteering and community project opportunities will help prepare you for work.

As the need for projects to deliver good health globally becomes more urgent, public health has become a growth business. The industry needs welltrained graduates to address the crucial issue of public health. Our graduates have gone on to work for employers including Public Health England, local authorities, national government and the civil service, the NHS, charities and social enterprises. They’ve become public health educators or specialists. They’ve worked in voluntary organisations in the UK and abroad, or advised on policy.

It’s not all about note-taking and tutorial rooms. We like our students to learn in different ways. On our courses you'll roll up your sleeves and throw yourself into practical tasks. With a growing need for health professionals in all areas, our committed, supportive and expert staff will prepare you for a career in this wide-ranging field. It could be in the NHS, private health services, community health organisations or the related commercial sector. Employers like, need and want UEL graduates. That’s because by the time you leave us, you’ll have gained real-life experiences and applied training, which makes you exceptional guardians of the nation’s health.

Our courses equip you to make a difference. One of our Public Health students was persuaded by her five children to take up a place at the University of East London through Clearing. While studying, she volunteered for the London Borough of Enfield’s public health department. Inspired by her course, she has since established stop-smoking campaigns outside primary schools, an initiative which spread through the borough, and organised a series of pioneering health awareness events with different healthcare organisations.
