Media Journ From television and film to audio and mobile communication, modern life is being reshaped by the media and communication environment. At UEL, our courses offer the perfect mix of practice and theory, propelling you towards a rewarding future in the creative industries. You’ll have the exciting opportunity to learn practical skills while taking advantage of our unrivalled facilities, including a dedicated film production studio and edit suites and UEL’s unique Writing Centre - which presents a lively programme of events including readings by visiting authors. Our courses are taught by internationally renowned academics and expert professional practitioners who have made an impact in the world of film, television, writing and reporting, We have superb industry connections, from top news organisations to film production companies. Our students have had work placements at newspapers such as the Daily Mail and The Times, while others have had the chance to work at Pride magazine, Time Warner, The Voice and the Financial Times, as well as television, postproduction and PR agencies.

From street billboards to TV catchphrases, from the back of newspapers to the front of football shirts, from internet pop-ups to… well, anywhere with an empty space to fill. It’s a huge, rich part of our everyday life and cultural experience – and it’s changing fast. At the University of East London, we offer you a unique insight into this exciting, swift-moving world. BA (Hons) Film UCAS code: W620 / Points: 112 BA (Hons) Film at UEL offers an original combination of moving image production and film studies, where filmmaking is theoretically engaged and theory informs creativity. You study the character and conditions of cinema and film, locating the significance of motion pictures in the long view of their historical development. You have the opportunity to develop the craft skills of cinematic production through modules focused on documentary, fiction, screenwriting and avant-garde filmmaking. The moving image studio and

BA (Hons) Journalism UCAS code: P500 / Points 112 On our increasingly well-regarded journalism course we develop enquiring minds so that you will be the ones to report tomorrow’s stories and find the answers to today’s questions. If you want to become a journalist and explore what journalism is and where it’s heading, this is the perfect course for you. Guided by staff with 100 years of combined journalistic expertise between them, you’ll be given a practical grounding in print, radio, photo and online journalism.

MA Media, Communication and Global Development Are you interested in engaging with some of the most important topics in today’s globalised world while enhancing your analytical and media production skills? We will provide you with a conducive environment to learn about and participate in debates such as: What is the role of citizen journalists in mediating

MA Media and Communication Industries The media industries that inform and entertain are also leading sectors of employment. This course explores both the cultural and economic aspects of media. Today, more than ever, media professionals need to understand the cultures, forms and practices of contemporary communication industries, and recognize and respond to changing conditions, challenges and policy issues. You will explore media and marketing communications industries from the global to the local, and from political economic aspects to the creativity of media practitioners and users. You will examine contemporary convergence across media, marketing and promotional
industries and will be supported in your independent investigation into chosen aspects of digital publishing, audiovisual and social media, advertising, public relations and other marketing communications industries.

Events and competitions ADI Summer Showcase The end of each academic year culminates in the ADI Summer Showcase, in which students exhibit their year’s work and showcase their achievements. The event is attended by industry, partners and potential employers and is a celebration of student talent.
Creative Competitions Across the year you have the opportunity to display your talents in creative competitions in which teams develop media outputs, often competing with teams from other universities. The final results are often judged by industry professionals, who offer internships and prizes for the winners.

Careers Media and journalism are, of course, competitive worlds to enter. You’ll have a head start at UEL, thanks to teachers with exceptional contacts who know exactly what newspapers, radio stations and other media outlets are looking for. They will support you with extracurricular activities that focus on entrepreneurship and employability. Our students have gone on to jobs in television, film, journalism, publishing, advertising and public relations as well as careers in teaching and education. One of our graduates went on to become an editor of The Sun, Britain’s biggest-selling daily newspaper. Another of our alumni became the editor of The Irish Post within three years of graduating. Other graduates have gone on to pursue work at ITN, and to write for major TV soap operas — including EastEnders. Others have chosen to continue their studies, taking an MA in Creative Writing or a PhD in Journalism.
