Media and Sc Media and screen courses are taught by active researchers and professional practitioners. The courses are structured to provide a supportive environment that encourages students to challenge preconceptions and to experiment with ideas. Courses cover a range of theoretical debates and offer professionally informed practical elements, with excellent opportunities for placements and work experience. Students are supported by our wide range of resources, which include video studios, the games production studios, the moving image studio, a range of edit suites, computing facilities and a comprehensive equipment store. Students are also able to work with our partners and gain professional expertise in their chosen discipline. We have been rated by our students in the national student survey (NSS)- top modern university in London for all measures. Top for all of London in assessment and feedback, academic support and learning resources.

Undergraduate courses Media and Screen degrees with foundation years

Our undergraduate media and screen courses at the University of East London are enriched by international networks and industry collaborations, allowing you to develop your passion and skills and prepare you for your career.

Extended degrees offer an alternative route into higher education for students who do not have the traditional qualifications to start an undergraduate degree, but who wish to progress onto study at Bachelor level in visually creative areas. These include media and communication, computer games design (story development), computer games development and digital media design. The course offers you broad experience across this range of creative disciplines, and combines the ambitions of a foundation course with the opportunity to progress directly onto the first year of a Bachelor’s degree following successful completion of the foundation year.

BA (Hons) Media & Communication UCAS code: P300 / Points: 112 The Media and Communication course offers a fresh and innovative diet of study, in which you will be introduced to a set of debates concerning media influence and ownership that will provide the context for media production. Offering specialist areas of study in television, radio, film, music,

publishing, marketing communications, social media and convergent digital media, the course will enable you to consider media and communication in relation to the broader themes of culture, creative work and the imaginative life of society. BA (Hons) Computer Games Design (Story Development) UCAS code: GWLF / Points: 112 The BA (Hons) Computer Games Design (Story Development) course focuses on designing games and developing gameplay with an emphasis on the role of story and narrative design. You develop a range of skills, including level design, 2D/3D graphic asset production, gameplay programming, paper and electronic prototyping, visual design and plot and character development. The course allows you to develop creative writing skills with a focus on how these relate to game design. At


every level you will work on group projects in multidisciplinary teams to design and develop games. With foundation year: UCAS code: G610 / Points 72

BSc (Hons) Computer Games Development UCAS code: G453 / Points: 112 The BSc (Hons) Computer Games Development course enables you to develop your talents in software design and programming skills for the growing games industry. You will get the opportunity to study games development processes along with theories underpinning the design and development of computer games, with a focus on designing and implementing gameplay with various development tools. You will develop a range of skills, including: 2D/3D graphic asset production, programming in several industry-standard languages and game engines, multidisciplinary teamwork, and paper and electronic prototyping. At every level you will work on group projects in multidisciplinary teams to design and develop games. With foundation year: UCAS code: G455 / Points: 72

BSc (Hons) Digital Media Design UCAS code: WG2K / Points: 112 BSc (Hons) Digital Media Design at UEL offers an exciting opportunity to engage with concepts and practices across a range of platforms, including web-based media, mobile applications, location-based media and emerging digital technologies. You will have the opportunity to develop a range of skills, including creative design, interaction design, multimedia production, and app development, as well as understanding the user experience (UX). We have a dedicated UX lab in which you can test user experiences employing our innovative techniques. You also work with real clients to produce cutting-edge interactive and multimedia experiences. BA (Hons) Film UCAS code: W620 / Points: 112 BA (Hons) Film at UEL offers an original combination of moving image production and film studies, where filmmaking is theoretically engaged and theory informs creativity.

You study the character and conditions of cinema and film, locating the significance of motion pictures in the long view of their historical development. You have the opportunity to develop the craft skills of cinematic production through modules focused on documentary, fiction, screenwriting and avant-garde filmmaking. The moving image studio and media production service support you through workshops and skills development and you have access to bespoke, cutting edge facilities. Postgraduate courses MA Filmmaking Learn from leading filmmakers in world-class facilities and you could soon be following in the footsteps of UEL alumni who are enjoying successful careers in the worlds of film production and exhibition, artists’ moving image and academic film studies. Enhance your career with industry led Master’s courses at the University of East London. Our Master’s courses are enriched by international networks and industry collaborations.

Our innovative MA Filmmaking course, believes its biggest strength is its diversity. With a combination of theory and practice, you’ll learn about documentary, fiction, artists’ film and multichannel installation and you’ll explore your own creative voice by completing five or more projects, culminating in a substantial thesis film. You’ll be based in the moving image studio, our flagship research and production centre, where you’ll develop your understanding of the intricate processes of moving image production through the teaching of practising filmmakers and video artists, some of whom are world-renowned in their field.

As well as our own academic team, you’ll gain valuable insights from visiting filmmakers and artists. Recently, we’ve welcomed Peter Strickland, the Berlin Festival Golden Bear-winning director, and Leonie Benesch, star of the Palme d’Or-winning film The White Ribbon.

Events and competitions ADI Summer Showcase The end of each academic year culminates in the ADI Summer Showcase, in which students exhibit their year’s work and showcase their achievements. The event is attended by industry, partners and potential employers and is a celebration of student talent.

Creative Competitions Across the year you have the opportunity to display your talents in creative competitions in which teams develop media outputs, often competing with teams from other universities. The final results are often judged by industry professionals, who offer internships and prizes for the winners.

Nordic Game Jam Recently a group of our undergraduate Games students had the opportunity to travel to Copenhagen and take part in one of the biggest video game Jams in the world as part of their course. At Nordic Game Jam 2016, UEL students designed a game around the jam’s competition theme of ‘leak’. Their game received 1,277 favorable downloads in one week and the team reached number 15 out of 187 in the competition rankings. The team also got the chance to present their game to more than 800 jam attendees. The game was voted ‘best free PC game’ by a well- known games website. Students also got the chance to network at the Jam with other individuals and competitors from international universities.
