Many things have changed since 1898 and the founding of the technology institute which would eventually become the modern, forward-looking University of East London of today. But our desire to make a real difference to people’s lives through the work of our students and staff remains as strong as ever. We aim to be London’s leading university for civic engagement. As a student, you will gain the opportunity to deepen your learning experience by working on real-life projects that benefit communities locally and around the world. By helping others you’ll gain the skills, values and experience that will help you become a confident, stand-out individual – and highly attractive to employers.
Civic engagement in action: Our acclaimed Legal Advice Centre is just one example of the work we’re doing. This is a busy law clinic in Stratford where our law students, supervised by qualified lawyers, provide free legal advice to local people. It’s a valuable community service for people seeking advice about issues such as employment rights, landlord and tenant disputes and welfare benefits. And, of course, it’s fantastic experience for our student lawyers.

‘Learning by doing’ is central to the way we teach. Whichever subject you choose to study, you’ll be able to apply your developing knowledge and expertise to real-life community projects – either as a course module or through volunteering. When it comes to learning on campus, we don’t believe education should be about cramming hundreds of students into a lecture theatre. That’s why we’re moving towards smaller class sizes and more individual ways of teaching. It’s about interactive rather than passive learning – acquiring knowledge through debate, exploration, research, critical thinking and practical work. Our belief in interactive learning means we’re taking a pioneering lead when it comes to technology. New undergraduates will be given a free Samsung tablet, pre-loaded with core textbooks. In 2014, we were the first university in the UK to give tablets to its entire first-year intake.

This exciting course will develop your creative skills along with your technical expertise. As a product designer you’ll be creating items that answer people’s needs and improve their lives. You’ll develop advanced skills in areas such as such as sketching, rendering, presentation techniques, model-making and manufacture. During the course you’ll develop creative and technical skills, and we’ll give you a thorough grounding in applied production, engineering and materials exploration and technology.
Our course offers an in-depth understanding of the causes of disease and the practical ways in which they can be investigated in the laboratory. These are the fundamental areas of knowledge that you’ll need as a biomedical scientist.

FASHION MARKETING
INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
BA (Hons) uel.ac.uk/int-ug-fashion-marketing
BA (Hons) uel.ac.uk/int-ug-int-development
What you’ll learn on our new Fashion Marketing course is an art in its own right. Others may create the garment but it is the creative marketers who turn it into a must-have, mustwear commodity.
The majority of the world’s people live in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Middle East. International Development is the study of their societies and the relationship between them and the rest of the world.
We’ll teach you how to retail, brand, and merchandise fashion. You’ll discover promotional and sales strategies, learning how to take a new fashion product from the concept stage all the way to the high street store.
Our academic staff will share their passion for the subject, their world-renowned research and their experiences of working in these areas of the world.
You’ll do this in close collaboration with your fashion design and fashion textiles student colleagues at UEL. This is crucial for you to gain the clearest, broadest picture of an industry that, as marketers, you’ll need to understand inside out.
International Development graduates from UEL are in demand internationally. Past students have gone on to work for global agencies including the World Health Organisation and Voluntary Services Overseas. Why us?
Why us? We expect our Fashion Marketing graduates to reap the same sort of success in the business that so many University of East London Fashion students have enjoyed. Our dedicated Fashion Marketing course could prepare you to take up a career in a related area such as merchandising, buying, public relations, fashion journalism, campaign management and trend prediction. Three of last year’s graduates, who studied marketing as part of their design course, have already gone on to land jobs as buyers for Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie, and for the classic British brand Marks and Spencer.
International Development graduates from UEL have gone on not just to join but in some cases found their own prominent non-governmental organisations in developing countries. We arrange a regular series of guest lectures by development scholars and practitioners, giving you insight from experts in the field about the realities of what we teach you. International Development has possibly the most diverse student intake in the whole of UEL, attracted by its reputation and the opportunities it opens up. We value your personal experiences and encourage you to bring them to the debates that are part of this course.
You’ll get noticed on our fashion courses, especially when your abilities are showcased at the annual Graduate Fashion Week show, which is attended by some of the industry’s leading creative talents.

Energy and mineral resources is an increasingly important and complex sector. Governments, firms and citizens grapple with the legal and regulatory framework for resources extraction, the business risks, energy costs, threats of resources scarcity, environmental impacts and carbon emissions and climate change issues. As the law, policy and practice in the energy and minerals industry and its institutional framework continue to evolve to address the competing interests in the industry, this is an exciting time to study in the field. Our brand new LLM energy and natural resources offers a comparative and socio-legal approach to contemporary upstream and downstream oil and gas and minerals regulatory trends in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
On this course you will study different issues and perspectives in a historical and contemporary context, gaining an understanding of how the law and international politics and business interact and sometimes collide. uel.ac.uk/int-pg-psychology
The course fully integrates positive psychology and coaching psychology to create an innovative training programme for those promoting wellbeing.
This one-year full-time (or two-year part-time) course bridges the gap between BSc Psychology and doctoral-level training.
There is a growing recognition within the world’s coaching and positive psychology community that such integration is an important step forward, providing clients with a more openminded approach to their mental health. From the point of view of positive psychology, the course will have a strong foundation in cutting-edge theory and research relating to wellbeing. The coaching element will feature advanced training in working with clients and groups in professional capacities.
It is aimed at those who have had at least some experience in psychology services who want to go on to train as a researcher, a therapist, or a clinical, counselling or educational psychologist. You need not have a first degree in Psychology but your training and experience must be in a related area and demonstrate a suitable career trajectory. Getting onto a professional doctorate course is a highly competitive business but this MSc in a well-established, highly-regarded teaching environment could help give you the edge you need.
Why us? When you graduate from this course you will operate as a more flexible consultant or practitioner in a rapidly developing and increasingly sought-after field.
Why us? Our course, unlike most courses of this kind, is taught mainly by qualified and practising clinical psychologists.
You will be well versed in relevant scientific literature, with the confidence to apply this knowledge in your professional practice.
This course serves as a potential bridge between a Psychology or Psychology-related BSc and the prospect of doing further research or training or a professional doctorate.
This may involve working with individuals on a one-toone basis through executive coaching, or working at an organisational level using positive organisational scholarship.
Recent graduates have gone on to study for a PhD, or to work in NHS services, or undertake professional doctorates in Clinical, Educational and Counselling Psychology.
There is a significant demand for the skills that this integrated course develops.
The availability of intermediate exit points from this degree means that it is also a highly flexible way of returning to work with enhanced prospects.

You will also be well placed to apply for jobs such as junior/ assistant psychology posts, or research positions.

University of East London
PhD uel.ac.uk/int-phd
Our university, with its purpose-built iconic Docklands campus and historic Stratford campus located within a stone’s throw of the Olympic Park, is at the hub of Europe’s largest social regeneration initiative, one that is transforming the economic, cultural, and environmental prospects of a region stretching from Canary Wharf to the North Sea. Our critical contribution to that process has been recognised by the European Union and the UK government through the joint funding of Knowledge Dock, a UEL specialist knowledge transfer centre containing state of the art research facilities. UEL’s expertise is thus at the forefront of the government’s commitment to building sustainable communities. Our engagement takes many forms: promoting local involvement in public policy; capturing the oral histories of diaspora populations; developing entrepreneurial skills; designing sustainability into the transformed built environment; enabling participation for the excluded through digital media; fostering social and economic integration; and promoting physical and psychological health. Our MPhil, PhD and professional doctorate research programmes are fully engaged with these and many other areas critical to social, cultural, environmental, and economic regeneration. Given the diverse range of the region’s cosmopolitan communities and the global perspectives required for urban regeneration within a world city, UEL’s research is also truly international in scope. How to apply Prior to making your application, you are encouraged to identify a UEL school and supervisor which matches your area of interest.
