The University of East London has been pioneering futures since 1898: from the 2nd Industrial Revolution through to where we are now, the 4th. We are a careers-led university. “There are so many job opportunities available through Amazon Web Services, and it is such a careers boost. I’ve had recruiters engage with me via LinkedIn and opportunities seem endless.” Jake McMahon is a third year BA Digital and Technology Solutions student at the University of East London. Jake picked the University because of the Amazon Web Services programme which develops skills for cloud careers in growing fields.

What you do today will define tomorrow – here’s how some of our recent graduates are making an impact in the world.

“I’ve always had an interest in the IT Industry. Cloud is the hot topic of the century and I thought I need to stay one step ahead of the curve and put my skills into practice to stand out.” Jake works four days a week as a cybersecurity analyst and studies one day a week through Amazon Web Services educate programme. He has learnt valuable digital skills that are sought after and even more relevant in the postpandemic employment landscape. “I’ve had some great experiences and specialised in a variety of different areas. I have applied it in my studies and in the workplace. The pathways were interesting and informative. The fact that they were developed by experts within industry is particularly helpful as you’re learning up to date information.”

Meet Aisha: Social Science graduate Aisha joined us as a mature student after falling in love with our waterside campus. Studying at the University of East London helped her decide what direction she wanted to take her career.

“I came down with my husband and my kids, and we just took a walk along the waterside. I remember saying to myself ‘I want to be here’. There was something about the peace and calmness of sitting near the waterside. But what sold it most for me was the library. I fell in love with the library.” Aisha graduated from BSc Psychosocial Studies. It helped her decide on her next career move – and she joined us for our MSc Career Coaching course to develop specialist skills. “If I had to do it all again, I would definitely pick the University of East London” Aisha’s time here helped her become more confident – she benefited from on-going advice and encouragement from our social sciences lecturers. She even became a programme rep which gave her an opportunity to sit down with lecturers and voice other students’ concerns.

Enjoy unforgettable nights out East London nightlife is tough to beat. The streets of Shoreditch are lined with unique places to go, from Judge and Jury, a restaurant in an old courthouse, to Trapeze, a circusthemed bar. Dalston is another popular spot with all types of bars, from jazz to DJs. But perhaps one of London’s best kept secrets is Hackney Wick, with its warehouse spaces for raves and hidden bars.

Head to the shops Head to Westfield in Stratford and Canary Wharf for high-street shops, restaurants, cinemas, and more. Prefer to shop independent? Old Spitalfields Market is home to indie brands and Broadway Market is loved by foodies.

Escape to green spaces Mudchute City Farm is a 32-acre space dedicated to biodiversity – try horse riding or sample local produce with the Canary Wharf backdrop. East London is a creative hub of opportunity and innovation. Our corner of London is the most culturally diverse and exciting area in the capital. There’s so much art around, it spills on to buildings as bold street murals. If you have a free afternoon, we’d recommend designing your own tote at RAW Labs in Bow Arts or visiting Victoria Miro gallery, an ex-Victorian furniture factory.

East London is our home but we’re also well connected to the rest of the capital and the world. Our Docklands campus is located by a DLR station, London City Airport is just over the river, and the Elizabeth Line links nearby Custom House to Liverpool Street in 10 minutes. You can even get around by cable car at The Emirates Air Line. At Stratford, we’re a 10 minute walk from Stratford station – a major transport hub for London and the whole of the UK. Campus community meets city connections. We’re one of the only universities in London to have a self-contained campus – you’ll find almost everything you need at Docklands, and superb teaching spaces at our Stratford sites.

Jump off the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and you’re only steps away from our waterfront campus, home to many of our students. London City airport sits just across the river. Next door are some of the capital’s most famous venues including the Royal Drawing School at Trinity Buoy Wharf, O2 Arena and ExCel London - one of the biggest event spaces in the world. Join us and you’ll be able to make the most of facilities like our £21m sports facility, SportsDock, the Children’s Garden Nursery, various cafés, our library and more. It is home to our Institute of Performing Arts and we teach business, law and criminology here too. Our Legal Advice Centre gives students the opportunity to give back to the community by offering free advice to those unable to pay for it. We’ve invested £33 million in industry standard facilities including a student centre and help desk, specialist dance and performance art spaces, a Harvard lecture theatre with live capture technology and a simulated court room for mooting experience.

Dean Scholarships

The UTC Progression Scholarship Scheme supports our UTC students to embark on their undergraduate journey at the University of East London. There are three categories of scholarship: Standard, Gold and Platinum. All LDE UTC students are eligible for the Standard (£1,500) Scholarship. To be considered for the Gold (£2,000) and Platinum (£2,500) Scholarships, students will need to complete a consent form giving LDE UTC permission to share their profile data with UEL. Helena Kennedy Foundation Bursary The Helena Kennedy Foundation offers support to disadvantaged students who have overcome significant barriers in order to continue with their education at university level. Each year the Helena Kennedy Foundation invites FE Colleges and Sixth Form Colleges to nominate a student to receive a £2,250 bursary sponsored by the University of East London, to support their progression to higher education.
