Jake picked the University because of the Amazon Web Services programme which develops skills for cloud careers in growing fields. “I’ve always had an interest in the IT Industry. Cloud is the hot topic of the century and I thought I need to stay one step ahead of the curve and put my skills into practice to stand out.” Jake works four days a week as a cybersecurity analyst and studies one day a week through Amazon Web Services educate programme. It was at this point that someone told her about the University of East London. “I came down with my husband and my kids. And we just took a walk along the waterside. New to London? Looking for somewhere to live doesn’t have to be stressful.

Need to report an incident? We also run a ‘silent witness’ scheme so you can raise issues anonymously.

Life in halls

Save money on meals

Living in halls is a great way to meet other students. In the first few weeks of term, join us at a welcome talk where we’ll explain everything you need to know about halls and introduce you to the Residential Life team.

Worried about cooking for yourself? You can save money and enjoy homely meals with our catering plan. Grab breakfast from the Edge, Munch or Starbucks at Docklands campus or Stratford campus café. For dinner, head to the Edge. There’s even a live 'theatre station' where our chefs cook food to order.

Safe and secure Your safety is our top priority. Our on-campus security team are available 24/7– you’ll often see officers patrolling halls day and night. If you experience any problems, you can visit our helpdesk in the main atrium.

Depending on the plan you pick, you can benefit from five, ten or even twenty free days of meals.

Choosing to live in halls was one of the best decisions that I made in regards to my university experience. I made so many friends. In fact, the friends that I made while living in Jamilah house are the same friends that I’m really close to today. You meet so many new people, and you get to experience so many different cultures and foods.

Meet Ben – studying with autism

60

Undergraduate Study Guide - 2022

From college to university

Support from a peer mentor

Ben joined us to study history. Diagnosed with autism, he knew he might struggle to adapt to a new place and settle in. When he came here, there was already support in place to ease his transition from college to university.

One thing that really helped Ben was our peer-to-peer mentoring scheme. This is where we pair up new student with someone in their second or third year. Ben’s mentor helped him navigate around campus, showed him around the library and explained how to make the most of all our services. “A lot of people say the friends you make at university are friends for life. And I definitely did that. In each year, I gradually came out of my shell and interacted with more students.”

The University of East London felt like the sort of university that would meet my needs. Being someone with autism, it’s very difficult to adapt to new environments. When I came to the Open Day, I knew the support on offer would really help me” 61

University of East London - Pioneering Futures

Moving to university is a big step. And it can be even more challenging when you have autism. At our Open Day, Ben discovered how we could offer the support he needed to adjust to university, find his way around and prepare for his future.
