Civic engagement in action: Our acclaimed Legal Advice Centre is just one example of the work we’re doing. This is a busy law clinic in Stratford where our law students, supervised by qualified lawyers, provide free legal advice to local people. It’s a valuable community service for people seeking advice about issues such as employment rights, landlord and tenant disputes and welfare benefits. And, of course, it’s fantastic experience for our student lawyers.

We offer exciting opportunities for you to take your learning overseas, whether it’s examining the music industry in India, learning about the Great Depression in New York or studying business management in Seoul. In the past year, our students have made study trips to 28 countries, travelling as far afield as Ghana, Vietnam, Iran, Jamaica and India. Students have coached under-privileged children in Malaysia, trained in martial arts in China and provided sports therapy to runners in the Berlin Marathon.

‘Learning by doing’ is central to the way we teach. Whatever subject you choose to study, you’ll be able to apply your developing knowledge and expertise to real-life community projects – either as a course module or through volunteering. When it comes to learning on campus, we don’t believe education should be about cramming hundreds of students into a lecture theatre. That’s why we’re moving towards smaller class sizes and more individual ways of teaching. It’s about interactive rather than passive learning – acquiring knowledge through debate, exploration, research, critical thinking and practical work. Our belief in interactive learning means we’re taking a pioneering lead when it comes to technology. As a new undergraduate, we’ll give you a free Samsung tablet, pre-loaded with your core textbooks. Our location in east London provides fantastic opportunities to gain hands-on experience in your chosen profession before you graduate. The University of East London is based in two superbly equipped campuses – in Stratford, close to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and in London Docklands, near Royal Albert Dock. Our area of east London is changing at an extraordinary speed, and we’re part of that dynamic process. We’ve invested £170 million in our facilities in the past decade to create a world-class learning environment.

Both of our campuses boast state-of-the art teaching facilities, including top-quality laboratories, superbly equipped computer suites and high-tech libraries, open 24/7 in term time. Our sports facilities are so amazing that top international athletes are choosing to study with us. Three of our undergraduates won six medals between them at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. One of them, Adam Gemili, was also crowned European 200 metres champion.

Our waterfront Student Village is located at our Docklands campus and is home to more than 1,200 undergraduates and postgraduates. Under the current arrangements, students are able to ‘study now and pay later’. It means you don’t have to pay any tuition fees up front and you don’t have to start paying the fees back until you’re earning a reasonable income. You can take out a Tuition Fee Loan from the Student Loans Company to cover tuition fees. This will be paid directly to the University and is available to all new UK/EU students. UK students may also be eligible for a Maintenance Loan to help cover their living costs.

Dr Tim Hall, Head of Global Studies at UEL, is leading one of our ‘London Scholars’ programmes that aims to create a Living Wage zone across the London Borough of Newham. Our undergraduate students are in touch with the ten biggest employers in the borough and are in discussion with them about best practice in implementing the Living Wage. Our students took part in a similar project in Whitehall in 2012, where four Government departments changed their wage structure to reflect the Living Wage.

Our staff have wide-ranging research interests, constantly keeping up-to-date with the latest issues, trends and new thinking in law and the legal profession. The Centre of Human Rights in Conflict focuses on a hot topic rarely out of the news: the complex and dynamic relationships between human rights and conflict. Human rights and international law in general are particular strengths of UEL and you’ll benefit from this knowledge with a compulsory human rights module, which we teach to all undergraduate students.

The first psychosocial studies degree course began at UEL in 1985. It’s the oldest, most established centre for the study of the subject in the UK. At UEL, we investigate the area of ‘social psychology’ by analysing the interaction of personal experience and social and cultural context, seeking new solutions to difficulties facing society today – conflict, racism, loneliness and violence.

Dr David W. Jones and Dr Chris Scanlon have been funded to organise an international collaboration of researchers that aims to reach a better understanding of the diagnosis of ‘antisocial personality disorder’, which is strongly associated with criminality. They’ll be considering these disorders in their social, cultural, historical and psychological contexts.
Professor Corinne Squire, who teaches the optional HIV in the World module, has recently written Living with HIV and ARVs: Three Letter Lives, which takes an international perspective on the diseases.

We also work to strengthen the evidence base for ‘relationship-based social work’. This places the client-practitioner relationship at the heart of practice.

In 2014, all of our second-year surveying and mapping sciences undergraduates went on industry work placements. Every one of them has now secured a full-time job when they graduate. Some were offered more than one job. It goes to show how highly our students are valued by industry – and how well we prepare them for the world of work. Our courses give you the fundamentals to pursue a wide range of careers, covering everything from land surveying and mapping to logistics and site planning.

Senior Lecturer Peter Lakin’s interests include building information modelling, which uses digital technology to model the physical characteristics of buildings and places. Peter has further interests in land and engineering surveying, and construction management.
