Beatson Pebble Appeal target in sight: final opportunity to support the capital campaign The Beatson Pebble Appeal team are delighted to announce that the campaign to raise funds to build the first translational research centre dedicated to cancer research in Scotland has almost reached its target. With just under £500,000 of the £10 million target to be raised, the team aim to have the remaining funds in place by the time the building is completed in autumn 2012. It is therefore the last chance to donate to the capital campaign and, for donations of £250 and over, to choose an inscription on the donor wall. The donor wall will be situated in the foyer of the new building and will recognise the generosity of our supporters to the capital campaign. To date, over 3,200 donations have been received. Campaign Chairman Professor Sir Michael Bond said: ‘The overwhelming response

from graduates, friends, trusts, foundations and the general public has been extremely heartening. In under five years we have raised a staggering £9.5 million, making it possible to build a cancer research centre in Glasgow which I have no doubt will have a major impact on cancer research in Glasgow, Scotland and far beyond. We are extremely grateful to our existing donors and I urge those who have not yet supported the campaign to help us raise that final £500,000.’ Professor Barry Gusterson is scientific adviser to the Beatson Pebble Appeal: ‘The completion of the translational research centre means that Glasgow will be host to cancer research facilities which are among the best in Europe. Cancer research stars are key to cancer cures and these individuals are attracted to places with the best environment for their research.

‘The new facilities in Glasgow complete a comprehensive cancer centre that will guarantee that we can continue to recruit the very best cancer scientists from all over the world and, in so doing, optimise the opportunity for groundbreaking cancer discoveries. It really is an exciting time to be working in cancer research in Glasgow.’ To make a donation please complete the form on page 7 or see www. beatsonpebbleappeal.org. The final deadline for donations to obtain an inscription on the donor wall is Friday, 29 June 2012. For further information call +44 (0)141 330 3000 or email office@beatsonpebbleappeal.org. Bequest establishes postgraduate scholarship The University has been the recipient of a £600,000 bequest from the estate of Miriam Mitchell, late wife of Dr (Charles) Angus Mitchell (PhD 1964). The funds have been used to establish an endowed postgraduate scholarship in her husband’s name in the School of Geographical & Earth Sciences.

Dr and Mrs Mitchell

Message from the Director

the late Dr and Mrs Mitchell for their most generous bequest. It costs a significant sum of money to train a PhD student and we are therefore extremely grateful for the bequest, which will enable us to provide such support for many students over the years.’

As a graduate in geology, Dr Mitchell maintained an interest in geology and, during his lifetime, he enjoyed geological expeditions in the remote Canadian wilderness, complete with polar bear confrontations and rescue missions. His life was later spent in the Gulf States, where he worked for Crescent Petrol, and more recently back in the Bath area where he and Miriam had settled.

Emma Fairley is the first recipient of the Angus Mitchell (PhD 1964) Bursary: ‘I have started my research under the supervision of Dr Tim Dempster, and I am overjoyed to have the opportunity for in-depth study of an area of geology which, as an undergraduate, held great interest for me. We hope that data gathered during this study will provide the first comprehensive account of how rare and economically valuable minerals behave in the Earth’s crust.’

Professor Maggie Cusack is head of the School of Geographical & Earth Sciences: ‘I would like to express my most sincere gratitude and that of the entire School to

Chancellor’s Fund giving – how you can help make a difference

Welcome to Giving to Glasgow. As reported in the last issue, our campaign to support the redevelopment of SCENE, the University’s world-class centre for ecology and the environmental sciences, is now in its final stage. Construction of the teaching facility is now under way and will be operational in summer 2013. Our campaign closing appeal has been very popular and we are keeping the donor wall open for a short while longer to allow supporters a final chance to be included. I am personally delighted to see the launch of the Scholarship in memory of Professor Hugh B Sutherland, one of our new suite of scholarships named after notable alumni. His contribution to the life and wellbeing of the University was immense. This covered his academic field of civil engineering, the development of the University Trust and also university sport. This helped him to create a legendary network of alumni and friends across the world and it seems very fitting that we can remember him in this way.

Cathy Bell Director, Development & Alumni Office 2

The Chancellor’s Fund was established in 1999 to allow alumni to donate gifts that can be directed to where the need is greatest, supporting student-centred projects which would otherwise fall outwith core funding. Almost 2,000 donors have given £1.2 million to the Fund since then and many diverse and interesting projects have been supported, including a diving programme for Marine Biology and Zoology students, providing an equine manikin to help train veterinary students in large animal rescue, and helping students to participate in once-in-a-lifetime sporting opportunities such as the Cycle 2 Sahara (pictured).

Your support is vital if we are to continue making such initiatives possible. Amanda McMillan (BAcc 1990) gives a regular gift: ‘Attending the University of Glasgow was a significant milestone in my life. I often reflect on the happy and challenging times that it presented and decided five years ago that a small monthly donation would be an appropriate way to mark my association with the University. I am proud of my small contribution and hope that I can continue to pledge throughout my working life.’ A gift to the Chancellor’s Fund will help students attending the University to have the opportunity to enjoy a rich and rewarding university experience. To make a gift please complete the form on page 7.

Glasgow receives scholarships boost The Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust (LRET) has awarded £281,000 to the University to fund scholarships for postgraduate Masters students in the College of Science & Engineering. This donation will fund either six international students or up to 17 UK/EU students each year for three years, beginning in the academic year 2012–13. The LRET is an independent charity working to achieve advances in transportation, science, engineering and technology education, training and research worldwide for the benefit of all. The scholarships will be available to students taking postgraduate programmes in automotive engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, geoinformation technology and cartography, science for international development and environmental statistics.

Professor John Chapman is head of the College of Science & Engineering: ‘We are delighted to receive this scholarship funding from the LRET and are very appreciative of the support they are providing to students. Scholarships such as these can make a huge difference for students.’ Michael Franklin, Director of the LRET, said: ‘By entering into this scholarship scheme with the University of Glasgow, the LRET hopes that it will attract the highest achieving students to pursue Masters programmes in science and engineering, which will ultimately benefit all of us.’ For further information on making a donation to the Scholarships Fund, please contact David Miller on +44 (0)141 330 1867 or email: david.a.miller@glasgow. ac.uk.

Alumni supporting students The School of Veterinary Medicine has an enviable history of its alumni supporting vet students. One example is Lewis Forbes, who graduated from Glasgow Vet College in 1944. Lewis chose to gift scholarships enabling students to fulfil their ambition to study veterinary medicine.

‘In the future I hope to be able to assist students in circumstances similar to my own as Lewis Forbes has done for me.’ As the Vet School celebrates its 150th anniversary, support, in the form of scholarships for both undergraduate and postgraduate study, remains a priority. Professor Ewan Cameron, head of the School of Veterinary Medicine, told us, ‘Undergraduate scholarships are invaluable in attracting the best students, who might otherwise not be able to pursue veterinary medicine.

The University has launched a series of scholarships named after notable alumni across its four colleges. As many regular readers of Giving to Glasgow will be aware, the Scholarships Fund was launched in 2007 and has received in excess of £4 million in donations to date. Following on from this success, these new scholarships will enable the University to compete for the best postgraduate students internationally and to provide our students with the opportunity to study overseas. Funding a full scholarship can be out of reach for many. The new scholarships will offer our alumni and friends the opportunity to support a subject area with a small regular gift and, in line with our previous campaigns, all donations over £250 will attract a naming opportunity.

Euan McKenzie is a beneficiary of the Lewis Forbes Scholarship. Euan is in his third year of study and, unlike many of his peers, is 29 years old and travels every day from his home in Dumfriesshire to study at Glasgow Vet School. Euan told us what this support means to him: ‘This Scholarship has allowed me to continue my clinical years without having to get a weekend job and gives me vital time to study and spend time with my family. It also has reduced the future debt I will have to pay back when qualified.

New scholarships launched

One example of the new scholarships will be dear to many of our Civil Engineering alumni as we launch an appeal to establish a postgraduate scholarship in memory of the late Professor Hugh B Sutherland, who died in December 2011. Lewis Forbes Scholarship beneficiary Euan McKenzie

‘We are also keen to attract support for postgraduate scholarships that are vital in helping us develop knowledge in key areas of veterinary medicine; enable us to compete for the best students from around the world; and develop academic leadership in veterinary medicine. The success of the Vet School is testament to the support we have received from our graduates over the years and we look forward to their continuing support as we celebrate our successes and achievements in this special year.’ For further information on the Vet Fund, contact Sarah Hunter on +44 (0)141 330 7145 or email sarah.hunter@glasgow.ac.uk.

Hugh (pictured above) became the University’s first Cormack Professor of Civil Engineering from 1966 until his retirement in 1986 and an internationally renowned authority on soil mechanics. Thereafter he maintained his close relationship with Glasgow as a Director of the University Trust, receiving an honorary doctorate for his contribution to University life in 1991. If you would like to make a contribution to the Professor Hugh B Sutherland Scholarship please complete the form on page 7. For information about the scholarships that can be supported in your subject area, please see www. glasgow.ac.uk/givingtoglasgow. 3

Funding research into childhood leukaemia

2012 events: past and forthcoming Zip Slide Our annual charity Zip Slide took place on 24 and 25 March. Sixty brave challengers zipped across the River Clyde on a high wire to raise funds for the Beatson Pebble Appeal and the Paul O’Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre. Participants raised a fantastic £13,500. If this inspires you to take part, we will be organising a second Zip Slide on Saturday, 15 September and entries are now open.

The Howat Foundation has very generously contributed £500,000 towards new research into childhood leukaemia at the Paul O’Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre at Gartnavel.

Cycle Glasgow The University is organising its tenth sponsored cycle on Sunday, 19 August 2012, continuing to raise essential funds for the Paul O’Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre.

Professor Tessa Holyoake, Director of the Paul O’Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre, said: ‘We are extremely grateful to receive funding from the Howat Foundation to establish a new area of translational research into childhood leukaemia and are delighted that Dr Karen Keeshan has been appointed to lead this work.

This event is a fun family cycle designed for riders of all ages and abilities. Entrants can choose to cycle 13 or 26 miles, starting and finishing in Kelvingrove Park. To date, over 3,800 participants have raised more than £340,000 through our sponsored cycles. This money supported the capital build and has provided essential infrastructure and equipment needed to run the centre to allow world-class leukaemia research to take place.

‘In Glasgow there has been a long history of exceptionally strong clinical research and clinical management of childhood leukaemia, led by Dr Brenda Gibson. Over the last few years we have set our sights on extending this excellent clinical work to more basic laboratory science that, in time, is expected to bring new approaches for the treatment of children with leukaemia. The Howat Foundation post is integral to this development and we all look forward to welcoming Dr Karen Keeshan to Glasgow.’

Cycle Glasgow 2012 is on Sunday, 19 August

We are also looking for volunteers to help steward the route. For more information, please contact Fiona Donnelly, email: fiona.donnelly@glasgow.ac.uk. To register for the event, please see: www.glasgow.ac.uk/cycleglasgow. Firewalk Following the huge success of last year’s event, the University is organising another Firewalk for those of you who are looking for a unique challenge. The event will take place on Saturday, 20 October and the aim is to raise funds for the Beatson Pebble Appeal and its goal to build the Beatson Translational Research Centre in Glasgow. The Firewalk will take place on campus and is organised by the University and Blaze, a specialist company. Last year’s event raised £18,000 for the Beatson Pebble Appeal and our firewalkers and spectators shared an incredible and thrilling experience. Ladies’ Lunch A Ladies’ Lunch will be held on Friday, 7 September at Oran Mor in Glasgow to raise funds for the Paul O’Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre. The host for the event will be awardwinning author Denise Mina. Tickets cost £35 and include fizz on arrival, a two-course lunch and entertainment. For more information, please contact the events team by email: daoevents@glasgow.ac.uk or by telephone: +44 (0)141 330 3593.

Helping to train the next generation of doctors Over the past four years the Medical Education Fund has provided the best equipment for our medical students thanks to the support of our donors. Alumni year groups have been particularly keen to support this theme of the Medical Fund to mark their reunion events. This has resulted in over 500 gifts to the Medical Education Fund, raising £55,000 for equipment and supporting students with their studies. We hope to build on this support and continue to provide a first-class education to train the next generation of doctors.

Dr Lynn Murray and Mrs Ann Graham

Think Pink Scotland reach £370,000 In 2006 a group of friends formed Think Pink Scotland to raise funds for breast cancer research in the west of Scotland. They had been inspired to do so following the shock diagnosis of two friends and neighbours – Lynn Murray and Ann Graham. Since then, Think Pink Scotland have organised a number of fundraising events and activities including an annual ball, ceilidhs, fashion shows and sponsored walks. They started out with an ambitious target of raising £10,000 and have since generated an outstanding £370,000. These funds have been used to fund equipment at the Western Infirmary and their current goal is to raise funds for a laboratory in the new Beatson Translational Research Centre at Garscube.

The most recent event was a lavish fundraising ball at Mar Hall in Bishopton. More than 250 guests attended and over £20,000 was raised on the night. Mar Hall have selected Think Pink Scotland as their charity of the year 2012 and it is hoped there will be a selection of events later in the year, including a golf day and a spa day. Dr Lynn Murray, co-founder of Think Pink Scotland, said: ‘I have been overwhelmed by the support we have received since we started fundraising back in 2006. I am really pleased to make a small contribution in the fight against cancer. As a cancer survivor myself I look forward to a time when every patient can be successfully treated.’

In 2007 the Medical Education Fund provided two prosthetics for students’ self-study. In 2011 increased alumni support meant we were able to purchase more prosthetics and equipment for the clinical skills suite to enhance the teaching environment. We have also established an annual £5,000 fund to support students wishing to attend conferences and other training opportunities, which has been a great success. Last year, 12 students attended the UK Medical Students’ Association conference and three students had their abstracts accepted for presentation at conferences in Europe. The Medical School also received a request from a fifth-year student who was presenting at conferences in Bournemouth, Torquay and Colorado and needed significant help with travel and accommodation. Professor Anna Dominiczak, head of the College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences, commented: ‘Not only do the students feel extremely honoured to be representing the University at conferences, it also builds their confidence and makes them more competitive in the jobs market.’ For more information on the Medical Fund see www.glasgow.ac.uk/ givingtoglasgow/medicalfund or call Laura Morton on +44 (0)141 330 3878.

Gift Aid it Gift Aid is a UK government tax scheme. As an exempt charity, the University of Glasgow/University of Glasgow Trust (The University) can reclaim basic rate tax on qualifying donations from UK taxpayers. This applies to donations you have made in the last four years and from the date of this declaration, until you notify us otherwise. To enable the Univeristy to reclaim Gift Aid, please sign and date the Gift Aid declaration below. I would like the University to treat all qualifying donations as Gift Aid donations. I confirm I have paid or will pay an amount of Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax for each tax year (6 April to 5 April) that is at least equal to the amount of tax that all charities or Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs) that I donate to will reclaim on my gifts for that tax year. I understand that other taxes such as VAT and Council Tax do not qualify. I understand the University will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I have given in the last four years and from the date of this declaration until I notify you otherwise. Please notify the University if you: Want to cancel this declaration / Change your name or home address / No longer pay sufficient tax on your income and/or capital gains.
