American support to study Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns Two major donations in support of the University’s Centre for Robert Burns Studies have been received by the American Alumni of Glasgow University (AAGU), including a matched gift from The Cola-Cola Foundation. The Centre for Robert Burns Studies was established in 2007 and its mission is the development of research, scholarship and teaching in the area of Robert Burns, his cultural period and related literature. The Susan and Frank Shaw Fund at the centre will be used to foster links with other institutions working in the area of Robert Burns, to encourage Robert Burns studies through publications and events, and support academic and student exchanges both within the UK and globally. The first donation was made by Frank and Susan Shaw, who then facilitated the matched gift from The Coca-Cola Foundation. Robert Burns was the first person ever to appear on a Coca-Cola bottle. In 2005 the Scottish poet featured on approximately one million limited edition bottles.
Frank Shaw, the past president of the St Andrew’s Society of Atlanta, and his wife Susan are enthusiastic supporters of all things Scottish and in particular of the life and works of Robert Burns. Frank is a member of the University’s Centre for Robert Burns Studies Business Board and works closely with codirectors Professor Gerard Carruthers and Dr Kirsteen McCue. Susan, a native Atlantan, retired in 2002 from The Coca-Cola Company as Corporate Secretary after 35 years. Mr and Mrs Shaw feel that the centre, and in particular Professor Carruthers, has become a big part of their lives: ‘We fell in love with the University rather quickly because of the people we met over the years in Columbia, South Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia and, of course, at the Robert Burns conferences in Glasgow.
‘We were made to feel welcome from the first day we met the centre’s various representatives, and it became apparent to us that Glasgow would become the fifth educational institution we have either endowed or gifted to. We look forward to working together for many years to come.’ Professor Carruthers said, ‘This support means a great deal to us, especially as Frank and Susan are such great friends and have been a key influence on our plans since the centre started. The fund will contribute to some of our exciting events and projects in the coming year.’ • For further information about supporting Glasgow from the US, or about the AAGU and matched giving see www.glasgow.ac.uk/givefromtheUSA.

Message from the Director This edition of Giving to Glasgow clearly shows we are already beginning to see the generosity of our graduates towards the new Postgraduate Scholarship Funds. Gifts to these funds support postgraduate scholarships across campus and allow donors to choose an area of particular personal interest to them. That interest may be in one of our excellent research areas, such as Robert Burns studies, or in a person held in affection by the donor, as we see with the Hugh Sutherland Fund which directly assists in Hugh’s field of civil engineering. As our fundraising develops to reflect the new college structure, it is heartening to see such progress and support for the Postgraduate Scholarship Funds as we have seen with the highly successful Talent Scholarship scheme, also covered in this edition. It is great to be able to report that the support for our scholarships is gathering the same momentum as we have seen over the years with our capital projects. For this support the University community is most grateful.

The next chapter for Theatre, Film & Television Studies A new postgraduate scholarship fund in Theatre, Film & Television Studies is being launched as part of our new College Scholarships scheme, designed to support our next generation of postgraduate students with £5,000 scholarships for tuition fees. The launch of the fund coincides with the renovation of the Gilmorehill Building, which has been home to Theatre, Film & Television Studies since 1997 when Richard Wilson, famed actor and then Rector of the University, opened the Centre for Theatre, Film & Television Studies at Glasgow. It will also continue the tradition of philanthropic support for Arts at Glasgow, evident in such initiatives as the Alasdair Cameron Scholarship in Theatre Studies. The Alasdair Cameron Scholarship was established to celebrate the life and work of Dr Alasdair Cameron, a Theatre Studies alumnus and Senior Lecturer in the Department, who died suddenly in 1994. It offers financial support each year to a senior Theatre Studies student or recent graduate to create a piece of performance art. Dr Peter Urbach, a key supporter of the scholarship, said: ‘I am happy to be amongst those who are able to give scholars the opportunity to practise the skills they have learned and present their creative work
to an audience, and, we hope, to provide a first step to a successful career.’ This new postgraduate scholarship fund is the next chapter in Theatre, Film & Television Studies at Glasgow, allowing us to support the future of the subject with the best new research talent as well as helping excellent students take the next steps in their academic careers. • If you would like more information about supporting Theatre, Film & Television Studies at the University and the relaunch of the Gilmorehill Building, please contact Bicola Barratt-Crane on Bicola.Barratt-Crane@glasgow.ac.uk or +44 (0)141 330 7148.
Law: 300 years on
Remembering Hugh Sutherland
This year the School of Law is celebrating the 300th anniversary of the Regius Chair of Law at the University of Glasgow.
In December 2011, the University was sad to announce the death of Professor Hugh Sutherland, former Cormack Professor of Civil Engineering, and one of the most popular faces around campus. Hugh’s legendary affinity with the University was founded during his time as a lecturer and after his retirement from teaching when he became the first Director of the University Trust. Hugh dedicated almost 50 years of his life to the University.
The Chair of Law is one of 13 Regius Professorships at Glasgow – positions created by the monarchy at the UK’s ancient universities – and was founded in December 1713 with an endowment from Queen Anne. The first holder, William Forbes, was appointed in 1714. It has been held since by a long list of distinguished legal scholars, including John Millar, William Gloag, Andrew Dewar Gibb MBE QC, David Walker CBE QC, Joseph Thomson and most recently James Chalmers. To celebrate the Tercentenary anniversary of this historic Chair, the School of Law is hosting a number of events for friends and alumni, including a drinks reception in London in June and a formal alumni dinner in September.
To continue his legacy, the University has set up the Hugh B Sutherland Postgraduate Scholarship in Civil Engineering. This fund has been supported by a generous donation from Hugh’s family and friends, and in December 2012 the University launched a fundraising appeal to those who would have known Hugh, including former students and colleagues.
If you would like to register your interest in attending these events or would like more information about supporting Law at the University of Glasgow, please contact Bicola Barratt-Crane on Bicola.Barratt-Crane@ glasgow.ac.uk or +44 (0)141 330 7148.
We have had a fantastic response to the appeal, and thanks to the generosity of our supporters we have received 41 gifts to the scholarship fund, amounting to over £44,000. These funds will allow the University to continue to attract and support

the most talented students from the UK and around the world. Thanks to the support of our donors, we hope to award our first Professor Hugh B Sutherland Postgraduate Scholarship in the 2013–14 academic year. • If you would like to support this great cause, or find out more, please contact Richard McConnell at richard.mcconnell@glasgow.ac.uk, or +44 (0)141 330 4302.
Celebrating Glasgow’s talent Recipients of this year’s Talent Scholarships were congratulated by award-winning crime writer Louise Welsh (pictured) and Vice-Principal for Learning & Teaching Professor Frank Coton, at an awards ceremony held in February. The annual ceremony marks the achievement of the students who have shown outstanding academic merit in being selected for their scholarship and enables donors and supporters to meet with the students. Louise Welsh highlighted the importance of the Talent Scholarship Scheme: ‘I was the first to go to University in my extended family and it opened up a whole new world for me. I would like to thank our alumni and donors for contributing to the next generation and changing lives. If there’s one thing that enables us to throw off restrictions, to throw off shackles, it’s access to education.’
For Business & Management student Greg Campbell, receiving the Talent Scholarship enabled him to concentrate on his studies rather than worry about his finances. ‘I was the first person in my entire family to go to University, so the scholarship has given me the independence to pursue a University career.’ The Talent Scholarship Scheme, established in 2007, enables academically outstanding students to attend University who might otherwise be prevented through financial pressures. Approximately 50 scholarships are awarded annually and there are currently 220 Talent Scholars across all four colleges within the University.
Opening ‘a world of opportunity’ The family of successful actuary Alexander Shedden has endowed a new Talent & Travel Scholarship in his memory. From the Battlefield area of Glasgow, Alexander had never considered attending University until winning an annual competition for bursary support. Alexander was encouraged to enrol and graduated with a first-class Honours degree in Maths and Natural Philosophy in 1948.

John Shedden said of his father: ‘He had never considered the possibility of going to university because he felt it was not an option for someone from his background. Eventually however, having taken advice, he decided to do maths and science. This led to my father having a successful and rewarding career rising through the ranks of his profession to become Deputy Chief Executive at Standard Life and President of the Faculty of Actuaries. ‘He would never have been able to go to university without the benefit of the bursaries he received and this education opened up a world of opportunity. My family are therefore pleased to endow this talent scholarship in his name in the hope that it will help to open up a similar world of opportunity to young people who might otherwise find it difficult to fund a university education.’ • If you would like to support the Talent Scholarship Scheme please contact Kate Richardson at kate.richardson@glasgow.ac.uk or +44 (0)141 330 1867.

Calling all alumni Our alumni community is a hugely valued part of the life of the University and we like to keep in touch with as many of our alumni as possible. One way we do this is through our regular telephone campaigns. These campaigns are a great opportunity for alumni to support the fantastic initiatives taking place at Glasgow, while sharing their memories of the University and the city. Over the years the University has benefited enormously from the generosity of its graduates and friends, and since 2003 over £1 million has been pledged as a result of receiving a phone call from one of our student callers. This crucial support helps keep Glasgow at the forefront of education as a worldwide centre of excellence, offering a fantastic student experience, cutting-edge facilities, and opportunities to all through scholarships. University of Glasgow graduate Andrew McKenzie (BSc Physics, 1996) chose to donate to the University after receiving a call through the telephone campaign: ‘I had always wanted to give back to one of my universities and as I am now in a financial position to do so the phone call prompted me to do something about it. The discussion about what the funds support made it clear to me that giving someone access to higher education who otherwise couldn’t afford it was the best option.’
speak to and share my post-University life with a present student at the University. The call put me back in touch with all my lovely memories and the amazing life I lived while in Glasgow.’
Postgraduate Law student Owen Wilton (pictured above), has been part of the Telephone Campaign since he joined the University in 2011. We asked Owen, now a campaign supervisor, about his experience.
Our calling team consists of 26 students, all of whom discuss current developments at the University, update our alumni on relevant information and answer any of the questions our alumni might have.
Do you enjoy working as part of the telephone campaign? It’s been a wonderful place to work, both because of the great student team in the call room, and all the conversations I’ve had with the Glasgow alumni.
Graduate Saskia Birlenbach (MA Social Sciences, 2005) said of her call: ‘I really enjoyed this campaign a lot! I think it is a really great idea and a great way to keep in touch with Glasgow. It’s been a pleasure to
Why do you think it’s a good way to keep in touch with our alumni? It’s very personal and direct, and it’s a two-way communication: we are able

an estate is left to charity, a reduced rate of inheritance tax of 36% will be applied.
A gift in your will can benefit a specific area of research or a school, support a scholarship or chair, fund a piece of equipment or be unrestricted, allowing us to direct it to where the need is greatest. Gifts of all sizes are extremely valuable and will make a lasting contribution to our work.
Many of our enquiries about giving a bequest gift are made during our telephone campaigns and we are always delighted to answer any legacy-related questions or send further information, perhaps about supporting specific areas of the University or about naming a donation to allow a donor or loved one to be remembered in perpetuity.
Did you know that making a charitable gift in your will could also reduce your inheritance tax liability? Gifts left to charities like the University are tax exempt and where 10% of

to hear what our graduates think, what they’ve experienced, and how they would like to help. Of course, not everyone is in a position to donate, and that’s perfectly understandable. Lots of alumni look forward to telling their stories and we really enjoy hearing them – it’s why we signed up! Our callers can say very honestly that the campaign isn’t all about raising money. Best phone call to date? Can I pick two? The first graduate was very senior in a global company and not only did he want to make a generous regular gift but also wanted to know how he could get involved with persuading others to do the same. The second was a recent graduate who had just started a dream job but not one that was very well paid. He still chose to give a one-off donation to a scholarship fund supporting students in his old discipline, showing how much he obviously still cared about it. Both alumni were in very different circumstances but showed exactly the same spirit. What’s your favourite cause to fundraise for and why? Fundraising is hugely important. Our fundraising campaigns enable us to do things we wouldn’t normally be able to do. A great example is the Beatson Pebble Appeal, which has really struck a chord with our graduates and the result is something pretty extraordinary. However, I always make the case for the scholarship funds; I don’t think there are many areas that offer a greater return on investment than education. • Our office exists to serve our University of Glasgow alumni, and we are always pleased to hear from you. If you would like more information on the Development & Alumni Office or the telephone campaign itself, please visit our website at www.glasgow.ac.uk/alumni.
Nurturing our vets of the future Thanks to our donors, the James Herriot Scholarship Fund now stands at over £30,000. Gifts will enable the Vet School to award scholarships to excellent veterinary students who, through financial constraints, may otherwise not be able to study at Glasgow. These scholarships will be crucial in providing opportunity to the most promising individuals from home and around the world, helping to develop the clinical academic leaders of the future and to train a new generation equipped to tackle future global challenges in animal health and welfare. The University was delighted to receive support from Laura Henderson who graduated from Glasgow Vet School in 2008. Laura thoroughly enjoyed her time at University: ‘The best thing about being at Glasgow was being allowed to be me, not what other people wanted me to be.’
Ashley McGuigan has been taking part in Cycle Glasgow as one of Team McGuigan’s enthusiastic cyclists for the last ten years. Ashley, her family and friends decided to get involved with the event after her father, John, was treated at the Paul O’Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre in Glasgow.
the Vet School that her father had told her was so close to his heart.
Laura told us why she chose to support the University in this way: ‘I did it because I still feel a part of the University and I wanted to give something back.’
Rosie told us why she and her brother Jim are delighted that the Fund is named after their father: ‘Through his writing our father gave great prominence to, and enhanced the image of, the veterinary profession that continues today. I am certain he would have approved of his name being used to support and train our new generation of veterinary students.’

Supporting breakthrough research
Young scientists are essential to the future success of the teaching and research programmes within the College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences. The Medical Fund was set up to support a huge variety of important research projects, including Dr Christina Halsey’s research into childhood leukaemia. One of the major challenges in childhood leukaemia is how best to prevent and treat disease spreading to the brain. Christina and her colleagues are using a combination of samples direct from patients and cells grown in the laboratory to investigate the
Get active for Glasgow
Each year, Ashley begins her training by getting on her bike at weekends and increasing the distance over a few months: ‘Build up your training gradually. It could be that you haven’t cycled for a while. If that’s the case, you need to ease into it and more importantly have fun! It gives me a goal to work towards and raises money for a charity close to my heart.’ Cycle Glasgow is a fun, family cycle ride aimed at riders of all abilities. To date we have raised over £350,000 through our 13 or 26 mile sponsored cycles, which has been integral to the opening of the Paul O’Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre. Cycle Glasgow will take place this year on Sunday, 18 August. For more information on the event or to volunteer, please visit www.glasgow.ac.uk/cycleglasgow or phone +44 (0)141 330 3593.
ways leukaemic cells navigate around the body and to see if altering this navigation system can redirect cells away from the brain. She hopes their research findings will allow them to design more targeted and effective therapy in the future. If you would like to help support this or other research programmes being carried out by our young scientists, you can do so through the Medical Fund.
