About the University of Hartford
The University of Hartford provides a distinctive educational experience across seven schools and colleges for one of the most diverse student bodies in New England, comprising approximately 4,000 undergraduate and 1,800 graduate students from 48 states and 45 countries. The University’s faculty are attracted by the opportunity to mentor, challenge, and support students as they pursue degrees in more than 100 programs in the arts, humanities, sciences, business, engineering, technology, architecture, education, and health professions.
The University’s charter was signed in 957, but its roots go back to 877 when one of the three founding schools, the Hartford Art School, opened. With encouragement from local community and business leaders, the Hartford Art School came together with the Hartt School of Music (now The Hartt School) and Hillyer College in 957 on a 50-acre stretch of farmland on Bloomfield Avenue known as the Gabriel farm, the last farm in Hartford. In the ensuing 66 years, the campus has more than doubled in physical size and the University has matured in ways that its founders may not have dared to imagine.
The University Mace
Honorary Degrees
The tradition of bestowing honorary degrees can be traced back to universities in Europe during the Middle Ages, becoming commonplace at institutions of higher learning across the globe long before the University of Hartford was chartered in 1957. Through the years, the University of Hartford has awarded honorary degrees to distinguished scholars, artists, musicians, leaders, and dignitaries. Past recipients include Dizzy Gillespie, Arthur Miller, Benny Goodman, Theodor “Dr. Seuss”
Geisel, George Burns, Ann Landers, Arthur Ashe, Carl Sagan, Steve Allen, Jeffrey Bezos, Charles Gibson, Edward Albee, Wolf Blitzer, and Joe Torre.
The University Mace precedes the president and board of regents in academic processions. Maces originated as weapons but in modern times have become symbols of authority. The University Mace (shown at left) is 41 inches long and is crowned by a sterling silver globe, engraved with the name of the University and bearing its seal in 24-karat gold. The poplar shaft bears sterling silver bands on which are engraved the names and dates of service of the University’s presidents, and the names and founding dates of the three institutions that came together to form the University in 1957.
The base is made of sterling silver and bears the name of the donor, the late Charles Condon, former University secretary and general counsel, who donated the mace in 1987 on the University’s 30th anniversary.

Graduating students and faculty wear academic regalia tracing back to traditions at some of the world’s oldest colleges and universities. This academic garb adds to the colorful pageantry of the Commencement ceremony, and also indicates the wearer’s academic discipline and, in the case of faculty, the institution that granted the degree. Colors associated with different disciplines are listed below.

AWARDS AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Gregory S. Woodward President University of Hartford
Gregory S. Woodward, who became the University of Hartford’s sixth president in July 2017, recently announced that he will retire this summer. During his tenure, UHart has launched 16 new and in-demand academic programs; greatly increased online offerings; and opened the 60,000-square-foot Francis X. and Nancy Hursey Center for Advanced Engineering and Health Professions.
Among the many ways that Woodward has enhanced campus, one that stands out is his steadfast commitment to student success. He orchestrated a holistic and centralized approach to student services—resulting in the 2019 opening of a new Center for Student Success at the heart of campus—that contributed to record increases in retention rates the very first year, including a 16 percent increase for students of color.
A composer, musician, athlete, and scholar, Woodward has spent nearly four decades working in almost every conceivable role in higher education. From 2012 to the end of the 2016–17 academic year, he served as president of Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he strengthened campus-wide engagement and collaboration, thereby fostering a college culture that values collegiality and a spirit of hospitality toward others.
Woodward moved to Carthage from Ithaca College (New York), where he led one of the premier undergraduate music conservatories in the country as dean of the School of Music, served as interim provost–vice president for academic affairs, and created and served as the inaugural dean of the Division of Graduate and Professional Studies.
While earning his Doctor of Musical Arts from Cornell University, Woodward was a student of Pulitzer Prize-winning Czech composer Karel Husa. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut and master’s degree from Ithaca College, having also studied composition with Donald Martino, Steven Stucky, and Charles Whittenberg.
Woodward is a current member of the New England Board of Higher Education.
He was married to Penelope Woodward, a lifelong and beloved music educator, for 34 years. Penny made significant contributions to advancing the research and treatment of leptomeningeal carcinomatosis before her passing in 2021. Woodward and their three adult children proudly carry her legacy.
David A. Gordon ’75 Chair University of Hartford Board of Regents
David A. Gordon has served on the University of Hartford’s Board of Regents since 2008, becoming a vice chair of the Board in 2017 and the chair in 2018. He is completing his five-year term as board chair this month. Gordon is an alumnus of UHart, having received his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions. He also holds a master’s degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Gordon’s contributions to the University have extended beyond his role as a regent. He has served as the chair of the Board of Visitors of the Barney School of Business as well as the chair of the Board of Visitors of the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions.
His professional career has included roles in public education, information technology, executive leadership, and consulting. Upon graduating from UHart, Gordon taught eighth-grade mathematics in Bethel, Connecticut. His career then took him into business—first at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in information technology, and then at Cigna Corporation, where he held positions in information technology, national accounts management, e-commerce, and product development.
Gordon also held the positions of president of Trilog Corporation and president of Choicelinx Corporation, both Cigna subsidiaries. Later in his career, he joined the executive team of ConnectiCare as the senior vice president of strategy and product innovation. Gordon is currently a strategy and business development consultant working with early-stage companies.
He is married to Danuta Syp Gordon ’15, an accomplished artist, vice president of the Hartford Art School Endowment, Inc., and an alumna of the Hartford Art School. They have two adult children and four grandchildren.

Frank Hursey A’73, ’77 Doctor of Commercial Science
As an engineer, inventor, and business developer, has made a positive impact on the lives of many people.
A native of South Carolina, Hursey moved to Connecticut at the age of 19 to find a career and was offered a job with Pratt & Whitney, where he helped develop a fuel cell to provide onboard electricity and water to the Apollo astronauts. He also worked for a time in the respiratory therapy department at Hartford Hospital. These experiences compelled him to pursue an engineering degree by attending night classes at UHart’s College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture. He later earned a master’s degree in business management from Rens selaer Polytechnic Institute.
With an impulse as far back as boyhood to run his own business, in 1987, Hursey founded On Site Gas Systems, based in Newington, Conn., to manufacture portable oxygen and nitrogen generators, known as POGS, for industrial and military use, particularly in remote locations. When the COVID-19 pandemic was at its height, Hursey’s company built POGS for many of the temporary medical centers erected in cities nationwide to better deal with the dire situation.
In addition, Hursey discovered that a mineral, zeolite, synthetically produced, has hemostatic properties. Along with a partner, Bart Gullong, the product, QUIKCLOT, was brought to the attention of the United States Marine Corps. This impressive part of Hursey’s personal and professional journey—and what followed—is documented in a soon-to-bereleased book by Charles Barber titled In the Blood: How Two Outsiders Solved a Centuries-Old Medical Mystery and Took on the U.S. Army.
A distinguished alumnus of the University of Hartford, Hursey is an outstanding example of the possibilities that endure when personal motivation and a strong work ethic are combined with an exemplary academic background.

DOCTOR OF COMMERCIAL SCIENCE
Alecsander Boyd
’23
Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Barney School of Business
Agnes and Cornelious Barrett Endowed Scholarship
This award is given annually to an exemplary graduating senior based on academic excellence and community service either within campus or for a town or organization in Greater Hartford.
Victoria Rozario had long held the belief that fields such as criminal justice lack the diversity that helps our country build on its role as an effective and vibrant mosaic. That’s why she decided to focus on criminal justice, sociology, and paralegal studies at the University of Hartford. With a passion for assisting people in need, and a personal goal to one day help overhaul the criminal justice system to be more equitable, she is confident that her studies at the University have positioned her well for the professional prospects she envisions taking on for herself.
As part of her mission to make the most of her academic career, Rozario began applying for—and attaining—valuable and career-appropriate internships when she was in her first year at the University. These included positions with the Connecticut General Assembly, Senator Patricia Billie Miller, Town Councilor Carol. A. Blanks, and the Connecticut Attorneys Title Insurance Company. She says that among the many skills she developed at these varied internships are networking, independent initiative, quick thinking, and multitasking.
Taking risks and self-advocating are two additional lessons Rozario says were nurtured at UHart. All told, her hard work, motivation, and dedication paid off, for she has consistently been on the Dean’s List and the President’s List. She is also active with The Women’s Advancement Initiative’s LEAD program, is president of the Asian Students Association, and is involved in several other campus organizations. In addition, Rozario has been working diligently on her thesis, titled “Women’s Advancement in South Asia.”
“Victoria Rozario is an incredibly hard worker who is engaged in numerous student and community activities, and she consistently produces academic work of the highest level,” says Amanda Freeman, assistant professor of sociology and criminal justice. “She is precisely the kind of student our University wants to encourage, because it is clear that she will accomplish great things in all her future endeavors.”
Marion A. Bills Memorial Scholarship
Awarded biannually to a deserving and qualifying student who wishes to attend a graduate program at a top university in Great Britain. Boyd will attend Imperial College London to study in its MSc Economics & Strategy for Business program.
Alecsander Boyd, who is majoring both in business analytics and managerial economics, decided upon his academic course and professional goals based on a passion for understanding the complex role of world economics, and for wanting to help others understand it so that it can be used wisely and to good effect. This awareness developed from Boyd’s deep consideration of the world and its many transformations, natural and otherwise. Boyd truly takes the state of the world to heart, weighs its ups and downs and challenges and possibilities, and tries to come to an understanding of how it affects our lives, individually and as a society.
Certainly, that also helped him decide on a pathway to his own professional future.
Like the world he studies so diligently, Boyd is always on the move, and he has been that way since first coming to UHart. In addition to his studies, he has interned at many organizations, including a firm called CarpeData, for which he was a financial analyst; an insurance technology company in California; an organization called West Asset management, where he was an investment operations data manager; and at The Hartford Steam Boiler, where he assisted in its intelligence and analysis divisions.
On campus, he founded and is co-president of the Barney School’s first ever student-initiated club, The Q² Project. Q² stands for quantitative and qualitative, and the club is designed to let students interested in research work on projects of their own design.
After graduation, Boyd hopes to work toward a master’s degree in data or software science and engineering, and to then establish his own entrepreneurial business.
“Alec combines the quantitative rigor and data-driven approach of economics and econometrics with his keen interest in psychology,” says Ben Brewer, assistant professor of economics at the Barney School of Business. “He is a motivated student with a strong ability to connect his intuition about the real world to some of the more difficult economic theories and concepts. It is quite clear that he will be very successful.”

Victoria Rozario ’23 Bachelor of Arts, Criminal Justice College of Arts and Sciences
Omario Ricketts ’23 Bachelor of Science, Biology College of Arts and Sciences
Belle K. Ribicoff Prize
Awarded annually to an exemplary graduating senior who has demonstrated academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, originality of thought, and a commitment to extracurricular activities and community service.
Even as a student at the University of Hartford, Omario Ricketts has the distinction of being a sought-after teacher and leader. As a laboratory instructor, a coach for general and organic chemistry, and a student ambassador, he is often singled out as a true innovator. These roles had been suggested by his mentors at the school, and once Ricketts accepted each new responsibility, he proved to be exceedingly well-organized and effective in meeting every challenge.
A pre-med student with an interest in medical research, Ricketts is earning a bachelor of science degree in biology. His time at the University mixed academic classroom work with laboratory experiments from microbiology to genetics, which proved to him that he was headed in the right vocational direction.
In conjunction with mentors and professors, Ricketts worked on such projects as an exploration of a human pathogen called Staphylococcus aureus as it affected the student population, and an examination into the effects of climate change on the prevalence of a bacterium in oysters called vibrio. This particular project also serves as his senior honors thesis.
Due to the complex and consequential nature of his work as a scholar, researcher, and assistant, Ricketts finds himself engaged in activities somewhat beyond the scope of many others in his peer group, such as speaking in front of regional medical research conferences and authoring serious scientific manuscripts. A regular on UHart’s Dean’s List and President’s List, he has recorded a 4.0 grade point average.
“Omario is always prepared, his lab reports are well written, and he is always willing to help his fellow students,” says Adam C. Silver, associate professor in the Department of Biology. In addition to excelling as an undergraduate, a researcher, instructor, and even a student recruiter, Ricketts also held leadership positions in the Student Government Association and as president of the Pre-Med Club. “Plus, he has become a sought-after instructor,” Silver adds.

STUDENT AWARDS
Humphrey R. Tonkin Award
Bin Zhu has been with the University for 14 years, seven as an associate professor and two as a fully tenured professor of biology. Throughout his academic residency, he has built a reputation as an outstanding researcher, highly regarded author of scientific papers, and mentor of exceptional enthusiasm and commitment.
Zhu’s focus is on aquatic species and water quality, with an emphasis on invasive species such as the European frogbit, which poses an ecological threat in the United States and Canada.
One particular attribute respected by students past and present is Zhu’s eagerness to involve undergraduates in his research. Dozens have participated in his environmental projects. Some analyze samples while others actually don rubber boots to collect those samples in biodiverse waterways.
Zhu’s route to UHart began in China, where he received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in ecology from Nanjing University. He went on to earn a PhD from Syracuse University, then took on postdoctoral assignments at Cornell University and the Finger Lakes Institute at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
This broad range of experience sparked an active and ongoing role in scientific writing. Zhu’s work—which to date includes chapters in four books and almost two dozen articles in respected journals—have added important information to the available literature in his field. He also served as an associate editor for the Journal of Aquatic Plant Management and the Journal of Plant Ecology.
Zhu has held leadership roles in the Northeast Aquatic Plant Management Society, where he served as a board member and as the organization’s president.
One project that stands out because of its local connection focuses on a branch of the Park River that runs through the University of Hartford campus, and the estrogen, nitrates, and phosphates that are found there. The study provided valuable information on the impact that the campus and adjacent residential and urban areas have on water quality and aquatic life. Zhu led a study on the impact of the construction of an on-campus bridge on aquatic life, which allowed his students to see the relevance of their work in their immediate surroundings.

Shoshana Trachtenberg Award
The contributions of Laura Pence go well beyond the chemistry classrooms where she has proven herself as a dedicated, personable, and knowledgeable educator.
Pence has led many important University initiatives, serving as cochair of the steering committee charged with overseeing the reaccreditation process through the New England Commission for Higher Education; serving on the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Committee and its Council on Promotion and Tenure; and working with the strategic planning and search committees for the Department of Biology and the Department of Philosophy.
For the accreditation project alone, she expertly coordinated the work of more than 100 people on nine committees to reach the targeted goal.
Pence, who previously chaired the Department of Chemistry, extends her leadership skills to such tasks as logistics and security to assure safe and effective study and research spaces for all students. She helped design and organize the chemistry space during construction of the Biology-Chemistry Building, established a functional buddy system for research students, and served on the President’s Commission on Sustainability.
Several years ago, Pence played a vital role in the successful development of the University’s environmental studies minor, and more recently has been working on creating new bachelor’s programs in environmental studies and environmental science.
Pence counts among her most significant areas of interest inorganic chemistry, environmental chemistry, and science policy. She spent a year in Washington, D.C., as a Congressional Science Policy Fellow, which fostered her awareness of the intersection between government and science, an important topic she shares with her students. Always an inquisitive and responsible scientist-educator, she remains active in the American Chemical Society, for which she chaired the Committee on Environmental Improvement, sat on its Board of Directors, and currently serves on its Education Committee.
Regarded as an exceptional mentor, Pence takes all the time necessary to guide her students through all phases of their University of Hartford experience.

FACULTY AWARDS
Laura Pence Professor of Chemistry College of Arts and Sciences
This award honors a full-time faculty member for scholarly and/or artistic creativity.
and
This recognition is given annually to a faculty member in honor of sustained, consummate service to the University.
Mehmet Dede Associate Professor, Music and Performing Arts Management The Hartt School
Donald W. Davis University Interdisciplinary Studies Award
Presented annually to faculty members who are highly effective interdisciplinary teachers and scholars, have made significant contributions to the UIS program, and are true advocates for interdisciplinary education.
In addition to being a popular educator, Associate Professor Mehmet Dede has developed a stellar reputation for the advancements he has made with regard to course offerings at The Hartt School that focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging (DEIJB).
One intriguing course he created in the University Interdisciplinary Studies (UIS) program—Cultural Conversations in Music, Film, and the Performing Arts—is a shining example of his vision by the way it addresses critical DEIJB issues on the same level with gender inequality challenges.
“We know all too well it can be difficult to build bridges across our academic offerings. When a professor like Mehmet Dede makes the effort to welcome all majors into the classroom, it’s a big win for interdisciplinary learning that fulfills our promise to students to engage across the University’s colleges,” says Associate Professor Marcus Thomas, chair of music and performing arts management at Hartt.
Dede’s curriculum work also enables students to interface with local arts organizations as consultants on campaigns in which those groups are engaged.
Another creative course that Dede designed, Discover Music City Nashville, takes even greater leaps beyond the classroom, covering the cultural and commercial significance of what is often referred to as the Music City. Students travel to Nashville during spring break for a brief yet immersive experience where they network with industry executives and observe the city’s musical scene.
As befits the life of a dynamic, interdisciplinary educator, Dede’s personal portfolio is as impressive as his academic one. Among many other activities, he has directed a popular music spot in New York City called Drom, where jazz, classical, international, and so-called new music are celebrated. In addition, Dede directed the New York Gypsy Festival for more than 15 seasons, where he helped present dozens of artists from around the world to international audiences through the festival’s online portal.
Belle K. Ribicoff Junior Faculty Prize
Rachel Walker Assistant Professor of History and Philosophy College of Arts and Sciences
This annual award was founded by longtime University of Hartford supporter and Life Regent Belle K. Ribicoff to recognize outstanding junior faculty members—assistant professors in tenure-track positions—who demonstrate excellence in teaching, scholarly or creative activity, and service.
Rachel Walker, assistant professor of history and philosophy in the College of Arts and Sciences, has distinguished herself at the University of Hartford well beyond her subject expertise. It is the way that she teaches—and the inclusive atmosphere of engagement that she fosters with every lesson—that are of particular note.
“Students praise her passion, intelligence, and ability to make history relevant and fun,” says Steven Rosenthal, chair of the Department of History and Philosophy.
Walker’s syllabus concentrates on a number of sweeping and challenging aspects of American history, including African American history, the history of LGBTQ+ Americans, abortion in the United States, and many other related topics.
Each course is characterized by boundless interaction and intellectual curiosity. Walker is known for her willingness and ability to respond to all questions and concerns, and to make learning as enjoyable as it is constructive.
With PhD and master’s degrees in American history from the University of Maryland, Walker has gone on to great distinction as a scholar of the highest merit through her authorship, speaking engagements, awards, and fellowships. She has presented at more than a dozen notable conferences and seminars.
Her first book, Beauty and the Brain: The Science of the Human Mind in Early America, was recently published by the University of Chicago Press. Walker is currently writing a new book that explores the role of science in helping to determine the significance of the human race. An article that she wrote for the Early American Studies interdisciplinary journal, Facing Race: Popular Science and Black Intellectual Thought in Antebellum America, won the prestigious John M. Murrin Prize—one of more than half a dozen national and international awards and fellowships she has received since 2011.
Walker also helps UHart immeasurably in many activities related to recruitment and retention of students. Her excellence as an educator—and service as a colleague—make her extremely well deserving of the Ribicoff Prize.
