About the University of Hartford
The University of Hartford provides a distinctive educational experience across seven schools and colleges for one of the most diverse student bodies in New England, comprising approximately 4,100 undergraduate and 1,800 graduate students from 48 states and 51 countries. The University’s faculty are attracted by the opportunity to mentor, challenge, and support students as they pursue degrees in more than 100 programs in the arts, humanities, sciences, business, engineering, technology, architecture, education, and health professions.
The University’s charter was signed in 1957, but its roots go back to 1877 when one of the three founding schools, the Hartford Art School, opened. With encouragement from local community and business leaders, the Hartford Art School came together with the Hartt School of Music (now The Hartt School) and Hillyer College in 1957 on a 150-acre stretch of farmland on Bloomfield Avenue known as the Gabriel farm, the last farm in Hartford. In the ensuing 67 years, the campus has more than doubled in physical size and the University has matured in ways that its founders may not have dared to imagine.
The University Mace
Honorary Degrees
The tradition of bestowing honorary degrees can be traced back to universities in Europe during the Middle Ages, becoming commonplace at institutions of higher learning across the globe long before the University of Hartford was chartered in 1957. Through the years, the University of Hartford has awarded honorary degrees to distinguished scholars, artists, musicians, leaders, and dignitaries. Past recipients include Dizzy Gillespie, Arthur Miller, Benny Goodman, Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel, George Burns, Ann Landers, Arthur Ashe, Carl Sagan, Steve Allen, Jeffrey Bezos, Charles Gibson, Edward Albee, Wolf Blitzer, and Joe Torre.
The University Mace precedes the president and board of regents in academic processions. Maces originated as weapons but in modern times have become symbols of authority. The University Mace (shown at right) is 41 inches long and is crowned by a sterling silver globe, engraved with the name of the University and bearing its seal in 24-karat gold. The poplar shaft bears sterling silver bands on which are engraved the names and dates of service of the University’s presidents, and the names and founding dates of the three institutions that came together to form the University in 1957. The base is made of sterling silver and bears the name of the donor, the late Charles Condon, former University secretary and general counsel, who donated the mace in 1987 on the University’s 30th anniversary.

AWARDS AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Stephen M. Mulready M’77
Acting President University of Hartford
Stephen M. Mulready M’77 has served as the University of Hartford’s acting president during the 2023–24 academic year, guiding the University with great care and authenticity. The impact of his leadership will continue to be realized for many years to come.
An alumnus who earned his MBA in management systems at UHart, Mulready became interim dean of the Barney School of Business in August 2020, and was officially named dean in April 2021—the first Barney School graduate to serve in that role. He has been engaged with the University for decades, teaching as a part-time faculty member and serving on both the Barney School of Business Board of Visitors and the University of Hartford Board of Regents.
Mulready is a recognized insurance professional and risk management expert. He previously served as the executive vice president and chief operating officer at Crum & Forster, a leading property and casualty company. He began his insurance career at Aetna, advancing to senior vice president and business leader of national commercial accounts, before moving on to become president of Orion Specialty. Royal Sun Alliance acquired Orion, where Mulready held a range of positions that included president and CEO of U.S. operations. Prior to joining Crum & Forster in 2010, he was CEO of AIX Holdings, Inc.
In addition to his UHart MBA, Mulready earned his bachelor’s degree in insurance management from the University of Connecticut. He also completed the Advanced Executive Program at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, as well as the Advanced Management Program at Fairfield University and the AACSB Bridge Program at the University of Southern California.
Currently, Mulready is an advisor for the Obsidian Insurance Company. He previously served on multiple public boards, including Cover-All Technologies, where he was chair of the audit committee, and Alico, Inc., where he served on the audit and investment committees. Mulready is a former president of the board of directors for the Greater Hartford Arts Council, a former director of the Harford Symphony, and a former board member of Jubilee House.
Donald
Allan Jr. ’86 Chair University of Hartford Board of Regents
Donald Allan Jr. ’86 officially became chair of the University of Hartford Board of Regents last May. He has been a regent since 2015, and is a past member of the Barney School’s Board of Visitors.
In 2022, Allan was named president and CEO of Connecticut-based Stanley Black & Decker (SBD), the world’s largest toolmaker, having joined Stanley in 1999 and advancing throughout the years.
He was instrumental in launching the new Stanley Black & Decker Scholar program at UHart, which is providing students with scholarships, mentoring programs, and early career opportunities. Allan has also made building expansions and renovations possible at UHart, with SBD generously contributing to spaces and technology in the Barney School of Business, the Hursey Center for Advanced Engineering and Health Professions, and the new outdoor track and field scheduled to open later this year.
Allan, a passionate advocate for career readiness and professional development, and his wife, Marilyn, recently made a generous gift to the University to enable and empower student success. In recognition of their generosity and investment in the next generation of industry leaders, UHart has created the Allan Center for Career and Professional Development, representing the many initiatives and programs that are available to students University wide.
Prior to joining SBD in 1999, Allan held financial management positions with Loctite Corporation and spent nine years at Ernst & Young.
Active in the community, Allan is lead director at Andersen Corporation and a member of the Business Roundtable. He also serves as a board member of Hartford HealthCare, Junior Achievement of Southwest New England, Boy Scouts Connecticut Rivers Council, and AdvanceCT, Connecticut’s private nonprofit economic development organization.
Allan earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Hartford and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Jay Malave M’98 Chief Financial Officer
Lockheed Martin
Sonya Halpern M’90
Georgia State Senator
Jay Malave M’98 has served as chief financial officer of Lockheed Martin, one of the nation’s leading global security and aerospace companies, since February 2022. He is responsible for all aspects of the corporation’s financial strategies, processes, and operations.
Malave’s corporate tenure prior to Lockheed Martin is no less impressive. He served as senior vice president and CFO for L3Harris Technologies, where he oversaw all internal and external financial reporting; developed the corporation’s strategic plan; and evaluated and executed mergers and acquisitions.
Prior to joining L3Harris in June 2019, Malave served as vice president and CFO for Carrier Corporation, an operating unit of United Technologies Corporation. He joined UTC’s corporate office in 1997 and held roles of increasing responsibility during his 20-plus years there. In 2011, Malave led the finance functional integration of Hamilton Sundstrand and UTC’s Goodrich acquisition. In 2012, he was appointed head of investor relations for the corporation, where he spent two years working with UTC’s business units to effectively communicate the company’s outlook and performance to investors. Malave was then appointed CFO of UTC Aerospace Systems, where he served until joining Carrier Corporation in 2018.
A Connecticut native who grew up in the Hartford suburb of Newington, Malave has reached the top echelon of corporate success from a modest background. He worked diligently to earn a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Connecticut, a master’s degree in accounting from the University of Hartford, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Connecticut School of Law.
Malave is a current member of the University of Hartford Board of Regents and is a 2022 inductee into the Barney School of Business Alumni Hall of Fame.
Georgia State Senator Sonya Halpern M’90 was first elected in 2020 and is currently serving her second term in the Georgia State Senate. She represents neighborhoods in District 39, one of the most socio-economically diverse in Georgia and the country. As a proponent of equity and opportunity for all, the list of organizations to which she belongs, advises, founded, or has led is much longer than an average résumé—and entirely consistent with her character and that of her family.
Halpern’s legacy includes being the daughter of two graduates of an historically Black university, Tougaloo College in Mississippi. Her parents each had notable careers of their own: Her father first joined the U.S. Air Force before making his mark at IBM for more than 30 years, and her mother joined a company that advocated for people with disabilities.
As she approached her own college years, Halpern decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree at the University of Massachusetts, then came to the University of Hartford for her MBA. After beginning her early career in New York City, Halpern was drawn to Atlanta by a job opportunity at Cox Interactive Media. It was there that she married and began a family—as well as a long streak of work as a tireless and active advocate for equity, access, and opportunity. Halpern has taken on many civic leadership roles and is a founding member of the Atlanta School for the Arts Foundation. Among other honors, she was named one of the “2024 Top State Lawmakers” by James Magazine, a “Top 100 Black Women of Influence” by the Atlanta Business League, and a “Woman of Achievement” by the YWCA.
Currently serving on the University’s Board of Regents, Halpern received one of UHart’s most prestigious honors— an Anchor Award—in 2021 in the category of Outstanding Alum: Impact on Social Responsibility/Civic Engagement.

Alexa Schwartz ’24
College of Arts and Sciences
John G. Martin Scholarship
Awarded biannually to a deserving and qualifying student who wishes to attend a graduate program at a top university in Great Britain.
Alexa Schwartz, an English major in the College of Arts and Sciences, with a concentration in creative writing, has proven herself in countless ways at the University of Hartford. It comes as no surprise to her instructors and classmates that she has already been accepted to Queen Mary University of London to study in its prestigious English literature program for theatre and performance.
First and foremost, Schwartz has consistently demonstrated excellence in writing. She has been noted for a particular skill with persuasive essays, a mature communication style, and an astute approach to perceptive commentary.
“Alexa proved herself to be a strong student through consistent preparation and engagement in class,” says Bryan Sinche, professor of English and chair of the Department of English and Modern Languages. “She was always willing to participate with contributions that were unfailingly meaningful and illuminating.”
Schwartz served as secretary of the school’s Aerie literary magazine, establishing herself as an excellent judge of quality, with an insightful eye into design, distribution, and other important aspects of magazine management. She also has proven herself as a skilled drama critic, and is augmenting that talent by taking modern drama classes on the honors level.
“Alexa was always willing—and even eager—to disagree with her classmates and with me,” Sinche adds. “She was never afraid to stand up for her point of view, even when it went against the run of class discussion. This is evidence of her personal and intellectual maturity.”
Schwartz has already spent some time studying abroad, and that experience led her to want to return overseas so she can continue to benefit from the influence of a diverse group of students.
Crystal Gallagher ’24
College
of Education, Nursing and Health Professions
Agnes and Cornelious Barrett Endowed Scholarship
Presented annually to an exemplary graduating senior based on academic excellence and community service, either within campus or for a town or organization in Greater Hartford.
Crystal Gallagher has proven to be a true leader through her dynamic involvement in many vital groups and initiatives related to physical fitness, functional activities, and social assistance. One of the most notable of these has been the Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) program of The Women’s Advancement Initiative. With LEAD, she has participated in environmental cleanups, assembling care packages for applicable nonprofits, and many other worthwhile endeavors.
“Crystal exhibits a combination of intellectual curiosity, a strong work ethic, and natural emotional intelligence that make her a significant contributor to LEAD and to every other activity in which she’s involved,” says Amy Jaffe Barzach, executive director of The Women’s Advancement Initiative.
Gallagher has served as on on-campus emergency responder and a physical therapy aide. She has shared her organizational energy with a range of campus groups, including the Campus Activities Team and the Exercise in Medicine club. She has also helped patients learn the game of pickleball at a local hospital—and even founded the Pickleball Club at UHart.
This spring, Gallagher is receiving a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions. She anticipates receiving a doctoral degree in physical therapy in 2027.
“Her desire to make a difference is a core foundation for everything she does,” adds Barzach. “It is always a joy to meet such a smart, hard-working, and dedicated student.”
Among her many extra-academic achievements, there is one that Gallagher counts as her proudest: her third-place win in the college bowl events sponsored by the New England chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine.

Daniel Jimenez Gil ’24
College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture
Belle K. Ribicoff Prize
Awarded annually to an exemplary graduating senior who has demonstrated academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, originality of thought, and a commitment to extracurricular activities and community service.
Daniel Jimenez Gil had a fairly clear view of his professional aspiration when he began his studies in the University of Hartford’s College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture. But through his work on a number of projects, Gil realized that his interests extended beyond civil engineering to include programming and other aspects of computer science.
His trajectory through the semesters has included work as a research assistant; internships at top engineering firms; several teaching and mentoring experiences on campus; and a number of student awards, including one from the Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers and another from the Association of General Contractors of Connecticut.
“I have found Daniel to be an outstanding student who is intelligent, hardworking, highly motivated, and with a pleasant personality,” says Clara Fang, professor and chair of the civil, environmental, and biomedical engineering department. “He has displayed a remarkable ability to dive into intricate subjects independently, using a wide array of resources, including academic literature and online references. His ability to grasp complex concepts and apply them effectively was evident throughout all his projects.”
Fang, who worked with Gil on many of those projects, co-authored a research paper with him on AI bridge technology, which Gil had the chance to present in front of the Transportation Research Board in Washington, D.C.
While working with a club called Engineers Without Borders, Gil discovered his love of—and talent for— programming. He began to teach himself computer science and has ventured into areas such as microcontroller programming and training statistical models.
Gil has been accepted into a program in the civil engineering department at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he will research the application of AI and robotics into structural engineering.

Barney School of Business
Humphrey R. Tonkin Award
This award honors a full-time faculty member for scholarly and/or artistic creativity.
Andy Wei Hao, professor of marketing, management, and entrepreneurship at the Barney School of Business, is an educator of great vitality and distinction who has made significant contributions to his field.
A prolific scholar, Hao teaches areas that include principles of marketing, multinational marketing, market research, marketing management, and the global business environment. To that impressive list must be added supplementary research areas such as branding and e-marketing. What further distinguishes Hao’s career is the extent of his portfolio of published papers, many of them in notable journals, and some that have had a substantial influence on the field of marketing. His research is widely regarded as innovative, rigorous, and impactful.
“His work is extremely productive and of the highest scholarly quality,” states Irina Naoumova, professor and chair of Barney’s Department of Management, Marketing, and Entrepreneurship. Naoumova emphasizes that Hao has been instrumental in supporting the scholarly development of many of his Barney colleagues. “He has collaborated with them on several research projects, sharing the best academic publishing strategies, and he has been a true leader who well serves the research community and many professional organizations.”
Hao both organizes and participates in international and regional conferences and workshops, helps edit respected journals, writes book reviews, contributes chapters to books written by other professionals, and sits on several University committees. According to many of his peers, his research and literary contributions not only advance our understanding of international marketing and cross-cultural consumer behavior, but also position UHart as a leader in these areas of study.
“My colleague’s dedication to exploring these research streams has contributed to significant and actionable insights for practitioners,” says Hyunjung Lee, associate professor of marketing. “His multidimensional approach has enriched the academic community and influenced how we perceive and navigate contemporary marketing challenges.”
Roy E. Larsen Award
Maria Esposito Frank
Professor of Italian and Renaissance Studies College of Arts and Sciences
Honoring a full-time faculty member for excellence in teaching and contributions to University life.
Maria Esposito Frank, professor of Italian and Renaissance studies in the Department of English and Modern Languages (College of Arts and Sciences) teaches courses that span some of the most intriguing historical eras and themes, including the Italian Renaissance, Italian language and culture, women in early modern Europe, 20th-century Italian poetry, death in literature, and many others.
In addition to a busy academic schedule, Frank has written extensively on her subjects and has had work published throughout the United States and Europe, including books (as author, co-author, or editor), book reviews, and articles. She has translated critical essays from Russian into Italian, and contemporary poems from Italian into English for literary and scholarly magazines.
“Maria’s passion and knowledge of her subjects are clearly evident, and her students are always engaged in her discussions,” explains Ivana Milanovic, a professor of mechanical engineering who worked with Frank in classes that involved Renaissance readings. “She comes through as a supportive and motivating instructor who creates an environment in which students can be themselves and showcase their knowledge and desire to learn.”
After completing a doctorate with a dissertation in Renaissance studies at Harvard, Frank taught history at UCLA until her arrival at UHart, where she has been teaching, researching, and writing for 27 years. She also designs and conducts study trips to Italy for students.
Frank has been called by many of her peers a model professor who has the skill, commitment, and enthusiasm to inform student learning and increase the visibility and reputation of the University.
“I celebrate her dedication to improving our intellectual climate. Maria is the kind of faculty member who lends her talents where they are needed,” says Bryan Sinche, professor of English and chair of the Department of English and Modern Languages. “As a colleague, I appreciate that she never wavers in her devotion to the highest standards. She crafts her courses so that her students take an active role in their own learning.”

FACULTY AWARDS
Katharine A. Owens
Professor and Chair, Department of Politics, Economics, and International Studies College of Arts and Sciences
Donald W. Davis University Interdisciplinary Studies Award
Presented annually to a faculty member who has made outstanding contributions to the University Interdisciplinary Studies Program.
Katharine A. Owens, professor and chair of the Department of Politics, Economics, and International Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences, combines her teaching and research with magnificent work on behalf of the University Interdisciplinary Studies (UIS) program. Course development and program advocacy are just two of the dozens of ongoing contributions she makes to the platform.
Owens’s accomplishments speak to her dedication to and passion for many interests, which, in addition to politics and economics, include environmental policy, perceptions, and civic engagement.
“Kat’s advocacy for UIS and for university-wide general education is evident in the program’s significant improvements,” states Margaret R. Tarampi, current director of UIS and associate professor of psychology. “Increased full-time faculty participation, diversity initiatives, and assessment strategies are among those advancements. Laura Enzor
Assistant Professor of Biology
College
of Arts and Sciences
Belle K. Ribicoff Junior Faculty Prize
Awarded annually to recognize an outstanding junior faculty member in a tenure-track position who demonstrates combined excellence in teaching, scholarly or creative activity, and service.
Laura Enzor, assistant professor of biology in the College of Arts and Sciences, has forged an outstanding career at the University of Hartford that effectively combines teaching, research, and enduring efforts to improve overall instruction and student performance throughout the college’s scientific community.
Through her research, which centers around ecological physiology, she endeavors to discover how organisms use their physiology to adapt to their environments, and what impact global climate change has on marine life.
“Laura is an extraordinarily thoughtful, reflective, and hardworking teacher. Her success as a biology instructor is notable, but so is the broader impact her teaching has on gateway biology courses and in STEM disciplines,” says Mark Blackwell, interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “Since joining the biology department in the fall of 2019, she has been an important force for improving teaching and learning in the crucial biology sequences.”
Colleagues note how one of Enzor’s decisive strengths is in creating a welcoming classroom atmosphere for all students. That, they say, ably demonstrates her strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging.
Enzor assists other instructors, helps develop various programs, participates in the admission process, and serves on several curriculum, honors, and environmental studies committees. She also continues her important scientific research, one portion of which was recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with a scientific and technological achievement award. Enzor was a postdoctoral researcher at the EPA between 2014 and 2019.
“Laura is one of the hardest working and most dedicated faculty members on our campus,” notes Adam Silver, A&S honors coordinator and associate professor in the biology department. “She’s the most resourceful researcher I have ever met.”

FACULTY AWARDS
Donna Menhart
Associate Dean for Academic Innovation and Professor of Ear Training
The Hartt School
Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Award
Honoring a full-time University of Hartford faculty member for sustained service to the University.
Donna Menhart, associate dean for academic innovation and professor of ear training at The Hartt School, has been using her expertise to the benefit of countless music students both at the University and far beyond campus. At Hartt, in addition to teaching, Menhart contributes to many essential initiatives in music education and appreciation. She has an exemplary record of University service, participating on the Univsersity Curriculum Review Committee and the New Program Review Committee, the Council of Deans Subcommittee for Academic Affairs, and the University’s Assessment Team.
Beyond campus, Menhart has been president of both the Organization of American Kodály Educators and the Kodály Educators of Southern New England. She presents regularly at conferences for groups such as the Connecticut Music Educators Association, the Rhode Island Music Educators Association, and the International Kodály Society.
