Learning disability nursing is an exciting and rewarding career where you can support people from a range of backgrounds to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. They provide hands-on care as well as emotional and educational support in order to promote an individual’s independence. Learning disability nurses work in a number of settings including people’s homes, schools, respite units, hospitals and secure services. They work independently and in multidisciplinary teams, learning how to respond to individual needs. You’ll have the opportunity to develop a high level of personal and practical skills to help improve the quality of life of people with a learning disability and their ability to live as independently as possible. You’ll also learn how to work in partnership with service users, their families, carers and other professionals to promote health and wellbeing. Supported by a team who really understand what it’s like to be a learning disability nurse, you’ll learn through lectures, seminars, group work, simulation and role play.

Placements

You’ll have the opportunity to complete your practice learning experiences in a diverse range of health and social care settings, reflecting the diversity of the services accessed by people with a learning disability. This may include community teams, nursing and residential homes, supported living services, schools, short break services, day opportunities or hospitals and clinics.

Your future

The career opportunities within learning disability nursing are constantly evolving and our graduates are now working as nurses in healthcare trusts, charities and short-term care providers.** After qualification there is an extensive range of training and career opportunities available, where you could provide person-centred support in specialist roles such as epilepsy, safeguarding, autism, behaviour, forensics, palliative care, mental health or complex needs. Other roles could include working as a manager, prescriber, educator, policy maker and consultant nurse.

Entry requirements:

BBB*/DDM/120*/Merit at T Level/ Access Diploma with 45 Level 3 credits 15 at Distinction and 30 at Merit

Additional criteria:

Have completed 12 years of general education GCSE English Language or English Literature and Maths at grade 4/C or above, or Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English Understanding of learning disability nursing Relevant work experience Interview and references DBS and occupational health check

*If you are studying a Science A Level, the endorsement for practical work is essential and a requirement for entry to our degree course.
