Please note that the General Optical Council (GOC) has revised the standards for optometry and this BSc(Hons) may be replaced by a 4 year integrated Masters course. The details of such a course won’t be known until at least summer 2022.

What’s more, in your final year, you’ll have the chance to gain real-world experience through placements in local hospital eye departments and seeing patients with a variety of ocular conditions in our purpose built, state-of-the-art University Eye Clinic here on campus.

Your future

Optometry is a regulated profession requiring registration with and adherence to the General Optical Council (GOC) registration requirements. You can find out more about careers in Optometry on the College of Optometrists website www.college-optometrists.org and registration requirements from the GOC at www.optical.org As a graduate of this course you may work in corporate optometry, in private independent practice, where you can start your own business, in hospital optometry working with other ophthalmic colleagues or in research and teaching.

Course length:

3 years full time

Entry requirements:

A Levels/BTEC AAB* which should include two of the following Science subjects, Mathematics, Physics, Biology or Chemistry, plus a third A Level in another subject excluding General Studies/DDM in Applied Science or Health and Social Care combined with a Science A Level in Mathematics, Physics, Biology or Chemistry at a minimum grade B. Other suitable qualifications may be considered. Please contact the Admissions Office:

*The endorsement for practical work is an essential part of Science A Level study, and is a requirement for entry to our degree course. **The University of Huddersfield currently holds provisional approval from the GOC to provide the Optometry BSc(Hons) programme. Whilst under provisional approval, students recruited onto the programme are not guaranteed entry to the GOC register and may be required to undertake additional assessments through an alternative GOC approved education provider in the event that any aspect of the programme when delivered does not satisfy the GOC standards.
