Casey Carter’s love of science began at a young age. “I remember being in fifth grade, traveling to competitions and participating in Science Olympiad,” Casey said. “Science has always been my favorite subject. In elementary school, I wanted to be a meteorologist, but that expanded into different aspects of science as I grew older.” In middle school, her family moved to South Carolina, and once again science pushed to the forefront of her academic endeavors. “In eighth grade, one of our final projects had us participate in the local science fair. At the time, I was interested in athletic training, so I focused my research and project on preventing concussions in football.”

“My idea was adding a part to the helmet - kind of a padded collar designed to disperse the kinetic energy or force on the brain stem. I made my prototype out of materials I had at home and tested it on a ‘brain replica’ - an inflated bag with eggs in it.” And Casey’s idea worked. She continued to refine her prototype throughout high school and presented her research findings at local, regional and, ultimately, the National Science Fair. That’s when the Mouse called - Mickey Mouse.

“I wanted to ensure that I had growth over my four years in college, and I felt like UK could do that in all aspects I was looking for - academics, social life and networking. I fell in love with my program and there was really no comparison in programs at any other university to what I found here. I also fell in love with Lexington and from my first visit it felt like home away from home.” A home that’s preparing her to pursue her dream of becoming a physician.

In 2018, Casey was invited to participate in the Disney Dreamers Academy, a four-day immersive experience where she shadowed the doctors and practitioners at Disney. “The Dreamers Academy helped validate my dreams and allowed me to network with students from across the nation with big dreams and goals for their Shefuture.”found a similar community - one that could support her aspirations - at the University of Kentucky.

“People are kind of shocked with the amount of opportunities I’ve had as an undergraduate. I do research in my college - shadowing and internships - doors at UK that would not be open to me at another institution. I feel like every opportunity I’ve had is preparing me for various aspects of who I aspire to be as a woman and a professional. There are so many possibilities - clubs and organizations, faculty support, the environment as a whole. That’s what I love about UK the most.”

“My teaching philosophy is to be there - where the students are - understand, get to know them so I can deliver what each of them needs,” Professor Davis said. “I don’t believe that there is one right answer, and I believe that there isn’t one right answer because everyone is different.” What does every student have in common? The ability to make an impact.

Taking what students learn in my class and helping them see the connection to how they can impact other people is what I hope motivates them to push through difficult or boring or whatever challenges that face to get that outcome on the other side.”

What I want my students to understand is that they have a lot of power to change lives of not just them and their families, but of their communities.

As a two-time UK graduate, Olivia Davis, associate director of the Von Allmen School of Accountancy and lecturer, still cannot believe she gets to make the kind of impact on her students that her professors made on her.

Some of the newest and most modern residence halls in the Southeastern Conference – yeah, we have those, too.

At UK, we don’t just say we put students first in everything we do – we put our words into action. In the last 10 years alone, we’ve spent $3.1 billion transforming campus to have everything you’ll need to do all the things you never thought you could.

Where the UK community hangs out, lives and studies on campus are some of the newest facilities in the country and are full of all the amenities - comfy furniture, tons of spaces to charge all your devices, and great snack and dining options.

“Considering the number of students enrolled at UK, I was certain that I would only become close with a select group of friends. I could see myself building that strong community from the get-go but was surprised just how big it could and would grow to be. I know that on a walk to and from class and around campus there are always friendly faces surrounding me, and that is thanks to the abundance and variety of organizations that have allowed me to form these friendships.”

Tanner Thompson grew up in Monticello, Ky., the son of a high school football coach, so he frequently trekked to Lexington with his dad for UK home football games. He thought he knew what campus was like, but it was his campus tour that was the pivotal moment for him. “Touring UK, I felt so at home on campus,” Tanner said. “The residence halls were amazing, the buildings were beautiful and everyone on campus I interacted with was so friendly. There’s a close-knit community feel that truly defines UK. I knew it was the place for me.” That sense of belonging that Tanner felt on his tour has continued throughout his UK “Whenexperience.Itoured campus, I thought it was a huge place, but after arriving on campus, it really feels like home. I am rarely in a place where there are not familiar faces, I have great relationships with my professors and it is extremely easy to get involved,” Tanner Tanner’ssaid. best advice for getting connected at UK - live on campus. “While living on campus, I loved the sense of community that you were able to develop in the halls. Especially as a freshman, you are surrounded by people that are trying to navigate the same new waters that you are. OFFERS MORE THAN A DOZEN INTRAMURAL SPORTS EACH SEMESTER AND IS HOME TO MORE THAN 40 CLUB SPORTS TEAMS Athletics are an exciting aspect of college life, and as a member of Big Blue Nation, you’ll be part of a powerhouse program in one of the country’s top conferences – the Southeastern Conference. UK’s 23 varsity sports have become synonymous with championships. Whether it’s the historic men’s basketball program or the 2020 national champion women’s volleyball team, back-to-back 2021, 2022 rifle national championship team or 2022 SEC women’s basketball tournament champions, the goal every year is simple: compete for and win conference and national championships. And as a student you can take in all the action with tickets that range in price from free to $11. That’s a golden opportunity you’ll want to take advantage of! And speaking of golden, did you know that 22 athletes with UK connections competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics bringing home a schoolrecord 12 medals? Fencing, track and field, rifle and men’s basketball all featured medalwinning Wildcats. It’s always exciting cheering on the Wildcats – blue body paint is optional, but screaming and cheering are not.

LIZZIE PIIPPONEN, ‘23, Naples, Fla., Colleges of Agriculture, Food and Environment; Health Sciences “ UK football games are my favorite! There’s so much energy and excitement. The hair stands up on my arms just thinking about everyone cheering on our team together - showing so much love and passion for our Wildcats!”

GettingKentuckyinvolved in a student organization is not just fun and games (though they are a lot of fun); it’s about making you happier and more successful. Research shows that students who are involved with a student organization are more connected to their university and perform better in the classroom. And with more than 550 student organizations, there’s an activity for you at UK. Join an intramural team, even if you’re not an athlete. Give back through organizations like DanceBlue, a 24-hour no sitting, no sleeping dance marathon to raise money for UK’s Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic. Or take part in academic, social, religious, cultural, arts, media, political, activism, Greek life or other special interest groups to name a few. Get involved - and earn some money - by getting an on-campus job. UK’s student employment team will help you find a job that works with your course schedule.

I’m lucky to have found several student organizations that I am passionate about. Being on the pre-med track, Medicats has allowed me to hear from numerous doctors about their experiences in the medical field and tips on how to reach my goal of becoming a doctor. As a member of Greek life, my sorority has made a huge impact on my experience at UK and given me a lifelong group of friends to experience life with. But most importantly, both organizations have helped me make connections to students with similar goals so we can support one another.”

DOWNTOWN IT’S PRETTY EASY TO SEE WHY LEXINGTON IS A GREAT COLLEGE TOWN. Nestled in the heart of Kentucky’s Bluegrass Region, Lexington is a vibrant, friendly community of a little more than 330,000 and has the amenities of a bustling city, wrapped in small-town charm and surrounded by rolling hills and beautiful horse farms. Our hometown has a close connection with the University and a culture that students describe as close-knit, eclectic, opportunity-rich and supportive of all things local. Lexington is also within a day’s drive of two-thirds of the country’s population, making it an ideal college location that’s not too far away from home. www.visitlex.com THATMOMENTS THAT

“Where I’m from, a lot of kids like me don’t make it to 18,” Tyran said. That inspired Tyran’s purpose, to do more, be more for himself and others - to be a catalyst for change. So Tyran turned to education. “I wanted to work in the field of juvenile delinquency and bring about change for those in the system. I thought law school was the answer, so I took all the necessary steps to go. But when I really sat down and thought about it I wondered, ‘can I change the mindset of youth by being a lawyer?’,” Tyran said. Deciding that his original plan wasn’t the route he wanted to go, Tyran made a new plan - social work. “I dug into social work and discovered that I could really cognitively help youth understand what was happening to them. I was drawn to the program at UK through Dean Miller; I thought here I could learn how to expand myself and grow from a diverse group of people,” Tyran said. “Literally I was sitting in my first social work class and was like ‘whoa, I love this.’” Now with his master’s degree in social work in hand, Tyran will use his UK education and experiences as he continues his never-ending pursuit to create change.

In life, there are wins and losses. A win doesn’t always equal success and a loss doesn’t necessarily equate to failure. Instead, Tyran Price believes it’s what we gain from those experiences, and how you use them to learn and grow, that defines true victory. Growing up on the Southside of Chicago, he would watch as unsolved problems compounded - creating layers of trouble for others around him.
