2018 Interfraternity Council Recruitment Guide

Page 1

ON BEHALF OF THE INTERFRATERNITY COUNCIL, WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY! Attending the University of Kentucky provides ample opportunities for students to grow as individuals. Joining a fraternity is a great first step in ensuring you get the most out of your college experience. Becoming an IFC fraternity man can provide you with opportunities for leadership, philanthropy, community service, networking and, of course, brotherhood and friendship. We, the Interfraternity Council, work to promote the interests and ideals of our member organizations and to advance the fraternity and sorority community. We provide resources, programming and leadership that foster beneficial relationships between chapters and provide tools for success. We also host several events during the year to bring the IFC community together, establish and maintain legislative and judicial procedures for the IFC community and give out awards of recognition to our chapters. The Interfraternity Council of the University of Kentucky is committed to bringing excellence to our community. It is our hope that you decide to join one of the many well-established and respected chapters here at UK. Please feel free to check out the individual chapter profiles in this booklet or on our website. It should also be used as a guide to the structured recruitment process for Fall 2018. We look forward to meeting you in August! The 2018 Interfraternity Council Executive Board

FREQUENTLY ASK

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO JOIN A FRATERNITY? Joining a fraternity at UK means joining a lifelong brotherhood as well as a strong community where you will be able to build relationships and foster friendships. Members of our fraternities hold themselves to a level of high achievement in academics, leadership, service and personal growth. It is important to our community to maintain strong academic performance, a good image within the community and active campus involvement. For more information related to fraternity life, please visit the University of Kentucky’s Fraternity and Sorority Life Office webpage at www.uky.edu/greeklife/.

HOW MUCH TIME IS REQUIRED TO BE A MEMBER? Participating in any worthwhile activity always requires a time investment. The old saying “you get out of it what you are willing to put into it” could not be more true. Most of our fraternity men are proficient in successfully balancing academics, a part-time job and a social life alongside chapter membership. Although there are some mandatory commitments that are set well in advance (i.e. weekly meetings, community service projects, new member education, etc.), a member can be as involved as they choose to be. Time requirements vary from group to group depending upon how ambitious of a programming calendar the chapter has. In our experience, the students that are most active and involved are usually the ones most satisfied with their decision to join a fraternity.

HOW WILL MY GRADES BE IMPACTED BY JOINING? Last fall, the IFC new-member GPA at UK was a 3.14, while the UK all-freshman male GPA was a 2.89. Why the difference? Academic success is a key component to fraternity and sorority life. All fraternities at UK place a value on the academic success of their members. A few of the ways that fraternities support the academics of their members is through minimum grade requirements for being initiated into the chapter and to hold officer positions, study halls and workshops on study skills, test taking and time management.

07

ED QUESTIONS

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO JOIN? Like many opportunities for involvement in college, there is a financial commitment associated with joining a fraternity. The costs go toward inter/ national headquarters fees, chapter operating expenses and programming. Financial obligations differ among individual chapters but most have a set amount for semester dues. Additional costs throughout the semester may be for t-shirts, other organizations’ philanthropy events, etc. There may be payment plans available for students, as well as scholarships within the individual chapters. The average dues for IFC are $750 for out of house members and $3000 for in house members. Questions about membership costs are great to ask during IFC recruitment. WHAT IS THE ALCOHOL POLICY? The University of Kentucky’s alcohol policy does not allow alcohol in chapter houses or on chapter property except for events approved by the Fraternity and Sorority Life Office. Events that are registered with the office must follow both university policies, as well as the inter/national organization policies for risk reduction. There may be events hosted by fraternities and sororities (date parties, formals, tailgates, etc.) where alcohol is present, but these events must follow firm guidelines about risk reduction and safety. All recruitment and new member activities should be alcohol free.

WILL I BE HAZED IF I JOIN? Hazing is prohibited at the University of Kentucky. All students, faculty, staff and visitors are expected to follow the hazing prevention policy, not just fraternities and sororities. The chapters at UK work diligently to ensure that their members are safe, respected and supported during their membership. More information about hazing prevention can be found at stophazing.uky.edu.
