UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY
On behalf of the Interfraternity Council, welcome to the University of Kentucky! Attending the University of Kentucky provides ample opportunities for students to grow as individuals. Joining a fraternity is a great first step to ensure you get the most out of your college experience. Becoming an IFC fraternity man can provide you with opportunities for leadership, philanthropy, community service, networking and, of course, brotherhood and friendship. We, the Interfraternity Council, work to promote the interests and ideals of our member organizations and to advance the fraternity and sorority community. We provide resources, programming and leadership that foster beneficial relationships between chapters and provide tools for success. We also host several events during the year to bring the IFC community together, establish and maintain legislative and judicial procedures for the IFC community and give out awards of recognition to our chapters. The Interfraternity Council of the University of Kentucky is committed to bringing excellence to our community. It is our hope that you decide to join one of the many chapters here at UK. Please check out the individual chapter profiles in this booklet and use this as a guide to the structured recruitment process for Fall 2019. We look forward to meeting you in August! WHAT IS IFC? Fraternities and sororities have a rich tradition at the University of Kentucky, starting in the 1890s and continuing to provide support, friendship and leadership to students and the UK community today. Being a member of a fraternity or sorority is a great way for students to be involved, form lifelong friendships, participate in community service and philanthropic endeavors and increase their leadership skills. The Interfraternity Council is the governing body of a large portion of the men’s fraternities at UK. IFC is dedicated to fostering a valuable fraternity experience and is passionate about the development of the undergraduate men who comprise member organizations. Joining an IFC organization is a great way to get involved on campus and continue pursuing high academic performance and service to the community. Interfraternity Council chapters participate in a primary recruitment process at the start of each semester. This guide will provide more information about that process and the individual member organizations.

WHAT IS A RHO ALPHA? The mission of the Rho Alpha program is to provide potential new members with encouragement and mentorship as they participate in the IFC fraternity recruitment process. Rho Alphas, or recruitment advisors, are members of IFC fraternities who have chosen to guide potential new members through the primary recruitment process rather than assisting their chapter in the recruitment of new members. The Rho Alpha experience exists to facilitate a positive recruitment experience as well as provide guidance and support for potential new members as they begin their journey within the University of Kentucky fraternity and sorority community. Rho Alphas are randomly assigned to PNMs in early August. At that time, Rho Alphas will begin contacting their potential new members to clarify any aspects of the recruitment process that may be confusing as well as to update them on events that are coming up during K Week and informal recruitment. Rho Alphas serve as an unbiased guide to help PNMs make informed decisions about their experience throughout recruitment.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS HOW MUCH TIME IS REQUIRED TO BE A MEMBER? Participating in any worthwhile activity always requires a time investment. The old saying “you get out of it what you are willing to put into it” could not be more true. Most of our fraternity men are proficient in successfully balancing academics, a part-time job and a social life alongside chapter membership. Although there are some mandatory commitments that are set in advance (i.e. weekly meetings, community service projects, new member education, etc.), a member can be as involved as they choose to be. Time requirements vary from group to group depending upon how ambitious of a programming calendar the chapter has. In our experience, the students who are most active and involved are usually the ones most satisfied with their decision to join a fraternity. HOW WILL MY GRADES BE IMPACTED BY JOINING? Academic success is a key component to fraternity and sorority life. All fraternities at UK place a value on the academic success of their members. Many chapters have minimum grade requirements for being initiated into the chapter and to hold officer positions, as well as host study halls and workshops on study skills, test taking and time management. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO JOIN? Financial obligations differ among individual chapters. The costs go toward inter/ national headquarters fees, chapter operating expenses and programming. Additional costs throughout the semester may be for t-shirts, other organizations’ philanthropy events, etc. Payment plans and scholarships may be available within the individual chapters. The average active member dues for IFC are $750 for out of house members and $3,000 for in house members. The average new member dues are $625. Questions about membership costs are great to ask during IFC primary recruitment. WHAT IS THE ALCOHOL POLICY? The University of Kentucky’s alcohol policy does not allow alcohol in chapter houses or on chapter property except for events approved by the Fraternity and Sorority Life Office. Events must follow both university policies as well as the inter/national organization policies for risk reduction. There may be events hosted by fraternities and sororities (date parties, formals, tailgates, etc.) where alcohol is present, but these events must follow firm guidelines about risk reduction and safety. All recruitment and new member activities should be alcohol free. WILL I BE HAZED IF I JOIN? Hazing is prohibited at the University of Kentucky. All students, faculty, staff and visitors are expected to follow the hazing prevention policy, not just fraternities and sororities. The chapters at UK work diligently to ensure their members are safe, respected and supported during their membership. More information about hazing prevention can be found at stophazing.uky.edu.
