What is primary recruitment?
page for tips to keep in mind throughout recruitment!
Primary recruitment is a structured process that helps potential new members (PNMs) and sorority members learn more about one another. Each round of recruitment is organized to focus on a different area, including membership expectations, chapter values and chapter programs. Throughout the recruitment process, PNMs talk with sorority members from each chapter, as well as participate in activities and view presentations that will provide more information about what means most to each sorority.
The recruitment process is designed to allow all students to fulfill their academic responsibilities and assist in acclimating to university life. The process is also designed to serve in the best interest of both the chapter and the potential new members through mutual selection. Throughout the recruitment process, PNMs prioritize the chapters they are interested in returning to visit, and chapters prioritize which PNMs they are interested in inviting to return. After the last round of primary recruitment, PNMs and chapters will list their top membership preferences. Panhellenic limits the size of each sorority’s new member class, so it is possible someone may not match with their first choice and instead may match with their second choice.
NOTE: Any photos not exhibiting mask wearing or physical distancing were taken prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Panhellenic is committed to working with the University to encourage all students to protect, respect and do their part.
WHAT IS
The University of Kentucky Panhellenic Association is the second largest student organization on campus with almost 4,000 members within 15 sorority chapters. The Panhellenic Council, commonly referred to as “Panhellenic,” serves as the governing body for the Panhellenic Association. As a council, Panhellenic works to unite all members together to focus on the common goals of scholarship, philanthropy and sisterhood, which create a network of support for chapters and members. Panhellenic provides interactive programs and activities for sorority members and all University of Kentucky students. 4
The traditions and values of the Panhellenic community originate from our individual organizations’ founders. Women’s fraternities emerged when women began being admitted into colleges with little support in this new frontier. Their founders believed women should help, inspire and motivate other women to achieve academic success and change the world around them. In 1902, 10 women’s fraternities came together to create a governing body that would unite all fraternity women across the country called the National Panhellenic Conference. At UK, these values have served as the cornerstone of our community and traditions since the first sorority was established here in 1908.
The Panhellenic Creed
We, as Undergraduate Members of women’s fraternities, stand for good scholarship, for guarding of good health, for maintenance of fine standards, and for serving, to the best of our ability, our college community. Cooperation for furthering fraternity life, in harmony with its best possibilities, is the ideal that shall guide our fraternity activities. We, as Fraternity Women, stand for service through the development of character inspired by the close contact and deep friendship of individual fraternity and Panhellenic life. The opportunity for wide and wise human service, through mutual respect and helpfulness, is the tenet by which we strive to live.

THE CORE VALUES OF
Academics
Academic achievement is a top priority for members, and each chapter takes great pride in its level of scholastic achievement. Sororities place great emphasis on encouraging, developing and maintaining academic progress. Panhellenic provides programs to promote strong study habits and other incentives to support academic improvement. Additionally, time management skills of sorority women improve as they work to attain desired scholastic goals and meet chapter responsibilities. While no minimum GPA is required to participate in primary recruitment, you should take note of the minimum standard for membership of each chapter listed in this guide.
Philanthropy
University of Kentucky Panhellenic chapters support a strong tradition of service to the UK campus, community and partnering organizations. Each chapter invests a considerable amount of time into furthering their national philanthropic causes, while also serving the Lexington community. Panhellenic is proud to support the Circle of Sisterhood Foundation as the council’s primary philanthropic partner. Through the Circle of Sisterhood, the council strives to educate and empower women around the world by raising money to send young women to school as well as to sponsor a school build in a developing country.
6
Each of the chapters within the Panhellenic community were founded on a unique set of values that have inspired traditions that have withstood the test of time. These traditions can be found in our activities, behavior and, most importantly, the new members chapters initiate into their organizations.
Leadership
Throughout history, Panhellenic’s purpose has and will always be to empower and inspire women to reach their full potential as leaders. In addition to the numerous leadership roles within each chapter and the Panhellenic Council, the sorority experience provides women with opportunities to become involved within a variety of diverse organizations on our campus. Sorority women can be found in leadership roles within the Student Government Association, Student Activities Board, academic and leadership honorary societies and many other departmental and student organizations. Involvement and active participation in leadership activities enable sorority women to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in today’s fast-paced job market.
Belonging and Engagement
While each chapter has its own values, the foundation of a sorority experience is finding friendships and opportunities to belong on campus. Formals, date parties, sisterhood events and chapter retreats all support the goal of bringing members together to develop bonds of friendship. The close bond of friendship shared among members provides a strong support system that encourages women to pursue their goals and provides a sense of kinship within the college community. All sororities maintain a responsible social policy and promote Panhellenic standards for careful planning of safe social activities. This includes promoting healthy behaviors to prevent COVID-19 and working with the University to encourage all students to protect, respect and do their part.
7
Financial
Joining a Panhellenic chapter carries a financial commitment that is expected to be fulfilled throughout the years of chapter membership. The financial obligations of membership are often met by the member themselves through a job or customized payment plans. The cost of dues differs between chapters, so it is important to ask questions about finances during recruitment! On average, new members can expect to pay $1,350 for the first semester of membership. This amount includes several one-time costs, such as national fees and a membership pin. Members who live in the chapter house pay an average of $4,800 per semester, which includes dues as well as meals and rent for the chapter house. Members who do not live in the house pay an average of $1000 per semester in chapter dues. A full list of chapter costs will be provided to every PNM after registering for recruitment.
Housing
While not all chapters are currently housed, this is an important part of the expectations of membership. Living in a sorority house is a great transition from living in the residence halls because it has many of the same benefits as on-campus housing, plus the opportunity to live with your sisters. Great advantages of living in a sorority house include being in the central location of all chapter activities, having meals served Monday through Friday and rooming with at least one other member. If a chapter has housing, you should expect to live in the house for at least two semesters. All sorority housing is different, so this is another great conversation topic during recruitment.
Time Commitment
The Panhellenic community prides itself on high levels of participation in university and council events that occur throughout the school year. While there are many optional events provided within each chapter, members should expect their attendance to be required at chapter meetings, philanthropy events and any other mandatory programming within the cost of dues. The specific requirements are covered by each chapter during Philanthropy Round.

Recruitment Basics How to Register
Women who want to participate in Panhellenic Primary Recruitment need to register online at uky.mycampusdirector2.com and pay the registration fee. The registration form asks important questions, including activities and interests, as well as academic accomplishments. The registration fee covers the cost of your participation in recruitment, including three t-shirts, two meals and the programming provided by Panhellenic. We encourage everyone to register by July 17 to receive the early bird registration rate, but registration will be open from May 1 to August 25.
Early bird by July 17: $150 Regular before August 1: $175 Late between August 1 and August 25: $200
Gamma Chis
Panhellenic trains a group of women, known as Gamma Chis, for the purpose of providing a more enjoyable and less stressful atmosphere during primary recruitment. All Gamma Chis remain disaffiliated from their own chapters during recruitment. Disaffiliation enables Gamma Chis to answer questions and guide potential new members without bias or preference to a particular chapter. Please do not ask your Gamma Chi her affiliation, nor share her affiliation with other PNMs if known. Your Gamma Chi will provide information about the process, accompany you to primary recruitment functions and provide a listening ear as you make decisions concerning sorority membership. Panhellenic chooses Gamma Chis based on enthusiasm for UK and sorority life, as well as objectivity and dependability.
PNM Orientation
PNM Orientation is designed to give you all of the information you need to be successful during primary recruitment. Orientation is split in two parts. First, each PNM will go to an orientation session on either August 23 or 24. This session includes a speaker to learn more about what values-based recruitment is, how recruitment works and how to talk about their values throughout recruitment. Then on Friday, August 27, PNMs will meet with their Gamma Chi groups and get to participate in fun activities to explore their values, decision making skills and what to expect throughout the recruitment process. Later that night, Gamma Chi groups will attend Recruitment Kickoff to socialize! 10
Open House
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, AUGUST 28-29
During Open House, you will be attending functions at each of the 14 chapters over the two-day period. This initial round is designed to familiarize you with the chapters and the benefits of joining a Panhellenic sorority. Your Gamma Chi group will accompany you to each chapter throughout this round. These first two days are designed to be casual, so have fun! Types of conversations: You will be having get-to-know-you conversations in this round, including what you did over the summer, what hobbies and interests you have, where you call home and much more.

Philanthropy
FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 3-4
The second round marks the beginning of the invitational rounds, and you may attend up to 10 chapters across the two days. You will attend these functions by yourself because each potential new member will have an individualized schedule. Gamma Chis will be stationed around campus to help you navigate traveling from chapter to chapter. This round of recruitment focuses on each sorority’s philanthropic partner. Types of conversations: You should expect to talk about how you have been involved in community service and how you see yourself contributing to the university and Lexington communities. Each chapter will discuss the requirements of membership, including academics, time commitments and community service. We encourage you to ask questions!
Wear This: Dressy shorts, casual skirts, comfortable sandals Not That: Casual shorts, fancy dresses, uncomfortable shoes

Sisterhood SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 5
The third round allows PNMs to attend up to six chapters. Each function lasts longer to allow more in-depth conversations. Sororities present information about the ideals, responsibilities and bonds that unite their members. By this round, you may begin to notice more meaningful connections being made in the chapters you visit. You will also be able to recognize the individuality and spirit of each sorority. Sorority members may share personal feelings about their chapter to assist you in understanding the uniqueness of each sorority. Types of conversations: During this round, you will be talking about what means the most to you. This can range from family and friends to other important aspects of your life. The chapters will be talking about their values and how they relate to your values. Each chapter will review its financial and housing expectations with you on this day, so be prepared to ask questions.
Wear This: Casual dresses, skirt outfits, blouse and dress pants, dressy sandals Not That: Shorts, fancy dresses, uncomfortable shoes

Preference MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 6
Preference is the last day of recruitment rounds. An invitation to a preference function indicates a sorority’s strong interest in you as a future member. You may attend up to two functions on this day. Preference functions have a more serious tone; a sorority’s presentation will reflect the values and ideals held in high esteem by members. Listen carefully to what the women say as they are revealing the strongest characteristics of their chapter to you. Types of conversations: This day you should be having deeper conversations about how you could fit into the chapter. You will be talking to the members about why they chose their organization and how you could contribute to that sisterhood. Focus on what group is going to make you the best version of yourself.
Wear This: Reception dress attire, comfortable dress shoes Not That: Prom-style or sequined dresses, shorts, uncomfortable shoes

Bid Day
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7

Chapters will organize fun activities for you to get to know your new member class and more members of the chapter that evening. All activities will be wrapped up no later than 10:30 p.m. on this day so that you can be well rested for classes on Wednesday. The new member period can last as few as four weeks or span an entire semester, depending on the chapter. New member meetings are typically held one night a week. During this time, you learn about the history of your chapter, and your inter/national organization. Many scholarship, philanthropic and social activities are planned by the chapter to help you get to know your sisters and other members of your new member class.

Frequently
ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need alumnae references?
Alumnae references, or recommendation letters, are not required to participate in the primary recruitment process at UK. While some organizations do require a recommendation from an alumna, it is the responsibility of the sorority to obtain that recommendation. Potential new members are NOT required to secure recommendations in order to receive bids. Alumnae members should visit the organization’s website to submit an alumna reference.
What is a legacy? Do I need to be one to join a sorority? A legacy is a close relative of a member of a sorority (usually mothers, grandmothers and sisters), but each chapter has a different policy on recruiting legacies. Legacies are not guaranteed a bid, and all potential new members are expected to consider all chapters equally. It is important that each PNM find a chapter with whom she shares values and feels comfortable.
Does everyone receive a bid?
The purpose of the recruitment process is to allow you and the chapters to decide on the best fit. The reality is that not everyone who goes through recruitment finds a match. Every effort is made to provide opportunities for involvement to all women who are interested in sorority membership.
What about COB?
Continuous Open Bidding (COB) begins after the conclusion of primary recruitment and continues throughout the academic year. You are only eligible to participate in COB if you have not matched to a chapter during primary recruitment. COB events are usually very relaxed and might include things like having a movie night, going bowling or other informal activities. Participating sororities will contact you to invite you to attend their membership activities or host open events anyone can attend. Keep in mind, you will not hear from all the sororities. Some chapters fill their total during the fall recruitment process and are not eligible to participate in COB.
You can register for COB online at bit.ly/SororityInterest. COB has no registration fee. Questions regarding COB can be answered by sorority women or the Fraternity and Sorority Life Office at 859-257-3151. 30
Fraternity and Sorority Life
AT UK
Panhellenic primary recruitment is not the only way to join the fraternity and sorority community at UK! The University of Kentucky is proud to support four governing councils: Interfraternity Council (IFC), National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), Panhellenic Council and the United Greek Council (UGC). Both NPHC and UGC provide opportunities for exceptional sorority membership experiences.
Phi Sigma Rho
Phi Sigma Rho, or Phi Rho, is an associate member of the Panhellenic Council. As an associate member, Phi Rho does not participate in the primary recruitment process. Membership is limited to women pursuing a degree in engineering or technical studies. You can find more information about Phi Sigma Rho at uk.phisigmarho.org.
National Pan-Hellenic Council
The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is a coordinating body of the seven active chapters of historically African American sororities and fraternities at UK. NPHC works to provide advocacy, as well as educational and cultural programming. You can find more information about the four sororities within this council at kentuckyNPHC.com.
