First-Generation Connections First-Generation Student Advising is here to help firstgeneration students at UK navigate the complexities of higher education. We do this by providing targeted advising, offering mentoring opportunities and sponsoring a living-learning community. The university defines a “firstgeneration student” as neither parent or guardian having earned a bachelor’s degree. Come connect with us! Fraternity and Sorority Life Fraternities and sororities have a rich tradition at the University of Kentucky, starting in the 1890s. They continue to provide support, friendship and leadership to students and the UK community today. Being a member of a fraternity or sorority is a great way for students to be involved, form lifelong friendships, participate in community service and philanthropic endeavors and increase their leadership skills. This session provides incoming students and their families more information about the membership opportunities here at UK, as well as time to ask questions of the FSL staff. Internships One of the most important career development experiences that students can participate in is an internship. It is a great space to test out, explore and learn about different jobs and make decisions about maximizing your time at UK as you prepare for the working world. Internship experience is a key activity that employers look for when recruiting new graduates for employment opportunities. You’re invited to meet with representatives from the James W. Stuckert Career Center to learn how to find an internship, how it fits into your four-year plan and how to earn academic credit! Lewis Honors College Advising Session Lewis Honors College students, you’ll want to attend this session! Join us for advising for students admitted to the Lewis Honors College; meeting other Lewis Honors students, faculty and staff; and learning information about special opportunities within the program. Ensemble auditions take place a few days before the first day of class every fall, with auditions also sometimes taking place before the spring semester. A Smarter Campus Starts in the Palm of Your Hand. In April, we announced the University of Kentucky Smart Campus Initiative featuring a distinctive collaboration with Apple to provide you and all incoming freshman with an iPad Air, an Apple Pencil and a smart keyboard. The iPad Air initiative – like everything we do – is rooted in student success. DISTRIBUTION PROCESS • After the general welcome session for all “see blue.” U attendees, students will be divided into UKonnect groups, each led by a student orientation leader. • Each UKonnect group has been pre-assigned a time slot to receive their iPads during the 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. distribution window on day one. • Students will also participate in small group discussion, eat lunch and attend the campus resource fair during this three-hour window. • We have iPads for all first-time freshmen, so don’t worry if your UKonnect time slot is later in the window. • During your UKonnect group’s time slot, your orientation leader will take the group to the Cats Den for pickup and deployment. • If you need assistance or accommodations for the deployment process, or will feel more comfortable in a smaller setting, please let your orientation leader know. A second deployment location will be available for students at 330 AB Gatton Student Center from 8 – 9 a.m. and 1:30 – 5 p.m. and will also serve as a troubleshooting location for questions on day two of orientation. • During deployment, you will be asked to: • Review and sign the student iPad agreement • Login using your linkblue username and password twice • First connecting you to the university’s WIFI – eduroam • Second setting up your UKY email on your iPad Please wait to connect your iTunes account/Apple ID to your iPad until you return home.
