W H AT DOE S IT M E A N T O BE A W I LDC AT ? Our challenge to you.

Our first president, James Kennedy Patterson, kept his vision for the university alive through sheer force of will. More than a century ago, our mascot was chosen because the football team showed that same tenacity in a hard-fought road victory. And it’s that spirit of determination that defines the University of Kentucky to this day. Being a Wildcat means fighting for your place in the world. It means being hungry for knowledge, seeking out opportunities beyond the classroom. It means making your own path and building the life that you want. It won’t be easy. But nothing worth having is. The University of Kentucky has built a campus designed for your success. The resources are in place for you to do something great, to make something new, to realize your full potential. It’s all here. The question is … are you ready to rise to the challenge?

Lexington is a vibrant, growing community that is closely connected with the university while still maintaining a culture that students describe as closeknit, quirky, opportunity-rich and supportive of all things local. You get the best of both worlds here - urban bustle adjacent to campus and beautiful rolling hills and immaculate horse farms are just a short drive out of town. Lexington is peppered with historic sites, hidden parks and beautifully preserved architecture just waiting to be discovered. Explore downtown by bike or on foot and you’ll soon fall in love with Lexington’s historic charm. Downtown Lexington is close to campus, easy to navigate and home to an increasing number of local eateries, coffee shops, beloved pizza joints, live music venues, outdoor seasonal events and more. Head out in any direction and you’ll soon be surrounded by the beautiful 6

bluegrass of Kentucky, where plenty of outdoor activities and adventures await. Outdoor buffs can hike, camp, canoe, wildlife-watch and more at Red River Gorge, a scenic natural canyon system less than an hour from campus. For fishing fans, Elkhorn Creek is one of the state’s best-known streams for fishing small-mouth bass, and it offers canoeing, kayaking and sightseeing. Bikers, walkers and runners will love the Legacy Trail, a 12-mile trail that begins downtown and ends at the famous Kentucky Horse Park.

ALL THINGS HORSE Being smack dab in the middle of horse country means there are plenty of ways to experience the beauty and charm of the “Horse Capital of the World.” Whether it’s cheering on Thoroughbred racehorses at Keeneland, visiting the 1,200-acre Kentucky Horse Park or exploring one of the 450 surrounding horse farms in the area, there are endless opportunities to immerse yourself in the unique scene around you.

BRAGGING POINTS With nationally recognized merits and a community that embraces students and alums, it’s no wonder why UK students love Lexington - and why many alumni choose to stick around after graduation.

IN V E ST IN YOU R F U T U R E See our vision for you.

Five years ago, we had a vision. The idea was simple, but powerful: Build a campus for students – what they need, how they learn, where they can succeed. In the last five years alone, we spent more than $2 billion to make the University of Kentucky a place where students are at the center of everything that we do. That meant building residence halls with modern living and learning spaces to grow a sense of community. High-tech classroom facilities that foster learning through collaborative spaces and cutting-edge teaching tools. A new student center that would serve as a living room for the entire campus, where organizations can meet and plan and where concerts, plays and movies bring a campus together. We’ve invested in our most valuable resource - you - because we know what a UK degree can mean to you and to your family, and we are committed to helping you reach your goals. With that in mind, the University of Kentucky has identified four areas that are critical to student achievement - the Four Pillars of Academic Excellence.

10

11

FOUR

PILLARS OF

AC A D E M I C E XCE LLE N CE BELONGING AND ENGAGEMENT

S T U D E N T H E A LT H AND WELLNESS

Your education at UK is more than just exams and grades; it is belonging to a community that supports your growth, challenges your viewpoints and builds lasting relationships. With more than 600 student organizations, you can connect with other students and expand your interests across music and the arts; spirituality and religion; culture; service and philanthropy; sports and recreation; and much more. If you can’t find the organization you are looking for, grab a few friends and start your own. Live on campus or join a Living Learning Program to really make campus feel like your new Kentucky home. They say, “home is where the heart is,” and at the University of Kentucky, we want to make sure you feel at home.

Your well-being is at the core of your growth and development not only as a college student, but as an adult in the global marketplace. With an emphasis on the dimensions of wellness emotional, financial, intellectual, physical, social and spiritual - the University of Kentucky wants to equip you with the tools and knowledge necessary for self-actualization. We provide services for your personal wellbeing and offer multiple opportunities for leadership and professional development such as ambassador programs, student employment and internships. Whether you wish to try something new, change up your lifestyle for some healthier or safer habits or simply find ways to continue your healthy habits as a college student, we have everything you need to ensure your success!

12

AC ADEMIC SUCCESS

Academic success is at the center of everything we do at the University of Kentucky. Taking a student-centered approach, Student and Academic Support is just one of several units within the Division of Student and Academic Life focused on your academic and personal success. We provide support and resources to not only enhance academic achievement, but also help address your need for support in other areas of your life. Graduation is an important milestone, but student success is also defined by how well you develop intellectually, emotionally, socially and ethically during your time at UK.

F I N A N C I A L S TA B I L I T Y

Being away from home for the first time can be challenging - especially learning to manage your own finances. Money management isn’t always taught in high school but we know there is a need to teach financial literacy to our students to ensure future success. The University of Kentucky’s Student Financial Wellness Center is geared toward engaging our students in financial literacy programs, and it provides a place for peer mentorship through the MoneyCATS team. The center is also a resource dedicated to the entire UK community supporting the evolving financial needs of students across campus.

What is it like to be a Wildcat? We can tell you all of the University of Kentucky superlatives, show you our beautiful campus in photographs and tout our academic achievements, but to really know what it is like to be a student at UK, you need to visit campus and experience it for yourself. There’s a spirit on campus that is like none other - a spirit that is proud of our traditions and energized for the future. The University of Kentucky Visitor Center and its team of Wildcat Ambassadors are ready to share their “see blue.” stories with you. Start your day at UK with an information session hosted by our Visitor Center team. In this presentation, you will hear about admission, housing and dining, tuition and fees, billing information, student financial aid, scholarship opportunities and student life; we will also answer any questions you may have about these topics. Immediately following the session, you will embark on a 90-minute walking tour of campus with a current UK student who will give you the ins and outs of campus life. They will show you campus landmarks and points of interest on our nearly 900 acres and share with you a few of their favorite spots at UK along the way.

14

REGISTER FOR A TOUR www.uky.edu/visitorcenter It is easy to register for a tour; visit www.uky.edu/visitorcenter to sign up for an interest session and tour. Registering early has its advantages - with some advance notice (generally two to three weeks) the recruitment team for your prospective major and college can meet with you or even help you to sit in on a class. At UK, we want to make your visit as personal as possible - let us help you plan your day! V I S I T C A M P U S V I R T U A L LY www.youvisit.com/tour/uky We know it is not feasible for everyone to make a visit in person so we’ve made our campus available virtually at www.youvisit.com/tour/uky. Here you can take a virtual walking tour through campus with a few of our Wildcat Ambassadors. At each “stop” on the tour, there are supplemental videos and photos - and some 360-degree panoramic images - to give you the feel of what it is like to be on campus. LET OUR RECRUITMENT TEAM HELP YOU seeblue.com/recruiters If you’ve got questions, we have answers. Our undergraduate admissions team is dedicated to serving our prospective students. Find your admission counselor at seeblue.com/recruiters and get to know the counselor serving your area. Some of the best memories of college come from living on campus. Friends are made in a residence hall, on a walk to class or over a meal in a dining hall. Living in the heart of the Big Blue Nation is one of the best decisions you can make. Why? Because it’s all here. Classrooms, eateries, the library and your friends are steps from where you’re living and learning when you live on campus. LIVING LEARNING PROGRAM uky.edu/housing/living-learning-program UK’s Living Learning Program allows you to be part of a strong, tightknit community and puts you close to your fellow classmates, classes, professors, downtown Lexington and all the opportunities available to students on campus. Plus, students who live on campus tend to do better academically and be more involved on campus. Space is limited for specific communities, so be sure to keep track of application deadlines. Your life at UK is a collaboration of your academics, the people you meet, the places you live and the discoveries you make on campus. There are endless opportunities and ways to get involved, so don’t be afraid to dive in, find your place and make UK your own. At the University of Kentucky, we believe that your out-of-classroom experiences are an important part of your overall education and enhance the college experience. Through clubs and student organizations, you’ll meet life-long friends and make lasting memories while gaining valuable experience that will make you a more marketable candidate in today’s global economy. With more than 600 student organizations and clubs, there is an organization for everyone; and if you cannot find the one you are looking for, just grab a few friends and start it! Join an intramural athletic team. Give back through the Center for Community Outreach. Or take part in academic, social, religious, cultural, arts, media, political, activism, Greek life or other special interest groups to name a few. Help plan Homecoming by being part of the Homecoming Coalition or keep the crowd going at sporting events as part of STAT and TEAM Wildcat. The opportunities are endless! Getting involved in a student organization is not just fun and games (though they are a lot of fun); it’s about making you a happier and more successful Wildcat. Research shows that students who are involved with a student organization are more connected to their university and perform better in the classroom. 28
