M A J OR: PSYCHOLOGY HOM E TOW N : ALEXANDRIA, K Y

“I love the hands-on approach that the UK psychology department takes to learning. And I think you see this throughout this university. Every week I meet a new professor who is looking for students to help with their research. It’s all so different, too. There are just so many opportunities—researching stereotypes, sleep patterns, humor, caffeine effects, you name it. I don’t know if I would’ve had these opportunities elsewhere. It’s one thing to feel like you’re given opportunities for a great college experience. It’s another to see yourself preparing to become a professional day-by-day, to really notice the progress and feel like you’re working toward an end that’s much more than a degree. To see professors who take a personal interest in your success, and want you to be a part of their own success and discovery is unbelievable.”

“I chose UK over other top engineering schools across the country because of the sense of community and involvement. It was evident at all levels. Students on campus would come up and talk to prospective students. Professors would help you explore your interests as a high school student. And the admissions office and staff gave me the impression that they truly wanted me to come to their school. Since I’ve been on campus, I’ve really come to understand what makes UK such a great atmosphere for learning and growing as a person. I’d say the promise has been fulfilled. It’s not one of those situations where you feel like you’re ‘sold’ on a school. There is a genuine sense of belonging here, and you can feel it the moment you step on campus.”

“UK’s a big school, but when you have the right community, it’s so much smaller. I noticed it as soon as I stepped foot on campus. I’ve seen it as a peer mentor and Honors Ambassador. I’ve seen it in research opportunities and interactions with professors, even as a freshman. I’ve seen it through volunteer opportunities. I’ve seen it just strolling through campus, always running into someone I know. There just have been so many times that I’m just walking on campus and it hits me: ‘this was the best decision, this makes so much sense.’ I came to UK because I felt valued, and I felt the sense of community, and I knew that I had a wealth of resources at my disposal. I went through an extensive college search, and I took the process very seriously—so I know that this situation, the experience that UK can offer, is really rare.”

“The opportunities here at UK are unlike any that I found on other college visits. We just have so many top-notch programs, majors and organizations for student involvement that I can really customize my education and experience to be exactly what I want. “As a freshman, leaving home at the age of 17 seems very stressful, especially when home is on the other side of the globe (Egypt). But to my surprise, after not going home once throughout my first year, I didn’t feel homesick once. I really hadn’t imagined that settling in would be this easy. The year went by so quickly. That says a lot about UK. At first, it seemed like a lot of people had a hard time understanding why I would come to UK of all places. But to me, it just made sense. I’ve always been adventurous, and I wanted to try something different. I was attracted to the beauty of UK’s campus, and once I got to know people here, it quickly felt like a new home. I feel so much support here.”

Whether it’s a core curriculum that challenges students to collaborate and expand their skills across several disciplines, or faculty and staff committed to transforming lives and communities through innovative teaching, research and cutting-edge health care, there’s an unmistakable sense of progress and change on our campus. But nowhere is transformation more apparent than in the way students live on campus. UK is currently undertaking the largest and most innovative transformation of student residence halls in the country. The facilities are designed to foster community among both students and faculty. The Living Learning Program allows for social and intellectual development as students and faculty interact in immersive discipline-oriented environments. As a freshman, you can choose from more than 20 housing options, each offering unique benefits, including varied dining options and entertainment experiences. All residence halls are staffed with Resident Advisors (RAs) whose job is to ensure that students have an easy transition to college life, making sure residents feel at home, safe and engaged in the UK community. Our focus on housing is intentional and purposeful. Students do much better academically when they live on campus, where they can engage more readily with faculty and in university life.

THIS

IS

KENTUCKY’S

COLLEGE

TOWN.

Lexington is considered one of the best college towns in America. In fact, the American Institute for Economic Research ranked Lexington the ninth best small metro college town in its 2013-14 survey. Livability.com agreed, ranking Lexington a Top 5 College Town. But what makes Lexington so great? Nestled in the heart of the Bluegrass, Lexington is a bustling, thriving city with Midwestern sensibilities and small-town Southern charm.

WE

HAVE

IT

ALL.

Lexington is within a day’s drive of two-thirds of the U.S. population. Here, you will find a unique blend of rural aesthetics with cosmopolitan amenities. The heart of downtown is just a 10-minute walk from campus residence halls, while a 10-minute drive from campus leads you to acres of rolling hills, bluegrass and picturesque horse farms. Lexington is clean, safe and home to dozens of local eateries, shops and stores that make up our city’s unique vibe. Within a short walk or a quick ride on the COLT Trolley from campus, you will find dozens of top-notch restaurants, coffee shops, pizza places, live music venues, dance clubs, unique book stores, vintage CD and vinyl stores and clothing boutiques, and plenty of little shops selling all kinds of things you didn’t know you needed.

74

75

Home to dozens of local bakeries, it’s no wonder that Lexington makes up a large part of the New York Times’ Kentucky Donut Trail. And if burgers are more your speed, Tolly Ho, a UK favorite late-night diner, is home to the best burger in Kentucky and one of the Top 50 Burgers in America according to USA Today. With all of these accolades, it’s pretty easy to see why Lexington is a five-time winner of 100 Best Communities for Young People by America’s Promise Alliance. Lexington ranks highly on Forbes’ Best Places for Business and Careers and is ranked the seventh Best Midsize City for Finding a Job. Many of our students stay in Lexington after graduation because the city is a great place to live, work and raise a family.

LEXINGTON, BY

THE

NUMBERS

Lexington is also a high-tech hot spot, ranking 17th on The Atlantic’s list. Named a 2013 eCity by Google, many innovative technology-based companies and startups are located here in the heart of the Bluegrass, several in UK’s Coldstream Research Campus. Fast Company even identified Kentucky in the Top 20 of the “United States of Innovation.” in Lexington you simply need to open your To eyes. Pride in our institution and city is everywhere. There’s a spirit that you’ll feel as soon as you step foot in the Bluegrass. Trust us, you want to be here.

“My favorite place on campus is William T. Young Library or ‘Willy T.’ It’s huge, it’s beautiful, it’s comfortable. It’s one of campus’ greatest resources, and something that really separates UK. I have friends that come to visit from other schools, and they’re just awestruck when I show them the library. The library has six floors, each with a kind of different vibe. I love how you can go downstairs to the Hub for a more group-oriented, social studying environment and lab access, or the top floor if you want to remain undisturbed. I practically live at the library at times, and I’m completely okay with that. I can’t stress enough how valuable it is to have a place like Willy T. There’s something incredibly relaxing about it, which really sets you up to do great work.”

The University of Kentucky Visitor Center and its team of Wildcat Ambassadors are ready to share the “see blue.” story with you. Located in the heart of campus, the Visitor Center welcomes thousands of future Wildcats and visitors to campus every year. Start your day at UK with an information session hosted by our Visitor Center team. In this presentation, you will hear about admission, housing and dining, tuition and fees, billing information, student financial aid, scholarship opportunities and student life. Our team will also answer any questions you may have. Immediately following the session, you will embark on a 90-minute walking tour of campus with a Wildcat Ambassador - a current UK student who will show you the ins and outs of campus life. They will take you along landmarks and points of interest on our campus’ nearly 900 acres and share with you a few of their favorite spots along the way.

It is easy to register for a tour; simply visit www.uky.edu/visitorcenter to sign up for an interest session and tour. Registering early has its advantages — with some advance notice (generally two to three weeks) we can arrange for a meeting with a faculty member in your prospective major or for you to sit in on a class. At UK, we want to make your visit as personal as possible, so let us help you plan your day. We know it is not always feasible to make a visit in person, so we’ve made our campus available online at seeblue.com/tour. Here you can take a virtual walking tour through campus with a few of our Wildcat Ambassadors. At each “stop” on the tour, there are supplemental videos and photos—and some 360-degree panoramic images—to give you the feel of what it is like to be on campus. Our virtual tour includes an in-depth tour of our residence halls—some of the newest and most modern living and learning spaces in America. It also highlights one of our campus’ greatest amenities, the city of Lexington. Our state song begins, “The sun shines bright on My Old Kentucky Home.” Come take a visit and let us show you why the University of Kentucky could be a new place you can call “home.”
