Manchester is a key centre for arts, and you can see exhibitions from some of the world’s most famous artists at the city’s numerous museums, galleries and performance spaces, and entry is usually free or discounted for students.

Music and theatre Manchester and Salford have a rich history of producing famous musicians and bands. There are many music venues around the city, such as the Manchester Arena which attracts international artists, while the superb Bridgewater Hall is the home of the world-famous Hallé Orchestra. There are four major theatres to choose from, hosting plays, musicals, operas and ballets.

Sport Manchester is home to the world famous sports team, Manchester United Football Club, and their home ground Old Trafford is just five kilometres away from Peel Park campus. SportCity houses Manchester City Football Club’s Etihad Stadium, the Manchester Velodrome and the National Cycling Centre. In 2016, the University also extended its long-standing partnership with Lancashire County Cricket Club at Emirates Old Trafford. 4. 1. Home 2. Piccadilly Gardens 3. Fred Aldus Art Shop 4. Food From speciality supermarkets for Chinese and South East Asian foods in China Town, to Rusholme’s ‘curry mile’ offering Indian, South East Asian and Middle Eastern restaurants, Afro-Caribbean food in Cheetham Hill, and award-winning restaurants in the city centre, all tastes and requirements are catered for.

Religion A very broad range of faith communities are represented across the city, and both the city centre and its surrounding areas cater for all major religions. The University also offers space on-campus for religious practice.

Shopping Manchester boasts one of Europe’s largest shopping malls, The Trafford Centre, as well as a city centre lined with high street stores, designer brands and vintage stores.

Travel Manchester Piccadilly and Victoria stations can take you to London in two hours and Liverpool in 45 minutes. Manchester Airport has daily flights around the world and across the UK. 14 Facilities

FACILITIES We are continuing to invest in our facilities with brand new, state-of-the-art buildings and centres. Our aim is to make your learning relevant and meaningful, so that you are ready to enter the working world with a solid understanding of the practical concepts and equipment that you will be faced with day to day. These are just a few of the fantastic facilities you could look forward to using.

15 Facilities

Bodmer Laboratory

The newly opened ‘Megalab’, named after Sir Walter Bodmer, the British scientist behind the mapping of the human genome, is a ÂŁ3 million facility for students in the School of Environment and Life Sciences. The Megalab can hold up to 144 students at any one time and when divided into four smaller laboratories can accommodate between 36 and 44 students each.

The new lab gives students the best possible experience by providing cutting edge technical equipment, including an AV system that allows lecturers to be linked visually and audibly with some or all of the interconnected labs. A network of suspended HD televisions also enables each student to see and hear the lecturer clearly from wherever they are, creating a better learning environment for our students.

16 Facilities

Patient Simulation Suite The University has a simulation suite for students of nursing and midwifery to face real-life scenarios in a safe and supported environment. Set up just like a hospital ward, the lab contains six full body human patient simulators that mimic everything from a cold to a major heart condition.

The facility has recently been accredited as a Centre of Teaching Excellence by the North West Simulation Education Network, making Salford the only higher education institution to receive this accreditation.

17 Facilities

Human Performance Laboratory

The Human Performance Laboratory is a state-of-theart teaching and research facility for students on our sport and exercise courses, which contains an extensive range of biomechanical and physiological equipment. Premier League football stars have used the facility to test their performance after injuries, in order to determine if they are ready to get back on the pitch.

18 Facilities

Aerodynamics Facilities

For students in aeronautical engineering, the School of Computing, Science and Engineering has its very own aerodynamics laboratory and two different flight simulators, which will give you a practical experience of aircraft. The single-seated Merlin MP520-T simulator is used to support our modules. It will give you a practical experience of aircraft design that complements traditional theory and laboratory learning, so you will be able input your own aircraft parameters into the simulator before assessing flight characteristics. The Elite is a fixed-base Piper PA-34 Seneca III aircraft simulator used for flight operation

training. It is certified by the Civil Aviation Authority as an FNPT II-MCC multi-crew training environment. The Elite has two pilot seats, each with a full set of instrumentation, controls and visuals. As the pilot, you will see a projection of a terrain based on real geographic territory and specific airports in Europe. Our aerodynamics laboratory contains low speed and supersonic wind tunnels. Typical laboratory experiments our students carry out include determining the aerodynamic properties of an aerofoil section, and influence of wing, sweep on the lift and drag characteristics of a tapered wing section.

19 Facilities

The Energy House

Energy House is a full-scale house rebuilt inside a laboratory in the School of the Built Environment. It is designed to allow academics to conduct scientific research into improving energy efficiency in homes. Within the laboratory, environmental conditions such as temperature, wind and rain can be reproduced, to measure the effects much more quickly and easily.

Adelphi

20 Facilities

New

21 Facilities

The New Adelphi building is the new home of creativity on campus, for students of our arts and media and architecture courses. The space features a sound and music design suite with recording studios,

performance spaces, and a 350 capacity theatre. Design students will find everything they need to turn their ideas into reality with equipment from laser-cutters, to etching machines and screen printers.

WHERE YOU’RE C “ The fashion department is absolutely exceptional, and it shows through the student work as well as the confidence of the students. I want to say thank you to the University of Salford for being a partner to my university, and allowing me to have the opportunity to experience such a special journey. It has changed my life forever.” Logan McCage, USA, BA Fashion Design

“ I have felt supported by the University in every stage. The teachers are very approachable which is very different from the education in Colombia. I would talk to my teachers and my personal tutor as they were my friends. They are fantastic and their knowledge is unlimited. They always are there for you, so do not be afraid to speak to them. My recommendation to you is that you enjoy your time here at the University of Salford! It can be very challenging at the beginning, but you will be not alone in the journey so leave your fears at home and be ready to experience one of the most amazing adventures of your life.” Vanessa Oliveros Roncallo, Colombia, MSc International Business

“ Being a student at the University of Salford really helped me develop my global cultural awareness, gave me opportunity to travel the world with likeminded students like myself. s a student I have become very A interactive and much more confident than I used to be, trying new things that will help me develop myself and not only that to also lead workshops, presentations, speak to groups of people and be able to work in any environment happily.” Joyce Ekejiuba, Nigeria, BSc (Hons) Business and Tourism Management, MSc Human Resource Management and Development

“ It’s been an incredible three years of my life in Salford. I enjoyed every bit of it. As an international student, I didn’t feel I was away from home. This was the place where I made loads of friends, developed my skills and confidence. he staff at Salford are really T nice, they helped me to grow into a person who I am today. I owe each of them a lot. I feel the experience I gained from being a student representative, host and ambassador will definitely be to my advantage when it comes to reaching out to a much larger audience in my future employment.” Jerin James, India, BEng (Hons) Petroleum and Mechanical Engineering

“ At the beginning of my studies here, I worried that the language barrier, cultural differences, and teaching style differences would hinder me in getting accustomed to the life here. Fortunately, the university has arranged many useful activities and workshops for these problems. The language barrier is the biggest problem for me, but I find Wordscope and LEAP are very helpful. Moreover, lecturers are very friendly and empathetic; they not only gave us information about these workshops but also made their lectures easy to understand.” Jinyan Wu, China, MSc Nursing

Living costs are more reasonable in Salford and Manchester than many other cities in the UK. UKVI state that students studying in London for the majority of their course must allow £1,265 per month for living costs, but only £1,015 per month if you are studying elsewhere in the UK. Day to day expenses in the UK will probably be different to your home country, so to help you understand how much you will need to budget, we’ve provided a few examples below of everyday costs.

TRANSPORT A weekly bus ticket costs about £13, and a single ticket on the tram costs from £2.80, depending on your destination. Manchester and the surrounding areas are also served by a number of convenient and attractive cycle routes.

BOOKS AND STATIONERY

Some things to consider:

New textbooks for your course can be expensive, so make sure you use the library as much as possible, or buy books secondhand to save money. The oncampus shop sells affordable stationery.

ACCOMMODATION

CLOTHES AND GROOMING

University accommodation ranges from £87 to £139 per week, depending on site and room size.

Things like haircuts and winter coats need to be included in your budget. The best way to find a good deal is to shop around – there are plenty of affordable hairdressers and clothing shops in Manchester.

There are lots of tips for managing your money and saving cash at www.askus.salford.ac.uk/ page/moneymanagement

UTILITIES AND OTHER OUTGOINGS If you are not living in university accommodation, you’ll need to take into account the cost of bills for water, electricity, gas and internet. Also, if you have a mobile phone, you’ll need to budget for calls and texts home.

FOOD AND GROCERIES There are a range of supermarkets to suit every budget, as well as farmers markets and independent shops. Preparing fresh meals at home rather than buying pre-prepared or takeaway food will save you money. Don’t forget to budget for cleaning products and toiletries as well.

HEALTH AND FITNESS The University gym membership costs between £12-18 per month, depending on the facilities you choose to use. University sports teams will charge weekly membership fees, plus the cost of your kit.

LEISURE A cinema ticket costs about £9, and theatre tickets between £25-70. An evening meal at a restaurant with friends typically costs around £12-15, plus the cost of any drinks. There are many free events, galleries and museums in Salford and Manchester to keep you entertained on a budget though, and as a student, you are entitled to discounts in many shops, restaurants, and cinemas.

70 What our students say

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY Gabriela Pingarrón Cáredenas, Spain, MSc Biotechnology “I would advise people to come here because it’s a very good university. I’m happy because all the lecturers and all the teachers are very close to you, so they will always help you out. There are also lots of things to do like sports and clubs. I’m happy here.” Patrick Cheruiyot, Kenya, MSc Environmental Assessment and Management “My experience of studying in the UK was personally very good and I have the chance, which I am looking forward to, to come back to Salford. There’s a lot of fun within Salford, we have Old Trafford and Manchester City nearby and we have a big shopping city around Manchester. The opportunities here are endless, it’s not just learning. I played hockey at Salford and that helped me a lot to integrate when I joined the University. Within Salford there is a lot of opportunity for a new student, or any international student who is coming to Salford, to interact and to feel at home away from home.” Kin Hoe Chow, Malaysia, BSc Physiotherapy “Before I arrived in the United Kingdom, I had a lot of concerns about being independent in a foreign country with different cultures or any language barrier because English is not my mother tongue language. But, that was the past. On my first day in lectures, our lecturer started an ice-breaking event and this was my opportunity to make friends with the others on my course. All my lecturers are passionate about their teaching and happy to give feedback and advice. They are approachable and make you feel comfortable to be around them. My first year has almost come to the end, and I am looking forward to continuing my studies in the next two years and graduating as a University of Salford student.”

Tanushree Bhattacharjee, India, MSc Project Management “As part of my course, I took part in the Business Innovation Project programme, working with the National Health Service (NHS). Based on my research, the NHS has implemented my recommendations on the ‘Models of Care’ to improve their services especially in the Urgent and Emergency Care services. I would definitely recommend the Business Innovation Project programme. The experience was amazing. We had a few challenges at the beginning of the project because, being from a non- medical background, it was difficult to understand things initially but then the staff were helpful and supportive. I’ve gained more confidence from working with such a big organisation with complex structure, and it has helped to improve my management skills and knowledge.” Amelia Stephanie, Malaysia, BA Television and Radio ”Our lecturers are also practitioners, from BBC and ITV, so we learn from the experts.”

“I chose the University of Salford because I wanted to study in Manchester which is an amazing, leading and forward-looking city. Then I looked into the MSc Marketing programme and I liked the way in which is taught: four modules and an optional Business Innovation Project where students have the opportunity to choose between doing a dissertation, an internship or a placement. In my case, I chose to do an internship because I considered that it provides the necessary skills, additional to the knowledge that you learn through classes and projects, needed to succeed in businesses. A mixture of industry, education, music and football makes Manchester a unique place with cultural diversity and easy to fall in love with. I really enjoy to walk by Deansgate, a main road through the city centre of Manchester, where I can go to the mall, indulge myself and have a nice lunch in a restaurant to taste international flavours, visit the John Rylands Library, which is an amazing Victorian neo–Gothic building, and at the end of my walk maybe meet some friends for a drink too! I will really miss the people here when I graduate. I have great tutors that have helped me through this path not just by sharing their knowledge and experience but also motivating me when I did a good job and advising me how to improve when needed. Also my new friends, great people with different backgrounds, nationalities, cultures and languages people that during the program share with me the same space, goals and time.”

Logan McCage, USA, BA Fashion Design Words cannot express how amazing the past four months have been on my exchange programme in Salford. This has been the most effective learning experience I have ever had, and it has exceeded any expectations. I wasn’t expecting to have changed so much, and I love the person I have become. I have gained so many experiences and lifelong friendships that are absolutely priceless. The city as well as university life has allowed me to discover and grow into who I want to be and where I want to go. I found inspiration through the people as well as traveling. I found the confidence through the help of my tutors and being on my own. Most importantly, I have discovered pure joy. I have laughed, loved, and lived every minute of my time in England. Bashir Aswat, Programme Leader of Fashion, inspired me a year ago to come to Salford when he visited my university in Tennessee, and I am so glad he came. The fashion department is absolutely exceptional, and it shows through the student work as well as the confidence of the students. I want to say thank you to the University of Salford for being a partner to my university, and allowing me to have the opportunity to experience such a special journey. It has changed my life forever.
