SPORT Manchester is home to the world famous sports team, Manchester United Football Club, and their home ground Old Trafford is just five kilometres away from Peel Park campus. SportCity houses Manchester City Football Club’s Etihad Stadium, the Manchester Velodrome and the National Cycling Centre. In 2016, the University also extended its long-standing partnership with Lancashire County Cricket Club at Emirates Old Trafford. This partnership will enable students to undertake internships at Emirates Old Trafford throughout each cricket season. Students will also be able to use the media and broadcast facilities in the AJ Bell Players and Media Centre as part of their study programmes whilst also assisting the Club in creating additional content across its digital platforms.

CULTURE AND ART Manchester is a key centre for arts, and you can see exhibitions from some of the world’s most famous artists at the city’s numerous museums, galleries and performance spaces, and entry is usually free or discounted for students.

MUSIC AND THEATRE Manchester and Salford have a rich history of producing famous musicians and bands. There are many music venues around the city, such as the Manchester Central which attracts international artists, while the superb Bridgewater Hall is the home of the world-famous Hallé Orchestra. There are four major theatres to choose from, hosting plays, musicals, operas and ballets.

FOOD From speciality supermarkets for Chinese and South East Asian foods in China Town, to Rusholme’s ‘curry mile’ offering Indian, South East Asian and Middle Eastern restaurants, Afro-Caribbean food in Cheetham Hill, and award-winning restaurants in the city centre, all tastes and requirements are catered for.

14 OUR FACILITIES

OUR FACILITIES We are continuing to invest in our facilities with state-of-the-art buildings and centres. Your learning will be relevant and meaningful, so that you are ready to enter the working world with a solid understanding of the practical concepts and equipment that you will be faced with day to day. These are just a few of the fantastic facilities you could look forward to using.

PATIENT SIMULATION SUITE The University has a simulation suite for students to face real-life scenarios in a safe and supported environment. Set up just like a hospital ward, the lab contains six full body human patient simulators that mimic everything from a cold to a major heart condition.

OUR FACILITIES

The facility has been accredited as a Centre of Teaching Excellence by the North West Simulation Education Network, making Salford the first higher education institution to receive this accreditation.

15

16 OUR FACILITIES

BODMER LABORATORY The newly opened ‘Bodmer Lab’, named after Sir Walter Bodmer - the British scientist behind the mapping of the human genome, is a £3 million facility for students in the School of Environment and Life Sciences. The Bodmer Lab can hold up to 144 students at any one time and when divided into four smaller laboratories can accommodate between 36 and 44 students each. The lab gives our students the best possible experience by providing cutting edge technical equipment, including an AV system that allows lecturers to be linked visually and audibly with some or all of the interconnected labs. A network of suspended HD televisions also enables each student to see and hear the lecturer clearly from wherever they are, creating an excellent learning environment.

The Human Performance Laboratory is a state-of-the art teaching and research facility for students on our sport and exercise courses, which contains an extensive range of biomechanical and physiological equipment. A range of elite athletes have used the facility to test their performance after injuries, in order to determine if they are ready to get back on the pitch.

HUMAN PERFORMANCE LABORATORY

18 OUR FACILITIES

THE ENERGY HOUSE The Energy House is a full-scale house rebuilt inside a laboratory in the School of the Built Environment. It is designed so that research can be conducted into improving energy efficiency in homes. Within the laboratory, environmental conditions such as temperature, wind and rain can be reproduced, to measure the effects much more quickly and accurately.

AERODYNAMICS LABORATORY

The single-seated Merlin MP520-T simulator is used to support our modules. It will give you a practical experience of aircraft design that complements traditional theory and laboratory learning, so you will be able to input your own aircraft parameters into the simulator before assessing flight characteristics.

The Elite is a fixed-base Piper PA-34 Seneca III aircraft simulator used for flight operation training. It is certified by the Civil Aviation Authority as an FNPT II-MCC multi-crew training environment. The Elite has two pilot seats, each with a full set of instrumentation, controls and visuals. As the pilot, you will see a projection of a terrain based on real geographic territory and specific airports in Europe. Our aerodynamics laboratory contains low speed and supersonic wind tunnels. Typical laboratory experiments our students carry out include determining the aerodynamic properties of an aerofoil section, and influence of wing, sweep on the lift and drag characteristics of a tapered wing section.

OUR FACILITIES

For students in aeronautical engineering, the School of Computing, Science and Engineering has its very own aerodynamics laboratory and two different flight simulators, which will give you a practical experience of aircraft.

19

68 IMPORTANT NOTICES

IMPORTANT NOTICES Information you should be aware of when applying to study with us. This prospectus gives you a broad overview of the types of courses and facilities we offer and all content is correct at the time of going to print (September 2017). We print the prospectus as far in advance of the start of the academic year as possible, to give you plenty of time to consider your options. However, this means that changes to the prospectus content will inevitably arise. This prospectus is therefore not intended to provide a definitive statement of the courses and facilities available at the University of Salford. As you would expect we have a Privacy and Cookies Policy which applies to the use of our website and this can be found at www.infogov.salford.ac.uk/privacy Before deciding to apply, please go to our website for the most up-to-date and detailed course information: www.salford.ac.uk/course-finder. Alternatively, contact us on +44 (0)161 295 4545 or enquiries@salford.ac.uk We reserve the right to change the information in this prospectus at any time. Reasons for such changes include, for example: / our need to withdraw or change a course or module because we have insufficient student numbers or funding to run it viably or to the required standard. / we have to respond to unforeseen circumstances outside our control (such as requirements of any governmental, regulatory or professional bodies or the introduction of any new or modified laws or regulations) / we think changes are desirable to improve or maintain quality / we think the changes will enhance the student experience or be otherwise beneficial to students.

The University will give applicants/students as much notice as possible of any withdrawal or change to courses or modules and will take all reasonable steps to minimise any disruption. Students who are adversely affected by any change which was not foreseeable will have the right to switch courses or, in the absence of suitable alternatives, withdraw from their course. The University will, so far as it is able, assist students with the practicalities of switching where they are part way through their studies. Some courses may have additional fees associated with them, for example for specific materials or field trips. We won’t know the exact amount of these additional fees until closer to the time that they are required. Where appropriate, we have therefore provided an indication of the additional fees required based on costs available at the time of going to print (September 2017). Please go to our website for the most up-to-date and detailed information: www.salford.ac.uk/course-finder The University makes every effort to ensure that all changes made by the University to courses and facilities are detailed on the University’s website as soon as is reasonably practical. In the event of any inconsistencies between information in this prospectus and on the website, information held on the website will prevail. The University makes every effort to assist students in finding a placement where this is part of their course or programme. Employers have a limited number of placements available and the University cannot guarantee that students will have access to the placement of their choice. Where students are responsible for obtaining a placement themselves, this is clearly outlined in the detailed information found on the relevant course webpage. The course information in this prospectus directs you to those pages.

Following your application for a particular course, you will receive further information from the University detailing the terms and conditions which govern the relationship between you and the University. Students are required to comply with the University’s academic and other regulations, rules and procedures. The personal information provided by you as both an applicant and as a registered student will be held and processed by the University in accordance with its notification to the Information Commissioner and as required by the Data Protection Act 1998.

70 WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY

LOGAN MCCAGE / USA / BA (HONS) FASHION DESIGN Words cannot express how amazing the past four months have been on my exchange programme in Salford. This has been the most effective learning experience I have ever had, and it has exceeded any expectations. I wasn’t expecting to have changed so much, and I love the person I have become. I have gained so many experiences and lifelong friendships that are absolutely priceless. The city as well as university life has allowed me to discover and grow into who I want to be and where I want to go. I found inspiration through the people as well as traveling. I found the confidence through the help of my tutors and being on my own. Most importantly, I have discovered pure joy. I have laughed, loved, and lived every minute of my time in England. Bashir Aswat, Programme Leader of Fashion, inspired me a year ago to come to Salford when he visited my university in Tennessee, and I am so glad he came. The fashion department is absolutely exceptional, and it shows through the student work as well as the confidence of the students. I want to say thank you to the University of Salford for being a partner to my university, and allowing me to have the opportunity to experience such a special journey. It has changed my life forever.

My first year has almost come to the end, and I am looking forward to continuing my studies in the next two years and graduating as a University of Salford student.” TANUSHREE BHATTACHARJEE / INDIA / MSC PROJECT MANAGEMENT “As part of my course, I took part in the Business Innovation Project programme, working with the National Health Service (NHS). Based on my research, the NHS has implemented my recommendations on the ‘Models of Care’ to improve their services especially in the Urgent and Emergency Care services. I would definitely recommend the Business Innovation Project programme. The experience was amazing. We had a few challenges at the beginning of the project because, being from a non-medical background, it was difficult to understand things initially but then the staff were helpful and supportive. I’ve gained more confidence from working with such a big organisation with complex structure, and it has helped to improve my management skills and knowledge.” GABRIELA PINGARRÓN CÁREDENAS / SPAIN / MSC BIOTECHNOLOGY “I would advise people to come here because it’s a very good university. I’m happy because all the lecturers and all the teachers are very close to you, so they will always help you out. There are also lots of things to do like sports and clubs. I’m happy here.”

AMELIA STEPHANIE / MALAYSIA / BA (HONS) TELEVISION AND RADIO ”Our lecturers are also practitioners, from BBC and ITV, so we learn from the experts.”

LIZETTE GEORGINA BRICENO VERDUZCO / MEXICO / MSC MARKETING “I chose the University of Salford because I wanted to study in Manchester which is an amazing, leading and forward-looking city. Then I looked into the MSc Marketing programme and I liked the way in which it is taught: four modules and an optional Business Innovation project where students have the opportunity to choose between doing a dissertation, an internship or a placement. In my case, I chose to do an internship because I considered that it provides the necessary skills, additional to the knowledge that you learn through classes and projects, needed to succeed in businesses. A mixture of industry, education, music and football makes Manchester a unique place with cultural diversity and easy to fall in love with. I really enjoy to walk by Deansgate, a main road through the city centre of Manchester, where I can go to the mall, indulge myself and have a nice lunch in a restaurant to taste international flavours, visit the John Rylands Library, which is an amazing Victorian neo–Gothic building, and at the end of my walk maybe meet some friends for a drink too! I will really miss the people here when I graduate. I have great tutors that have helped me through this path not just by sharing their knowledge and experience but also motivating me when I did a good job and advising me how to improve when needed. Also my new friends, great people with different backgrounds, nationalities, cultures and languages people that during the program share with me the same space, goals and time.” PATRICK CHERUIYOT / KENYA / MSC ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT AND MANAGEMENT “My experience of studying in the UK was personally very good and I have the chance, which I am looking forward to, to come back to Salford. There’s a lot of fun within Salford, we have Old Trafford and Manchester City nearby and we have a big shopping city around Manchester. The opportunities here are endless, it’s not just learning. I played hockey at Salford and that helped me a lot to integrate when I joined the University. Within Salford there is a lot of opportunities for a new student, or any international student who is coming to Salford, to interact and to feel at home away from home.”

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY

KIN HOE CHOW / MALAYSIA / BSC PHYSIOTHERAPY “Before I arrived in the United Kingdom, I had a lot of concerns about being independent in a foreign country with different cultures or any language barrier because English is not my mother tongue language. But, that was the past. On my first day in lectures, our lecturer started an ice-breaking event and this was my opportunity to make friends with the others on my course. All my lecturers are passionate about their teaching and happy to give feedback and advice. They are approachable and make you feel comfortable to be around them.
