Indeed, the term “hidden gem” was bandied about more often than not. Well, being a hidden gem is not a viable long-term strategy—so I challenged the USF community to work with me to better articulate and share our story. This challenge, then, evolved into the second objective of our 2014–19 strategic plan: “Enhance the reputation and brand awareness of USF as a leading private Midwestern university with excellent student educational outcomes inspired by and infused with our Catholic heritage and Franciscan tradition.”*

Four days later, on Nov. 24, the University of St. Francis sponsored the annual Light Up the Holidays parade in downtown Joliet, hosted by the Joliet City Center Partnership. Families from across the city came together to celebrate the start of the holiday season. USF’s mascot, Bernie the St. Bernard, served as grand marshal and led the parade, followed by dozens of USF faculty and staff who handed out candy to the paradegoers. “The holidays are a special time for our university and we are happy to celebrate this season with our community,” said USF President Arvid Johnson.

Engaging Mind & Spirit Correction: The feature story in the last issue of this magazine indicated that the first music program was established at USF in 2004. Although it was the first program at “USF,” it was not the first music program for “St. Francis.” According to the USF Archivist Gloria Hendrickson, there was a department of music from 1930–1979. A Bachelor of Music degree was listed in the school catalog, and the major fell under Fine Arts from 1960–1980. It then became a minor from 1980–1999. The music program was discontinued altogether from 2000–2004, until Dr. Patrick Brannon reinstated it that year. Thanks to the former music major who reached out with this correction!

Every bit helps these very deserving men and women,” he commented.

We Teach Students to Network Through Our Mentoring Program The Student-Alumni Mentoring Program, created in 2011 by alumni director Aubrey Knight ’04, ’07, and her thenstudent worker Kayla Madej ’15, was recognized at a national conference and won the University of St. Francis Innovation Award in 2015. Known simply as “SAM,” the student and alumni mentoring program pairs current student mentees with alums working in their field of study. The partners keep in touch throughout the year, with mentors offering career guidance, networking assistance, and support. In its sixth year with 134 participants, the program has serviced more than 500 students and alumni. Many mentoring pairs keep in contact long after the student graduates, and alumni often hire our students for internships and jobs. Visit stfrancis.edu/sam.

WE CARVE THE PATHWAY TO A MASTER'S DEGREE IN EDUCATION THROUGH PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT The Regional Education Academy for Leadership (REAL) within USF's College of Education was established to provide educators with professional development opportunities. REAL offers graduate level courses and the option to earn a variety of endorsements through a flexible program with teacher-friendly tuition. The rigorous coursework and research-based instructional strategies that are required of all advanced degree programs in the College of Education are embedded within each REAL course. This provides the framework for what differentiates USF from other institutions— the opportunity for educators to earn 18 hours of graduate credit

WE HAVE A FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR Associate Professor Dr. Alicia McLaughlin was awarded a 2017 Fulbright Scholarship this summer to do research at the University of Guyana in Guyana, South America. McLaughlin has been teaching for nine years in the bachelor’s and master’s social work programs at USF and is the first USF professor to receive this honor. From Guyana, she blogged that her students are “very motivated, hard-working, and extremely intelligent. It’s hard to believe that these are undergraduate social work students. I feel as if I’m teaching master’s level students.” She also reported in late November that she received another Fulbright Grant, which allowed her to travel from Guyana to Jamaica for a speaking program in Kingston. There, social service providers came to hear McLaughlin talk about intense topics such as suicide, mental health stigma, pedophilia and trauma. McLaughlin is due back to USF for the spring semester.

OUR CAREER SUCCESS CENTER HELPS STUDENTS AND ALUMNI GET JOBS 98% of recent USF graduates are employed or in graduate school, the majority are working in their field of study, and the USF Career Success Center helps to make it all possible! The Career Success Center serves both students and alumni. Job seekers are offered career management counseling, career advising, resume reviews and mock interviews. The center utilizes the Optimal Resume program and assessments such as the Strong Interest Inventory, StrengthsQuest and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. The center hosts an on-campus career and internship fair, a part-time job and internship fair and finds opportunities for job seekers to attend off-campus job fairs and recruiting events. The center exposed students and alumni to 800 job openings and internships last year through its job boards.

Our Symphony Orchestra’s Mission is More than Music The Joliet Symphony Orchestra launched its Music on a Mission program, which serves the community through music. In addition to holding toy and food drives at concerts, JSO members perform free concerts at local establishments like the Joliet Public Library or Our Lady of Angels nursing home, and provide musical entertainment for local events like the Cornerstone Services’ annual art show. They also provide music for dinner guests at St. Francis Serves—a USF event where residents from Daybreak Shelter come to campus for dinner and entertainment. As this magazine is being printed, the JSO will be performing a free children's concert with an “instrument petting zoo,” to teach Joliet children about music and the orchestra. In addition to all of this, the JSO hosts annual composition and concerto competitions. The winning composition is performed by the orchestra in winter and concerto winners get to perform with the orchestra in spring. “We definitely try to use our talents to give back to the community,” says Alex Dee, JSO conductor and Music & Performing Arts Department chair.

Then they can enter the MBA program, starting with four certificate program courses at $399 per credit hour. If they then choose to do so, they can take five more classes to finish up with an MBA or other master's degree. “Total cost would only be $16,600—it’s an amazing deal!” says COBHA’s Jeanne Washburn. But mostly, the benefit for students comes in the form of time. Through this program, an undergrad only needs to stay one additional year with a full-time schedule in order to receive the advanced degree.

WE’RE MILITARY FRIENDLY The University of St. Francis has made a strong commitment to recruit and serve veterans and has been nationally recognized for its efforts. Since 2000, 135 veterans have graduated from USF. Another 54 veterans, spouses and dependents are currently enrolled in USF’s undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and their unique perspective as veterans adds to the educational perspective of all students in the classroom. USF provides several military service member programs including discounts and veteran mentor programs for qualifying students. A 15% veteran/military discount program is available to veterans and active military who have exhausted their VA benefits and includes spouses of active duty military personnel not eligible for VA benefits. This discount is also extended to drilling members of the National Guard/Reserves and active duty military personnel and employees of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The “Coffee, Tea and Conversations” program, started by the International Programs Office (IPO), helps our international students with best practices in the area of language learning. All international students, particularly those in their first semester and those in USF’s intensive English (ELAP) program, are encouraged to attend regularly. At the weekly gathering, teas from around the world and dark-roasted coffee are served while students get the opportunity to practice their English and observe social interactions between American and international students. “Eventually their confidence grows, and they begin the slow process of socializing in English,” says Dr. Jura Harris of the IPO Office. As the semester progresses, participation decreases, and that’s exactly the desired result. “With our encouragement, students begin to find other groups or clubs to belong to, and begin to make new friends outside their cultural group. We consider this as a natural transition when international students begin to identify as an active member of the University of St. Francis community at large,” said Harris.

We Nurture Future Teachers’ Hearts through the Chrysalis Retreat The College of Education’s Chrysalis experience is a required weekend retreat for undergraduate students who major in education. Students attend during the fall semester of their third year at the onset of their upper division education courses. Chrysalis is grounded in our Franciscan roots with an emphasis on our relationship with ourselves, others, the Earth, and God. The College of Education aspires to prepare competent and caring educators who truly make a difference. To that end, Chrysalis provides an opportunity for students to affirm their desire to be a teacher, deepen their relationship with themselves and others, practice interpersonal skills that are critical for educators, and explore what makes a teacher truly transformational. Upon returning from the retreat students feel connected to COE faculty and peers and are genuinely inspired to continue their journey to become a professional educator.

The IBA provides a free research workshop each year, at which students learn how they can get involved in research projects being conducted by mathematics and biology faculty around the country. that attended, along with her constant smile and heartfelt enthusiasm, was something that made us feel a true part of the St. Francis family,” recalled Bill Bellah. The Patricia Getson Endowed Scholarship will be awarded yearly

to two junior students who have a financial need and demonstrate a strong commitment to the university and the community it serves. They will also be students who live the Franciscan mission on a daily basis, just like Pat did.

In a show of gratitude for the opportunities they’ve experienced at USF, donor contributions totaled $27,061.
