A dynamic model of growth phases and survival in international business-tobusiness new ventures: The moderating effect of desicion-making logic by Peter Gabrielsson with Mika Gabrielsson in Industrial Marketing Management. Non-linear relationship between industrial service offering and sales growth: the moderating role of network capabilities by Marko Kohtamäki, Vincit Parida and Joakim Vincent with Jukka Partanen in Industrial Marketing Management. Theatre translation as performance by Sirkku Aaltonen in TARGET - International Journal of Translation Studies. In 2008, the Finnish National Theatre produced the Lebanese/Canadian playwright Wajdi Mouawad’s tragic play Incendies in Finnish. The advertisements, newspaper pre-reviews and reviews named Reita Lounatvuori, a well-known Finnish theatre translator, as the author of the translation. However, several other people were also involved in the translation process before Mouawad’s text reached the stage. – I offer an empirical study of the process of translation of Incendies into Finnish to argue that translations on the thatre are not objects of art but products of art worlds, bearing the fingerprints of many subjectivities, Aaltonen tells. – To support my argument, I draw on Actor-Network Theory, as recently developed in the context of translation sociology and on Performance Studies, following Richard Schechner’s articulation of the concept of performance. I apply these models to the specific context of the thaetre, the specific genre of drama, and the process of translating one play. This interdisciplinary exploratory study argues for the relevance of Schener’s analytical model, and more broadly of Performance Studies, to the analysis of interlingual translation processes.

7 Researcher in the Spotlight Narashima Boopathi Sivasubramanian, Doctoral student from Department of Management received ”The Best Paper” award at the International Conference on Global Business, Economics, Finance and Social Sciences which was held on January 4–5th in Chennai, India. The paper was titled ”A detailed comparison of Finland and India trough Hofstede & GLOBE study”. – Paper analyses differences and similarities between Finnish and Indian national cultures of organizations through Hofstede and GLOBE study, and discusses how these differences affect organizational culture and leadership practices, Sivasubramanian tells. Sivasubramanian’s doctoral thesis aims at testing the theory of Cultural intelligence Quotient (CQ). Dissertation looks at CQ level of Finnish leaders who are leading business in India and investigates how CQ is used by them in overcoming crosscultural challenges. – It’s very important to know culture in the country where you do business and lead people. For example, in India, religion impacts every step of your life, including business and its practises, Sivasubramanian explains. India as a research context was chosen not only because of the researche’s ethnical background – Sivasubramanian is from the state of Tamil Nadu, South India – but also because it is very large and diverse country, where, for example, even every state has its own language, tradition and culture which is different from the other states. – Leading business in country like this is very challenging and requires high level of cultural sensitivity. – In Finland everything is very well organized, but in India things are more complex. Networking and personal relationships have a huge role when selecting business partner. You build the trust first and only then comes business. Sivasubramanian has been in Finland 8 years and considers himself to be well adapted to the Finnish way of life. Especially he enjoys the peaceful environment in Finland. Sivasubramanian starts the interviews with Finnish business leaders for his dissertation in this spring and expects to graduate in the year 2015. NOVEMBER FEBRUARY 2013 2014

Foundation for Economic Education has granted 4th of December grants for 13 university’s researchers, altogether 78 000 € Euthanasia in societal decision-making: Metadeliberation on the right to authorize or prohibit assisted dying in Finland, assistant professor Harri Raisio and his research team, Kone Foundation, 62 596 € REBUS – Towards relational business practices, The FIMECC programme, Global Networks – The goal of the programme is to increase compentitiveness of the Finnish metals and engineering cluster by executing cross-disciplinary research and development activities in close collaboration with a wide array of international top universities, tell professor Jukka Vesalainen, the principal coordinator of the project. The programme aims at making scientific breakthroughs in the area of networks and business ecosystems. – The particular focus is on those relational business practices that are needed to act as a member in as well as to take advantage of various networks. The programme challenges the participating firms to take major leaps in developing these practises as well as fundamentally change their underlying mindsets of managerial behavior, Vesalainen tells. All 22 perticipating firms have strongly connected the program with theit main growth and development strategies. Seven Finnish research institutions are committed to explore relational business practices with them. The REBUS programme is also highly international and there are collaboration activities with 18 international universities. The total programme budget is over 40M€ and its duration is five years. Budget of the University of Vaasa is 3 M€.

13.12.2013 Minna-Maarit Jaskari, Marketing Teaching the future marketers through experiental client-based projects. Marketing knowledge and skills in the context of early phases of service and product development – The aim is to increase our understanding of the managerial challenges in teaching marketing knowledge and skills through experiental client-based projects in the context of the fuzzy front end, Jaskari tells. Jaskari creates comprehensive model of experiental client-based teaching. The model shets light on teaching process and the challenges faced in different phases of it. – Managing team composition, deciding on challenge level and balancing between critical and ceative suppot processes are critical stages for the course management. Tensions within these critical stages illustrate the variety of possible project processes and outcomes, says Jaskari. Seven typical project paths that students undergo and critical stages within these paths are identified. A model incorporating a business process, a creative process, student outputs and the experiental learning cycle is created for ensuring the final outcome. The findings are integrated to the framework of cunstructive alignment in order to produce a contextualized and extended understanding of the challenges in managing experiental client-based teaching. The study contributes mainly to marketing education literature.

The research summarizes the results of the use of financial derivatives in managing electricity market risks. – We examine the economic nature of different derivative contracts, and based on that, we describe and test their optimal use in electricity risk management, researchers explain. The risk management problem is also considered from the demand-side point of view. How much electricity should a retail company procure in advance? What is the risk profile of an electricity generation company that relies on natural gas? Which financial derivatives are required to offset price and volume risks, if they materialize at the same time? To answer these questions, researchers suggest intuitive solutions based on statistical theory, simulation, operations research, and most important, economic modeling. – The key is to match the payoff profiles of different financial derivatives to the economic profiles of different electricity companies. Since the business models in the industry are found to be quite dissimilar, we conclude that the risk management solutions have to be company specific, researchers tell. Research Group in Focus – Practices and Discourses of Management The research conducted by this research group combines the approaches and methods of researchers in the fields of administrative sciences, and language and communication studies. Consequently this research stands for two strategic research topics of the University of Vaasa, management and multilingualism, with the aim of combining these in actual research projects. – We are emphasizing the significance of communication and languages in the management of different organizations. This emphasis is based on firm belief that interaction and various consultative situations are today much more important in management than giving orders and rules and regulations, tells professor Esa Hyyryläinen, leader of the research group. Important areas of research for the group include the study of public administration. blurring the sectors of public and private, managerial ethics, communication in specialized sectors, media, and various multilingual practices in society and organizations. Methodologically the emphasis of the research group is on the use of discourse analysis, narratives, and comparative methods. Members of the research group have a long and succesful history of applying these methods to the study of different aspects of management. Currently there are several projects with some form of methodological novelty. Q-methogology and configurational comparative methods are among those, both representing multi-method approaches.

PhD Janne Äijö has been nominated as a professor of finance and accounting starting at 1.1.2014. PhD Katri Karjalainen has been appointed as the project leader in the Institute of Multilingualism of the University of Vaasa and Åbo Akademi. University granted in the anniversary ceremony of the University of Vaasa Research Act of the Year 2013 award to professor Petri Helo, Research group leader of the Network Value Systems (with professor Marko Kohtamäki). University Teacher Minna-Maarit Jaskari received Teaching Act of the Year 2013 award in the same ceremony.

14 The Graduate School Announces The Graduate School of the University of Vaasa admits only the most motivated, talented and research-oriented students to do its doctoral programmes. The students apply for admission directly to the doctoral programmes. The application period opens in March, the deadline is 30th of April.
Scholarships and Doctoral Students Positions The Graduate School grants scholarships for the year 2014–2015. There are 9–10 scholarships for writing doctoral thesis. All scholarships shall be paid in 12 monthly installments during academic year 1.8.2014–31.7.2015. The application deadline is March 21st. The Graduate School has four doctoral student’s positions. The doctoral students will be employed for a fixed term of 2 years, starting August 2014. The position will be located at the faculty where the applicant is enrolled as a doctoral student. The application deadline is also March 21st.
