WHAT IS PUBLIC COMMUNICATION? Public communication is the practice of creating and delivering relevant, creative, and responsible messages to serve the needs of a community or organization. UVM public communication graduates are well-prepared for careers in marketing, public relations, community organizing, event planning, and activist journalism, as well as in video, audio, graphic, and social media.
WHY PUBLIC COMMUNICATION AT UVM? •
At UVM, you will receive hands-on, advanced communication training along with coursework related to community development. This unique combination empowers students to use a variety of traditional and new media platforms to benefit the public interest.
• Personalize your education by selecting a concentration where you can hone communication skills that matter most to you. Concentrations include Communication Design, Community Media and Journalism, and Strategic Communication. • Work on real-world projects. All public communication majors take a Capstone course, which pairs student teams with non-profit and municipal community partners to develop professional-level communications strategies and materials. The course adds valuable experience to porfolios and resumes. • Take internships for credit. Tap into an expansive network of alumni and partners to gain relevant experience that can jumpstart your future career.

Vermont Attorney General TJ Donovan teaches public communication students in the Consumer Assistance Program, a joint program with the state of Vermont to help Vermonters resolve conflicts with businesses and a variety of consumer protection issues. Students can earn up to six credits through the program, which offers a crash course in conflict resolution, communications, advocacy and public policy.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Public communication major and artist Andrew Salerno interns at Sticky Brand, a Burlington-based sticker and design company founded by UVM alums. With a concentration in visual design, Andrew has been able to use his internship to hone skills in graphic design, illustration, print production and marketing. When he’s not working or in class, he can be found at UVM’s campus radio station, WRUV FM where he serves as the WRUV social media director.

ACCELERATED PROGRAM UVM ACCELERATED MASTER OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION
Mariah McGough ’17 was a high school senior in the town neighboring Newtown, Connecticut when the unthinkable massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School occurred. Now a communications assosicate for Everytown for Gun Safety, a New York Citybased nonprofit, she works with volunteers and families touched by gun violence, helping them share their personal stories with the media in the hopes of affecting change in gun violence legislation. McGough credits her public communication major at UVM, and in particular a course on socially responsible marketing, as a key influence in her nonprofit career.
