MICROBIOLOGY

WHAT IS MICROBIOLOGY? Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, archaea, fungi and protozoa. Microbiology students learn about the biochemistry, physiology, cell biology, ecology, evolution and clinical aspects of microbes, gaining skills that can be applied in a wide range of fields – from drug discovery and outbreak prevention to food technology or even forensic science.

WHY MICROBIOLOGY AT UVM? • The Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics is unique at UVM because it exists within two colleges: the Robert Larner College of Medicine and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. This enables students studying microbiology the unique opportunity to work with faculty from diverse departments and at the UVM Medical Center, the only academic medical center in Vermont, located on the UVM campus. • Hands-on classroom laboratory experiences, internships and research opportunities, providing students with a strong foundation to go on to an advanced degree in medicine, biotechnology, microbiology and biochemistry, among others. • Ability to get involved in cutting-edge research projects in biomedical research, including in laboratories focused on vaccines, parasitic diseases, human immunology, microbial genetics and HIV. Additional research opportunities in animal science, plant biology and food science research laboratories. • Faculty have a deep commitment to undergraduate advising, guiding students through their academic pathways and assisting with post-graduate plans. • Excellent track record of graduates’ admittance into top-notch medical and graduate schools, as well as job placements.
