MICROBIOLOGY
WHAT IS MICROBIOLOGY? Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, archaea, fungi and protozoa. Microbiology students learn about the biochemistry, physiology, cell biology, ecology, evolution and clinical aspects of microbes, gaining skills that can be applied in a wide range of fields – from drug discovery and outbreak prevention to food technology or even forensic science.
WHY MICROBIOLOGY AT UVM? • The Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics is unique at UVM because it exists within two colleges: the Robert Larner College of Medicine and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. This enables students studying microbiology the unique opportunity to work with faculty from diverse departments and at the UVM Medical Center, the only academic medical center in Vermont, located on the UVM campus. • Hands-on classroom laboratory experiences, internships and research opportunities, providing students with a strong foundation to go on to an advanced degree in medicine, biotechnology, microbiology and biochemistry, among others. • Ability to get involved in cutting-edge research projects in biomedical research, including in laboratories focused on vaccines, parasitic diseases, human immunology, microbial genetics and HIV. Additional research opportunities in animal science, plant biology and food science research laboratories. • Faculty have a deep commitment to undergraduate advising, guiding students through their academic pathways and assisting with post-graduate plans. • Excellent track record of graduates’ admittance into top-notch medical and graduate schools, as well as job placements.

When he’s not studying or in class, microbiology major Miles Danis spends much of his time at the UVM Medical Center where he serves as a mental health technician working with psychiatric patients in the Emergency Department. He first got his start in the department as part of UVM’s Emergency Medicine Research Associate Program, which provides training and support for students who help enroll patients in ongoing clinical trial research. Both experiences have prepared him well – he’s headed to Drexel University after graduation to become a physician assistant.

ALUMNI IN ACTION “The advising is second to none in the Microbiology and Molecular Genetics program at UVM. I owe a lot to the mentors who guided me.” - Anna Lidofsky ‘14, UVM Medical Student Burlington native Anna Lidofsky ’14 is finishing her last year of medical school at UVM’s Larner College of Medicine. As an undergraduate, she interned at the L.A. County Department of Public Health helping with the implementation of a new policy for tuberculosis screening in L.A. public schools. After receiving her B.S. in microbiology, she was a predoctoral research fellow working on HIV-related projects at Massachusetts General Hospital before applying to medical school.
