SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPE BS H O R T I C U LT U R E WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPE H O R T I C U LT U R E ? Sustainable landscape horticulture combines the science, beauty and sustainability of plants. As human-impacted land use changes the landscapes around us, there is a growing need for professionals who can develop sustainable solutions for both natural and built environments. From designing urban parks to community gardens, sustainable landscape horticulturalists are experts in environmental design for the modern world.
WHY SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPE H O R T I C U LT U R E A T U V M ? • Based in the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences, students benefit from a flexible, interdisciplinary curriculum that spans plant biology, ecology, soil science, landscape design, art, and business management. • Hands-on courses and internships at UVM’s 97-acre Horticulture Research & Education Center, Catamount Farm, UVM Greenhouse, campus gardens and beehives. • Opportunities to conduct undergraduate research with faculty working at the forefront of today’s most pressing ecological problems while receiving academic credit or working as a paid assistant. • Vermont’s diverse working landscape, commitment to sustainability and thriving local networks make UVM an ideal place to study sustainable landscape horticulture. • Gain critical skills for a sustainable future. Our graduates land rewarding careers as educators, environmental consultants, landscape design firms, land management companies, municipal parks and recreation agencies, and as entrepreneurial business owners.
Alexandra Melian ‘19 spent a summer as a Lyman Wood intern caring for the campus teaching gardens surrounding Jeffords Hall. The gardens support a number of courses at UVM and include a variety of vegetables, ornamental plants, pollinator gardens and even a giant pumpkin patch.
