BIOCHEMISTRY

WHAT IS BIOCHEMISTRY? Biochemists study the molecular interactions that guide many processes involved in living organisms. This involves exploring the underlying chemical and physical properties of organisms. Thanks to scientific advances in understanding the human genome and other discoveries describing the molecular basis of life, tremendous opportunities await biochemists.

WHY BIOCHEMISTRY AT UVM? • As a cross-college program, UVM’s biochemistry program draws expertise from several departments across campus providing students an interdisciplinary foundation in chemistry, biology and biochemistry. • Biochemistry majors have access to a specialized introductory curriculum offering more individualized instruction and smaller class sizes compared to general introductory science courses at UVM. • Opportunities to get involved in cutting-edge research throughout campus and at the Robert Larner College of Medicine, the only academic medical center in Vermont. This provides the unique opportunity to perform clinically-relevant research under the mentorship of faculty advisors. • Hands-on classroom laboratory experiences, internships and research opportunities provide students with a strong foundation to go on to an advanced degree in medicine, biochemistry, or pharmacology, among others. • Faculty have a deep commitment to undergraduate advising, guiding students through their academic pathways, research projects and internships, and assisting with post-graduate plans.

BIOCHEMISTRY

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Growing up in Lithuania, Ona Ambrozaite ‘20 was fascinated by the microscopic world. As a biochemistry major at UVM, she particpiated in an Amgen Scholars internship conducting research at Kyoto University in Japan. The experience triggered her interest in studying ways to investigate the life cycle of HIV using her knowledge of organic synthesis, biology-chemistry interface and supramolecular structures. When she’s not in the lab, she can be found creating illustrations inspired by the woods, gardens and nature of Lithuania.

ALUMNI IN ACTION “UVM gave me everything I need to become a doctor.”

- Niveditha Badrinarayanan ‘19, UVM Medical Student

Niveditha Badrinarayanan ‘19 knew her path after shadowing a physician in high school. Research opportunities and UVM’s Larner College of Medicine, where she’s currently a first year medical student, drew her to UVM from Chennai, India. In her four years, the biochemistry major and pharmacology minor worked in a lab examining human mesothelioma; plus, she was a resident advisor, trained tutors at the Career Center, and volunteered in pediatrics, which earned her an award from the Mosaic Center for Students of Color.
