BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE
WHAT IS BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE? Biological science is the study of life in all its forms and at all its levels. Biological scientists work to further human understanding of living things — their bodies, behaviors, interactions, genetics, histories and futures — so that we might better appreciate, utilize, heal, and protect.
WHY BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE AT UVM? • UVM’s B.S. in Biological Science is flexible and rigorous, offering the largest breadth of advanced study topics and research opportunities of any life science major on campus. •
As a cross-college program, the biological science major draws expertise from 18 departments and five colleges across campus providing students an interdisciplinary foundation in biology, genetics, ecology, evolution, cell biology and molecular biology.
• Our outstanding faculty are both professors and accomplished researchers. Students can earn credit for conducting biologically-focused research projects with close mentorship from faculty advisors. • Graduates are well-prepared to go on to earn advanced degrees in biology, medicine, veterinary sciences, and many others. Our program has an excellent track record of graduates’ admittance into top-notch medical & graduate schools.
Biological science major Natalia Swack works alongside fellow undergraduates and Prof. Laura May-Collado using photo identification techniques to identify dolphins in Bocas del Toro, Panama. These data will be used to calculate the reproductive and calf mortality rate of the population.

BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Biological science major James Whitley came to UVM with his eyes on medical school. He has gained impactful and relevant experience shadowing physicians at the UVM Medical Center as a member of UVM’s Premedical Enhancement Program, which pairs students with mentor physicians.
STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES CALS DISTINGUISHED UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROGRAM
He’s been involved in a number of research projects, including in Dr. Jana Kraft’s animal science lab where he is studying lipid metabolism as a model system to understand some aspects of diabetes.

“The best thing UVM has given me is a strong foundation for starting my job and good connections.” - Stefanie Geiger ‘18, Seattle Children’s Research Hospital Research Institute
As a research scientist at Seattle Children’s Hospital Research Institute, Stefanie Geiger ‘18 is working with a team of immunology researchers on treatments for children with cancer. Her time conducting undergradaute research with Dr. Bryan Ballif in UVM’s Department of Biology equipped her with the skills and techniques that she uses every day in her current job.
