CAN A UNIVERSITY HAVE IT ALL?
It won’t take long to see what people love about Memphis. This is a university—and a city—full of drive. You can hear it in the roar of Tiger fans at every game. You can feel it when our students get recognized nationally for their successes. And you see it when another UofM discovery happens in our research labs. We can’t wait to show you what Memphis has that other colleges don’t.

CAN A CITY DOUBLE AS A CLASSROOM?
Memphis gives students the college experience that gets them ready for real jobs, real life and the real world. While the campus is in a quiet residential neighborhood, you are only minutes from all that the big city has to offer. Drive about 7 miles west of campus and you’ll find yourself on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River, with the funky rhythms of Beale Street and bustling downtown businesses not far away. If you go about 7 miles east of campus, you’ll find yourself at Shelby Farms Park, a stunning natural treasure—five times larger than NYC’s Central Park—with lakes, wetlands, forests and endless recreational opportunities.

Memphis is where the blues were born and rock ’n’ roll was invented. With countless music and arts festivals, eclectic restaurants, our world-famous BBQ, Beale Street and Graceland, people travel from all over the globe for the chance to feel the Memphis vibe, even if it’s just for a little while. Our students get the chance to feel it and the experience stays with them forever. And if you want resume-building opportunities, Memphis is where FedEx, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Nike, AutoZone, Hilton, International Paper and more giants of business are headquartered or have a major presence. We were ranked by U.S. News & World Report as having one of the Top 10 most successful internship programs in the nation.

WHO HAS ONE OF THE SAFEST LARGE CAMPUSES IN TENNESSEE? For the third year in a row (not to mention the seventh time in nine years), the UofM has one of the lowest crime rates of the ten largest universities in Tennessee. How’d we do this? By building a campus and fostering a culture that always puts students’ education - and most importantly, their safety first. Police officers patrol by car, bike and foot 24/7. There are over 600 campus security cameras and strategically-placed outdoor emergency phones. Mass emails, Tiger Texts and an outdoor loudspeaker system warn the campus of severe weather or other emergencies. The Blue Line shuttle service picks up visitors and students at 18 different campus locations and gets them where they need to be safely and conveniently. Additional innovative practices like emergency phone kiosks, after-hours golf cart shuttles and a 24/7 security patrol add to the enhanced safety of our campus.

CAN YOU CHANGE THE WORLD FROM YOUR OWN BACKYARD?
A lot of people come to the UofM thinking they know us well. They have seen our men’s basketball team on TV contending for national championships. They know our graduates and hire them every day. But behind the caps and gowns, behind the wins and losses, there is another amazing story to tell. Our research capabilities are world-class and a role model for other universities. Our unique relationship with the city means we can provide insights to issues that are very specific to industries in urban settings. For years, researchers at the UofM have been

CAN A CAMPUS FEEL LIKE HOME?
Students are always just a short walk from friends, classrooms and activities. The “Living Learning Community” style of our residence halls brings students together based on their major, so you live and learn with other students who share your academic interests. Amenities include meeting and classroom spaces, practice space for music majors, as well as personal work stations and computer facilities. We also offer a unique Living Learning Community just for first-time students called Tiger Learning Communities, which limits each community to 25 freshman students allowing for them to build close connections in study groups and collaborate through this cool learning experience. They take a “packaged” schedule together and work with specially selected faculty to enrich their learning.

STUDY HISTORY. THEN MAKE IT. There’s no better place to do just that than in the Home of the Blues and the Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
The University of Memphis is situated in the middle of a cultural mecca. Whether you like to eat, reflect on the past or take in the arts, there’s something for everyone within minutes of the campus. Within walking distance from campus: The Highland Strip Head west on Southern Avenue or Walker Avenue and you will bump into South Highland Avenue, also known as the Highland Strip. A fun collection of restaurants and shops. Brother Juniper’s on Walker near Highland is a nationally acclaimed breakfast and lunch spot that received a shout out from Rachael Ray in her book, Best Eats in Town . Also on Walker Avenue are other University faves—RP Tracks, Garibaldi’s Pizza, Moe’s and the Tiger Bookstore. Over on the Highland Strip, you can catch great eats at Café Eclectic and other restaurants, or find some unique items at the boutiques and shops.
A short drive from campus: Cooper-Young Entertainment District Drive west of campus down Central Avenue, and you’ll pass the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium where our Tigers play home football games. Go a little further and you’ll find the award winning Central BBQ. At Cooper Street, take a left and head toward Young Avenue, the heart of Midtown. The artsy, neighborly feel of this area can’t help but draw people to it. Many businesses are open during the day, but evening is when Cooper-Young really comes alive. Named for the intersection of Cooper Street and Young Avenue, the district is jam-packed with a unique mix of shops and restaurants, even a local brewery. Young Avenue Deli and Celtic Crossing are both hot spots for live music nightly. Standouts include Tsunami, Sweetgrass, Alchemy, Aldo’s Pizza Pies, Soul Fish and The Beauty Shop Restaurant, which, as the name implies, was once an old beauty shop. There’s a bookstore, antique stores, trendy boutiques, coffee houses, a chocolatier, local record label shop, a drum shop, a shelter for homeless cats called The House of Mews and so much more. This part of town definitely has its Memphis mojo working.
Overton Square Entertainment District A lively, ultra casual, environment where you always find creative people walking around. It is anchored by three live performance theatres and a multi-screen movie theatre that specializes in showing avant-garde releases as well as Hollywood blockbusters. Day and night, this district is popping with live music, specialty shops, upscale and relaxed dining, dessert shops, fitness centers and so much more. There are too many great places to list them all, but for special occasions you might try Restaurant Iris or Bari Ristorante. For grabbing a quick bite, there’s Boscos, The Second Line, Local on the Square, Memphis Pizza Café, Golden India, Babalou and Bogie’s Deli. Enjoy live music nightly at Layfayette’s. The world-famous Memphis Zoo is just a few blocks north of Overton Square. To get there, take Central Avenue west to Cooper Street. Turn right on Cooper and continue straight. Once you pass Union Avenue, you will be in the Square. Street parking is available, or look for the large parking garage on your left, just past Hatiloo Theatre.
Broad Avenue Arts District In Binghampton Once a forgotten part of town, Binghampton is now getting national press for its transformation into a thriving arts community thanks to neighborhood activists with a creative vision. Try dinner at The Cove, which has had rave reviews from Southern Living and The New York Times. Enjoy playing video games? Check out the Rec Room! Other places to visit include Three Angels Diner, Wiseacre Brewing Company, Broadway Pizza, City & State coffee shop, art galleries, cute shops and the Hampline—a bicycle and pedestrian line connecting Overton Park to Shelby Farms Park. Located at Broad Avenue/Sam Cooper Boulevard between Hollywood and the railroad tracks.
10 to 15 minutes from campus: Historic Downtown & Trolley Line There is so much to do, see, taste and hear in downtown Memphis, that we could never fit it all in, but it’s a must on anyone’s list. Downtown is where you’ll find FedExForum (home to the Tiger Men’s Basketball program), The Peabody Hotel and its famous ducks, legendary Beale Street, The National Civil Rights Museum, Sun Studio, The Orpheum Theatre, Tom Lee Park with pedestrian pathways along the stunning Mississippi River, Mud Island River Park, the Farmer’s Market, the Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum, AutoZone Park – the Memphis Redbirds’ AAA baseball stadium and so much more. And the food—oh, man, does Memphis know how to do food! Visit memphistravel.com for full listings.

CAN YOU HEAR THE ROAR?
When the Tigers win, the entire city wins. It’s loud and it’s electric, really, what happens around town in support of the Memphis Tigers. To say that people are wild about our Tigers is a total understatement. Memphis loves the UofM and the UofM loves Memphis. We are no strangers to March Madness or conference championships. Over 400 student-athletes compete in 17 different intercollegiate sports. The UofM is a charter member of the American Athletic Conference, and our athletic programs compete at the highest level as an NCAA Division I institution. They’re working hard off the field, too. The UofM athletic department closed the books on the 2015-16 academic year with a number of accomplishments, including a program-wide 3.114 GPA, the highest GPA for the athletic department in program history. Many go on to play for professional teams. It’s the south, so athletics are big. But this is also Memphis, so sports bring us together to be proud, eat some barbeque and have some good times. Then repeat often. Learn more at gotigersgo.com.

TIGERS!
WE FIGHT LIKE... 24
It began with a simple chant that reverberated throughout the city... In 1914, the UofM football team was known as the Blue and Gray Warriors. After the final game of that season, a few students shouted, “We fight like tigers.” The nickname stuck, but didn’t become official until 1939. About 30 years ago, a live Bengal tiger, named TOM, started attending all Tiger football home games and other University events. TOM is housed and cared for by an outside organization and travels in a climate-controlled trailer. The current tiger is TOM III, the third live tiger to represent our university in the past 30 years. The university also has a costumed tiger mascot lovingly known as Pouncer.

100 Years. 100 Tigers. As you walk around our campus—or drive around town—you will see 100 Centennial Tigers, which marked the University’s 100th year anniversary in 2012. While the pose for each tiger is the same, some of the area’s finest artists made each tiger a piece of art. All 100 tiger statues were sponsored by alumni, businesses and fans. The UofM Alumni Association developed the idea for Tigers Around Town as another way to connect our community with this great university. There is something special about the relationship between the city of Memphis and its hometown Tigers. For more than 100 years, the UofM has been a big part of the creative vibe that makes Memphis, Memphis. And there’s no other place like it in the world.
