Our food and drink special is here! It’s an exciting time for the South Yorkshire food and drink landscape. While the disruptions and uncertainty caused by the pandemic have affected every industry, those in hospitality have had to navigate vast challenges over the last two years. Despite this, we’ve never had as much choice as we do right now, and businesses are thriving now more than ever before. We’ve seen so many changes with the rise of collaborations, co-working spaces, neighbourhood dining and food halls. Our cover star Yee Kwan Chan tells all about her international ice cream empire based in the very heart of Sheffield, how her determination and a little bit of help from Dragon’s Den Deborah Meaden helped her grow her business while juggling new motherhood and the COVID storm. We also spoke to James O’Hara, well known for looking after Picture House Social and The Great Gatsby, and Joe Spriggs, owner of Alder Bar, about their successes despite recent challenges. This month, we have plenty more exciting content for you, including the first of our ‘Have lunch with’ series, where our very own Brogan Maguire sat down with long-standing journalist Ellen Beardmore to discuss her latest business venture. We see another trio of businesses showcased in our Shop Local series and celebrate all that’s new in South Yorkshire in our ‘What’s new in 2022?’ section. Our events page is back so you can learn all about our next #unLTDSocial, which takes place on June 23. We’re looking forward to seeing you there.

BELL & BUXTON'S DAISY ROSS CELEBRATES WINNING YOUNG APPRENTICE OF YEAR AWARD Bell & Buxton Solicitors are celebrating the fact that their very own Daisy Ross was announced as Young Apprentice of the Year at The Sheffield College Apprenticeship Awards 2022. Daisy came to Bell & Buxton as a 16-year-old, straight from school, having never worked in an office environment before. Charlotte Akpinar, practice manager at Bell & Buxton, said: “The firm could not have wished for a more capable and confident apprentice, Daisy has risen to every challenge she has been given and excelled, using her initiative to find the most suitable and effective solutions. “All of us at Bell & Buxton are very proud of what Daisy has achieved and look forward to seeing her career progress with us.”

ATHLEISURE BRAND SIKSILK PROVIDE FOOTBALL STRIPS FOR CHARITY MATCH Sheffield firms at risk as cybercrime threat continues Many SMEs in Sheffield could be unaware of the threat of cybercrime, according to IFM Insurance Brokers. The business also warns many organisations in Sheffield may have no protection in place to combat the risk of a data hack. The warning comes as the National Cyber Security Centre has asked UK organisations to bolster online defences due to recent viruses and hacking of Ukrainian organisations, which has formed part of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. According to Aviva’s latest Risk Insights Report, a cyber-attack is the eighth most significant risk that businesses face. The report revealed that six in ten (62 per cent) businesses said they were worried about the threat of a cyber-attack. Jamie Harvey, a director at IFM Insurance Brokers said, “Cybercrime is a growing threat to all businesses in Sheffield, particularly with the conflict in Ukraine and the increased cyber risk to small firms. “Therefore, local firms should evaluate their IT security and protection requirements to ensure they remain secure. The insurance industry offers a range of solutions to help SMEs combat the threat of cyber hackers so business owners should contact their local insurance broker who can offer advice.”

Return of business events behind success of new promotional products company A South Yorkshire entrepreneur who established his own business after he was made redundant during the pandemic is celebrating a ‘very strong’ first quarter, fuelled by the surge in events taking place. MAX Merchandise, a Rotherham-based promotional gift distribution business which specialises in branded products, was established by Andrew Swan in January 2022. With more than 14 years in the commercial gift industry, the ambitious entrepreneur applied for a kickstart grant from UKSE – a local investment company that provides finance of up to £1.5m to growing companies - which allowed him to invest in stock and marketing activity. Named in honour of

Andrew’s lockdown dog, Max, MAX Merchandise has already established a loyal and rapidly growing client base and has increased its turnover by 344% in comparison to its first month of trading.

While Andrew is currently getting help from family to help keep up with demand, he is now on the hunt for official business premises and is on track to recruit in the coming months.

NPIF – BEF & FFE MICROFINANCE REACH 10 MILLION LENDING MILESTONE NPIF – BEF & FFE Microfinance, managed by the Business Enterprise Fund (BEF) and Finance For Enterprise (FFE) and part of the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund (NPIF), has successfully provided over £10 million of loans to help businesses in the region overcome barriers to growth. Appointed in 2017 to deliver NPIF - Microfinance loans to businesses in Yorkshire, the Humber and Tees Valley FFE and BEF have worked to support

SMEs and have advanced 220 NPIF loans, totalling just over £10 million. In addition to helping businesses access finance through NPIF, investments have been match-funded by both lending partners, resulting in a further £11.6 million being advanced by FFE and BEF to these investee SMEs based across the region. Benefitting businesses have created over 1,589 new jobs so far, as well as securing the vital funds needed to invest in research

and development, improve manufacturing processes, and expand their operations. FFE and BEF both provide loan funding worth up to £100,000 through the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund. The project is supported financially by the European Union using funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020 and the European Investment Bank.

Richard and Dan raise £14,000 with Sahara running challenge Richard Conroy and Dan Kirby took on the blistering heat of the Sahara Desert - not to mention scorpions, sandstorms and camel spiders - to raise almost £14,000 for charity. Baslow-based Richard, CEO of Yorkshire property developer Conroy Brook/Ben Bailey Group, and Dan, of Sheffield tech company The Tech Dept, competed in the gruelling 250km Marathon des Sables. They raised £13,800 for Kids Out, the charity that provides over 70,000 disadvantaged UK

children a year with fun days out and toy boxes. Richard said: “The race organisers provide only water and shelter and we had to carry everything else ourselves, which in temperatures of up to 56 degrees was a tough

challenge. “There was a 12-hour sandstorm and 50 mile-perhour headwinds to contend with, as well as boiling hot temperatures during the day and freezing cold ones at night. “It felt like we had bitten off far more than we could chew but it was an incredible feeling to cross the finish line and know that we had raised so much for such a great charity.” There’s still time to support Richard and Dan by visiting www.saharafunrun. com

Sorola Energy warn not to forget simple steps as energy costs increase Sorola Energy Ltd in Rotherham are asking local businesses not to neglect simple measures still seen regularly around South Yorkshire. Rebecca Winn of Sorola said: “Prices for gas have increased by more than 300 per cent, which in turn forces up the cost of electricity. A cold winter put pressure on supplies and the amount of gas stored and there has been an increase in demand from Asia. The Ukraine crisis has seen further volatility in the energy market. The energy price rise is a global issue.” She is reminding clients and local businesses of the steps which can be taken to control or reduce commercial energy costs. “Make sure lighting and equipment in rooms that aren’t occupied are switched off. “Switch lighting to LED equivalents. Older style, florescent tube lighting can consume 60 per cent more energy so upgrading your fittings and fixtures can have a significant impact. “Review your current energy bill to see if you are on the best tariff available. Costs are higher but you may not be getting the best value already. Talk to us if you aren’t sure, we are happy to advise.”

COUNCIL INVITING PROPOSALS TO TRANSFORM FORMER JOHN LEWIS SITE

TOM HUNT AND ADAM PARK

Sheffield City Council is inviting interested parties to submit development proposals for the five-storey Barker’s Pool Building in the city centre, formerly home to John Lewis. The Council has now instructed property experts CBRE to test the market and is inviting high-quality development proposals to be submitted via a two-stage process, initially seeking expressions of interest by the end of June 2022. Since acquiring the lease of the property from John Lewis in January, the Council has been busy securing the building and commissioning surveys and investigations on the site. Works to remove asbestos and strip out the building will commence in the next few months, with anticipated completion in Spring 2023. Whilst a recent public consultation on the future of the building showed a preference for demolishing the building and replacing it with a new, smaller building and outdoor space, the

Council is keen to ensure that all options are explored – including repurposing the current building. The Council is encouraging proposals for the site that will add to the vibrancy and popularity of Barker’s Pool, which is home to numerous bars and restaurants, and encourage even more people to visit and enjoy the city centre.

Led by specialist recruitment consultant, Oliver Race, who joined Glu earlier in the year, the new department will provide recruitment services to employers across the region who operate in the construction and related industries. As Glu continues to expand its service offering, the creation of a construction specific division will allow the firm to provide employees on a temporary, permanent and contract basis for a wide range of technical, trades and bluecollar roles. Oliver Race said: “My background prior to joining Glu Recruit was running a construction recruitment division, so I’m delighted to be able to bring this knowledge and experience into my role here. “Recruiting in the construction industry is quite different to more traditional white-collar professional roles. It’s a different process as it can often be on a temporary or contract basis, especially on the trades and labour side, so it’s important for us to build up a strong and trustworthy talent pool who we can place in new construction jobs once their existing assignment has finished. “This means we have a ready-made database of white collar professional and temporary blue-collar trades and labour candidates available to our clients as soon

BUSINESS

LEGAL MATTERS

BY CHARLOTTE HIGGINS, BELL & BUXTON INCORPORATING IRONMONGER CURTIS Charlotte Higgins explains the main legal issues to consider when starting a business

KEY CONSIDERATIONS FOR START-UPS If you are thinking about setting up a new business, where do you start? What legal documents do you need to put in place? Carrying out an internet search can bring up so many results – here is a short guide to the key considerations at the beginning of your journey. Step one – Legal Form and set up Although it is very simple to start trading as a sole trader, you will be personally responsible for your business’s debts, together with accounting responsibilities. You may therefore want to look at forming a limited company. A limited company is a separate legal entity, but there are more reporting responsibilities than being

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

a sole trader. Finally, if you have a business partner, you could set up as a partnership and run the business together. Partnerships can take two different legal forms, an unincorporated partnership, or a limited liability partnership (LLP). An LLP has the benefit of the partners not being personally liable for debts. Step two – Contracts/Terms and conditions Once you have set up your new business, you will need to consider putting a robust set of terms and conditions in place. These conditions will govern the sale of your products/services or digital content. Where you are dealing with consumers, the Consumer Rights Act 2015

requires certain information to be provided to consumers before they enter into a contract, including, but not limited to, details of the cooling off period, where they can cancel the contract penalty-free. You will also need to consider putting contracts in place with your suppliers and customers. Your larger suppliers may already have their own contracts, so always ensure that you review these carefully, or ask a lawyer to review the same, to check what obligations you or the company are committing to. Where you are running your own website, ensure that the website has terms of use, together with a compliant cookies and privacy notice, to ensure all users are aware of

how your business intends to process any personal data it may collect. Step three – Property If you are running your business from home, you may need permission from your mortgage provider or landlord. You may also need permission from your local council, where you are receiving customer deliveries. If you are renting or buying a commercial property, you may have to pay business rates. Small businesses can apply for a discount on business rates, and some may pay nothing. Get help and support with your business set up – call Charlotte Higgins on 0114 249 5969.

ENTREPRENEURSUPPORT BY STEVE LENAGH, HELPING ENTREPRENEURS WIN

IS IT TIME TO UPDATE

YOUR HABITS? Our columnist Steve Lenagh of Helping Entrepreneurs Win (HEW) looks at how small changes in your day-to-day routines can have a huge impact in all areas of your life.

In this article, I explore how making small changes to your day-to-day life can have a huge impact in all areas, from personal wellbeing right through to sustainable business growth. I feel sustainable is a keyword here. I will use the example of the gyms in January following all those news year’s resolutions. All these good intentions, going five times a week… until February! Many people are under the false impression that all habitual changes have to be some dramatic shift in

behaviour and actions, but I’m here to tell you that’s not the case. It is in fact the tiny, seemingly insignificant changes, which over time, (and when applied consistently) will see the greatest benefit. So, what is a habit? They are essentially, very ingrained personal behaviours that we do automatically, without little if any thought. They are the social norms and invisible rules which guide you every day! Some may go back as far as childhood, so it stands to reason that it may require effort to first acknowledge what our habits are, and then secondly a real commitment

to implement new ones. So, what are your habits, and how are they serving you? When your alarm goes off in the morning, do you immediately scroll through social media until you roll out of bed feeling sluggish from the content you have immediately absorbed? Or do you press the snooze button 5 times, finally get

up, rush to the office, having not packed any food to fuel your body, and then take your mood out on other team members? Maybe before bed, you are again on your phone, or watch ‘just one more’ episode of your favourite Netflix show, resulting in a less than adequate sleep. As with all positive change, awareness is key, so that is where we need to start! So, what are you waiting for? For more information on how coaching can help, visit helpingentrepreneurswin. com

TOP TIP

Do an honest audit of your day-to-day actions. Write a list as if you were planning your day, and include morning, and bedtime routines. At the side of each habit, put a +/- to indicate whether the habit is either a positive or negative one. From here you can start to get a picture of what is working for you and what may be holding you back. It’s hard to ignore what is written in front of you! You can then start to make the small changes, that will have a BIG impact! What will you replace the negative habits with, and how could new habits, based on your wants and needs, benefit YOU? A word of caution (and encouragement!). There is no quick fix, and implementation of new habits takes discipline and daily action in order to avoid slipping back into old ways. However, the results that this will bring for YOU are nothing short of life-changing.

ABY ANDREW HELPING HAND ROWLEY OF BROOK CORPORATE DEVELOPMENTS Andrew explains the new retained service the Brook team is offering to business owners

SUPPORT, WHEN YOU NEED IT One of the key aspects of the support we offer at Brook is that once we have completed a project with a client, we don’t want the relationship to end there. The client might have utilised one or two of our services but often when we are working on specific projects, they might not be aware of the breadth of consultancy services we can offer. With that in mind, we recently launched our new retained service. The Brook Retained Service is a dedicated support service delivered by our consultants to give you the best support in your area of need, helping your business grow and succeed. By using our retained service businesses have access to a range of expert areas including strategy, ISO system implementation,

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

lean implementation, environmental sustainability and net-zero, sales process design, marketing, HR services, health and safety, international trade, leadership and management. We offer three levels of retained service for a fixed monthly fee, but businesses will only pay that fee if they use our services – if they do not require support every month, there is no charge in the months when they don’t use us. If a business owner needs more support than their current package contains, they can either pay for extra hours or take the next package up. We have tried to keep the offering as simple as possible because we know running a business can be stressful and we want to provide that support seamlessly.

Every business needs to recruit well, make itself known within its industry and comply with legislation. The Brook Retained Service is ideal for business owners who cannot afford to employ a permanent HR manager, marketing manager or health and safety officer, but still need that expertise to meet those aforementioned needs. Using our retained service opens the door to all that knowledge in one place. The best way to describe the Brook Retained Service is to think of it as an insurance policy for your business. If you identify a need for more support, you quickly and easily have access to a pool of expertise to help you meet that need. Our consultants are highly experienced across a range of fields and we always

endeavour to match businesses up with consultants who have previously worked or provided expertise in the industry the business operates in. Existing clients have already started to take up the retained services offer but we are open to speaking to any business owner, whether they have previously used our services or not, to establish what their need is and what level of retained service support is suitable for them. To find out more about the Brook Retained Service, visit https://www.brookconsult. co.uk/ or call 01226 240435.

Highlander’s, Chris Muscroft, asks if your prepared for the BIG switch off

COMMUNICATIONS & CONNECTIVITY HOT TOPICTHE BIG SWITCH OFF. As an industry the hot topic is the retirement of the legacy telecoms network, the BIG switch off. This is something we’ve been talking about since it was first announced back in November 2017. The initial focus for most businesses has been to move away from ISDN lines to VOIP SIP circuits or cloud telephony solutions. Thankfully, for many organisations, the move away from ISDN had already been completed prior to the pandemic, meaning they had the flexibility in their voice estates to work from anywhere when everyone was sent home. For those that hadn’t started that journey a move to solutions such as Microsoft Teams Voice or hosted platform solutions, amongst others,

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

were quickly adopted. For many, the migration to SIP lines or cloud telephony was deemed as all that was required however what most didn’t realise from that initial announcement back in 2017 is that all legacy connections are to be retired and that includes analogue lines. The analogue switch off may, on the face of it, not seem that significant, however many businesses still rely on the analogue service to provide their internet connectivity solution. Services such as ADSL and Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC/ VDSL) will simply stop as the analogue service is retired so if you have solutions such as this you need to make a change. What services are affected? Analogue lines, ADSL, FTTC,

VDSL, ISDN 2e & ISDN 30 What are the milestones? Nationally all analogue and ISDN related services will stop being sold by September 2023. The BIG switch off is December 2025.

your contract end dates then make a plan to change.

When should I change? Right now! December 2025 seems like a long way off however there are still 16 million copper lines in service. The networks will become overloaded if everyone waits until the last minute, so our advice is to make the move as soon as possible to avoid disruption.

Apart from keeping the service up are there any other benefits? For connectivity cost is one of the main benefit, as the new connections don’t require the analogue line there’s a saving to be made immediately. In moving to the new alternative there can also be significant improvements in speeds. If you’re moving from ISDN services there are a many advantages by moving to cloud telephony solutions such as remote working, flexibility and greater features/functionality.

What should I do if I have any of the services that are to be retired? Speak to your providers, check

FEMALE ROLE MODELS PROMOTING EQUALITY IN STEM

Our Mission: To attract, develop and retain a diverse and inclusive mix of people in STEM careers

CAROLINE CLARKE FURNITURE DESIGNER AT UP NORTH CABINET MAKERS What is your current role? Furniture Designer and Maker What does that involve on a day-to-day basis? I am lucky enough to have a job that varies massively day to day. I am predominantly based in the workshop; building bespoke cabinets and doors from scratch, and then spray finishing things in the spray booth in lovely matte paint of the customer’s choice. But then I also have a few days a week doing design work. This includes creating 3D models of new designs on the computer and producing photorealistic images of the proposed design. How did you get started working in STEM? Both of my parents have been involved in the furniture industry for many years, so I naturally picked up skills and interest from them along the way, and I used to tinker in our workshop at home in my spare time. But leaving school, and even university, I wasn’t sure which direction I wanted to go down in my working life. It wasn’t until

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

I had my first job, that I knew for sure that I wanted to be in a job that allowed me to use my hands, and have a mix of design work too, to allow me to have some creative input. What qualifications did you take or gain along the way? I left sixth form with 3 A-Levels, including one in Design and Technology, and went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree in Product and Furniture Design from Northumbria University. I did a three-month internship with an architect’s firm in Seville, where I was working on CAD (ComputerAided Design) which was organised through a scheme linked to the university. This helped me get my first job as a kitchen CAD designer, but I realised I was missing being in the workshop. I took on an evening course at Sheffield College in furniture making, which allowed me to touch up the skills I had learnt at university, so I had the confidence to apply for more hands-on roles.

Why do you love working in STEM? I love the variety it brings and the new challenges you face daily. In this industry you are always learning, which is so rewarding! There is also something extremely therapeutic about working with your hands and getting absorbed in the task in front of you. What challenges have you faced in your career? And how have you overcome them? I was denied entry to an internship for a company in Prague who made bespoke furniture, their reasoning was because there was a lot of heavy lifting on the job, and they did not want to employ a woman into that role. This made me furious, but it also made me determined to prove this company, and others who think alike, wrong. I used this as fuel to find the right job for me – I now work for an employer who treats me with respect and as an equal.

sectors? I would advise anyone looking to join STEM to not give up even if faced with discrimination as that isn’t a workplace you want to work for. Move on and find somewhere that values you! What do we need to do as an industry to attract and keep more women in STEM? The industry should try to use gender neutral terms in their application process, along with within the workplace – avoiding referring to people in the workshop as “lads”. I strongly believe in positive discrimination to hire more women, and people from minority backgrounds, into these industries in order to give a foot up to those who are already battling so many obstacles.

What advice would you offer for someone joining the STEM

From an appearance on Dragon’s Den to an international ice cream empire in the very heart of Sheffield, Yee Kwan Chan is a name you need to know. unLTD’s Brogan Maguire sat down with her to chat about opening her flagship parlour in the city and supplying some of the biggest restaurant chains. The Sheffield businesswoman has always loved food, but it wasn’t until a little later in life that she decided she wanted to base her career around it. Having chefs for parents, it is no surprise that foodie Yee eventually went down this route – but what is surprising is that she began her career as a chartered quantity surveyor, and it wasn’t until she and her husband Anthony went travelling around Australasia on their honeymoon in 2006 that her passion evolved into a business idea. Tasting the interesting East Asian flavours made her realise

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

there was something missing from the mainstream market, and after a year-long trip, the idea for Yee Kwan Ice Cream was born. She said: “While we were out there, I was struck by how far ahead the food scene was and how fresh everything was. The East Asian inspiration shone through and it really highlighted how bland and boring some of the offerings over here can be. “I wanted to use my Chinese heritage and build on all those lovely trips to the ice cream parlour at Atkinsons that I remember so fondly from

my childhood, but to make it innovative and exciting and bring it into the 21st century, with flavours that are hard to come by anywhere else.” Thus ensued a trial-anderror process as Yee – who had no experience in food manufacturing or running her own business – set to work on the venture. A new mother at the time, she gave up her job and focused on the idea full-time, working to perfect her recipes and discover the best way to grow her brand. Her authentic ice creams and sorbets were eventually

COVER STORY launched in 2010, with East Asian flavours matcha green tea, lychee and black sesame seed, chocolate miso, yuzu and pink guava and passionfruit. In the months following the launch she spent her time at lots of food festivals to gain valuable feedback from customers. Exhibiting at trade shows before being picked up by premium stores like Harvey Nichols, and later becoming an international seller. “I’ve always been ambitious, so my dream was always to think BIG! I had faith that my idea could grow into something really exciting,” she added. “There’s been tough challenges along the way, changing my career and starting from scratch was never going to be easy, “Add to that being a new mum juggling a busy home life with running a new business and you can imagine it hasn’t always been the smoothest of journeys! “We’ve had lots of fun bringing joy to people’s tastebuds. We’ve worked on huge fashion brand launches, developed alcoholic flavours for gin brands as well as serving up our flavours to A listers such as Katy Perry and Lily Allen.” What I can say though is that I’ve put my all into it and I think that’s very clear as we now export to retailers across the world including the UAE and China. We’re very proud of what we’ve achieved so far.” In 2014, after four years of consolidating her brand and perfecting her products, Yee took the next step on her business journey and appeared on Dragon’s Den, where she received an offer she couldn’t refuse from Deborah Meaden. It’s an experience she is eternally grateful for, and one that taught her a lot about being an entrepreneur in the food industry, bringing fresh ideas on how to pitch to large brands and how to scale up her business. After three years of working together, Yee decided the business was doing well enough to buy Deborah out, and she branched out on her own.

Since then, the brand has gone from strength to strength, supplying huge restaurant chains like Wagamama and Giggling Squid, as well as smaller independent restaurants like Bar Soba in Leeds and Zaap Thai, which has just opened a branch on Ecclesall Road. Yee also works with a number of companies to help them create their very own bespoke ice cream flavours.

But as is the case for many businesses, she had to make some considerable changes when the COVID-19 pandemic struck in order to ensure her brand could survive. “It was a huge shock to us, as 80 per cent of our business is selling to the hospitality trade, and that disappeared overnight,” she said. “We had to be very quick on our feet and diversify however we could. “We made use of the support provided by the Manufacturing Growth Programme and grants from the council to set up our own online shop, shipping directly to consumers around the UK using dry ice. “It’s enabled us to create a new sales channel and target customers that may not have ordered from us before. It was a test of resilience and determination in the middle of lockdown and trying to homeschool three children!” Despite the challenges, Yee Kwan Ice Cream weathered the COVID storm and the reopening of the hospitality industry gave even more opportunity for the business to thrive, with Yee even managing to launch a full vegan ice cream range in 2020. “We are very lucky that we have such good relationships with all of our restaurant customers and wholesale distributors, and when they reopened after lockdown we were able to pick up right where we left off. “There were other issues for us to deal with too, like the shortage of HGV drivers, lack of skilled labour, rising raw materials and energy prices. We’ve persevered and managed to get through all of that and get back into a really good place, launching some new unique flavours and nurturing relationships with our local stockists in Yorkshire.” And, not content with simply basing her factory in Sheffield and supplying local restaurants, Yee is now opening a flagship parlour in one of the most exciting and interesting locations in the city – Kommune. an ethnic woman at that – has had its own difficulties and I do feel like I have had to fight my corner a little bit more than most. Coupled with being a mother and juggling family life, there’s never been a dull day since I started Yee Kwan all those years ago. “I work with lots of young interns and I help them to develop the skills they need. It’s important to nurture them but I am also honest about how hard things can be and the setbacks they may have to face along the way. I also encourage them to persevere, to work hard and to go out and chase their dreams. “My biggest piece of advice for anyone wanting to start out in business is to identify where your passion lies and exactly

what it is that you want to create, and then to do as much research as you can in that particular field. “When it comes to growing your brand, push your product out as much as you can and be creative in the ways you spread the word. Head out to trade shows and expos and get people to talk about it on social media. Give out samples to your family, friends – even send some to influencers – and get them to post about it to get the conversation started. Everything will go from there.” Work is now well underway on the ice creamery in Kommune and anyone wishing to try Yee Kwan Ice Cream should visit: www.yeekwan. com

The value of advice You work hard to support your family and enjoy life – so why not seek expert advice to ensure your wealth is being managed effectively?

L

ife is busy – often complicated. Families become fragmented; demands on our time increase. You’d think that advances in technology, communications and media would make life easier, but that’s not always the case – it can just increase the noise and confusion as ‘information overload’ leaves us unsure about which way to turn. We rely on experts to help us or point us in the right direction: if our car breaks down, we see a mechanic; if we get toothache, we visit the dentist; if our body hurts, we consult a doctor. The same should also be true of our finances. Why wouldn’t we seek the advice of experts to ensure that it’s being managed at the most effective time and in the most effective way? Our advice proposition centres around you – a relationship-based, long-term approach focusing on understanding your motivations, needs and aspirations. Only then can we recommend products and investments that work in synergy

with each other and match your attitude to risk. But of course, ‘the value of advice’ can be subjective and mean different things to different people. For some, ‘value’ can be found in the relinquishing of the burden and worry; for others, it’s knowing that their investments are being professionally managed and working towards achieving their goals. However you define ‘value’, you can rest assured that we’re here to support and guide you on every step of your financial journey. At St. James’s Place, we focus on achieving and maintaining a thorough

understanding of your financial needs and aspirations. We believe passionately that the best wealth management service is provided through personalised, face-toface advice. We offer investments, with opportunities to grow your wealth and protect it against inflation, and a broad range of funds to choose from to help you build an appropriate portfolio. Regardless of your life stage, it’s also important to receive the right advice on your pension requirements. We can help you make the most of retirement opportunities, whether you’re an individual or a business.

We also specialise in providing effective solutions to meet your insurance and protection needs. Whether you require life cover or advice on Inheritance Tax, St. James’s Place will offer you the right products and services to suit you and your family. Whether you are remortgaging, downsizing, or a first-time buyer, St. James’s Place can offer advice on a wide range of mortgages. We also have access to a range of banking solutions. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and the value may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time and are generally dependent on individual circumstances.

SURVIVAL AND

SUCCESS STORIES The disruption and uncertainty caused by Covid lockdowns and restrictions affected every industry, but arguably none more so than hospitality. With the perfect storm of COVID-19 and Brexit hitting trade and supplies, unLTD spoke to business owners in the food and beverage industry to find out how, despite the challenges, they are back thriving once again “Going from zero to one hundred, flip-flopping through the tier levels, rule of six, eat out to help out, outside only etc… the people who thrived through that are superstars.” James O’Hara is a wellknown figure in Sheffield, looking after iconic city venues such as Picture House Social, The Great Gatsby and being one of the co-founders of Tramlines. He’s therefore no stranger to the huge challenge of operating businesses in the hospitality trade in the past three years. James said: “I think what recent years have taught us is that a love of hospitality is needed if you’re going to have a long-term career in it. “It can be a sector that people get lost in for years without realising that it isn’t for them. But when faced with something as disruptive as the pandemic, for those people it was a useful experience to show that hospitality isn’t for them and that they’d rather

38

do something else. So I think that as we return to normality, what we’re left with is really solid teams of committed individuals.” Despite the challenges, James’ businesses have returned and are stronger than ever. “The first quarter of 2022 was our strongest start to any year in the 12 years we’ve been operating hospitality businesses. “This has continued through the year, and it seems that people are prioritising

their leisure time above other things. I think the two years of disruption have left people with a knowledge that socialising is hugely valuable to them and the hospitality sector has seen a jump in the perception of how valuable it is to our towns and cities.” James believes this trend is influencing plans for redevelopments and reshaping the traditional retail high street, which was already experiencing a decline before Brexit and COVID 19 impacted the economy. “You only need to look at most city centre plans all over the country to see that the food and beverage sector has gone from being the problem child to one of the main factors in developing cities of the future. With traditional retail on the wane, it is experiences that will draw people together in our towns and cities and I for one am extremely excited to see what the next five to ten years hold for Sheffield and beyond.”

Echoing those thoughts is Joe Spriggs, accountancy and economics graduate and owner of Alder Bar which opened in Kelham Island in October 2021 just before the last surge of COVID 19 cases. Despite a dip in Christmas trade, the business is doing well and is opening a larger outside area in anticipation of the warmer summer months. Joe said: “After the initial buzz around us opening in October, we did get hit by the uncertainty around COVID 19 at Christmas, but things recovered and we have exceeded expectations so far this year so we’re looking forward to the summer. “Based on what we have seen so far, I think the increased cost of living is being offset by people wanting to make the most of their leisure time because they now have the freedom to do whatever they like that they haven’t always had in the past two years. “Although disposable income is going down, the idea that people are using more of it on leisure activities gives businesses like ours a boost, particularly through the warmer months when we have more space to accommodate people inside and outside. “We are also able to host events such as birthdays or engagement parties and bookings for these have remained steady throughout 2022 as people look to take advantage of the fact they can now host large gatherings which were not possible at times in the past couple of years.” Although Alder Bar has done well despite the challenges since it opened, Joe has experienced supply issues with certain products. However, the business’s desire to use local produce has

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

helped to reduce the impact. “We have had problems with supplies which are shipped from outside the UK. We had a real issue with gas supplies around Christmas and our house lager was unavailable for a while because we couldn’t get hold of it, but I think overall we haven’t been too badly affected. “I think we have probably fared better than some other businesses because wherever possible, we try to buy from Sheffield and surrounding areas so the supply chains are shorter. Most of our beers are from local breweries so fortunately, we have been able to keep the majority of our range available throughout

this uncertain period.” With a big summer ahead, Joe believes that short term, the hospitality sector will thrive, but towards the end of 2022 the future is less certain. “I’m expecting strong summer trade with this being the first summer people are free to do whatever they want. In the medium term as we approach the end of the year, I think there will be a reduction in footfall, which we would expect anyway but it might be worse this year as people are forced to save. “Long term, I expect things to settle down, but I think we may have to ride out a bit of a short-lived lull in the meantime.”

WORTH

Worth is an interior design, homeware and gift business in Broomhill, creating bespoke soft furnishing and upholstery. Founder Sarah Worth opened her shop in 1991, curating a collection of home and giftware with an emphasis on artisan, handcrafted and ethically made items. She tries to source unusual yet affordable product ranges. Sarah said: “I enjoy the diversity each workday offers, and working in Broomhill is excellent. An eclectic community of independent small businesses provides a fantastically diverse retail offering. “The beauty of shopping locally is that customers and shop owners can build up a unique relationship, and many of my customers are just as welcome to pop in for a chat as they are to come in and make a purchase. “There are lots of challenges for independent businesses. We were coming through the other side of the pandemic only to now be faced with the pressures created by the current cost of living crisis. “The high street is quieter. All we can do is provide the best service, stay adaptable, show our customers how much they are appreciated, keep people on our high streets, and challenge the increasing trend toward online shopping.”

SHOPSTORY LOCAL COVER Ooops A Daisy

Following the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, rebuilding people’s confidence to venture out and explore the vast range of diverse shops we have on our high streets has been fundamental to the stability and future of those businesses. At the same time, though, an increase in the cost of living is putting a squeeze on local businesses and their customers alike. Alan Ball is one of Business Sheffield’s team of high street experts, supporting local businesses to weather the challenge. “I am seeing three main areas that our high street businesses are facing challenges on,” he says. “These are rising energy costs, the rising costs of ingredients and products, and the reduction in cashflow available. “To help combat these issues, there are a few things I suggest doing immediately. The first is a cashflow forecast – this can just be a line on what the sales are weekly and carry that forward for a month, then add the outgoings weekly and take that over a month so you capture things like wages and utility bills. You can now see immediately if you have any shortfall and begin to act. “The second is to look at is your costs. When was the last time you looked around for an alternative supplier, or asked what alternative lines they might have available? “I can be on hand to visit and support to help with a range of queries and problems within your business. Our high street businesses are the backbone of our community, not only in the city centre but across the districts. Support for our high streets will maintain the important service they provide, the jobs they create and that all-important experience. I hope that they continue to reach out for support; I will certainly be on hand to do just that where my experience adds value.” If you’d like some support for your business, call us on call 0114 224 5000 or email BusinessSheffield@sheffield. gov.uk You can also watch a recorded webinar from Alan on managing cashflow at https://tinyurl.com/38ydxs43

Ooops A Daisy is a florist based in Chapeltown which sells gifts, garden ornaments and flowers for weddings and memorials. Diane Round started her business about six years ago. There was no florist in Chapeltown at the time, so Diane saw the opportunity to open her shop, and being a part of the Chapeltown community means a lot to her. Diane said: “We started off with a free community event and worked hard to get funding which was a real success. “The community spirit in Chapeltown is excellent; there are always events for different charities – veterans, mental health, animals – there’s always something taking place. It’s communityminded, and there’s often a focus on creating things to do for both older and younger people alike. People want Chapeltown to succeed and put a lot of effort into this. “People are keener on shopping local now because they couldn’t go far during the pandemic, so local businesses were delivering more and more for their communities. Now, people are repaying those businesses by continuing to shop with them and I think I can speak for all small business owners when I say we are eternally grateful for that. “Covid and Brexit affected our ability to get stock and initially, we struggled. It took longer to get things; when funerals and weddings relied on them that became more troubling than the prices going up. Within about six months things had levelled out, but the impact of the cost-of-living crisis remains to be seen.”

MARTHA HERITAGE

Martha Heritage was founded in 2012 by Anna Coupland with a desire to inject something new into her neighbourhood in Sheffield whilst gaining some work/life balance with a growing family. In 2015, Josh Mintoft joined when family circumstances made Anna think she may have to close. By 2016 a great bond had formed, and their working partnership was cemented. In 2018 they purchased the shop next door on Terminus Road, Millhouses, and in May 2019, Heritage Lifestyle, a local independent department store, was born. They sell a mixture of furniture, locally sourced candles, room fragrances, decorative accessories, giftware, loungewear and much more. Josh said: “We love that every day is different for us, and we’re faced with

so many challenges along the way, but each of those has helped get us where we are today. “We are nestled within a neighbourhood, which makes us unique. We’re a row of fully independent shops and businesses that all support each other! We offer something entirely different from the usual high street, and we pride ourselves on our customer service and making everyone feel welcome within our neighbourhood. “The biggest challenges we face as an independent is getting ourselves known and getting our name out there, we’re very much a destination and not somewhere you’re likely to fall upon. “However, it’s so lovely knowing how many people recommend us to friends, and we see daily how many people find shopping independent so important.”

THE CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF FOOD AND DRINK IN SHEFFIELD You don’t have to look far to see that we’ve all changed the way we like to eat, drink and network when we’re out and about. unLTD’s Matt Holmes and Georgina Kerr look at what some of the best venues and vendors across South Yorkshire are doing within the changing landscape of food.

HEIST BREW CO

THE RISE OF COLLABORATIONS The age of the collaboration has well and truly arrived. Now you can find the hippest and tastiest street food right within your favourite places to kick back with a drink. Local brewery Heist Brew Co may be new to South Yorkshire, but they have been brewing their delicious range of beers in neighbouring Derbyshire since 2018. Situated on Neepsend Lane, they have transformed one of the area’s many former industrial warehouses into a mecca for craft beer aficionados. But tasting delicious beer isn’t the only thing on offer within Heist. Hungry? They have teamed up with Slap and Pickle to bring you the best burgers and dirty fries to keep you going. Afterwards, you and your party can get down to a competitive game of shuffleboard, try your luck

in the arcade or sit down with the PlayStation 5. Settling into Kelham Island is North Yorkshire brewery SALT, setting up shop within the Green Lane Works iconic entrance gateway. Taking up residence within SALT is Bao Mesters, bringing you the tastiest bao buns and fillings from the genius behind Edo Sushi. The two together harmoniously make the up “craft + bao” brand. The laidback approach is what is key to making this partnership click, as there is no pressure if you want to just enjoy a bao bun, enjoy a drink or both in their hip surroundings. A new addition to Barnsley town centre is the Spiral City bar. Located on the Victorian Arcade, the team at Spiral City has formed a business model different to anything else happening in the town. With not only the brand-new home of the Vinyl Underground in the next-door unit, having moved from its previous venue on Regent Street, co-owners of Spiral City Fiona and Dean

Brewing right in the heart of Sheffield city centre, multiple award winning Triple Point Brewing is a solid addition to the city’s craft beer scene. If you find yourself there on a sunny day, park yourself in their large beer garden and soak up the sun or take a seat indoors where you can see the huge tanks where the beer you are drinking is brewed! JORO BENCH

NEIGHBOURHOOD DINING Long gone are the days of having to endure traditional etiquette to sample fine dining with the freshest seasonal produce you could hope for. Nestled in the corner of Dyson Place, the latest Sharrow Vale hotspot, you can find Tonco, serving modern British small plates with local beer and organic wines. We have definitely all made the shift to sharing plates, and we’re thankful that we have! Tonco gives you the perfect opportunity to try a bit of everything so you can wave goodbye to food envy. The space is intimate but bright and if you find that something on the menu goes completely over your head, the friendly staff are more than happy to give you further insight. Starting off as a series of pop-ups, bursting onto the Nether Edge culinary scene in 2018 is Bench, a self-declared ‘neighbourhood hangout with communal bistro-style dining’. Their sample menu boasts boquerones, charcuterie plates from Curing Rebels and creamy burrata. Their whole ethos is about communal drinking and dining. If you are wanting a private booth to enjoy your natural wine, this probably isn’t your go-to place. Grab a loved one, sit down around their long central bench and enjoy some incredible food and drink. Not so long ago, if you were to be told that some of the finest food you’ve ever tasted would be served to you inside a shipping container situated on the side of a busy ring road, then you would be forgiven for thinking that was inconceivable. However, JÖRO has entered our lives and no longer is that concept so alien. JÖRO is situated within the Krynkl building in Kelham Island and offers its 7 tables a relaxed dining experience with food that is fresh, seasonal, and packed with flavour. Try the 5, 8 or 10-course tasting menus and pair them with a drinks flight to see how they complement and change the flavours of the food. If you think this sounds a bit formal for you, then you couldn’t be further from the truth. There is no dress code, and it certainly isn’t a quiet atmosphere.

THE RUSTIC PIZZA CO VERSATILITY OF FOOD HALLS Of course, we couldn’t talk about the changing landscape of food and drink across South Yorkshire without mentioning The Glass Works development in Barnsley. An ambitious project to completely overhaul the town centre, the aim of The Glass Works was to introduce a more diverse range of retail, leisure, and food outlets right in the heart of the town. With summer well and truly on the way, the new layout offers some fantastic outdoor space right in the heart of the town with the brand new 200 Degrees Coffee and Coffee Boy offering European style outdoor seating, perfect for taking advantage of the sun with an iced coffee. Located above the new indoor market is the Market Kitchen with a fantastic range of independent food outlets and Cucina Sky Lounge for everything from a classic beer to Cucina’s own cocktail creations. During the day the plush leather seats of Cucina offer the perfect place to sit back on your latest project or meet clients and colleagues for a drink during the early evening. One business that saw the beginning of the Market Kitchen and has experienced how the town has changed over the last two years is Dolly’s Desserts. A TikTok sensation, Dolly’s Desserts has amassed over one million dessert-loving followers, with people from across the country visiting to try their bubble waffles, blondies, and ice cream. Meanwhile, the largest foodhall in the North can be found in the Neepsend area of Sheffield. Cutlery Works is the brainchild of the people behind the Milestone Group, and as its name would suggest, can be found in one of the area’s large former industrial cutlery works buildings. Set over two floors, diners can choose to peruse the venue’s plethora of independent vendors or sit down and order everything through the bespoke ‘iBe’ app. This method of ordering was popularised during the pandemic, but Cutlery Works have been championing the convenience of app ordering since its

During the COVID-19 pandemic, The Rustic Pizza Co were one of the companies that successfully diversified their business, offering build-your-own pizza kits which proved to be hugely popular amongst their customers.

FOOD AND DRINK SPECIAL

KEEPING SHEFFIELD SUSTAINABLE In 2019 Sheffield was presented with the Sustainable Food Places bronze award, but how has the city improved since? unLTD’s Georgina Kerr looks at some of the most eco-friendly businesses and how they work. Sheffield is a city full of thriving local independent restaurants, cafes, and food retailers all offering something different. But with so many food outlets across the city, how are independent businesses helping Sheffield stay sustainable in 2022?

THE FOOD WORKS Every year The Food Works saves 500 tonnes of food from landfills through their kitchen, market, and community programmes. Aiming to not only prevent food waste but care for the wider community, The Food Works Kitchen creates meals on a ‘pay what you can afford’ basis. Available either on a subscription or in person at one of their three sites, Just Meals start at a minimum contribution of £1 and are created from scratch by the Food Works chefs with zero-waste.

TOO GOOD TO GO One simple way for local restaurants, cafes and food stores to easily reduce their food wastage is through Too Good to Go. Designed with both businesses and consumers in mind, the Too Good to Go app allows customers to purchase unsold food, saving businesses from losing out on stock costs, and preventing good food from ending up as waste. You might even end up with more regular customers through the process!

BEANIES WHOLEFOODS Winners of Best Sustainable Brand at the Exposed Awards, Beanies Wholefoods in Crookesmoor are leading the way with a more ethical and sustainable business model. Working with a number of Sheffield charity partners, Beanies Wholefoods are tackling the issue of food waste in the city head-on, supplying produce to The Archer Project, Foodhall, The Food Works and Open Kitchen Social Club.

UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD – INSTITUTE OF SUSTAINABLE FOOD Sheffield is very fortunate to be home to the Institute of Sustainable Food. Dedicated to researching food practices and the circular economy, the institute offers a fresh perspective on how Sheffield is achieving its sustainability goals. In a recent report, researchers from the Institute of Sustainable Food outlined how local food suppliers and retailers contributed to the resilience of the UK’s food systems during the pandemic. This is fantastic news for the future of local businesses and is a testament to the incredible work of our independent businesses over the last 18 months. Sheffield is now on the path to the Silver Sustainable Food Places award, with businesses across the city collaborating to implement more sustainable food practices within the local economy. FOODHALL SHEFFIELD Foodhall is a social action business which is directly stopping food waste while feeding the people of Sheffield. Intercepting leftover produce from local businesses allows the Foodhall to provide quality meals at an affordable price for everyone. Another business operating on a ‘pay what you can’ basis, Foodhall offers a minimum of three meals a week at their public dining room on Brown Street. The Foodhall has grown in recent years to offer more community-focused activities, as well as an affordable meal delivery service.

FOOD AND DRINK SPECIAL

We’ve now reached the halfway point of the year, dear reader, and our ever-expanding city has welcomed plenty of new venues to happily facilitate your eating, drinking and socialising needs. Here’s a roundup of some exciting newcomers who’ve arrived in the last six months… 5TARA

Situated on Duke Street, a stone’s throw from the city’s famous Park Hill complex, Indian restaurant 5Tara has been open for dine-in meals since January and already the venue has built up a dedicated following, not just in the Steel City but across the North and Midlands too. Head down for some of the most authentic Punjabi you’re likely to find around these parts. @5tara_sheffield

DARK HORSE

A popular addition to the Banner Cross area, Dark Horse opened its door in January and is regularly packed out by punters at weekends. There’s a nice, cosy inside with modern interiors, a decent drinks selection (including cocktails, if beer isn’t your thing) and possibly the biggest draw of all: sumptuous burgers and street food bites from Slap & Pickle. @the_dark_horse_sheffield

@rokusheffield

The beer experts behind Cutlery Work’s Boozehound bar, as well as the Plough Inn out in Derbyshire, have opened their new micropub and café, The Boston Arms, on Chesterfield Road in Woodseats. The vibe is artisan coffee and bakes during the day, then craft beer and an as of yet unannounced street vendor taking you through into the evening.

The Spring Yard courtyard at Burton Road (situated behind the Peddler Warehouse) now contains a number of exciting food and drink establishments, making the spot a foodie haven all year round, not just on Peddler weekend. The latest addition is Roku, a sleek sushi restaurant from the guys behind the city’s popular Edo Sushi brand.

GOLF FANG

Bringing some adult-only crazy golf fun to Sheffield, Golf Fang opened its eclectic course to the public in April. The 38,000 sq. ft warehouse space on John Street is certainly an impressive sight, housing 18 holes of crazy golf action and decorated by local artists who have come together to cover every inch of the space in imaginative street art. Their on-site drinks offering, Birdies Bar, will soon be added, serving up a wider drinks menu and hosting live music nights at the venue. @golffangsheffield

ELLEN BEARDMORE HAVE LUNCH WITH… ELLEN BEARDMORE

THE NEXT CHAPTER

Long-standing journalist, Steel City champion and brain tumour survivor – unLTD’s Brogan Maguire sits down for lunch with former Sheffield Telegraph editor Ellen Beardmore to discuss her latest business venture. Ellen and I have a brief but friendly history, after crossing paths for just under a year while I was working at The Star, so the opportunity for a catch up was most welcome. There are two main things that I knew about her – that she is one of the most wellconnected people in Sheffield, and that she is a massive foodie (which bodes well for a lunch meeting) – but what I didn’t know was just how interesting her career, and personal life, have been. A Yorkshire lass born and bred, Ellen moved to the city from Dewsbury when she was just 18, taking her first steps in journalism by enrolling on an NCTJ course at Norton College. That year, in her words, made it “impossible to leave”, after falling in love with Sheffield and everything it had to offer. She then got a trainee job with JPIMedia at the Pontefract and Castleford Express, commuting every day, before moving on to the Derbyshire Times. “That was a real step up,” she tells me. “At the age of 19 I’d learnt so much, like doing door knocks and going to inquests, and I felt so ready for the next challenge. It was during the beginning of the digital era, so I started all their social media and helped them move online.”

56

Just 18 months later and Ellen was offered her dream job at The Star, where she worked for more than a decade and had several specialisms from politics to education – which is why she now seems to know everybody in the city. Well, that and the fact she’s always the first person to try a new bar or restaurant. “I also did a lot of food and drink writing in my spare time,” she adds as she tucks into a taco and sips her prosecco. “We didn’t have many meals out when I was growing up, so I’ve really made up for it since moving here. “What I love about Sheffield is the indie vibe and the fact it has so many unique places to go out.” It hasn’t all been smoothsailing, though, as Ellen

discovered she had a large brain tumour when she was just 25 years old and had to undergo a gruelling 13-hour surgery at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital to have it removed. Thankfully she was one of the lucky ones and, apart from losing the hearing in her right ear, has made a full recovery. It’s that experience which has shaped her into the tenacious, dedicated and compassionate person she is today, something she will bring into her new business venture. After taking redundancy from the Sheffield Telegraph earlier this year, Ellen has now started her own company, Edit Sheffield, shouting about the amazing things happening in the city. With an impressive list of clients already lined up – from the Migration Matters Festival to Sheffield Food Festival – it is clear that going out on her own was a good decision. Ellen says: “Sheffield is my first love and I want to champion and promote our city as much as I can. Being a journalist for all my adult life gives me a huge advantage as I know what content works – and what doesn’t. “Most people have a great story to tell and it’s my job to unearth that and share it with the world.”

ELLEN BEARDMORE

ELLEN GAVE US HER VERDICT ON SHY BOY CANTINA... Sheffield wasn’t always known for being this cool. The recent national press coverage and awards handed out to city restaurants and bars is of course welcome, but it’s worth remembering the pioneers of the scene too. The Great Gatsby, on Division Street, has always been at the apex of cool in Sheffield. While most people know it as the focus of a great night out with creative cocktails, the Mexican food it offers under the name Shy Boy Cantina is worth making a special trip for. Their selection of tacos, quesadillas and burritos is ideal for a stylish, colourful and authentic lunch that’s a bit different from most daytime offerings in the city centre. The tacos - which can be snapped up at two for £8 - include a baja fish filling which is just the right combination of soft, crunchy and creamy. With one of their strong margaritas (salted rim, obviously), it brings all the holiday vibes to the table. After some deliberation, I opted this time for the coconut shrimp and pork with kimchi taco options. They were the ideal marriage of flavours and textures. The juicy pulled pork was packed with hefty

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

spices that gave the tastebuds a real kick, with sourness from the kimchi threaded throughout. The cool, fresh marinated king prawns in my shrimp were the perfect second course, so to speak. I loved the mayonnaise with a subtle taste of coconut in it, and piles of vibrant green avocado with pink onion made the dish look divine. Brogan stuck with tacos too. Her baja fish was cooked and seasoned perfectly, striking a glorious balance with the fresh coriander and garlic mayo crema, and she loved the sweet, spicy gotchujang sauce on her fried chicken. We shared some cheese fries for the table. Not just an afterthought, these are cooked-just-right fries oozing with cheese sauce, sriracha and more gorgeous garnishes. Instagram foodies will be in heaven here. There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options on the menu, including tempting Korean fried cauliflower wings as a side dish and veggie chilli as a main. Gatsby also does a Taco Tuesday offer and a bottomless brunch at weekends – so whether it’s a working lunch, a boozy client meeting or just a good old catch up with friends or colleagues, you can’t go wrong here.

PROPERTY

Auction House is a national brand with a strong local presence across the South Yorkshire region. The SY team continues to go from strength the strength, selling more than 20 properties every auction. Recently, one of their properties featured on the popular television programme Homes Under the Hammer. To find out more about what happens behind the scenes, unLTD’s Matt Holmes caught up with area manager Sam Harris.

Firstly, we wanted to get to know a little bit about Sam and Auction House before hearing all about his experience on Homes Under the Hammer. He joined the business in March 2020 as a property coordinator when just two weeks later the COVID-19 pandemic hit, bringing uncertainty to the market and Sam’s career respectively. No one knew how social distancing or lockdowns would affect the property auction market. Fast forward to July of that year and Auction House South Yorkshire adapted how they operated, holding their first-ever Livestream Auction, held behind closed doors, and streamed online. The format was an instant success with all seven lots of the first auction selling on the day achieving 100 per cent success! The fast growth of the South Yorkshire team resulted in Sam rising through the ranks of auction valuer to area manager, and they continue to grow to this day. They plan to expand the team before the end of the year bringing on a new valuer, meaning larger

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

auctions with more lots and increasing their market share in the region. By now there aren’t many people who don’t know about Homes Under the Hammer, responsible for inspiring many to dream of property development and renovation. I asked Sam how he came

to appear on the hit daytime television show; “Homes Under the Hammer are regularly in contact with us for properties to feature on the show. They ask to be put in touch with the buyers at our auction to see if they’re interested in taking part.” The filming for the show

is done in two parts, with the first seeing Sam invited for filming to discuss the property, the local area, what condition it is in and the all-important value. Once the property has undergone a refurbishment, Sam is invited back to give his expert valuation of the updated property compared to when it was initially sold at auction. The property in question that is to feature on the programme was a terrace in Doncaster in very poor condition. Sam said: “It was a typical auction lot – a ‘property with potential’. It needed a full refurbishment and the layout rearranged which was carried out by the vendor.” Sam’s episode is yet to be aired, so do be sure to keep an eye out on Homes Under the Hammer to see how the South Yorkshire property does under the gavel. If you’re interested in starting off on your own auction property journey, head to Auction House South Yorkshire’s website to find out more: auctionhouse. co.uk/southyorkshire

NETWORKING

Sheffield City Council’s See it Be it in Sheffield campaign brings to life the world of work by facilitating access to a network of local businesses and employers. When a group of local professionals and entrepreneurs met with students at The Sheffield College recently, questions were flying thick and fast… “How did you start your business?” “What are your goals?” “What are your biggest challenges?” For this group of students though, these were the questions being directed at them, rather than posed by them. Young people studying The Sheffield College’s entrepreneurship and start up courses don’t just research and learn about existing business ideas, they take that knowledge and turn it into real business ideas. Many of those attending had already started to form their ideas into a tangible venture, with concepts ranging from IT support, marketing and design consulting to handmade candle manufacturing and fashion

brands. Meeting over breakfast, the students were there to meet new contacts from the South Yorkshire business community. Organised by See It Be It Sheffield and supported by the team at unLTD, we gathered a group of people who represented the best of what our region has to offer. Recent unLTD cover stars, Yee Kwan Chan and Harvey Morton were among those invited to join us, where we wanted them to be able share their own experiences in business, but also give the students their thoughts and feedback on their ideas too. More importantly, we wanted those attending to have the opportunity to meet the kind of people they can draw on in their own community to help make even the loftier ambitions become tangible. Collaboration is a huge aspect of business and events like this mean that students are not isolated as they launch their enterprise.

Sheffield City Council’s See it Be it in Sheffield campaign brings to life the world of work by facilitating access to a network of local businesses and employers. We help young people to access meaningful encounters with employers and experiences of the workplace. We are working with employers of all sizes and across all sectors - from large global corporations and public sector organisations, to small businesses, charities and soletraders! Activities can include Mock Interviews, Skills Workshops, Workplace Visits, Careers Talks, Mentoring, Enterprise Skills and Virtual Work Experience and more. We want to work with you too! “See It Be It are doing something pretty special in Sheffield,” says Dan Laver, unLTD’s own head of sales. “I’ve worked with them on a few ideas and it’s given me the bug to do more. When we first spoke, the team shared their goals with me – creating meaningful experiences that showcase the wealth of opportunity in our region” See It Be It asked unLTD to team up with them earlier this year, with our initial concept of a joint networking event between professionals and students becoming the event delivered in May. “We knew we wanted to create an event that was engaging for both parties. We didn’t want a presentation, we didn’t want a panel. We wanted to replicate a format that the students are going to find

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

themselves in as they move forward, giving them a chance to quickly promote their ideas and to find those in the room that can share experiences and may be able to help connect them with someone who can help them reach their goals.” Brogan Maguire, unLTD’s news and features editor, also joined in, speaking to several young people about her own journey as a writer and journalist and learning about how the students are turning their own concepts and passions into viable business plans. “It’s been a great morning! We managed to gather a group of our friends from different sectors and different backgrounds. The people here today all have different stories to tell and it’s been fantastic to hear them getting to know their counterparts from the college.

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

“We wanted to give the students a chance to meet people that were just like them not so long ago! I have heard students striking up conversations with someone who does the job they want to be doing. They can see that the things they want to do in their career are realistic options. It’s about demonstrating what can be achieved and how you can get there. It’s been about creating some inspiration and showing that really successful businesses started in the exact same places that these young people find themselves.” Sarah Kettlewell, head of student participation and careers, added: “This collaborative event was a fantastic opportunity for students at The Sheffield College to meet and be inspired by local business

people. Through the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce Business and Enterprise Employer Skills Academy we are committed to developing the future generation of entrepreneurs in Sheffield through skills development, guest speakers and the unique START Up entrepreneurship programme. Student members of this Academy utilised this opportunity to practice pitching their business ideas and made new contacts. For many this was the first time they have taken part in a networking event and although a bit nervous at first, they all shared how useful they found the event, how friendly all of the employers were and asked if we can do it again! We look forward to hosting unLTD again in the fantastic Silver Plate Restaurant at The Sheffield College."

TECHNOLOGY

TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS

Daniel Bumby from technology solutions company Simoda explains why Google Workspace is becoming the sensible choice for businesses interested in alternatives to Microsoft 365.

IS IT TIME FOR A NEW WORKSPACE? Lots of businesses have already moved their productivity suite of applications to the cloud and, according to the statistics, some 83 per cent of enterprises use Microsoft 365 – or Office 365 as it was previously known. However, over the last 12 months we have started to see a trend in the business community choosing Google Workspace over Microsoft 365. For a Microsoft and Google Workspace partner like ourselves, this is an interesting battle and one that we address daily, but it also throws up some interesting challenges. Google Workspace has generally been the application stack of choice for new businesses which are what we call ‘born in the cloud’

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

and traditionally it has been the flavour of choice for the education sector. Now, we are seeing a true challenge to Microsoft’s dominance with Google’s business class productivity package. An interesting trend we are experiencing at the moment is businesses with mixed estates, meaning they have both Microsoft 365 & Google Workspace. This brings even more challenges to the IT team, but these are not ones to look at in fear. The objective of a mixed estate is to ensure that users are as productive as possible and in today’s modern IT world this is achieved by giving the users the applications they are most comfortable with. Why work with Simoda for Google Workspace?

Simple really - Simoda are a local technology solutions business based in Kelham Island and help business leaders and IT teams with their technology challenges. As a Google Workspace partner, we help our customers optimise licenses to ensure costs are kept to a minimum, migrate to and from Google (and Microsoft), and provide ongoing support for Google Workspace, including monthly or annual billing. What is included in Google Workspace? • Gmail for Business • Meet (video and voice conferencing) • Chat (secure messaging) • Shared calendars • Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides

• • • •

Keep (shared notes) Forms (survey builder) Sites (website builder) Currents (the replacement for Google+ for Google Workspace) • At least 30GB of cloud file storage (Google Drive) • Security and administrative controls • Google Vault (Retention and eDiscovery) If you are unsure what to do, or you want a local business with Google experience to support you and your teams, then get in touch with one of the Simoda Google specialists today by calling 0114 553 3600 or emailing Daniel.bumby@ simoda.co.uk Alternatively, go to www. simoda.co.uk/applications

HELEN WILLIAMS

Meet the 2022 team who are brave enough to climb Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. COVID-19 stopped play in the initial quest to get out to Tanzania and tackle the challenge, however TWO years on and we are finally in training, upping our fundraising and fully embracing the countdown. What those two years on ice have meant, though, is we have lost numerous members of the original squad, due to life and directional changes. Thank you to those team members who have undertaken and re-committed to their own alternative challenges to raise vital funds for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity. Dan and Craig are embarking on the 5896m high mountain this month, while the two James’ and Helen will be undertaking the challenge in September. James Holmes, from Homes by Holmes, said: “I undertake challenges in order to not take for granted the blessed life we’re having and to be an inspiration to my kids and the people around me.

“I’m most looking forward to the oxygen deprivation to find out how to tolerate the lack of oxygen at such altitude!” Helen Williams, from HEW Coaching, said: “Kilimanjaro has been on my bucket list for a long time and when the opportunity arose I knew I had to grab it with both hands and get my name down. I love the work the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity do and what difference they bring to so many lives and families. I can’t say I am going to love sleeping in a tent on the side of a mountain or regulating the change of temperatures through the different ecosystems but it’s too late now!” James Hodson, from Evoluted, said:“I am really excited to be part of this

challenge to support The Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity and whilst climbing Kilimanjaro will be one the hardest things I’ve done, I know the money raised will really help the charity. “ Dan Turner, from Galaxy Insultation and Craig Cooper from CC Plumbing and Heating, said: “Craig and I decided to take on this challenge for different reasons but both with the aim of raising money for charity. My reasons for throwing myself into this extreme adventure was to help me deal with the passing of my mum. It has proven to be a positive and fulfilling distraction. Both Craig and I were born in Sheffield and it felt fitting the charity we aligned with was

the Children’s Hospital and have since developed a close relationship with charity team there, both with work place incentives and fund raising alongside our personal efforts. We are ready to smash it!” Sophie Coburn, corporate partnerships officer at the Children’s Hospital Charity, added: “It is no surprise knowing all of these individuals, that they’ve chosen to climb the world’s tallest free-standing mountain for Sheffield Children’s Hospital. It’s a challenge which will test them to their limits, but it also matches the enthusiasm, dedication and affection they have for our hospital. Every penny they raise will support Sheffield Children’s where it’s needed most, including by building a new life-saving Helipad on the roof of the Emergency Department. Thank you so much.”

Kerry Russell

Legal director at Shakespeare Martineau. Could you start by explaining exactly what intellectual property is? Intellectual property is an asset that a person can own, sell, licence, mortgage etc. It is essentially a legal right to use works of intellectual creation to the exclusion of others. What are the earliest steps a business should take to protect its intellectual property? Speak to a specialist. Once you’ve identified what IP you might have, then you need to investigate whether those rights need to be registered with the Intellectual Property Office. All businesses will have IP in one form or another, and it all has value. You can access lots of useful free resources on IP, such as the UK Intellectual Property Office website, or your local Business and IP Centre. What are your biggest tips that a business should consider? If you have IP that can be registered it’s usually worthwhile finding out about the costs of registering. Also, think

68

about using NDAs (nondisclosure agreements) if you are discussing a new idea with potential investors, collaborators, customers or suppliers. Who should businesses in South Yorkshire seek advice from? South Yorkshire has lots of IP attorneys who can help. A qualified trade mark attorney can advise on protecting a brand, a patent attorney can help with registering patents and designs, and IP solicitors can help with identifying which rights you might have. What could happen if intellectual property isn’t protected? Intellectual property that is not properly protected could be used by third parties without any realistic possibility of the original creator bringing proceedings

to prevent the infringement and harm the chances of securing future investment. Could you briefly explain the law on intellectual property? There are various statutes. as well as common law, in the UK which govern the protection of IP in this territory. Typically IP rights are limited to the territory in which they are protected. Some IP rights only protect against copying, whereas other rights, such as trade marks, have a wider scope of protection. What kinds of intellectual property can be protected? Patents protect inventions and relate to either innovative products or processes. Trade marks protect logos, trading names, and sometimes other brand identifiers such as the shape of products or colours. Designs protect the appearance of products. Copyright protects literary, artistic, musical works as well as source code and parts of databases. Who has the rights to intellectual property? Intellectual property is typically owned by the person who creates the protected work. An exception to this is when the work is created by an employee in the course of their employment. It is possible to have joint owners of IP rights, although joint owners may have limited rights to exploit the IP or bring infringement proceedings.

COACHING

THE

UNLEARNING COMPANY: INSIGHT, INSPIRATION, IMPACT. The Unlearning Company helps individuals refine their approach to work through coaching that improves results, builds better relationships and transforms workplaces. Encouraging teams to work better together creates workplaces where people thrive.

Passionate about human potential, they aim to help those they work with sustain new skills and behaviours, using the principles of positive psychology to adopt new ways of thinking and working. Using coaching, The Unlearning Company provide an opportunity to explore how work is currently approached, identifying effective ways to achieve results and enabling teams to apply and sustain these discoveries. Using insights to understand their clients’ needs, they figure out where a company is currently at and what is

74

preventing its progress. Then, they use inspiration to inspire the next steps providing support through tricky terrains for the business. Everything they do is about impact and helping their clients experience sustained changes in how they work. Plus, they request regular feedback to enable their own insights, inspiration and impact internally. They help their clients to unlock a fresh perspective into their businesses and teach them about the impact of coaching. The Unlearning Company’s founder, Jonathan Cooper, shares his top tips for

improving behaviour in the workplace through coaching: “Workplaces are becoming increasingly complex places, and our businesses are operating in increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous environments. Therefore, our organisations must be places where our people feel safe making decisions so that customers are consistently delighted by what we do. Encourage managers to work together “Instead of encouraging first-line managers to work through

1.

their own managers, encourage them to work directly with other first-line managers. Line managers will become aware of the impact of their decisions on their colleagues, and customers, and improve workflow.” Encourage colleagues to ask for regular feedback “Requesting regular feedback from one another allows feedback to be much more helpful. If someone asks for feedback, it’s more likely to be delivered respectfully and taken on board with just as much respect.”

2.

COACHING CASE STUDY

ICEOTOPE One of the main programmes with The Unlearning Company explores the relationships within teams and how people can better work together to improve efficiency and effectiveness at work. unLTD caught up with Sally Clark and Stephan Hollingshead from Iceotope to hear their experiences of working with Jonathan on this project.

Leadership should be about coaching too “A coaching leadership style enables colleagues to own their work, achieve better results and solve problems much more rapidly. You will get an insight into how colleagues think, create an openness to feedback and build trust within your team.”

3.

Productive relationships in a workplace are vital, and behaviour can be changed to allow teamwork to come more naturally, ultimately improving the effectiveness of the business.

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

Iceotope is a Sheffieldbased precision immersion cooling company, offering chassis-level liquid cooling technologies to companies across the world. When chief finance and operating officer, Stephan Hollingshead, wanted to introduce some new processes within the business, he realised there was more work to do on their overall people strategy – particularly focusing on training and working collaboratively. It was this realisation that led Sally Clark, recruitment specialist, to get in touch with Jonathan Cooper at The Unlearning Company to start working on a bespoke training programme for Iceotope’s staff. Sally said: “I had worked with Jonathan previously and knew that his talent and expertise would benefit us greatly, so it seemed like the obvious thing to do to approach him in this case.” Stephan particularly wanted to change the ‘topdown’ approach to work, encouraging staff to take more initiative and to have more say in the day-to-day operations and practices. He said: “We wanted a better forum to see who worked well together. As we are a fast-moving business and we are evolving all the time, people are so busy they just focus on the tasks in

front of them. We wanted to give them the space and freedom to think more creatively and look at how they could solve problems within their daily working lives.” With that thought in mind, Jonathan developed a programme that would focus on the individual, the team and the organisation – titled Recharge, Reconnect and Refresh. Over a period of 12 months, he created processes and tools to support better one to ones and development reviews, coaching line managers in areas they found most difficult and facilitated a series of group workshops where they addressed topics like the components of a great meeting, communicating with confidence and team purpose. The team purpose

maps – which Sally refers to as an “absolute revelation” – helped people understand their impact on others and how they could work together to counteract workplace challenges. During the training, staff worked together to create a mini business proposal, with everyone communicating their own vision and feeding into the operational plan, coming up with ideas for how to make operations smoother and more effective. Using Print, Jonathan was also able to help staff better understand their motivations for working and what patterns and conditions enabled them to be their ‘best selves’. The training programme was a huge success, and Stephan says he has seen a “very tangible benefit” from the experience. He added: “We have now got a greater awareness of what we want to achieve and who works best in certain areas. Meetings are more efficient and all of our processes are so much quicker. “This is not a tired old training formula – it’s a journey. This is a far more open process that gives results you don’t get from a traditional programme. “I would highly recommend Jonathan to everyone, he has fantastic skills and offers a bespoke solution to any workplace problem.”

WORKPLACE

Katie Ash, head of employment law at Banner Jones, explains what businesses can do to support female employees.

With the average retirement age for women now 63 years old, it is likely that most workplaces will have women working with menopause symptoms now and in the future. According to the NHS, the average age for a woman to go through menopause in the UK is 51, but often symptoms can start for women in their 40s. And with the Fawcett Society stating that one in ten women left their job because of menopause symptoms, its impact on women is something employers can no longer ignore. What you can do Recognising the potential issues women may face and keeping communication lines open between line manager and employee is important. Anyone who is displaying menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, physical health problems, getting upset or struggling to keep up with work demands, may appreciate a friendly supportive ear. Training your leaders on what to look out for can help in those situations.

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

Work can be stressful and the competitive, faced-paced nature of many industries is a definite contributor to menopausal women feeling that they can’t cope. When devising a policy for dealing with menopause in your workplace, you may want to consider a better

Anyone who is displaying menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, physical health problems, getting upset may appreciate a friendly supportive ear.

balance between office and remote working, potentially reduced hours, regular catch ups, or a change in the office environment, such as adding more ventilation and natural light. Simple steps like these, as well as keeping an eye on workloads, can all help. It’s important to remember that you have a duty of care to employees and with the right care, employees will continue to flourish in a compassionate working environment, which is in everyone’s best interest. Katie says: “Putting a menopause policy in place for your business is worth considering, and training your management on what to look out for among their teams is very important. Training can be a vital part of your defence in a tribunal claim should you need it.” The risk if you ignore it Whilst the menopause may not be a disability under the Equality Act 2010, the effects of the symptoms can be disabling for women, and impact day to day activities. Employers who fail to properly

support women could be found to be discriminatory. A business must do all that’s practicably possibly to adapt the individual’s working environment and roles and responsibilities. Failing to do so could result in a breach of the Equality Act 2010 with a discrimination tribunal claim against you. The level of compensation in these types of claims is unlimited, so it’s important to seek advice as soon as possible. Katie says: “Banner Jones recognises the menopause needs to be highlighted in the workplace, so we recently signed the national Menopause Pledge and have introduced a menopause policy. By doing so, we promise to actively support women affected by the menopause by talking openly, positively, and respectfully about it. “If you want to discuss putting menopause into the spotlight in your business, then please get in touch.” Contact the team on 0344 558 7733 or visit: www. bannerjones.co.uk/contacts/ new

ACTION COACH

THE ROAD TO SUCCESS

Jon Asquith of Action Coach Sheffield speaks with client Daniel Stocks of DPS Facades about their work to grow Dan’s business and how Dan has built a team of industry specialists who all pull in the same direction.

Working with Dan over the last two years has shown how important courageous decision making is at the right time. The key to Dan’s success has been shown around a core value of his – “always hire people better than you”. It’s easy to sit in the ego seat and focus on being the smartest in the room, but Dan wants to learn from the room and company he is in. Here’s a snapshot of what Dan has done over the last two years.

before • Building a great team! This is my proudest achievement to date. For me, everything revolves around the team. If you were to offer advice to any entrepreneur reading this, what advice would you give them and why? It would have to be to invest as much as you can – in both your people and yourself. Build a team that pulls in the same direction and embraces your culture – and realise you need to be at your best to achieve your vision. Invest in coaches and mentors, who practice what they preach and can develop you into the person you need to reach your goals.

Tell us a little more about your business? I am the founder and CEO at DPS Facades Ltd. Since our incorporation back in 2007, we have grown from a small team of façade installers to a nationally recognised, specialist façade contractor that delivers the design, supply and installation of aluminium glazing systems and rainscreen cladding to multiple sectors across the whole of the UK. What growth have you seen in the last 12 months? We’ve experienced growth in every area of the business over the past twelve months, turnover has increased by 46 per cent, net profit by 2,620 per cent, the team has grown by 40 per cent. I have made immeasurable growth since I started working with Jon Asquith at Action Coach. Jon has worked with our whole team to develop many areas such as, but not limited to; better systems, leadership & management techniques, financial processes but most importantly, he’s been involved with our team

unLTDBUSINESS.COM

What’s next for you and the business? What should we look forward to seeing? Massive growth! Lets Talk – get in touch to chat about the health of your business, book a free 30 minute strategy call and see some of the tools we can use to help you grow www.sheffield.actioncoach. co.uk/callme/ development and structure. What would you say has been the biggest thing you’ve done in the last year? We’ve had a productive year and made some fantastic progress given the difficult period we’ve all been through during the pandemic. I would say the three biggest things are: • Working with Jon from

Action Coach on a weekly basis. The coaching, education, confidence, skills and accountability that Jon brings to the whole team are a major factor in our success • Setting up a new company called Revo Fabrications. Revo manufactures our aluminium glazing system products and allows us to control the quality, delivery and costs better than ever

WHAT MAKES SHEFFIELD CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL SO SPECIAL? MEET DR DAN YEOMANSON, CONSULTANT PAEDIATRIC ONCOLOGIST I’ve been working at Sheffield Children’s for almost 20 years, and I’ve been a consultant on our Cancer and Leukaemia Ward for more than a decade. It’s a fantastic place and there’s a great sense of camaraderie and friendship within our team. My role involves looking after patients, I enjoy meeting them and helping make them better. On a simple level, that often means making it fun for children to come to the hospital wherever I can. The ward at Sheffield Children’s sees between 90 and 100 patients every year from across South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and North Derbyshire as well as undertaking bone marrow transplants for patients from further afield.

The treatment offered at Sheffield Children’s includes chemotherapy for both inpatients and outpatients, surgery and high-dose chemotherapy for patients with solid tumours or leukaemia. Thanks to donations to The Children’s Hospital Charity, we have recently moved onto a new state-of-the-art ward. It’s brilliant, complete with bright, open spaces, bigger bedrooms and views over Weston Park. Working on the new ward feels amazing. It’s a privilege to work here at Sheffield Children’s and I’m very proud to be a part of such a talented and dedicated team. NOMINATE YOUR FAVOURITE CHARITY FOR THEM TO BE IN WITH A CHANCE OF GETTING UP TO A 5,000 DONATION Sheffield Mutual Friendly Society has begun the nomination process for its annual charity award. Since being launched in 2017, the popularity and interest in the award has grown continually, and this year is expected to be the most popular to date. Every year Sheffield Mutual asks its members and the public to nominate their favourite charities. The nominated charities are shortlisted to a final ten by the charity team, and it then goes to a public vote. This allows the charities to gain votes from their supporters and increase their chances of getting a donation. The top three charities are awarded the following donation amounts. The first place receives £5,000, the second place

receives £1,500, and the third-place receives £1,000. Nominations close on June 30 2022. The top ten will be announced, and voting begins after. Charities will have until October 31 2022 to get as many votes as possible before voting closes. The winners from 2021 were Raven’s Rescue, Abbie’s Amry and Rush House. Sarah Price, from Raven’s Rescue, said: “This is amazing, and we cannot thank you enough! We recently took in two puppies that need urgent medical treatment, and the Sheffield Mutual award will improve their quality of life and help towards vet treatments for some of our other rescues too.” If you wish to nominate a charity or find out more: https://tinyurl.com/3sxrat8d

NHS £19million a year, and as well as transforming human lives, Support Dogs, prides itself on being a charity that gives unwanted pets or dogs from rescue centres a second chance. Despite the Covid pandemic leading to longer waits for its services and a drop in income, 2022 Support Dogs is looking to expand to provide more help for more desperate families. It receives no government funding to fund its work but relies entirely on the public's generosity through donations and fundraising, from abseils to skydives and sponsored challenges, from dogs and doughnut days to corporate events and sponsorship. CHARITY SPONSORED BY LET'S SAVE

WORK SMARTER, NOT HARDER, TO MAXIMISE YOUR IMPACT I have recently been approached by a couple of charities to undertake some business planning. These have been established charities, where you would think that they would have a handle on strategy and planning, but COVID-19 has changed their project delivery and impact on their beneficiaries. Many organisations just stepped up to the mark when the pandemic hit, closing the doors, but they kept listening to their beneficiaries and they kept reaching out and supporting their needs – as varied as these were and as changing as they were. What is now the case is that Articles of Association are out of date and don’t necessarily relate to what the charity is trying to deliver in their

objects now. Many CEOs have found that their policies and procedures are out of date since they were last reviewed prior to COVID-19. Make sure that what you want to achieve is matched by your documentation with the Charity Commission or the CIC Regulator. Funders will do their due diligence and if what you want to deliver isn’t in the Constitution objects, they won’t fund you and all that time and energy of making that funding application will be wasted. Work smarter and not harder within your organisation to maximise your impact. Consider reviewing your Constitution, policies and procedures post COVID and call me for a chat if you feel I can help. KING ECGBERT’S BUSINESS BRAINS RAISE MORE THAN 5,000 FOR ST LUKE’S Sixth form students at Sheffield’s King Ecgbert’s School demonstrated their heads for business when they raised more than £5,000 for St Luke’s Hospice. The sixth form’s 15 form groups each worked in teams to turn their £10 seed funds into as much money as possible for the charity in just eight weeks. Among their fundraising ideas were bake sales, auctions, sweet sales, raffles and a sponsored haircut for a member of staff – all raising a total of £5568.37. At the end of the two-month fundraising marathon, the teams made presentations to St Luke’s outlining how the money had grown. Matt Sheridan, St Luke’s Fundraising account manager, said: “We have been absolutely impressed by the professionalism, dedication and enthusiasm of the King Ecgbert’s Angels. “The presentations were brilliant and the whole panel was really blown away by the level of maturity and positivity shown by all involved.”
