Is lighting a candle at home and curling up on the couch not a good enough reading experience for you? Maybe you’re tired of the vibe you have at home or you want to experience something a little more magical. The Garden of Readen is the perfect bookshop for those who are itching to add a little more adventure to their reading journeys. With its location in a botanical garden, readers can enjoy their own scenic walk before settling down to delve into the realm of fantasy and folklore. The Garden of Readen provides the ultimate immersive experience for fantasy lovers of all ages.
Garden of Readen is a cozy bookstore made for bookworms who love fantasy & folklore. Located in the Leach Botanical Garden just out of Portland, Oregon, the lush greenery and tall trees help give the perfect entrance to this magical bookstore. Keeping the integrity of the property, readers will walk into a calm and comfortable cabin that embraces the surrounding trees by keeping some of them in the building. Our readers can curl up on a comfortable couch and read to the sounds of the forest and rain, or they can take their book with them while strolling in the garden. The books that they can choose from range from traditional fairy tales and folklore to modern fantasy novels. We want our readers to feel like they’ve immersed themselves in their own fantasy world.
Our audience are comprised of quiet readers who love:
● Fantasy & folklore
● Comfortable & cozy reading spaces
● Nature & rainy day reading
Garden of Readen’s identity is full of old folklore references and concept art. While our bookstore is made to feel like a “stumbledacross-cabin,” it will still have modern elements such as painted murals of fairy tales and short stories on the walls. The furniture is eclectic and mismatched; whether it’s a mushroom chair or a wooden table, we want to mix past and present styles to keep the interest of our readers.
Our first design goal is have a color palette that reflects the mood and ambiance of the space provided. We chose earthy tones (green, cream, brown) with pops of warm colors (red and orange) to help bring the space together. This way, the furniture won’t clash with the artwork on the walls. Our second goal is to tie in the fairy & folklore theme back in so our readers aren’t confused as to why there are only 2 genres of books to choose from. We decided to incorporate concept art of fairy tales onto our walls coupled with short, readable stories from them. Furthermore, the sitting/reading areas of the bookstore will reference fairy tales where life is larger than humans experience it. Examples include mushroom tables with “log” benches or hidden nooks that look like they’re inside of a tree. This way, we can effectively combine our natural environment with common fairy tale locations. (Think “Hansel & Gretel,” “The Secret World of Arriety,” etc.)
To further increase sales in our bookstore, we will also be selling merchandise featuring our logo on it. While most logos are modern and simple, we want to keep ours relatively traditional by making it “stamp-like,” similar to wax seal stamps from the 13th century. This will help our products have a “hand-crafted” feel to it, which help readers step further into a fantasy world.
The colors chosen for Garden of Readen represent the apple in “Garden of Eden.” Red is a classic and bold color used in many fantasy stories such as Little Red Riding Hood and Snow White.

The Garden of Readen’s circular logo is based off of 13th centruy wax seals, which were often used to seal documents with family crests.
1. The apple references Eve’s bitten apple, and the open book shows that we’re a bookstore.
2. The book references our bookstore, where we can read about different fantasy and folklore journeys.
3. The lines coming out of the book give atmosphere for the "magical" effect of the apple and the book.
The entrance sign is circular to accomodate the logo. Installation will go at the entrance of the bookshop. Material is wood for the sign and metal for the post.
