Second Life concert donates to Japan Electronic book signing A real life couple (who are also married in the virtual world of Second Life), felt compelled to raise money for relief in Japan following the devastating earthquake and tsunami. Organizing a music concert in Second Life called Love for Japan, the couple intended for 100% of the proceeds to go to the cause. Roto Diesel and Mariella Deezul commissioned five musicians and DJs to perform on April 2, 2011. Donations, sales from concert t-shirts and a raffle were all collected toward the fundraiser. The concert far exceeded the initial goal of raising L$50,000 Linden dollars by more than double. Generous efforts can certainly translate from a virtual world to reality thanks to a creative digital medium such as Second Life.
E-Book Signing on Nook Color By Zeenath Haniff
Remember when you had to stand in line for the chance to meet an author and get their signature in their latest hardcover book? What if you purchased an e-book instead? Barnes & Noble’s Nook Color has added the ability to get the author’s digital signature using a stylus rather than an ink pen. To debut the e-book signing, Barnes & Noble’s Upper East Side store is hosting an e-book signing of Sandra Boynton’s children’s book entitled “The Going to Bed Book”. Children and their parents will still have to go to the bookstore with their e-reader for the signing.
The trend is being followed by using the handwriting capabilities of other ereaders including the Sony Reader, which allows users to handwrite on the digital pages. Autography is a company that enables authors and artists to personalize their digital works in three ways: 1. In-Person Author Signing 2. Autographed After Purchase, includes a personalized note upon request 3. Autographed Sample Chapters For more information, visit: http://www.autography.us.com/
YouTube as the next Netflix? By Zeenath Haniff
Following in the footsteps of online video-rental pioneer Netflix, YouTube will provide an online movie rental service for premium titles from Sony Pictures Entertainment, Warner Brothers, and Universal. Originally testing five films for the Sundance Film Festival, YouTube’s early experiment appears to have motivated its interest in trying out a full service.
Currently, YouTube does offer indie film rentals at $2.99 and now wants to catalog movies from major film studios on a pay-per-view basis. This move comes on the heels of Google’s failed attempt to add a payment structure to its Google Video. The video-sharing service has since been removed, thus opening the floor for YouTube’s video venture.
