Siri Copycat Qik Video Recorder

“Qik” Journalism By Zeenath Haniff

Are you a journalist? Then think “qik”! Among the ever-growing list of job requirements is keeping up with the demand for instant gratification. Journalists need to be able to quickly record and share video on multiple social networking sites. Reporting live or breaking news can be just that simple with the right tools. In comes Qik to the rescue, the latest in instantaneous digital journalism. The free mobile app allows journalists to record and post live-streaming video using their

phone with a quick upload to Facebook, Youtube and Twitter. All that is needed is a phone with a built-in camera...and a good story to capture! Video streams can be embedded into a blog or webpage, and even tagged or geotagged. The only catch is that there is no editing tool with the mobile app aside from a zoom feature and a few filters. This video recording tool may just be the digital journalist’s new best friend. See more: http://qik.com/

Siri has a Sinister Sibling By Zeenath Haniff

Android developers produced their own version of Apple’s highly successful Siri, naming her Evi. Available on the iTunes App Store since late January 2012, the rival digital assistant is also powered by audio commands. Siri’s primary function is to connect user requests to the iPhone’s iOS 5 features such as Calendar and Reminders. Evi is designed to assist and provide relevant websites. But consumers say Evi outshines Siri on a number of points—she works

particularly well as a voice-activated search and is also accessible via keyboard input. The Android app can be downloaded for iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. Seemingly hitting too close to home, Apple claims the virtual assistant is too similar to its own Siri and risks confusing consumers. The solution? Evi must change her UI to stay in business as Apple continues its incessant battle of the apps. Will Evi survive? Only time will tell.

Tips for the Digital Journalist How to record video on your phone By Zeenath Haniff

Get close. Submit articles and questions to the Virtual & Digital Media office via email:

The further you are from the subject, the less you can see (and hear). Zooming can be problematic as going in too close creates a blur. It is better to get physically close to what you are shooting rather than zoom. 2. Watch the screen.

5. Record horizontally.

What you see on the screen of your mobile device is what viewers will see on the finished video. Fit the frame around your intended subject with as much or as little of the surroundings as you’d like seen before pressing the record button. 3. Beware of noise.

Typically, holding your phone upright to record creates a tall image, consequently resulting in black bars on both sides of the video. Instead, simply turning your phone 90° sideways to record horizontally will display as a widescreen video. 6. Plan and pan slowly.

Remember that the microphone on your phone is designed for you to speak directly into the microphone, not for recording audio. But it captures all the sounds around you, including background noises. Try to isolate voices or sounds accordingly. 4. Steady hands. A shaky hand makes for a shaky video. The best solution is to either prop your phone on any available surface, stabilize your elbow or arm on a flat surface or hold your phone with both hands and keep as still as possible.

If you need to pan to capture movement or get a full view of the surroundings, plan your path before you record for an uninterrupted stream. Pan at the slowest possible pace to avoid any jerking in the video. 7. Record and save in high-res. It may take up space on your phone, but recording in the highest quality then saving in the highest resolution will offer the most impressive video quality. Aim for 640-by-480-pixel videos at 30 fps.
