We’re all talking about the coming of the digital age and where this new phenomenon will take us. But that digital revolution has also ignited another movement: going green. Efforts to become more environmentally conscious are widespread. The biggest worry in the past several decades has been the production of electronic waste. By manufacturing non-sustainable, non -renewable gadgets, are we really saving the environment or are we creating more pollution? One argument has been that electronics are saving oxygen-producing trees from being cut down and used for pa-

As the battle continues, advocates for both sides continue to offer endless examples of the other’s waste and supposed misconception of their green efforts. Will we ever really know?

The Salvation Army’s token red kettles may have competition as donations are going digital this year. With less people carrying change or bills in their pockets, the Salvation Army is experimenting with using Square, a device attached to a mobile phone for credit card payments, for the convenience of donors. Green is the New Black Many companies are switching from monthly statements printed with traditional black ink to now providing paperless billing via email or web to promote green efforts, reduce the cost of printing and mailing bills as well as expedite secure payments. A few local businesses offering paperless billing are: 

U.S. Recycling Laws A report by the Government Accounting Office provides that although the United States has not adopted a national campaign to promote recycling of electronic waste, 23 states have already enacted laws mandating e-waste recycling, with several more following in their footsteps through a Producer Responsibility regulation. States with laws: 

Most of these states enacted laws beginning in 2007 and 2008.

Electronic products under these laws include computers, computer monitors, printers and televisions.

Manufacturers must pay for the cost of recycling electronic products.
