An encyclopedia is the ultimate resource for general knowledge—a wealth of scholarly information at your fingertips, containing a multitude of references neatly organized in alphabetical order.

printed. By shifting to an online database, Encyclopædia Britannica can continuously update, be accessible on mobile devices and even offer “social connections” to various resources.

Encyclopædia Britannica, the oldest English-language encyclopedia, is ending production of its printed book set. Formerly updated every two years, the last printed edition was released in 2010 and contained 32 volumes. Instead, the 244-yearold publication from Scotland will offer its vast resources strictly in digital form in lieu of a 2012 print.

Before discontinuing their print edition and moving exclusively online, Encyclopædia Britannica will sell the remaining 4,000 sets of the 2010 edition from their inventory of 12,000 book sets.

Currently, the print version accounts for less than 1 percent of the company’s total sales. Priced at a hefty $1,395.00 per set, the cost of the printed encyclopedia has far outweighed its nearly 130 pounds’ worth of information. Britannica Online costs $70 for an annual subscription while mobile users pay $1.99-$4.99 per month for the app. The low cost coupled with ease of search and additional resources boasts 100 million digital users. In the 1980s, the company began experimenting with digital publishing, offering a computer version through LexisNexis, then issuing its first CD-ROM edition in 1981 and later going online in 1994. Over 100 editors and countless expert contributors to Encyclopædia Britannica continue to ensure the quality of the publication with the likes of Sigmund Freud, Marie Curie and Bill Clinton. And with that, another one bites the dust as digital overtakes a historic print publication.
