FROM THE DIRECTOR ’S DESK
Kathleen KnothJust as we are seeing flower bulbs popping up through the soil and prairie dogs popping their heads out of their underground homes, our students are seeing the midterm assignments popping up on the syllabus. Projects, term papers, tests, oh my! Never fear, YOUR college library is here.
Altogether there is over 70 years of experience with the three full time library staff in Dave Mansfield, Kayla Platoff and myself along with our very competent student employee Madelynn Gonzales-Mascareñas. YOUR library offers not only the competence and experience but also, the caring and compassion it takes to help you get over your academic hurdles.
YOUR college library may be very professional but they can bring on the fun as well. Last month, YOUR library held its 19th Annual Love YOUR Library event. The first live event since 2020 turned out to be quite a success with 10 trivia teams registered, delicious food from Tiwa Kitchen, and participants who just came for a good time. The best is when you meet people who had never been to the college before. That’s the sign of a successful program. Aaaand, drum roll please, the trivia team winner was the Ancient Aliens Dos team consisting of Nina Bar-Giora, Jeans Pineda and Bob Okeke!
Another annual program that YOUR Library gets excited about each year is El Dia de los Niños/ El Dia de los Libros celebration. We have been collaborating with schools and childcare centers across the community to help instill the love of literacy for over 10 years. This year we are joining in the Harwood Museum’s Centennial celebration in conjunction with the Taos Public Library and will be offering storytime at the museum on April 30th. We are excited to read stories and offer activities to the whole community in such an inspiring setting.
And, speaking of inspiring, please note you can still submit your poem, essay, photo or video for publication in the annual UNM-Taos literary and arts digital magazine, “The HOWL: Art & Literary Journal”. The deadline for submission is March 31. Go to www.unmtaosart.com/apply-howl2023 to submit or e-mail taosarts@unm.edu if you have further questions. Just like YOUR college library is open to everyone, “The HOWL” accepts works from the greater community as well as students, staff, faculty and alumni.
So, just as the flowers are popping up we want to see your synapses popping. Come check out a book at YOUR library, register for a college class, or share your creativity in the upcoming HOWL.
“Be faithful to that which exists within yourself.”
