ACADEMIC YEAR 2019-20

ENROLLMENT GUIDE

THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO - TAOS

WELCOME

On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff, I would like to welcome you to the 2019 - 2020 academic year at UNM-Taos. This is an exciting time in our college’s history! In the past two years, we have expanded our academic and certificate programs and simplified the many career pathways available to our students, increased technology in our classrooms, invested in campus infrastructure, and we will open a new Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) building in fall 2019. Tied to all of these improvements, and the college’s most important focus, is student success. We have created student success programs that align with our enrollment, financial aid, and advisement services, focused on increasing student retention, persistence, and graduation. Throughout this enrollment guide, you will find information that supports UNM-Taos’ commitment to enhancing the student experience, serving the workforce and economic needs of Taos, Taos County, and the greater north-central New Mexico region. Have a wonderful academic year! Patrick L. Valdez, Ph.D. Chief Executive Officer

Welcome to the 2019-2020 academic year! We are excited to offer you new and continuing programs that match your career and educational needs and interests. We offer a variety of degrees, certificates, and workforce preparation programs and a number of delivery formats (face to face, hybrid, hyflex, and online). We are here to assist you in choosing the best pathways to meet your educational goals. Please carefully review this enrollment guide and our website (http://taos.unm. edu/) for specific information on how to enroll and/or register for summer, fall, and spring courses. Our website also has more information on program requirements, course schedules, and course descriptions. As Dean of Instruction, I am committed to helping you through this educational process and it is my hope that you will find educational, career, and personal fulfillment and success here at UNM-Taos. Randi Archuleta, Ph.D. Dean of Instruction

WHY UNM-TAOS?

to a successful conclusion. Parents, grandparents and siblings come to UNM-Taos to serve as positive role models, knowing that first generation college students make it easier for the next generation to follow.

Many people choose UNM-Taos as a path to broader horizons

Some new arrivals to Taos see the UNM-Taos community of learning as a way to get to know the region and its people better, while others want to get that first degree under their belt in order to move on to a four year university.

Location The spectacular, four-seasons vistas of Taos Valley and the Sangre de Cristo mountains are an inspiration to students, faculty and staff. Why leave town when there is so much to experience here? Ask for a tour of the 80 acre Klauer Campus and our downtown location, and you’ll understand how tens of millions of dollars, well-placed, can transform the student experience.

That personal touch We pride ourselves in offering small classes, because in education a close, one-on-one relationship between student and faculty simply works the best. We have academic advisors, specialized programs, free tutoring, computer bays and library facilities to help you through the learning process.

and a better income, a career change or simply the personal pride that comes from committing to a challenging task and following it through

Affordability At $78 per credit hour, we are one of the most affordable higher education choices in the state. That’s less than half the cost of most four-year public universities, and when it comes to the private and for-profit universities, well, they aren’t even in our league. Combine this with a robust scholarship program, financial aid and the opportunity to live at home (we’re the only higher education choice within a 50 mile radius) and you’ll soon see why UNMTaos is a wise economic choice.

Quality faculty makes all the difference UNM-Taos is a fully accredited higher education institution as determined by the Higher Learning Commission. Our Master’s and PhD level instructors compare favorably with any other faculty in terms of higher degree attainment, and our faculty-to-student ratio is among the best. Want more? Our mission is to provide quality, affordable education opportunities that transform the lives of our students, enrich the cultural life of our diverse communities, and strengthen the regional economy. We are an open enrollment institution that holds access and diversity in the highest esteem. Get your Associate Degree or Certificate here and the path to academic or career success is only limited by your personal needs and determination.

COMMON COURSE NUMBERING

It is an exciting time in higher education in New Mexico! You will notice this year’s Enrollment Guide has some fairly significant changes. These changes are mostly due in part to two legislative actions passed in previous years: Common Course Numbering and General Education. Common Course Numbering (CCN)

CCN refers to Common Course Numbering. State legislation passed in 2017 requires that lower division courses (formerly 100 and 200 level) share common subject codes and four-digit numbers from institution to institution when it can be determined that the courses have 80% student learning outcomes in common. The goal of CCN is to improve ease of transfer. How is the Enrollment Guide impacted? We’ve made notations on our Subject Listing with those changes that have impacted UNM Taos’ schedule. For additional information, please contact Academic Advising or the Department of Instruction at 575-737-6225 or taosadvise@unm.edu.

General Education

Two General Education models were developed and must be adopted by all of New Mexico’s public higher education institutions.

For Associate and Bachelor degrees 31 credit hours (excluding Associate of Applied Science Degrees)

For Associate of Applied Science Degrees 15 credit hours

Fixed 22 At least 22 credit hours of courses in the following six content areas:

How is the Enrollment Guide impacted? We will be updating our Associate degree curriculum and UNM Core sheet during the 2019-2020 academic year. For this reason, we have removed the course numbers on the respective Associate degree descriptions and UNM Core sheet, previously included in the guide. For additional information, please contact Academic Advising or the Department of Instruction at 575-737-6225 or taosadvise@ unm.edu.

PLEASE NOTE: Your instructor will not automatically drop you if you stop attending class and you may receive a failing grade. Cancellation Due to Lack of Financial Commitment Students who fail to pay their full tuition and fees (including second 8-week courses or second 4 week courses in summer) or have not made financial arrangements with the cashier’s office on or before 5:00pm on the scheduled financial date will have their registration canceled and will be disenrolled from all classes. Course Wait List A wait list is an electronic list of students who are waiting to register for a full class. Students may sign up for this when they attempt to register for a section that has reached its capacity. The first student on the registration wait list is notified via email when a space becomes available. This student then has a maximum of 48 hours (24 hours once the semester starts) or until 5pm on the Add Deadline Date, whichever comes first, to register for the section. If the student does not register for the section within this time frame, he/ she will be dropped from the wait list

for that section and the next student on the list will be notified. Course Wait List Policies and Procedures 1. Any eligible student wishing to enroll in a course that has reached its authorized capacity may add themselves to one section of that course’s wait list. A student is wait listed in the order in which s/he attempts to register for the course. 2. A student on the wait list is not officially enrolled in that course and is not eligible to receive a grade in that course. 3. Being on the wait list does not guarantee registration in the class or that a new section will be made available for the same time frame or instructor. 4. A student on a wait list may attend the wait listed course, if seating is available and with the instructor’s permission. 5. Students on a wait list will have conflicts checked with prerequisites, but not duplicate

Students can be on a wait list for a course with the same course number, but a different section number than the section that they are enrolled in. 6. Students must meet all registration requirements before being allowed on a wait list. 7. It is the responsibility of the student to check the status of the wait list. If the student no longer wishes to remain on the wait list, they should drop it through LoboWeb. 8. Not all sections have wait lists. Off-pattern/open learning courses scheduled outside a regular term may not be set up with wait lists at this time. 9. Instructors have the right to increase course capacity to allow specific students to enroll in their class. *Wait list goes away the first Friday of the semester for 16 week courses. PLEASE NOTE: Failure to add/drop courses by the published deadlines could affect your Financial Aid Award. Please see the Financial Aid Office before processing any add/drop transactions after the published deadlines.
