WHY UNM-TAOS I am so happy to be joining you as your new chancellor. As we are returning to the campus, we will all have adjustments to make. We have to get used to being around more people again and interacting with others. I encourage you to be extra patient with yourselves and each other. Things may take a little more time. It will take a little bit to get used to traffic, to more people, to sound again. I invite you to pay attention to what you and others are feeling as you’re adjusting to returning to campus. Students are at the center of our work. It will be great to see students back on campus and continue to serve students in the ways that will best meet their needs. Our joy and our calling is empowering our students with education to make a difference in their lives and their families' lives. Mary Gutierrez, Ed.D. Chancellor UNM-Taos
Many people choose UNM-Taos as a path to broader horizons and a better income, a career change or simply the personal pride that comes from committing to a challenging task and following it through to a successful conclusion. Parents, grandparents, and siblings come to UNM-Taos to serve as positive role models, knowing that firstgeneration college students make it easier for the next generation to follow. Some new arrivals to Taos see the UNM-Taos community of learning as a way to get to know the region and its people better, while others want to get that first degree under their belt in order to move on to a four-year university. Location
The spectacular, four-season vistas of Taos Valley and the Sangre de Cristo mountains are an inspiration to students, faculty, and staff. Why leave town when there is so much to experience here? You will understand how tens of millions of well-placed dollars can transform the student experience.
Affordable
At $78 per credit hour, we are one of the most affordable higher education choices in the state. That’s less than half the cost of most four-year public universities, and when it comes to the private and for-profit universities, well, they aren’t even in our league. Combine this with a robust scholarship program, financial aid, and the opportunity to live at home (we’re the only higher education choice within a 50-mile radius) and you’ll soon see why UNM-Taos is a wise economic choice.
That personal touch
We pride ourselves in offering small classes, because in education a close, one-on-one relationship between student and faculty simply works the best. We have academic advisors, specialized programs, free tutoring, assistance with technology, and library services — all with robust remote platforms — to support you through the learning process.
Quality faculty makes all the difference
UNM-Taos is a fully accredited higher education institution as determined by the Higher Learning Commission. Our instructors are trained in online teaching and student engagements, and our faculty-to-student ratio is among the best.
LOCATION AFFORDABLE PERSONAL TOUCH QUALITY FACULTY COMMUNITY The 'Community’s College' Our mission is to provide quality, affordable education opportunities that transform the lives of our students, enrich the cultural life of our diverse communities, and strengthen the regional economy. We are an open enrollment institution that holds access and diversity in the highest esteem. Get your Associate Degree or Certificate here. The path to academic or career success is only limited by your personal needs and determination.

CREDIT HOURS
A unit that a college uses to show that you have completed and passed the courses that you need to finish a degree. Each college decides how many and what type of credits a student needs to earn a degree. The most common course type is the 3-credit course. There is also an assumption that students will spend about 2 hours on homework for every 1 hour in the classroom.
CERTIFICATE
An academic credential that is awarded when a student successfully completes a program, consisting of several courses. Certificate programs are smaller than degree programs, and they relate to specific jobs or skills.
GENERAL EDUCATION
General education (or Gen Ed) refers to required courses for a degree other than courses in the student’s major.
