WELCOME

On behalf of the faculty and staff, I would like to welcome you to the 2018 Spring Semester at UNM-Taos. Whether you are a new or returning student, you have arrived here at an exciting time in our college’s history. In addition to this enrollment guide, we have expanded our academic programs and simplified the many career pathways available to you. We have been approved to move ahead with the long-awaited Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) building. We have received federal funding for the continuation of our many student success programs, and aligned our enrollment, financial aid, and advisement to enhance your student experience. As a relative newcomer myself, I know it can be a challenge at first, to figure out where things are, how they work and who to see when you need help. Whatever your personal path may be, I want you to know that we are committed to your success and to offering an educational experience that honors our roots in this community. In doing so, we will provide you with a local education that opens the door to global career opportunities, all under the auspices of the University of New Mexico---the state’s flagship university. I’m proud to be a part of the UNM-Taos experience, and I hope you are, too. Stay local. Think global. Go Lobo! Have a wonderful semester!

Patrick L. Valdez, Ph.D. Chief Executive Officer

Welcome to the new, improved Spring 2018 Enrollment Guide! In these pages you’ll find all the information you need to enroll for Spring semester at UNM-Taos: important dates and contact information, a simplified step-by-step enrollment checklist, descriptions of associate degrees and certificates, specialized programs, student services, advising and much more. It’s what makes up the UNMTaos experience. But what you won’t find is that familiar listing of all the classes offered in the spring; we have moved the complete schedule of classes, along with class descriptions, to our website, taos.unm.edu. In this digital age, any change in time, day, location, section or instructor can be posted on the website almost immediately. If a class fills, or is cancelled for lack of enrollment, you’ll know it right away, since the online version is updated daily right up to the first day of class. If you don’t have a computer at home, or if online isn’t your favorite place to navigate, don’t despair. You can call the Enrollment Office at 737-6215 for quick answers to your questions, or go to the front desk in Padre Martinez Hall on Klauer Campus to get on a computer or ask for hands-on, personalized help from our friendly staff.

WHY CHOOSE UNM-TAOS? Many people choose UNM-Taos as a path to broader horizons and a better income, a career change or simply the personal pride that comes from committing to a challenging task and following it through to a successful conclusion. Location The spectacular, four-seasons vistas of Taos Valley and the Sangre de Cristo mountains are an inspiration to students, faculty and staff. Why leave town when there is so much to experience here? Ask for a tour of the 80 acre Klauer Campus and our downtown location, and you’ll understand how tens of millions of dollars, well-placed, can transform the student experience. Affordability At $78 per credit hour, we are one of the most affordable higher education choices in the state. That’s less than half the cost of most four-year public universities, and when it comes to the private and for-profit universities, well, they aren’t even in our league. Combine this with a robust scholarship program, financial aid and the opportunity to live at home (we’re the only higher education choice within a 50 mile radius) and you’ll soon see why UNMTaos is a wise economic choice.

Parents, grandparents and siblings come to UNM-Taos to serve as positive role models, knowing that first generation college students make it easier for the next generation to follow. Some new arrivals to Taos see the UNM-Taos community of learning as a way to get to know the region and its people better, while others want to get that first degree under their belt in order to move on to a four year university.

That personal touch We pride ourselves in offering small classes, because in education a close, one-on-one relationship between student and faculty simply works the best. We have academic advisors, specialized programs, free tutoring, computer bays and library facilities to help you through the learning process. Quality faculty makes all the difference UNM-Taos is a fully accredited higher education institution as determined by the Higher Learning Commission. Our Master’s and PhD level instructors compare favorably with any other faculty in terms of higher degree attainment, and our faculty-to-student ratio is among the best. Want more? Our mission is to provide quality, affordable education opportunities that transform the lives of our students, enrich the cultural life of our diverse communities, and strengthen the regional economy. We are an open enrollment institution that holds access and diversity in the highest esteem. Get your Associate Degree or Certificate here and the path to academic or career success is only limited by your personal needs and determination.

Community Health Worker (CHW)

Construction Technology (CNST)

CERTIFICATE The proposed Certificate Degree in Community Health is intended to prepare current and prospective frontline public health workers, commonly known as Community Health Workers (CHWs), with a foundational set of skills and knowledge which will enable them to assist individuals, families, groups, and communities to enhance their health, access services, engage in self-management and improve the conditions for health, especially in underserved communities. Community Health Workers have been at the forefront of advancing community-level prevention, facilitating access to preventive services, improving health outcomes, and enabling the expansion and efficacy of team-based health care. The program meets New Mexico Department of Health (NM-DOH) standards for state certification of CHWs for direct entry into the field, builds on those standards by aligning with the industry-recognized national CHW Common Core (C3), integrates feedback and priorities from local frontline health workers and their employers, and also serves as an educational and professional gateway to associate and undergraduate degrees in community and population health (‘discovery’ majors). The proposed Certificate in Community Health meets these training needs in New Mexico, where we experience some of the worst health indicators, outcomes, and disparities in the nation. If a student cannot provide the documentation requested he/she will have to pay back all financial aid they received for that semester.

PLEASE NOTE: Your instructor will not automatically drop you if you stop attending class and you may receive a failing grade. Cancellation Due to Lack of Financial Commitment Students who fail to pay their full tuition and fees (including second 8-week courses or second 4 week courses in summer) or have not made financial arrangements with the cashier’s office on or before 5:00pm on the scheduled financial disenrollment deadline date will have their registration canceled and will be disenrolled from all classes. Course Wait List A wait list is an electronic list of students who are waiting to register for a full class. Students may sign up for this when they attempt to register for a section that has reached

its capacity. The first student on the registration wait list is notified via email when a space becomes available. This student then has a maximum of 48 hours (24 hours once the semester starts) or until 5pm on the Add Deadline Date, whichever comes first, to register for the section. If the student does not register for the section within this time frame, he/ she will be dropped from the wait list for that section and the next student on the list will be notified. Course Wait List Policies and Procedures 1. Any eligible student wishing to enroll in a course that has reached its authorized capacity may add themselves to one section of that course’s wait list. A student is wait listed in the order in which s/he attempts to register for the course. 2. A student on the wait list is not officially enrolled in that course and is not eligible to receive a grade in that course. 3. Being on the wait list does not guarantee registration in the class or that a new section will be made available for the same time frame or instructor. 4. A student on a wait list may attend the wait listed course, if seating is available and with the instructor’s permission.

5. Students on a wait list will have conflicts checked with prerequisites, but not duplicate For the most current class information and course descriptions visit: http://taos.unm.edu/schedule 575-737-6215
