To Students, Staff, Faculty and Community Members, As many of you know by now, I have announced that I will be stepping down from my post as UNM-Taos Executive Director at the end of July. I took the reins as Director in June 2006, and now, ten years later, we have much to show for our efforts. Most important of all is the steady increase in student enrollment. In 2006 UNM-Taos enrolled 1,100 students (up from 250 in 1994). Today we enroll 1,750 per semester. We had 10 full-time faculty in 2006. Today there are 20. We had 60 staff, now there are over 80, and we have more than 125 dedicated adjunct faculty every semester. We have added infrastructure, landscaping, improved IT and 8 new or renovated buildings and 4 portables to expand the campus at Klauer and downtown Taos. We have streamlined programs, added more tutoring, enhanced advising and added a host of special programs for Veterans, Native American students, and others. On a personal note, I want to express my gratitude to the Taos and UNM/UNM-Taos communities for all of your support and teamwork over the years. This is an amazing campus with enormous potential, from our dual credit high school students to the dedicated faculty and staff, to our tireless legislators, Representative Bobby Gonzales and Senator Carlos Cisneros. “The Little College that Could” is definitely a team effort. Special thanks to Dr. Martinez “Marty” Hewlett who will be stepping in as Interim CEO. The college will be in excellent hands under his stewardship. I will be back in the classroom in August, 2017, but until then, thank you for all you do to help make UNM-Taos truly the community’s college.
Best Regards, Dr. Kate O’Neill Outgoing CEO Associate Professor of Psychology

Academic Advisement
ACADEMIC ADVISING: YOUR KEY TO SUCCESS
UNM-Taos Academic Advisors support students to ensure successful progression to graduation. Students are encouraged to meet with their academic advisor every semester. • Understand Your Certificate or Associate Degree. One size does not fit all. Academic Advisors listen to the needs and wants of each student to collectively create a plan toward degree completion. • Do More Than Make a Class Schedule. In addition to helping students choose classes for the semester, Academic Advisors guide decision-making regarding how students’ time at UNM-Taos can help them transfer to a 4 year degree program or enter the workforce. • Collaborate to Graduate. Students can collaborate with their academic advisor and gain useful information on a variety of campus resources to enhance their educational experience and obtain their degree. All UNM Taos academic advisors are members of National Academic Advising Association, enabling advisors to stay current on advising trends and research.

Grievance procedures are available to interested persons by contacting the compliance officer listed below. Inquiries regarding this nondiscrimination policy may be directed to the person listed below: Patricia Gonzales Director of Student Affairs UNM-Taos 1157 County Road 110 Ranchos de Taos, NM 87557 575-737-6212 A copy of the career and technical education courses/ programs offered and admission criteria may be 32
obtained on our website, http://taos.unm.edu or by calling 575-737-6215 to request a mailing. Adding and Dropping Courses Students may drop and add courses on the web at http:// my.unm.edu or in person. Do not expect your instructor to drop you if you stop attending class. See Important Dates pages for deadlines. Call the Student Affairs Department at 575-737-6215 for complete information. Upon completion of the semester, students receiving a failing or withdrawal grade for all courses will be required to provide documentation stating he/ she was in attendance all semester. If a student cannot provide the documentation requested he/she will have to pay back all financial aid they received for that semester.
PLEASE NOTE: Your instructor will not automatically drop you if you stop attending class and you may receive a failing grade. Cancellation Due to Lack of Financial Commitment Students who fail to pay their full tuition and fees (including second 8-week courses or second 4 week courses in summer) or have not made financial arrangements with the cashier’s office on or before 5:00pm on the scheduled financial disenrollment deadline date will have their registration cancelled and will be disenrolled from all classes. The student must pay tuition in full or make financial arrangements for all university charges. Call the business office at 7376269, check the Important Dates page 2 or call the Department of Student Affairs at 575-737-6215 for additional information. 575-737-6200
Important Information Course Wait List A wait list is an electronic list of students who are waiting to register for a full class. Students may sign up for this when they attempt to register for a section that has reached its capacity. The first student on the registration wait list is notified via email when a space becomes available. This student then has a maximum of 48 hours (24 hours once the semester starts) or until 5pm on the Add Deadline Date, whichever comes first, to register for the section. If the student does not register for the section within this time frame, he/she will be dropped from the wait list for that section and the next student on the list will be notified. Course Wait List Policies and Procedures 1. Any eligible student wishing to enroll in a course that has reached its authorized capacity may add themselves to one section of that course’s wait list. A student is wait listed in the order in which s/he attempts to register for the course. 2. A student on the wait list is not officially enrolled in that course and is not eligible to receive a grade in that course. http://taos.unm.edu
3. Being on the wait list does not guarantee registration in the class or that a new section will be made available for the same time frame or instructor. 4. A student on a wait list may attend the wait listed course, if seating is available and with the instructor’s permission. 5. Students on a wait list will have conflicts checked with prerequisites, but not duplicate courses, corequisites, or time conflicts. Students can be on a wait list for a course with the same course number, but a different section number than the section that they are enrolled in. 6. Students must meet all registration requirements before being allowed on a wait list. 7. It is the responsibility of the student to check the status of the wait list. If the student no longer wishes to remain on the wait list, they should drop it through LoboWeb. 8. Not all sections have wait lists. Off-pattern/open learning courses scheduled outside a regular term may not be set up with wait lists at this time.
9. Instructors have the right to increase course capacity to allow specific students to enroll in their class. *Wait list goes away the first Friday of the semester for 16 week courses.
Financial Aid Award & Payment Financial Aid forms are available in the Student Affairs Department. Students seeking financial aid assistance must complete a FAFSA form. The UNM school code is 002663. Once the form has been submitted, please call 575-737-6215 to verify your eligibility or if you need help filling out your forms. Financial Aid funds are disbursed the first day of classes. Scholarship and grant information is available at: http://taos.unm.edu. If a student withdraws during the semester, he/she may be required to pay back a portion of their financial aid. The payback amount is determined by the student’s last date of attendance. PLEASE NOTE: Failure to add/drop courses by the published deadlines could affect your Financial Aid Award. Please see the Financial Aid Office before processing any add/drop transactions after the published deadlines. 33
Important Information Graduation Information Each student is responsible for monitoring his/her individual progress toward graduation. For this purpose, curriculum checklists are available from the UNM-Taos Student Affairs Department for the various degree programs. A request for a degree check should be submitted by each student upon completion of at least 40 credit hours toward an Associate degree or 20 credit hours toward a Certificate. One semester prior to the semester in which the student expects to graduate, a student must petition to graduate by completing a Petition for Graduation form and submitting it to the Department of Student Affairs. Petition to Graduate Deadlines Summer - April 1 Fall - June 1 Spring - November 1 Petition deadlines are set early to ensure that there is ample time to process a degree check prior to registration. Graduation petitions can be picked up at the Department of Student Affairs. Please call 575-737-6215 for additional information.
34
Resident and Non-Resident Status Students are responsible for obtaining the correct residency classification prior to the third week of classes. Residency is determined at the time of admission. Any student wishing to change residency classification must petition through the Department of Student Affairs. For a description of the residency requirements, visit the UNMTaos website at http://taos. unm.edu. Tuition Refund All tuition and fee refunds are based on the date of official drop or withdrawal. To receive consideration for a refund of paid tuition and fees, students must complete drop procedures via LoboWeb, or in the Student Enrollment Department. A refund is not automatically disbursed to a student; a written request must be made. If a refund is due and payment was made by check, there is a 21-day hold period from the payment receipt date before the refund is processed. MasterCard/ VISA card
payments must be credited back to the charge card. Check the “Important Dates section for the last drop/refund date for each semester. UNM Extended Learning | Bachelor & Graduate Online Programs About Online Courses
By using a computer with Internet access, students can take classes taught by regular UNM faculty on a standard semester basis. Online courses provide diverse interactions with classmates and instructors, and use the same rigorous materials as their classroom counterparts, while providing greater freedom in choosing when and where learning will take place. While many online classes do not have fixed meeting times, some instructors do require regular synchronous/ simultaneous meetings. Through web conferencing tools, some classes offered at main campus can be transmitted simultaneously for online participation from other locations. All required synchronous class meetings are listed in the schedule of classes.
Effective Summer 2016, there will be two types of course delivery formats available. 1. Synchronous Online - has fixed meeting times. Students log in at a scheduled time to participate in the course. These courses (many offered formerly via Interactive Television) are now available via desktop with Internet accessibility, making it convenient for a student to access the class. 2. Asynchronous Online - has no required meeting times. Students log in and participate as their schedule permits. In both types of online course, UNM faculty have the discretion to require face-to-face meetings, such as for exams or lab work. Detailed course information is available at the UNM Online Schedule of Classes. Students are also encouraged to email questions about the course format to professors.
