UNM-Taos Summer/Fall 2017

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE INTERIM CEO

What a wonderful and exciting experience! That is indeed my reaction after being honored to serve as the UNMTaos Interim Branch President (CEO) during this past academic year. It was an opportunity to learn so much more about our campus family and the ways in which we serve our students and our community. It was a time of transition, with the search for our new CEO, the dedication of our Health Careers Training Center at Rio Grande Hall, and the beginning of building plans for the STEM Center at Klauer Campus. But it was a period not without challenges, both local and statewide. We dealt with bursting water mains and exploding transformers at the start of the Fall semester. We have navigated the tricky waters of State budget allocations and rescissions. But, by a large margin, it has been a successful year. And now we await the 2017-18 semesters with great anticipation. As you look through the Summer and Fall Schedule of Classes, watch for highlights of new programs that are being offered to enrich the UNM-Taos educational experience. Our academic offerings continue to flourish, both in person and online. And with newly expanded facilities, we look forward to even greater resources to offer students as they pursue their career dreams. Most importantly, we welcome Dr. Patrick Valdez, who will join us this summer as the new Chief Executive Officer and Branch President of UNM-Taos. I take personal delight in turning over the helm to him and to stand with him as we sail into the bright future with New Mexico’s flagship university. Thank you all for the support you have given me during this period. As I return to teaching, which you all know is my first love, I will cherish the time I spent working with you to advance our mission in service to the Taos and Northern New Mexico communities that we call home. UNM-Taos is and always will be your hometown University. Go Lobos! Dr. Marty Hewlett UNM-Taos Interim CEO

Due to the nature of their mission, they are most often dispatched by 9-11 emergency operators.

The EMS courses can be taken individually or as part of the EMS associate degree, allowing you to work in the field as you earn your college degree. For more information, contact UNM-Taos EMS Department Chair Josh Wright at jwrong@unm. edu

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Access to Career and Technical Education/Grievance Procedures The University of New Mexico-Taos hereby advises students, parents, employees and the general public that it offers employment and educational opportunities, including career and technical educational opportunities, without regard to sex, race, color, national origin or disability. Grievance procedures are available to interested persons by contacting the compliance officer listed below. Inquiries regarding this nondiscrimination policy may be directed to the person listed below: Patricia Gonzales Director of Student Services UNM-Taos 1157 County Road 110 Ranchos de Taos, NM 87557 575-737-6212 A copy of the career and technical education courses/programs offered and admission criteria may be obtained on our website, http://taos. unm.edu or by calling 575-737-6215 to request a mailing. Adding and Dropping Courses Students may drop and add courses on the web at http://my.unm.edu or in person. Do not expect your instructor to drop you if you stop attending class. See Important Dates pages for deadlines. Call the Student Affairs Department at 575-737-6215 for complete information.

40

Upon completion of the semester, students receiving a failing or withdrawal grade for all courses will be required to provide documentation stating he/ she was in attendance all semester. If a student cannot provide the documentation requested he/she will have to pay back all financial aid they received for that semester.

PLEASE NOTE: Your instructor will not automatically drop you if you stop attending class and you may receive a failing grade. Cancellation Due to Lack of Financial Commitment Students who fail to pay their full tuition and fees (including second 8-week courses or second 4 week courses in summer) or have not made financial arrangements with the cashier’s office on or before 5:00pm on the scheduled financial disenrollment deadline date will have their registration cancelled and will be disenrolled from all classes. The student must pay tuition in full or make financial arrangements for all university charges. Call the business office at 737-6269, check the Important Dates page 2 or call the Department of Student Services at 575-737-6215 for additional information. Course Wait List A wait list is an electronic list of students who are waiting to register for a full class. Students may sign up for this when they attempt to register for a section that has reached

its capacity. The first student on the registration wait list is notified via email when a space becomes available. This student then has a maximum of 48 hours (24 hours once the semester starts) or until 5pm on the Add Deadline Date, whichever comes first, to register for the section. If the student does not register for the section within this time frame, he/ she will be dropped from the wait list for that section and the next student on the list will be notified. Course Wait List Policies and Procedures 1. Any eligible student wishing to enroll in a course that has reached its authorized capacity may add themselves to one section of that course’s wait list. A student is wait listed in the order in which s/he attempts to register for the course. 2. A student on the wait list is not officially enrolled in that course and is not eligible to receive a grade in that course. 3. Being on the wait list does not guarantee registration in the class or that a new section will be made available for the same time frame or instructor. 4. A student on a wait list may attend the wait listed course, if seating is available and with the instructor’s permission. 5. Students on a wait list will have conflicts checked with prerequisites, but not duplicate 575-737-6200

IMPORTANT INFORMATION courses, co-requisites, or time conflicts. Students can be on a wait list for a course with the same course number, but a different section number than the section that they are enrolled in. 6. Students must meet all registration requirements before being allowed on a wait list. 7. It is the responsibility of the student to check the status of the wait list. If the student no longer wishes to remain on the wait list, they should drop it through LoboWeb. 8. Not all sections have wait lists. Off-pattern/open learning courses scheduled outside a regular term may not be set up with wait lists at this time. 9. Instructors have the right to increase course capacity to allow specific students to enroll in their class.

PLEASE NOTE: Failure to add/drop courses by the published deadlines could affect your Financial Aid Award. Please see the Financial Aid Office before processing any add/drop transactions after the published deadlines. Graduation Information Each student is responsible for monitoring his/her individual progress toward graduation. For this purpose, curriculum checklists are available from the UNM-Taos Department of Student Services for the various degree programs. A request for a degree check should be submitted by each student upon completion of at least 40 credit hours toward an Associate degree or 20 credit hours toward a Certificate. One semester prior to the semester in which the student expects to graduate, a student must petition to graduate by completing a Petition for Graduation form and submitting it to the Department of Student Affairs.

*Wait list goes away the first Friday of the semester for 16 week courses. Financial Aid Award & Payment Financial Aid forms are available in the Student Services Department. Students seeking financial aid assistance must complete a FAFSA form. The UNM school code is 002663. Once the form has been submitted, please call 575-737-6215 to verify your eligibility or if you need help filling out your forms. Financial Aid funds are disbursed the first day of classes. Scholarship and grant information is available at: http://taos. unm.edu. If a student withdraws during the semester, he/she may be required to pay back a portion of their financial aid. The payback amount is determined by the student’s last date of attendance. http://taos.unm.edu

Petition to Graduate Deadlines Summer - April 1 Fall - June 1 Spring - November 1 Petition deadlines are set early to ensure that there is ample time to process a degree check prior to registration. Graduation petitions can be picked up at the Department of Student Services. Please call 575-7376215 for additional information.

Resident and Non-Resident Status Students are responsible for obtaining the correct residency classification prior to the third week of classes. A student not classified as a New Mexico resident will be charged nonresident tuition rates. All students are classified according to their

residency status for tuition purposes. Residency is determined at the time of admission. Any student wishing to change residency classification must petition through the Department of Student Services. For a description of the residency requirements, visit the UNM-Taos website at http://taos. unm. edu.

Tuition Refund All tuition and fee refunds are based on the date of official drop or withdrawal. To receive consideration for a refund of paid tuition and fees, students must complete drop procedures via LoboWeb, or in the Department of Student Services. A refund is not automatically disbursed to a student; a written request must be made. If a refund is due and payment was made by check, there is a 21-day hold period from the payment receipt date before the refund is processed. MasterCard/ VISA card payments must be credited back to the charge card. Check the “Important Dates” section for the last drop/refund date for each semester.

ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT

ACADEMIC ADVISMENT YOUR KEY TO SUCCESS UNM-Taos Academic Advisors support students to ensure successful progression to graduation. Students are encouraged to meet with their academic advisor every semester. • Understand Your Certificate or Associate Degree. One size does not fit all. Academic Advisors listen to the needs and wants of each student to collectively create a plan toward degree completion. • Do More Than Make a Class Schedule. In addition to helping students choose classes for the semester, Academic Advisors guide decision-making regarding how students’ time at UNM-Taos can help them transfer to a 4 year degree program or enter the workforce. • Collaborate to Graduate. Students can collaborate with their academic advisor and gain useful information on a variety of campus resources to enhance their educational experience and obtain their degree in a timely manner. All UNM Taos academic advisors are members of National Academic Advising Association, enabling advisors to stay current on advising trends and research.

UPWARD BOUND & HEP

V ETER A NS UPWA R D BOUND Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) is designed to motivate and assist veterans in the development of academic and other requisite skills necessary for acceptance and success in a program of postsecondary education. The program provides assessment and enhancement of basic skills through counseling, mentoring, tutoring and academic instruction in the core subject areas. The primary goal of the program is to increase the rate at which participants enroll in and complete postsecondary education programs.

VUB Projects provides short-term remedial or refresher courses for veterans who are high school graduates but have delayed pursuing postsecondary education. The program assists veterans in securing support services from other locally available resources such as the Veterans Administration, state veterans agencies, veteran associations, and other state and local agencies that serve veterans. For additional information about Veteran Upward Bound, please contact Randy Larry at 575.737.3735. VUB is located at 630 Paseo del Pueblo Sur, Suite #100 Taos, NM 87571.

UPWA R D BOUND M ATH A ND SCIENCE The UNM Taos Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) helps Taos students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science, while encouraging them to pursue postsecondary degrees STEM (Science Technology Engineering or Mathematics). Funded by the US Department of Education TRiO Grant Initiative, the UBMS program is a comprehensive STEM college preparation program designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students while providing them opportunities for community engagement, leadership and college and career counseling and advisement.

UNM Extended Learning | Bachelor & Graduate Online Programs

Through partnership with the University of New Mexico’s four branch campuses, as well as selected community colleges, UNM is able to expand opportunities for students around the state. Branches are responsible for lower-division curriculum leading to a wide array of associate degrees. Extended Learning expands upon these efforts by creating the path for students to attain selected University of New Mexico bachelor and advanced degrees through delivery of upperdivision and graduate-level programming. This programming is offered using online tools.

About Online Courses

By using a computer with internet access, students can take classes taught by regular UNM faculty on a standard semester basis. Online courses provide diverse interactions with classmates and instructors, and use the same rigorous materials as their classroom counterparts, while providing greater freedom in choosing when and where learning will take place. While many online classes do not have fixed meeting times, some instructors do require regular synchronous/ simultaneous meetings. Through web conferencing tools, some classes offered at main campus can be transmitted simultaneously for online participation from other locations. All required synchronous class meetings are listed in the schedule of classes.

There are two types of course delivery formats available. 1. Synchronous Online - has fixed meeting times. Students log in at a scheduled time to participate in the course. These courses (many offered formerly via Interactive Television) are now available via desktop with internet accessibility, making it convenient for a student to access the class. 2. Asynchronous Online - has no required meeting times. Students log in and participate as their schedule permits. In both types of online course, UNM faculty have the discretion to require face-to-face meetings, such as for exams or lab work. Detailed course information is available at the UNM Online Schedule of Classes. Students are also encouraged to email questions about the course format to instructors.

Students can take individual online classes or work toward degree completion options. For information about taking an online class, contact the UNM Online Programs at toll-free 866-869-6040 or via email at online@unm.edu. Additional information can be found on the website at http://online.unm.edu.
