WHAT IS WELLNESS? Simply stated, wellness is overall well-being. It’s more important than ever to nurture the whole person and balance your life using the 8 dimensions of wellness. The Health, Physical Education, and Recreation building got a make over this past year with the addition of the Wellness banner in the front window as well as the donation of the Maverick Monument in the HPER plaza.

Welcome to your fall semester at UNO! Fall is my favorite season for a couple of reasons. One, fall in Nebraska provides the best weather of the year, in my opinion. Two, our campus comes alive in the fall. After experiencing 34 fall seasons since my arrival in August of 1980, I continue to appreciate all that fall represents here at UNO. There is so much optimism, enthusiasm, and energy surging throughout our campus. This makes me feel privileged to serve the students, faculty, and staff of UNO as the senior director for Wellness and the Director of Campus Recreation. The beginning of the academic year always presents new challenges and opportunities for the entire UNO community. Fortunately, the Wellness Center provides programs, services, and facilities that support student success. Over the past few years, a concerted effort has been made to emphasize the role wellness plays in the lives of our students. Wellness, simply defined, is overall well-being. My goal is for all UNO students to graduate with an understanding of what it means to live a healthy and well life while striving toward overall well-being. UNO identified the 8 dimensions of wellness which include emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, occupational, physical, social, and spiritual wellness. Each dimension has its own significance, and all dimensions are related to one another. UNO made an additional commitment to campus wellness by creating the Wellness Coalition. This group meets several times per semester to build policies, programs, and services that support student wellness. The ultimate goal of the Wellness Coalition is for UNO to become the healthiest campus in the country. In the fall semester, this group will provide us with an update on campus wellness and the part you can play to help UNO reach our wellness goals. When UNO first caught the wellness bug, the Wellness Center was developed. The Wellness Center is located within the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Building and houses the Counseling Center, Health Services, and Campus Recreation. This state-of-theart facility supports your wellness needs. You can

Look for the large, colorful, wellness graphic on the outside of the building, and you will find a great place on our campus that will help enhance your college experience. Social Social wellness begins with developing a sense of connection and belonging, maintaining healthy relationships, enjoying being with others, and finding a well-developed support system. Emotional Emotional wellness begins with managing your emotions in a constructive way, appreciating the feelings of others, and understanding and respecting your own feelings and values. Occupational Occupational wellness begins with understanding your strengths, skills, values, and interests for your career and maintaining a balance between your work and your personal life. Intellectual Intellectual wellness begins with recognizing your creative and cognitive abilities, growing intellectually, valuing lifelong learning, and responding positively to intellectual challenges. Environmental Environmental wellness begins with being aware of how your behavior impacts the earth and how the physical world impacts you, while demonstrating a commitment to a healthy planet. Spiritual Spiritual wellness begins with finding purpose, value, and meaning in your life. Financial Financial wellness begins with knowing where your money comes from and where it’s going, understanding your financial situation, and taking care of it in a way that prepares you for financial changes. WHERE CAN YOU FIND THESE WELLNESS ICONS?
If you haven’t seen these wellness icons around campus, you will. They are on the front of the HPER building, UNO t-shirts, in the Wellness Guide, and many more places. When you see these icons, know that you are contributing to your overall well-being.

Physical Physical wellness begins with caring for your body and recognizing your need for physical activity, healthy foods, and sleep in order to stay well now and in the future.
wellness living learning community Residents who want to make personal wellness a priority in their lives should look into the Wellness Living Learning Community in Building A of Maverick Village. This community is a partnership with the Wellness Center and offers a variety of programs and activities geared toward the 8 dimensions of wellness. All students who live in Building A must be willing to be members of the Wellness Living Learning Community. Abbey Young is a Public Health student in the College of Public Affairs and Community Service. When she first applied to be a Resident Assistant (RA), she didn’t understand the concept of a “Living Learning Community” and the opportunities that they provide.
University Housing offers four different types of living learning communities:

Global Service Thompson Learning Community Wellness “I knew right away that wellness was the perfect fit for me. The main goal of the Wellness Living Learning Community is to help residents incorporate the eight dimensions of wellness into their daily lives. In the field of Public Health, we discuss the eight dimensions of wellness in every one of my classes.” As the Wellness RA, Abbey hopes to help residents set goals to achieve a better state of wellness, become aware of the how the different dimensions affect the world around them, and discover how every activity they do on a daily basis falls into one of the eight categories. “I hope to debunk the stigma that wellness is all about working out and eating right. While those two activities are an important part of living a healthy life, they aren’t the only ways for residents to live well.”
Financial wellness Tips on Insurance from Health Services Insurance needs to be purchased before you need it so it can protect you against things like car accidents, health issues, or theft. Here are some common insurance policies UNO students need: Renter’s insurance This may be a college student’s first introduction to the need for insurance.Taking the time to purchase a policy and understanding how it can be used is a smart move. From items being taken from your apartment to being a resident in the Scott building that caught fire last spring, there are tons of reasons why you might want to protect yourself with renter’s insurance. Car insurance This is mandatory for all car owners in Nebraska. If you are injured or your car is damaged in a car accident, car insurance pays for repairs and medical bills, even before your health insurance. Health Insurance This is required for all Americans by Federal law. UNO has a comprehensive major medical Blue Cross Blue Shield student plan available for students and their dependents. The plan includes medical care with no penalty for pre-existing illnesses. It also includes well care, vaccinations, pharmacy, dental, and meets all of the essential elements of the Affordable Care Act. Most services provided at UNO are covered at 100%. Health insurance will come in handy if you ever get sick or injured. Making thoughtful decisions about insurance is a big part of your overall wellness — it lowers your worry and stress levels, leaves you protected and proactive, and makes it easier for you to focus more on your college experience and less about what would happen if you came down with the flu or got in a fender-bender.

UNO COMMU The new UNO Community Arena has scheduled its first-ever event: a hockey game against the Air Force in October of 2015. Mark it down in your calendars and bring your #mavspirit.

INTELLECTUAL WELLNESS TIP Create something. When we engage in the creative process, we use parts of our brain that may rarely get exercised. Being creative can be fun, and it can help us to see things from a different perspective. It doesn’t matter if we have “talent” or if we create “art,” because the learning (and the real value) is in the process.
UNITY ARENA sports competitions. UNO will commit a minimum of 33 percent of the available ice time for community use. Planned community use includes public skating, youth hockey, figure skating, club hockey, adult recreational hockey, campus recreation space, varsity practices, varsity games, school skate programs, commencement ceremonies, and concerts.
“The arena is a game changer for UNO, enhancing not only Maverick Athletics and our move to Division I, but also recruitment, student life and as a home for university special events,” said Chancellor John E. Christensen following the Board of Regents approval of the plan to fundraise and build the arena.

CINEMATECA 2014 Film Streams and the UNO’s Office of Latino/Latin American Studies (OLLAS) are proud to announce Cinemateca 2014, their fourth biennial celebration of Latino, Latin-American, and Spanish cinema beginning Friday, Aug. 29 and running through Tuesday, Sept. 30. Dedicated as always to presenting great art that transcends borders, this year’s program is unique from previous installments in that all of the films are from the last several years, a sure sign of a brilliant and thriving scene, and most have documentary elements. Also unique this year is that the six films included in this year’s series represent seven Spanish-speaking countries, including the United States, which has the fifth-largest Spanish-speaking population in the world at 38 million people. All films in the series will be presented at Film Streams’ Ruth Sokolof Theater, located at 1340 Mike Fahey Street. Tickets are $9 general, $7 for seniors, students, teachers, military and those arriving by bicycle, and $4.50 for Film Streams Members.

Spiritual Wellness begins with finding purpose, value, and meaning in your life. This defines spiritual wellness as an action: a strengthening of our connection to the things that we do in life. It means choosing to live each day with purpose. Being spiritually well can lead you to a sense of inner contentment, which allows us to be grateful and understanding, show compassion, and feel a deeper connection to ourselves and the people around us. There are many ways to strengthen this connection and our spiritual wellness. on-campus spiritual wellness resources Spirituality, Public Health, Religious Studies (SPHRS) is an organization that offers presentations and resources on spiritual wellness and explores the expanding fields of spirituality and wellness. Contact SPHRS The Mindful Student Organization is a student group that offers students the opportunity to explore mindfulness, with guided meditation, programs, and activities. Contact the Mindful Student Org. The Mindful Student is an academic class at UNO exploring mindfulness, yoga, and mindful activities. A Mindful Space is a room where anyone can find a quiet haven from the stress of their daily lives and is currently being created in the Wellness Center.
environmental wellness tips Set aside just five minutes a day for cleaning. In just five minutes, you can affect a simple but substantial change in your environment, and the way you feel about your surroundings. Fill your home with foliage. Placing a few potted plants in your home will create a feeling of freshness and life. Surrounding yourself with living things like plants helps you feel more connected to their energy. Clear the desk! Whenever you sit down at your desk to study for school or begin a work project, clear up the clutter. This small investment of time and effort is well worth the reward. Keep a few small plastic bags in your car. Each time you get out of your car at the end of the day, pick up any trash that has accumulated and throw it in the sack. Donate clothes, furniture, and other durable goods to Goodwill or the Salvation Army, recycle anything else that you can, and throw the rest away. If you’re not using it, it’s simply taking up space and cluttering your house.
Emotional Wellness begins with managing your emotions in a constructive way, appreciating the feelings of others, and understanding and respecting your own feelings and values. Emotional wellness also comes from taking care of how we process daily stressors to decrease their impact on our overall health. Stress, anxiety, and depression are all primary threats to our emotional wellness. Stress compromises cognitive abilities, weakens our ability to think clearly and creatively, and creates difficulties in making decisions. Accumulated stress can actually prevent us from creatively identifying solutions to cope with stress. It’s quite the dilemma.
Don’t get discouraged by accumulated stress. Increasing your awareness of everyday stressors currently affecting you, and practicing more effective responses to these stressors, can help release stress accumulating in your emotional storage bin. Emptying that emotional storage bin can also help reduce feelings of being emotionally drained, stressed, and anxious. Amazing emotional wellness tips and resources can be found on the Counseling Center’s website. NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), a community organization on campus, offers various emotional wellness resources as well. Visit NAMI on MavSYNC.
