UNO Mavericks Give Back UNO’s New Food PANTRY The Maverick Food Pantry was created as a result of a meeting between concerned UNO faculty and staff discussing jarring news of UNO students going hungry. Upon further research, it was learned that approximately 25 colleges and universities have some sort of food bank located on their campus for student use. Food collection for this project began at UNO during new and transfer student orientation sessions. Students attending orientation were asked to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the food pantry. Food that has been collected is currently being stored in the small room off of the Student Life office that formerly housed MavRadio.
Operational details are being finalized, and meetings have taken place with staff from the Omaha Food Bank and other charities in the area. These meetings provided the project with great insight into how a food pantry operation runs. Food collection will be an ongoing opportunity for students, faculty, and staff. Volunteers are needed to assist in the staffing and operation of the food bank. Students can volunteer their time to the project.
