The World’s Cities in 2016 United Nations In 2016, an estimated 54.5 per cent of the world’s population lived in urban settlements. By 2030, urban areas are projected to house 60 per cent of people globally and one in every three people will live in cities with at least half a million inhabitants. Understanding the key trends in urbanization likely to unfold over the coming years is crucial to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This data booklet highlights current and future trajectories of populations in cities around the globe, drawing on population estimates and projections published in World Urbanization Prospects: The 2014 Revision.

Plastic Ingredients that Contribute to Marine Microplastic Litter United Nations Environment Programme

ARE WE POLLUTING THE ENVIRONMENT THROUGH OUR PERSONAL CARE?

Litter is found in all the world’s seas and the ocean, even in remote areas far from human activities. The continuous growth in the amount of solid waste thrown away and the very slow degradation rate of most litter items result in the accumulation of marine litter at sea, on the sea floor and in coastal areas. Marine litter2 is a major global environmental problem which the United Nations Environment Programme has been actively addressing through the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities as well as the Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans. This paper addresses the questions on plastic materials being used as ingredients relevant for the marine litter debate.

The Future of the Bornean Orangutan Impacts of Change in Land and Climate

United Nations Environment Programme THE FUTURE OF THE BORNEAN ORANGUTAN

Impacts of change in land cover and climate

Over the past century, orangutan populations in Southeast Asia have seen a very steep decline, driven to the brink of extinction by a host of man-made threats. Deforestation, illegal logging, the expansion of agro-industrial plantations and hunting – these forces combined to isolate orangutans into precarious pockets of forest on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. This report assesses the impacts of land cover change and climate change on Borneo’s endangered orangutans. It also examines the major driver of deforestation – the expansion of oil palm – and analyses how various land-use scenarios might impact the region through different climate change projections. As global initiatives are being set in place, it is encouraged to utilize these approaches to ensure sustainable development, not just for humankind but also for orangutans.

SPRING SUMMER 2017

The environment provides the very foundation of sustainable development, our health, food security and economies. Ecosystems provide clean water supply, clean air and secure food and our wellbeing. Natural resources also provide livelihoods, jobs and revenues to governments that can be used for education, health care, development and sustainable business models. The role of the environment is recognized in the Sustainable Development Goals. However, the environment as the very foundation of development, peace and security is at risk. Environmental crime endangers not only wildlife but entire ecosystems, livelihoods and revenue streams. This publication examines these crimes and their effects, and makes recommendations.

Waste covers a very wide spectrum of discarded materials ranging from municipal, electrical and electronic, industrial and agricultural, to new types including counterfeit pesticides. It also includes anything in size and scale from decommissioned ships, oil or liquid wastes, hundreds of millions of mobile phones to billions of used car tires. Additionally, illegal transboundary movements of wastes is an increasing global concern. This publication provides insight into the possible scale and features of the main drivers, along with case studies. It is not an exhaustive or fully comprehensive overview, but it intends to identify major areas of policy deficits and challenges that require further investigation, policy action and intervention for prevention and damage control, as well as to identify opportunities. The Benefits, Risks and Trade-offs of Low-carbon Technologies for Electricity Production

SPRING SUMMER 2017

United Nations Environment Programme Rising energy demand and efforts to combat climate change require a significant increase in low-carbon electricity generation. Yet, concern has been raised that rapid investment in some novel technologies could cause a new set of environmental problems. The report aims to support policy-makers in making informed decisions about energy technologies, infrastructures and an optimal mix. The findings of the report show that, compared to coal, electricity generated by hydro, wind, solar and geothermal power can bring substantial reductions in greenhouse gases emissions (by more than 90%), and also of pollutants harmful to human health and ecosystems (by 60-90%).

Land resources feed us and help our societies and economies thrive. Some 2.5 billion agricultural smallholders worldwide manage around 500 million small farms, providing more than 80 per cent of food consumed in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. These resources are being degraded at an alarming pace. Some 33 per cent of soil is degraded due to erosion, nutrient depletion, acidification, salinization, compaction and pollution. Each year we lose 24 billion tonnes of fertile soil and 15 billion trees, costing the economy around $40 billion. This report argues that land potential evaluation systems are needed to sustain and increase the provision of ecosystem services in the context of climate change, persistent land degradation and increasing global population and per-capita consumption levels. As the World population approaches nine billion, nearly half of all people could suffer water stress by 2030 as a result of accelerating urbanization, new consumption habits and climate change. This report provides for a viable and sustainable alternative that swaps economic growth fuelled by escalating water use and environmental degradation for a more durable model of social, economic and environmental resilience. By 2030, annual demand for water in North America and Sub-Saharan Africa could increase by 42 and 283 per cent respectively, compared to 2005 levels. That is why the ambitious 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development seeks to decouple economic growth from water consumption and pollution.

SPRING SUMMER 2017

For thousands of years, nature has gracefully provided the necessary inputs to feed us, and we have in many occasions taken these precious gifts for granted. This report, “Food Systems and Natural Resources” is an effort to account for these inputs, looking at how we are using and managing them, the consequences of that management and the options to improve the efficiency with which they are managed.

Misconceptions, Concerns and Impacts on Marine Environments United Nations Environment Programme This report stresses that the adoption of plastic products labelled as ‘biodegradable’ will not bring about a significant decrease either in the quantity of plastic entering the ocean or the risk of physical and chemical impacts on the marine environment. Indeed, biodegradable polymers degrade significantly slower in the marine environment than on land. Therefore, a widespread use is said to lead to continuing littering problems and its negative impacts. Furthermore, oxo-degradable polymers would only increase the quantity of microplastics in the environment and claims stating otherwise are likely motivated by commercial interests rather than scientific evidence.

Energy Connectivity in Asia and the Pacific Region

Towards A Sustainable Future

United Nations This report, aimed at policy makers from Asia and the Pacific, provides a historical perspective on regional energy connectivity and its implementation challenges, as well as outlining an action plan for accelerated regional energy integration to bring shared benefits to Member States. The report concludes that energy connectivity can increase the supply and reduce the cost of energy, while lowering its social and environmental costs and addressing the challenges of energy security. Regional cooperation in energy is essential and must be reinforced. The report argues that an interdependent Asia and the Pacific is necessary to end economic dependence on a single source or a single fuel.

MARINE PLASTIC DEBRIS AND MICROPLASTICS: Global Lessons and Research to Inspire Action and Guide Policy Change

The world’s oceans – their temperature, chemistry, currents and life – drive global systems that make the Earth habitable for humankind. Our rainwater, drinking water, weather, climate, coastlines, much of our food, and even the oxygen in the air we breathe, are all ultimately provided and regulated by the sea. Throughout history, oceans and seas have been vital conduits for trade and transportation.

This document, presented by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) to its member States at its thirty-sixth session, provides an analytical complement to the 2030 Agenda from a structuralist perspective and from the point of view of the Latin American and Caribbean countries. The proposals made here stem from the need to achieve progressive structural change in order to incorporate more knowledge into production, ensure social inclusion and combat the negative impacts of climate change. Arab Development Outlook Vision 2030

United Nations The Arab region is in crisis and it is easy to succumb to pessimism about its future. This report, however, embraces a vision of hope: one that illustrates the many ways in which the region can act to ensure its future security and prosperity. A vision of human development and economic prosperity implies that citizens are free to voice their opinions and practice their beliefs without fear, the rule of law applies equally to all, and the basic necessities for a decent life are affordable. This report presents a vision of improved governance, advanced social justice and human well-being, transformed economies, and intensified regional integration; in short, an Arab region at peace, stable and prosperous.

Arab Sustainable Development Report 2015 United Nations Using the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a thematic reference, the report examines progress on securing human dignity and well-being in the Arab countries and what is needed to achieve sustainable development in this region in turmoil. It also looks at the complex factors shaping the region: the occupation of Palestinian and other Arab lands; ongoing conflicts; governance, human rights and institutional deficits; and shortcomings in terms of financing, science and technology, trade and statistical capacity. The report stresses that urgent action is needed at the national and regional levels, and that planning and investments to address the root causes of instability in the region are indispensable for achieving the SDGs.

The Independent Evaluation Office (IEO) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) conducted an Assessment of Development Results (ADR) in Viet Nam in 2015. Following the first ADR conducted in 2003, this is the second independent country-level evaluation conducted by the IEO in Viet Nam. Viet Nam is a pilot country for the Delivering as One (DaO) initiative. The ADR examined UNDP’s country programme for two periods, 20062011 and 2012-2016. The evaluation examined a total of eight programme outcomes as defined by the Common Country Programme Document (CCPD). The outcomes covered the following three thematic clusters, reflecting the programme structure of the current country office: (i) Inclusive and Equitable Growth; (ii) Sustainable Development; and (iii) Governance and Participation. Survey of Economic and Social Developments in the Arab Region 2015-2016

SPRING SUMMER 2017

The economic and political uncertainty which has characterized the Arab region in the wake of the 2011 transitions and upheaval continues to restrain the region’s prospects for growth, job creation and stability. Economic expansion remains stalled, with persistently low global oil prices adding a further burden to the regional economy and constraining the growth and fiscal balances of those countries that had been top-performers due to energy exports. While some progress on social indicators such as gender representativeness can be noted, countries in and affected by political transition and conflict have regressed on a plethora of socioeconomic indicators. This publication draws on recent research of ESCWA regarding migration, social developments, the impact of conflict, women’s empowerment, and specific country-level analysis. The Report on the World Social Situation 2016

Leaving No One Behind - The Imperative of Inclusive Development United Nations The world has made progress in reducing poverty, but social exclusion persists in both developed and developing countries. At the same time, some countries have been able to effectively promote inclusion even at low levels of income and development. This report focuses on social inclusion. It examines patterns of social exclusion and assesses whether growth and development processes have been inclusive, paying particular attention to the links between poverty and inequality trends, changes in the world of work and inclusion – or exclusion. The report highlights policy options to promote inclusive development through social and macroeconomic policies and institutional transformation for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

The Least Developed Countries Report 2016

The Path to Graduation and Beyond - Making the Most of the Process United Nations Graduation is the process through which least developed countries (LDCs) cease to be members of the LDC category, in recognition of their advances in development. In principle, it marks a shift from dependency to a greater degree of self-sufficiency. The Report highlights policy areas essential to achieve “graduation with momentum” - rural transformation, industrial policy, science, technology and innovation policy, finance and macroeconomic policy, employment generation and women’s empowerment. It calls on the international community to contribute by fulfilling their commitments. It suggests revisions to the graduation criteria to better reflect issues like structural transformation, environmental sustainability and gender equality.

World Economic Situation and Prospects 2017 United Nations This publication notes that although a modest global recovery is projected for 2017-18, the world economy has not yet emerged from the period of slow growth, characterised by weak investment, dwindling trade and flagging productivity growth. The report highlights that there is a need to redouble efforts to bring the global economy back on a stronger and more inclusive growth path and create an international economic environment that is conducive to sustainable development. This is the definitive report of the United Nations on the state of the world economy. It is jointly published by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and the five United Nations Regional Commissions.

Human Rights and Traditional Justice Systems in Africa United Nations HUMAN RIGHTS AND TRADITIONAL JUSTICE SYSTEMS IN AFRICA

HUMAN RIGHTS AND

TRADITIONAL JUSTICE SYSTEMS

IN AFRICA

Human rights issues relating to traditional justice systems in Africa have rarely been addressed in detail. This publication defines the nature and characteristics of traditional justice systems, including issues related to jurisdiction, community involvement, composition, and a primary focus on restorative justice. It addresses how traditional justice has been reinforced by cultural and traditional values, proximity to the people and a lack of access to formal courts. Traditional justice systems also have human rights concerns which need to be monitored. Issues relating to fair trial, ill treatment or punishment, the right to life, freedom of religion or belief, sorcery and witchcraft, the prohibition of discrimination and the rights of the child, are all addressed with reference to human rights standards, norms and jurisprudence.

It explores the causes of this problem, with a distinction between such structural determinants as family and community relations and gender roles in many Arab countries, and such contextual determinants as instability, displacement and extreme poverty. It investigates the economic and health effects of child marriage and concludes with policy recommendations to address the multifaceted dimensions of child marriage and its implications for the rights of the girl-child.

Death Penalty and the Victims DEATH PENALTY AND THE VICTIMS

United Nations In this book it is argued that victims should always be at the centre of the debate on death penalty. Their testimonies make the brutality and trauma of death penalty wrenchingly clear. The taking of life is irreversible and goes against the fundamental belief in the dignity and worth of every human being. Death Penalty and the Victims, takes into account perspectives from a broad range of victims, including family members of the crime victims, the convicted persons and their families, as well as the third persons involved in the criminal proceedings or executions. It also highlights that the state’s right to execute violates the right to life and negatively reflects on human rights of its citizens in general. It demonstrates that victims’ perspectives, taken holistically, make a compelling case against the death penalty and that when it comes to the death penalty, almost everyone loses.

This Global Report on Trafficking in Persons 2016 is the third of its kind mandated by the United Nations General Assembly. In July 2010, the UN General Assembly adopted the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons. The Report covers and provides an overview of patterns and flows of trafficking in persons at the global, regional and national levels, based on trafficking cases detected mainly between 2012 and 2014. It looks at links between trafficking in persons, migration and conflict, and how refugees may be particularly vulnerable to being trafficked. The worldwide response to trafficking in persons, particularly in terms of criminalization and prosecution of trafficking crimes, is also a focus of this edition of the Global Report. Also included are the Country Profiles.

Neostructuralism and Heterodox Thinking in Latin America and the Caribbean in the Early Twenty-first Century

Economic Development

Neostructuralism and heterodox thinking in Latin America and the Caribbean in the early twenty-first century

United Nations Neostructuralism delves more deeply into the issues addressed in structuralism, aiming to improve positioning in the international economy, boost productive employment creation, reduce structural heterogeneity and improve income distribution, while maintaining financial balances capable of sustaining changes in the sphere of production by means of social and State support. This book offers a fresh look at neostructuralism and heterodox thinking. In a context shaped by the impacts of the worst economic and financial crisis since the Great Depression and by paradigmatic changes at the global level, it aims to carve out arenas for discussion between alternative lines of thinking in order to lay the foundations for a socioeconomically inclusive and environmentally sustainable model of development for the region.

Standards and regulations are an integral, if easily overlooked, part of our daily life. They determine whether a plug fits into a socket, whether food is safe for human consumption or whether a bank is allowed to take deposits. They are also an indispensable part of international trade. Using new evidence from ITC databases, this report reveals how standards and regulations are holding SME competitiveness back, but crucially, what SMEs and other stakeholders can do to make standards and regulations work for, and not against, SMEs. In this report, advice targeted at SME managers is presented, as well as how Trade and Investment Support Institutions and policymakers can influence the business environment to boost competitiveness, and integration into global markets.

Youth: Realities and Challenges for Achieving Development with Equality United Nations This book offers a portrayal of the opportunities for social inclusion afforded to young people in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a view to building stronger policies. The young must be included in development processes if progress is to be made towards more egalitarian societies because of what they mean in relation to dependency rates and the needs and issues particular to this stage of life. The publication construes the process of inclusion in society from a rights based perspective that transcends the basic pillars of education and employment to encompass other dimensions of social inclusion so that they can feel part of a society they help to build. In 15 years, the lifespan of the 2030 Agenda, the 10-year-old girl will be 25. Will she still be left behind? Or will she be enjoying her human rights and wellbeing, and exploring the many avenues open to her, knowing that, when her own daughter turns 10, she will experience more of the same? Only the latter scenario will allow the world to truly claim that it transformed the course of development and met the challenge of the Sustainable Development Goals. Much depends on the choices we all make, from parents to policymakers, educators to health-care professionals, economists to entrepreneurs, journalists to community leaders. Today’s 10-year-old girl is on the way to her future. And her future is our own.

This publication does not set, or even recommend, radiation safety standards, rather, it provides information on basic science related to radiation (origin, quantities and units), on radiation effects (on humans and the environment) and on radiation sources (natural and artificial). Helping the public understand what radiation is and how it affects life on this planet lies within the core mandate of UNEP.

Syria at War: Five Years On United Nations

FIVE FIVE YEARS YEARS ON ON

This report focuses on the socioeconomic ramifications of the conflict in Syria five years after the outbreak of the devastating war. This publication examines the European Union’s humanitarian cooperation with Syria and the region; the flow of refugees and migrants to Syria’s neighbours and into Europe that the conflict has triggered, and also the impact that the unilateral economic measures have had on the Syrian people. In addition, the report identifies guiding principles and key critical steps that will have to be taken in the context of a post-conflict Syria.
