Energy Transition Pathways for the 2030 Agenda in Asia and the Pacific Regional Trends Report on Energy for Sustainable Development 2018 United Nations The region’s rapid and sustained economic growth, increasing population, expanding industrialisation and rapid urbanization are driving rapid growth in energy demand. Ensuring that supplies of energy are adequate to meet the growth in demand in ways that are socially, economically and environmentally responsible creates a new set of challenges for policymakers. The transition to 2030 energy pathway, which is aimed at addressing those challenges, has coherent and interlinked objectives – increased energy supply to meet the growing demand, improved energy security and meeting the SDG7 targets. This requires policymakers to develop a clear, sustainable and achievable pathway that would enable the countries, as well as the region as a whole, to achieve the 2030 goals and targets. The State of Food and Agriculture 2017
Leveraging Food Systems for Inclusive Rural Transformation Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) One of the greatest challenges today is to end hunger and poverty while making agriculture and food systems sustainable. The challenge is daunting because of continued population growth, profound changes in food demand, and the threat of mass migration of rural youth in search of a better life. This report presents strategies that can leverage the potential of food systems to become the engine of inclusive economic development and rural prosperity in low-income countries. It analyses the structural and rural transformations now under way, and examines the opportunities and challenges they present to millions of small-scale food producers.

National Human Development Report 2018 - Timor-Leste Planning the Opportunities for a Youthful Population
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) World leaders are increasingly acknowledging that Gross Domestic Product (GDP) alone cannot provide a full picture of a country’s progress. Enhancing human development and wellbeing requires people accessing the opportunities and means to live healthy, happy and satisfactory lives. This Report for Timor-Leste puts the well-being of young people, three quarters of the country’s population, at the centre of the development agenda. By measuring the subjective wellbeing of youth aged 15 to 34 across eight aspects of life based on a nationwide survey, this report provides an excellent opportunity for decision makers to implement targeted policies and strategic investments based on an in-depth understanding of youth’s aspirations, attitudes and behaviours. Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2018
Mobilizing Finance for Sustained, Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 8 calls for promoting sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth. These three aspects of economic growth correspond to the three pillars of sustainable development: economic resilience, social inclusiveness and environmental sustainability. The region has made tremendous progress on the economic front. However, economic inequality within and among the region’s economies has increased, and rapid expansion of economic output has contributed to untenable levels of environmental degradation. The Survey shows that this is an opportune time for governments to initiate policies that can make economies resilient, inclusive and sustainable. It contains analyses of such issues and explores policy options. Publication Date: May 2018 ISBN: 9789211207804

United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) This edition highlights how intra-African migration is of relevance to the agenda for regional and continental integration and shows that there are still many knowledge gaps, including on the relationship between migration, economic and trade policies. Financial Inclusion of Small Rural Producers United Nations There is mounting empirical evidence that the responsible provision and use of formal financial services have a positive impact on household well-being and enterprise performance. At the individual level, financial inclusion benefits rural households and small producers by facilitating the safe accumulation of assets, enabling them to leverage those assets in order to invest in human and physical capital, and supporting better risk management. The positive effects at the aggregate level are associated with better allocation of scarce resources among different activities. Despite recent progress on different aspects of financial inclusion large gaps remain, especially in rural areas, which have been historically neglected. This book describes how these gaps have evolved recently.

The Inefficiency of Inequality
Thirty-seventh Session of ECLAC (Havana, 7-11 May 2018) United Nations Inequality is inefficient since it hinders learning, productivity, innovation and growth. Equality is, then, not only an ethical principle inherent to development, but also central to achieving it. This document examines mechanisms by which inequality erodes dynamic efficiency. It analyses and measures the productivity and income effects of unequal access to health and education, as well as the consequences of inequality of opportunities arising from discrimination. It examines how inequalities play out at the level of territory, infrastructure and urban dynamics, where their costs not only weigh on productivity, but also worsen energy inefficiencies and environmental degradation.

The Least Developed Countries Report 2018
Entrepreneurship for Structural Transformation - Beyond Business as Usual United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) For Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals, they need to transform the structure of their economy. This, in turn, requires entrepreneurship that innovates. The entrepreneurial landscape in LDCs is dominated by micro and small enterprises with low chances of survival and growth, and scant innovation. While LDCs are part of global value chains, these provide only limited opportunities of entrepreneurship development and upgrading. Most LDCs policies and programmes for entrepreneurship aim at job creation, poverty reduction and women and youth empowerment. For entrepreneurship to be a driving force towards structural transformation, policies need to target and support highpotential firms. Publication Date: November 2018 ISBN: 9789211129304

The Report on the World Social Situation 2018 Promoting Inclusion through Social Protection United Nations This report discusses the contribution of social protection to social inclusion focusing on the reduction of poverty and inequality concerning six social groups: children, youth, older persons, persons with disabilities, ethnic minorities and indigenous peoples, and international migrants. It considers how gender and socioeconomic status intersect with other group attributes and affect the barriers some groups face. The 2030 Agenda draws attention to these bases of disadvantage when it emphasizes that all should be included “irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status. The report assesses the contribution of social protection measures to enhancing opportunities and promoting respect for the rights of the six groups selected. Human Rights and Constitution Making United Nations This publication explores human rights in the context of constitution making. It notes the important role of participatory processes which should be designed to ensure that consultations with a wide variety of interest groups and vulnerable parts of the populations take place when a new constitution is drafted. It also focuses on what human rights and fundamental freedoms should be included in a constitution, including civil and political rights as well as economic, social and cultural rights. It addresses how the rights of women, children, the disabled, minorities and indigenous peoples can be expressed in a new constitution. Examples from over fifty different constitutions are used to illustrate how these rights can be expressed.

An Unfair Start - Inequality in Children’s Education in Rich Countries United Nations Children’s Fund - Innocenti Research Centre (UNICEF-IRC) This report focuses on educational inequalities in 41 of the world’s richest countries, all of which are members of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and/or the European Union (EU). Using the most recent data available, it examines inequalities across childhood -from access to preschool to expectations of post-secondary education -- and explores in depth the relationships between educational inequality and factors such as parents’ occupations, migration background, the child’s gender and school characteristics. The key feature of the report is the league table, which summarizes the extent of educational inequalities at preschool, primary school and secondary school levels.

State of World Population 2018
The Power of Choice - Reproductive Rights and the Demographic Transition United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Human rights are universal, interrelated and interconnected. This publication highlights the fact that reproductive rights, one of the most fundamental rights inherent to all persons and one of the most intimate choices a person can make, are still not available to all. Evidence remains that the right to make choices remains limited for far too many women. The extent to which couples and individuals have the power to make their own decisions about whether and when to have children, and how many children to have, directly impacts fertility levels. Fertility levels vary greatly between developed countries and least developed countries, and provide a general indication of the state of reproductive rights. This publication shows that great disparities are often tied to social and economic inequities and need to be addressed. Publication Date: October 2018 ISBN: 9781618000323

African Governance Report V
Natural Resource Governance and Domestic Revenue Mobilization for Structural Transformation United Nations Exploitation of natural resources has dominated economic activity in Africa but the benefits have accrued only to a privileged few. The continent’s most common strategy of exporting commodities in their raw (non-valued added) form has led to disappointing results, reflected in unsustainable and noninclusive economic growth, marginal improvements in the well-being of the population, and low levels of economic diversification and transformation. This edition examines efforts to improve the governance of Africa’s abundant natural resources, emphasizing the need to strengthen natural resource governance institutions and frameworks to enhance domestic revenue, the promotion of economic diversification, and structural transformation. United Nations E-Government Survey 2018
Gearing E-Government to Support Transformation Towards Sustainable and Resilient Society United Nations Governments have the critical responsibility to pursue policies and measures to build resilience and assist those most affected by shocks in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They must find ways to anticipate disasters and shocks and lower their impact. Digital technologies are increasingly being used by governments to improve the response to disasters and other shocks to improve the resilience of communities. In the information society, it is important to move onwards to an approach where the concerns of building resilience, sustainable development and leaving no one behind are embedded in e-government development.

Sustainable Cities, Human Mobility and International Migration A Concise Report United Nations This report reviews the current status of demographic evidence and its capacity to support monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It focuses on the core systems generating demographic data and describes how the “data revolution” has already improved their performance and the potential for accelerating such improvements. In addition, the report underscores that open access to anonymized microdata and routine use of geo-referencing in data collection are necessary to expand the use of demographic data. Geo-referencing makes possible the integration of diverse datasets and facilitates disaggregation and the incorporation of big data in analyses and modelling.

African Statistical Yearbook 2018 United Nations The Yearbook series results from joint efforts by major African regional organizations to set up a joint data collection mechanism of socioeconomic data on African countries as well as the development of a common harmonized database. It is meant to break with the practices of the past where each regional/subregional organization was publishing statistical data on African countries of the continent in an inefficient way, leading to duplication of efforts, inefficient use of scarce resources, increased burden on countries and sending different signals to users involved in tracking development efforts. The joint collection and sharing of data between regional institutions promotes wider use of country data, reduces costs and significantly improves data and leads to better monitoring of development initiatives.

UNITED NATIONS PUBLICATIONS
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 10 December 1948, was the result of the experience of the Second World War. With the end of that war, and the creation of the United Nations, the international community vowed never again to allow atrocities like those of that conflict happen again. World leaders decided to complement the UN Charter with a road map to guarantee the rights of every individual everywhere. The document they considered, and which would later become the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, was taken up at the first session of the General Assembly in 1946.
