very Monday through Friday on Channel 10.1, children in the Greater Milwaukee community enjoy fun, engaging, quality children’s programming because of the generous commitment of The Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation. Throughout her lifetime, Jane Bradley Pettit was committed to improving the lives of all children, from all socio-economic walks of life. Because of her legacy and support, Milwaukee PBS continues to offer outstanding educational and entertaining programming that both children and their parents look forward to watching. Long-time favorite Sesame Street, and other children’s literacy programs such as Martha Speaks, Super Why, Curious George, Sid the Science Kid, and others engage and stimulate children’s visual imagination and mental development. These acclaimed PBS Kids shows are created specifically to help bridge the literacy gap, including fostering reading skills, language development, and math skills. PBS Kids programs such as Arthur and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood also model important social skills for children, such as empathy, generosity, and courtesy. Kids learn about the environment and the underwater life beneath the oceans in Splash & Bubbles, are exposed to astronomy and earth science concepts in Ready Jet Go!, and learn scientific concepts about animals from real-life zoologists Chris and Martin Kratt in Wild Kratts. As jobs in our society require more advanced knowledge, PBS’s children’s literacy programming provides an important educational supportive link to children and their families. According to JoAnn Culp Youngman, Vice President, the Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation, “Jane Bradley Pettit knew the importance of reaching out to children, not only to expand their knowledge, but to foster their hopes and dreams in life. The love of reading enriches the lives of children. Milwaukee PBS programming provides an opportunity to increase children’s literacy by stimulating their imagination through education and entertainment. The Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation is pleased to continue the legacy that Mrs. Pettit began over 20 years ago.” The Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation’s generous gift is one of the primary sources of funding for our award-winning educational children’s programming on Milwaukee PBS. Milwaukee PBS is proud of this collaboration with the Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation because we share similar goals – to strengthen local communities by supporting the positive development of all children. Jane Bradley Pettit’s legacy of commitment to children’s educational development continues to live on in her commitment to Milwaukee PBS children’s literacy programming.

Letter from
Bohdan Zachary
I
n recent weeks, I’ve had the pleasure to meet many of you in person at any number of the terrific summer events throughout the city. The idea of what might happen to Milwaukee PBS if the Corporation for Public Broadcasting is defunded is the first thing I have been asked about when I’m out in public. Over and over I hear not only your passion for what we do but your concern for our future. I appreciate that our messages about this critical issue resonate with you and that you have shown your support by signing up at protectmypublicmedia.org. Your trust in our mission is evident. The threat to our future is very real and we’ll keep you up to date through emails and on air promotions. I’d like to preview two important television specials airing this month on August 10th and August 23rd. The first special comes from Milwaukee PBS’ award-winning producers Everett Marshburn and Maryann Lazarski, Beyond Sherman Park: A 10thirtysix Special is Milwaukee PBS’ newest collaboration with WUWM 89.7 Milwaukee Public Radio. On the verge of the one year anniversary of unrest in Milwaukee’s Sherman Park neighborhood, the hour-long special takes an in-depth look at what many say are the underlying issues that provoked frustration and violence in August of 2016. Hosts Portia Young (Milwaukee PBS’ 10thirtysix) and LaToya Dennis (WUWM Milwaukee Public Radio) look at what’s working and what still needs work in terms of housing, unemployment, education, community pride and police relations – and the impact all of this has on neighborhoods and residents beyond Sherman Park. The special was taped before a live audience of community activists, concerned neighbors and City leaders at Parklawn Assembly of God Church in Sherman Park.
The second program of note is from Black Nouveau producers Everett Marshburn and Liddie Collins. Crossing The Bridge examines Milwaukee’s civil rights struggle for Open Housing. In 1962, Common Council member Vel Phillips introduced legislation outlawing housing discrimination. Five years later, the NAACP Youth Council and Commandos, led by Father James Groppi, marched across

the 16th St. Viaduct in support of open housing. The 200 marchers were met by an angry mob of about 2,000 white working class Milwaukeeans. The event and the Youth Council’s subsequent 200 nights of marches caused Milwaukee to become known as “The Selma of the North.” The national and international media attention it created helped spark passage of the Fair Housing Act passed by Congress in April of 1968. Fifty years later, what has changed? Black Nouveau recounts the history, talks with some of the marchers, looks at whether Open Housing is available in Milwaukee today; and where the new generation of civil rights leaders concentrating their energies. These specials exemplify Milwaukee PBS’ commitment to telling stories of the communities it serves. It’s your ongoing financial support that allows us to produce the kinds of programs you will only find on public television. As always, we welcome your comments. Thank you.

Premieres August 10th, 8 p.m. on Channel 10 10thirtysix on Milwaukee PBS partners with WUWM public radio to provide an in-depth look at what many believe are the underlying issues that provoked frustration and violence in Milwaukee's Sherman Park neighborhood in last August. In this one-hour 10thirtysix special, “Beyond Sherman Park,” Hosts Portia Young and WUWM's LaToya Dennis look at what's working and what still needs work in terms of housing, unemployment, education, community pride and police relations – and the impact all of this has on neighborhoods and residents beyond Sherman Park. Last August, Milwaukee PBS and WUWM produced a half hour of in-depth discussion following the violence in Sherman Park. In “Beyond Sherman Park,” we bring back some of those local journalists and community activists to reflect on the past year and how many Milwaukee neighborhoods and their residents can move forward in a positive direction. Milwaukee PBS producers take a closer look at programs working in Sherman Park and beyond, including a housing rehab effort and a youth movement that are making a huge difference in the community. 4
Milwaukee journalist James Causey talks with several local and state leaders, including Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn, about what it’s going to take to solve problems and improve conditions for many Milwaukee residents and their families. We will also hear from the people who live in our Milwaukee neighborhoods. What are their concerns? What are their solutions? Who’s really listening to them? “Beyond Sherman Park” was recorded during a community event at Parklawn Assembly of God Church in Sherman Park allowing audience interaction with local journalists and community and city leaders. This production reflects Milwaukee PBS’ vision of producing quality programs to “enhance the quality of life in our community by encouraging people to consider issues and explore ideas.” “Beyond Sherman Park” airs on August 10 at 8 p.m. WUWM public radio will simulcast this program on 89.7 FM radio.

The Second Season of British Crime Series THE TUNNEL
T
he multi-award winning British crime drama THE TUNNEL will return for a second season, titled THE TUNNEL: SABOTAGE. Beginning Sunday, August 20, on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10 . The pragmatic, meticulous and newly promoted Commander Elise Wasserman, played by Clémence Poésy (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II”), and laconic but brilliant DCI Karl Roebuck, played by the International Emmy Award-winning Stephen Dillane (“Game of Thrones”), return for the second season of Ben Richards’ series. In THE TUNNEL: SABOTAGE, the investigative pair reunites to examine the case of a French couple abducted from the Eurotunnel, leaving behind their traumatized small daughter, Chloe Fournier. The case becomes complicated when a plane carrying British and

French passengers crashes into the Channel killing everyone on board. Suddenly the duo is faced with far bigger questions, and people are waiting for answers. As Wasserman and Roebuck pick their way through the clues thrown up by a vast field of debris, forging connections as they go, they are confronted with sinister and complicated forces at play. In a terrifying game of brinksmanship, they risk everything in the pursuit of true justice. “Season One of THE TUNNEL found a dedicated hyper loyal fan base on PBS stations with its thrilling storyline and stellar cast,” said Beth Hoppe, Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming, PBS. “We are extremely excited to be bringing back this crime drama for a second season this summer, with even more enthralling plot lines and twists.”
On the Local Scene As summer winds down Milwaukee PBS’ local programs focus on important community issues as well as the brightest highlights from past seasons. 10thirtysix takes an in-depth look at what many say are the underlying issues that provoked frustration and violence last August in the Sherman Park neighborhood. 10thirtysix’s Portia Young. See page 4 for details. Around the Corner with John McGivern visits Washington Heights, Plymouth, Monroe and Menomonee Falls. These communities all have unique places you’ll want to check out. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled as John and the crew travel around Wisconsin this summer to film season 7. They may be coming to your area. The Arts Page features the Kohler Arts Center in its first retrospective exhibit: two local Milwaukee artists as they create multidimensional paintings that explore shape and sound. We also look at a unique collaboration between the Milwaukee Ballet Company and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin which helped make physical therapy more artistic, fun, and enriching for 13 special young dancers.

THE FARTHEST – VOYAGER IN SPACE
THE FARTHEST – VOYAGER IN SPACE Will Premiere August 23 on PBS In Celebration of 40th Anniversary of the Voyager Launch
THE FARTHEST – VOYAGER IN SPACE, a two-hour
turned its camera inward and, at the insistence of the eloquent and insightful astronomer Carl Sagan, took one of the most famous images of Earth ever captured. As described by Sagan in the film, the image showed Earth as a pale blue dot on which “everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives …on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.”
With participation from more than 20 of the original and current mission scientists, engineers and team members, THE FARTHEST – VOYAGER IN SPACE tells captivating tales of one of humanity’s greatest achievements in exploration. From supermarket aluminum foil added at the last minute to protect the craft from radiation; to the near disasters at launch; to the emergency maneuvers to fix a crucial frozen instrument platform, viewers get a sense of how difficult— and rewarding—space exploration can be.
The spacecraft, equipped with a fraction of the computing power of a modern cell phone, sent back unprecedented images and data from all four outer planets and many of their moons. As they continue their journey into interstellar space, they carry with them a literal record of our existence that may outlive us all. Sagan was one of the masterminds behind perhaps Voyager’s most iconic feature, The Golden Record, which carries greetings, music and images from Earth to intelligent beings they may one day encounter. THE FARTHEST – VOYAGER IN SPACE reveals how this famous record was created and how it presents humanity to any creatures that may find it.
special about NASA’s historic Voyager mission to explore our solar system and beyond, will premiere nationally on August 23 at 8 p.m. on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10, in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the first Voyager launch. The documentary was an official selection in the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival as part of the festival’s Viewpoints program.
Featuring a soundtrack of evocative period music including songs from Pink Floyd, stunning cinematography, vivid CGI animations of Voyager traversing the solar system, and original groundbreaking photographs taken by the twin spacecraft, the film tells the story of one of humanity’s most ambitious scientific endeavors. Voyager revolutionized planetary science, resolved key questions about the outer planets and raised intriguing new ones about the evolution of our solar system. Originally approved to travel only to Saturn and Jupiter, the spacecraft used gravity-assisted slingshot trajectories to take advantage of a once-in-176-year planetary alignment to extend their missions, with Voyager 2 also extending its mission to visit Uranus and Neptune. After completing its mission to Jupiter and Saturn, Voyager 1 10
“We’re living in an exciting time for space exploration, with new Earth-like exoplanets being discovered, manned missions to Mars on the horizon, and the search for extraterrestrial life being taken ever more seriously,” says executive producer Sean B. Carroll of HHMI Tangled Bank Studios. “And even though it launched 40 years ago, Voyager laid the foundation for so much of what we know about the outer planets and beyond. It’s an incredible scientific achievement, but also inspires us to reflect on our place in the universe and to imagine the implications of finding life on other worlds.”

“Crossing the Bridge” examines Milwaukee’s civil rights struggle for Open Housing. In 1962, Common Council member Vel Phillips introduced legislation outlawing housing discrimination. Five years later, the NAACP Youth Council and Commandos, led by Father James Groppi, marched across the 16th St. Black Nouveau, recounts the history, talks with some of the marchers, looks at whether Open Housing is available in Milwaukee today; and where the new generation of civil rights leaders concentrating their energies.
