Welcome from Debbie Hamlett
A democratic society depends upon an informed and educated citizenry.
– Thomas Jefferson
Every day we strive to bring you the latest information and conversations to help you form your own opinions on important decisions. In preparation for the upcoming election, we’ve ramped up local conversations around the important topics of immigration, climate, education and democracy
Recently, you may have seen a series of segments on 10THIRTYSIX™ and ADELANTE - VOTE 2024 TABLE TALKS in partnership with Marquette University on the topics of immigration, climate, education and democracy. You’ll see more of these discussions showcased in at least one half-hour program this fall.
On the national scene, we’re excited and proud to announce a partnership with AMERICA AT THE CROSSROADS WITH JUDY WOODRUFF to produce a town hall meeting from Milwaukee in September to air nationally. In addition, we’ll be working with the PBS NEWSHOUR team to produce a discussion with delegates. The PBS NEWSHOUR will report from the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee the week of July 15th.
This year will mark the 44th year for the annual A CAPITOL FOURTH, America’s National Independence Day celebration. You’ll experience an inspirational, patriotic program with a fantastic display of fireworks!
Soon you’ll receive a member survey by email if we have your address on file. If not, we’ll send a hard copy by mail. We’re sending surveys to various groups to gauge the interests, needs and opinions from those we serve. Your thoughts are essential as we explore new programs and services.
I’m starting my second year at Milwaukee PBS, and I have to say – I really love Wisconsin, and this station! I’m grateful to have met so many supporters and friends. I feel very fortunate to be living in a beautiful area with unique experiences, doing this meaningful and rewarding work.
You and your neighbors made a choice to invest in keeping this essential service strong. Thank you. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed individuals can make a difference. You do!
with appreciation,
Debbie Hamlett Vice President and General Manager

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: Nancy Becher & Miloudi Elafess
The World is the Backyard for these Milwaukee PBS Donors
It would not be an exaggeration to say Milwaukee is basecamp for our members in this month’s profile. In fact, few members have embraced a Milwaukee PBS lifestyle like Nancy Becher and Miloudi Elafess.
Together for 44 years this married couple has visited all seven continents and all seven modern Wonders of the World. They consume Milwaukee PBS content vigorously and are among our most loyal “frequent flyers” having participated in our numerous curated domestic travel programs that are in full swing right now departing from and returning to Milwaukee. What drew them to Milwaukee PBS to begin with was an opportunity to advance quality media not just for themselves, but for their neighbors as well. “We wanted to ensure that our favorite programs and other entertaining, educational, and family-oriented programs remain available to everyone,” said Nancy. It’s not only the family-oriented programming they value, but the proposition that southeast Wisconsin is a better place because of a media organization like Milwaukee PBS.

“We value the topics of social benefit that are otherwise not provided by commercial broadcasters,” she said. “Milwaukee PBS educates, informs, entertains, and inspires the imaginations of adults and children alike. It enriches the quality of life for us and our communities by motivating us all to consider issues and explore ideas.” So, what has been their favorite Milwaukee PBS Trip? Nancy loves Elvis and loved the Graceland trip and for Micoud it was the Wright Brothers Tour.
The world is the backyard for these two vagabonds and when they’re not out exploring, Milwaukee PBS brings it to them. “Channels 10 and 36 are free and without commercials, the programs are excellent covering every subject imaginable, and they need our support,” said Nancy.

Get Ready for Bedtime With These Tips From Donkey Hodie
“Kids in preschool need ten to thirteen hours of sleep. That’s because their brain is growing so much,” said Carol Ripple, Ph.D. “Kids have a much harder time really reaching their potential if they are not getting the sleep that they need.”
DONKEY HODIE and her friends take turns sharing how they wind down to get ready for bed. Here are five tips to help kids wind down and prepare for sleep!
1
Set up a cozy sleep space. Make the sleeping area a good place to rest. Include special sleep-only items, like a stuffed animal or special blanket. In the Donkey Hodie Bedtime Stories, a new series of shorts, Purple Panda has his purple pillow, fuzzy blanket, and snuggly toy when he sleeps. To feel extra comfortable, Ripple suggests a cooler temperature is better for sleep. Aim for between 60 to 68 degrees.
2
Keep the room dark and quiet. The sleep space should be dark to signal the body that it is time for sleep. (This means no tablets or screens right before bed!) A fan or white noise machine can be soothing to quiet outside noises. Dim night lights are okay, said Ripple,
especially if that helps give the child a sense of safety and security.
3
Encourage calm bodies. During the day, make sure your kids have plenty of chances to use their energy, run, play, and explore. Figure out what helps your child reset and get ready for sleep each night. Donkey Hodie and Duck Duck do some stretches to relax. Bob Dog takes a few deep calming breaths before bedtime.
4
Give comfort and connection. Before settling down to sleep, children need to feel safe and secure. Connecting with your child at bedtime helps them relax and lessens fear or anxiety before bed. Reading a story together, singing or talking about the day are ways to connect.
5
Make it a routine.
Routines and consistency can be hard at the beginning but over time will help your kids know what to expect. Figure out a routine that works for you and your family. With time and consistency, these will become a habit.
